IOCOVOZZI Dear Herkimer County Resident: This year you can choose a different direction for the office of the Herkimer County District Attorney. I am running for this office which is now vacant. I PROPOSE THE FOLLOWING IF I AM ELECTED:
Ann improvedd forfeituree program: K
Many counties aggressively pursue the “fruits” of drug crimes and other felonies. When criminals commit crimes the government can seize their cash and property. New equipment can be purchased, for example, at no cost to the taxpayer. The Oneida County DA collects between $100,000 and $200,000 per year. Over $1 million in ten years in forfeitures. Herkimer County sentencing records show less than $2500 in drug money this year. We can do better.
Moree grantt applications:: K
Herkimer County is near the bottom of the list for counties our size in grant awards from NYS for prosecution support. We can improve our grant initiatives to obtain funds for staffing, training and equipment for the DA’s office.
Establishingg a websitee too keepp youu informed: K
The Herkimer County DA’s Office does not have a website. A website is inexpensive to set up and keep current. We will have a website.
Betterr coordinationn withh laww enforcement:: K
We need to work together in prosecuting drug crimes, child abuse, domestic violence or any other type of crime.
Noo Delays: K
I promise that cases will move expeditiously for the benefit of victims and their families. I will devote myself 100 percent to the job to protect everyone, including our most vulnerable.
Noo Otherr Jobb Orr Salary: K
I promise to commit all my energies to this demanding position. I will not work at any other full-time position or collect any other salary. There simply is no time for any distractions.
999%:: K
The DA’s office offered pleas or dismissed 99% of all felony cases in County Court from January to August of this year. Only one jury trial went to verdict during this time. Plea bargains are not always bargains for crime victims or their families. Dispositions must be fair to everyone involved.
MY EXPERIENCE AND BACKGROUND I am a seasoned trial attorney with 30 years experience in Federal, Supreme, County, Family, Surrogates and local courts. I have prosecuted juveniles for ten years and have defended clients. I have practiced civil law. My last four appeals have resulted in favorable outcomes for my clients. Volunteering to the community is important to me. I have volunteered for the American Cancer Society, Catholic Charities, American Red Cross and Herkimer Elks scholarship efforts.
Vote Mary Iocovozzi on Election day, November 6, 2012. I am m onn thee Democraticc andd Workingg Familiess lines. Mary is pleased to be endorsed by the Communication Workers of America, Local 1126 and the Teamsters Union Local 182. Paid for by the Committee to Elect Mary Iocovozzi District Attorney

HAVE YOU EVER wanted to build a scale model of a certain vehicle, and found the very one you sought. Then found that the kit you purchased does not have the particular wheels (or tires, or engine, or seats...) which you want to add tho your model? Sometime you may find a model kit that includes the piece or pieces you seek... but, why spend money for a second model, from which you intend to use only a few pieces? UPTOWN AUTOMOTIVE has a selection of individual parts and pieces, so you don’t have to buy that second kit for your project. UPTOWN AUTOMOTIVE, 2007 Genesee St., Utica, NY 13501. 315-527-1637, M-F (except Thursday) 12 noon - 6pm. Sat 10am - 2pm.

Hello Again October 24, 2012 To say the least, life can be interesting. If you don’t believe me, find an old newspaper and read what was important or newsworthy at that time. As an example, a headline in the July 1, 1973 issue of the Williamsport, Pennsylvania Grit read, “Watergate damages credibility of Nixon,” continuing with, “Clearly the Washington scandal is approaching some sort of climax. Washington observers say it is very unlikely that President Nixon will resign, nor do they believe he will be impeached.” Another front-page headline, “U.S. facing economic slowdown?” Also news on the front page, “Wind viewed as important power source.” Under the news forecast heading on page 7, “A boost in airfares is likely later this year. Airlines are mumbling about the increased cost of fuel, labor, and security.” Further in the same column, “The Senate Republican leader, Hugh Scott of Pennsylvania will soon introduce a comprehensive health bill stating health costs as ‘the highest priority’ of Congress.” Found on page 8 with picture, “The Soviet Communist Party chairman Leonard Brezhnev whispers in the ear of President Nixon.” They both were smiling. Found on page 11, Dr. Roger O. Egebert, special assistant to the president for health policy, discussed two potential plans. “The Kennedy Plan,” he said, “would become just another federally operated program.” We are chatting about July 1, 1973 and today. So I ask, what’s new? 1. Questionable news about the President. 2. Economic problems 3. Raising cost of fuel problems 4. Health program – proposal and problems 5. Proposed national health plan – just another federally operated program. 6. In-the-ear-only conversation between a Russian leader and the President of the United States. This news was the topic of the day 35 years ago. Has anything other than names really
changed? More to the point, are we facing any problems in 2012 that are unlike the problems of 1973? Everything seems to be the same except in 2012, we are paying for all of the previous mistakes. How much will it cost us in the future if the federal government is granted more control? Can anyone actually believe big government will cost less? It never has. Here in New York State, we have the largest state government and the highest taxes. More than 150 years ago, a French person named Alexis de Tocqueville said, “The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public’s money.” Question to ponder: How many billions of dollars of the public money does Congress dish back out of our pockets which will eventually destroy or collapse our fiscal policy?” “Democracy extends the sphere of individual freedom; socialism restricts it.” The larger our federal government grows, the more socialistic it will become, until it smothers our American way of life. As a nation we are, or are we not, the wonder of wonders? Who could think the way we think and yet come out so often smelling as a bunch of fresh-cut roses? While having breakfast at a local diner, the question was asked, “What did you think of the Vice Presidential debate?” The question was answered by a question, “Oh, did they have the debates? Who won?” After a single minute of grunts and groans, conversation turned to baseball. I couldn’t believe they could recall every inning, who was the starting pitcher as well as detailed knowledge of his record, accompanied with names and date of nearly every player on both teams. How could they recall so much and with such enthusiasm? I started wondering if our colleges are trying to educate the wrong students. Is it possible I.Q. and SAT levels should be set aside and good old interviews covering sports, hobbies, and life experiences should be used to determine who has the real college-level ability to learn?
Like all Irish families, we seem to enjoy stories about family members. When I was a boy, we had a cousin by the name of William John. He arrived in this country from Ireland and purchased a small dairy farm near Milford – you know, just a few miles below Cooperstown. William John’s sister Frances lived with him. One morning he was later than usual getting out of bed to take care of the dairy. His sister, in a very irritated tone yelled, “There you go again William John. You came home half drunk last night – what do you have to say for yourself?” “It’s not my fault,” he replied. “I ran out of money.” Friday, October 19, 2012 should be a marked day. On October 19, 1780, two hundred and thirty two years ago, a bloody battle took place here in the Mohawk Valley: the battle of Klock’s Field. The Fort Klock original building is still standing as a monument to the early American patriots. This historical building is located near St. Johnsville. Our hats are off to Richardson Brands Company of Canajoharie – drive by and note both the new Richardson signs and the new exterior color. Richardson, you are a great asset to our valley. Richardson Brands include Gravy Master, Dryden & Palmer products, Beechies, and Bogdons. An appliance repairman knocked at the kitchen door, “Come on in,” said a voice inside. He found only a dog and a parrot. He started to lecture the parrot about inviting in an unknown guest. With that, the parrot said to the dog, “Fido – sic him.” A few years ago an unknown man stopped at our office and placed several full-page ads. Without any history of the man, we demanded payment. He asked, “Has anyone ever questioned my honesty?” “Well, no,” was the reply, “but its never been mentioned either.” Yesterday I saw a rather large flock or gaggle of geese traveling northwest over the Mohawk River. We certainly have the best opportunities to enjoy nature at its best. Remember to thank the advertisers in this paper. Without them, this paper could not exist. I’m sure they will thank you for without your support, they could not exist. God be with you until we meet again. Fred Lee and the Lee Family

starting. Battery tips To help you get the most life out of a battery, the Car Care Council suggests the following: • Have your battery tested - and replaced if necessary - in the fall and spring. This reduces the chance a dead battery will leave you stranded on the side of the road. • Be sure the electrical system is charging at the correct rate; overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as undercharging. • If your battery is the type that needs to be topped off, check it regularly, especially in hot weather. Add distilled water when necessary. • Always replace a battery with one that’s rated at least as high as the one originally specified. • Keep the top of the battery clean. Dirt becomes a conductor,

(NAPSA) — Sooner or later, all car batteries have to be replaced. The good news is that by taking a few simple maintenance steps, you can avoid the cost and hassle of getting stranded with a dead battery. Extreme heat and cold Excessive heat and overcharging are the two main reasons for shortened battery life. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, thus damaging the internal structure of the battery. A malfunctioning component in the charging system, usually the voltage regulator, can allow too high of a charging rate, leading to slow death for a battery. Colder temperatures can also be a problem, increasing the thickness of the engine oil, making the engine harder to turn over and the battery work harder. This makes for harder

Mulching and other November gardening tips
by Charlie Nardozzi, Horticulturist and Leonard Perry, UVM Extension Horticulturist Mulching, protecting young trees, and wrapping evergreens are some of the gardening tips for this month. There’s a window of opportunity for mulching because you want to wait until the ground freezes so you don’t give rodents a hiding place too soon, but if you don’t mulch before the snow accumulates, it won’t get done. If we could rely on constant snow cover, winter mulching would be less necessary, but in the absence of that reliability, we need to provide a winter blanket. This is mainly done for young and unestablished, weak, or less hardy perennials. If a plant is rated for a zone warmer than the one shown for your site, you might consider mulching. An example is crocosmia — a tender summer bulb producing spikes of red (usually) flowers in early summer. Although usually listed as hardy to zone 6, these can be grown even in a cold zone 3 with plenty of mulch or snow cover. You can find your hardiness zones online
from the USDA (www.usna.usda.gov/Har dzone/index.html). Some plants are better off without any mulch, especially in winter, when it can compact and encourage rotting of the crowns. These include coral bells, delphiniums, oriental poppies, iris, violas, and sedums. To prevent sunscald and frost cracking on young, thin-barked trees, such as maples, wrap the trunks with tree wrap or use white plastic protectors. These materials will reflect the warming rays of the sun so the tree bark doesn’t heat up on winter days, only to be suddenly cooled when the sun sets and the temperatures plummet. Protect young evergreens from winter sun and wind. Set four stakes around a plant close to the branches, then wrap burlap around the outside of the stakes and over the top, and secure it with twist ties poked through the burlap. Make sure evergreens have a good deep watering before the ground freezes because they continue to respire, albeit slowly, during the winter. The most important
help you can provide for your hand tools this fall is to wipe them clean after use and before storing them for winter. Any moist soil left on the blades can encourage rust, and dirt can dull pruner blades. Also wipe wooden handles with linseed oil to keep them from splitting due to dryness. Winterize other gardening equipment by draining water from hoses, storing nozzles inside (so frozen water doesn’t crack them), and adding preser-
ger the birds. Make sure to check the water every few days to make sure it hasn’t evaporated, or to clean and replace it. Also make sure these heated units are plugged into a properly grounded and approved outdoor receptacle. Watch for sales on bird seed this month, and stock up for winter now.

vative (from rental and hardware stores) to gas for mowers and other power equipment. Leftover bags of fertilizers and soil amendments will not only tempt mice over the winter, they also can collect moisture and turn lumpy, and paper bags can start disintegrating. Pick up some inexpensive large, sturdy plastic containers with lids to store the bags in; they can also make it easier to dispense the material next time you need it.
If you keep birds around by feeding them, you should also provide water for them. The only realistic way to do that in winter is to use an electric birdbath heater that plugs into an outdoor outlet. Or, you might buy a birdbath with heater built into it already. They keep the water just above freezing and don’t endan-
