The group, under the direction of Jan Szuba, Assistant Director of Activities at VHS and recent recipient of the 2012 LeadingAge Employee of Distinction Award in our region, features residents of VHS who enjoy spending time practicing and hitting the road to share their love of music with others. Following their performance, the Historical Society reciprocated by offering the Valley Bells a social hour featuring a wide variety of refreshments and a chance to visit with their appreciative audience. The Valley Bells have a general repertoire for all occasions including popular melodies, standard tunes, patriotic songs and old favorites. The New York State Thruway Authority and New York State Troop T are reminding motorists of the danger of deer season with their annual “Antler Alert.” Most deer-vehicle collisions occur from October through December according to the Thruway Authority and the State Police Troop T. “Fall is here and deer are highly active and on the move, so wear your seatbelts, slow down and

drive cautiously,” said Thruway Authority Executive Director Thomas J. Madison. “Scan the roadway, keep an eye on the shoulders and remain attentive for deer on or approaching the highway. Deer are unpredictable, and by obeying the speed limit and avoiding distractions, motorists can greatly reduce the chances of a vehicle-deer accident.” “The safety of every motorist is our top priority,” said State Police Troop Sgt. Thomas Ferritto. “Be aware of your surroundings on the highway. Take the extra step by keeping free of distractions. Vehicle-deer accidents can cause serious injury, so it is essential that drivers be on the look-out for deer.” Although the Thruway Authority maintains an excellent safety record and uses deer crossing signs at locations with a higher-than- average history of vehicle-deer collisions, more than 2,200 of these incidents occurred along the Thruway in 2011.

The Thruway Authority offers these tips for motorists: • Deer are more active during evening, dusk and dawn. • Scan shoulders of the roadside for deer eyes reflecting light. • Using high beams and sounding horn may help to repel deer, but won’t necessarily prevent a collision. • Slow down when approaching deer standing at the roadside, as they may run into oncoming traffic. • Always wear your seatbelt. • Deer often move in groups. Where there’s one, there may be more. • If you see a deer, brake firmly. The most serious vehicle-deer accidents occur when drivers veer at high speeds, and strike another vehicle or go off the road. • Never swerve to avoid hitting a deer. This can confuse deer and possibly cause them to go into the roadway. • If you are involved in a vehicle-deer collision, do not attempt to ap-

proach or touch the deer. If a vehicle-deer accident occurs, motorists should make every attempt to drive their vehicle as far off the highway as possible, park on the right shoulder, activate their four-way hazard flashers, and stay in the vehicle and wait until help arrives. Motorists traveling on the Thruway can report an accident by calling 911 or the Thruway Authority’s emergency number at 800-842-2233. Additional traveler safety tips are available on the Thruway Authority website at www.thruway.ny.gov/tra velers/safety/drivingsafety.html . To receive TRANSalerts, emails that provide real-time information on Thruway traffic conditions, go to: www.thruway.ny.gov/tas /index.shtml . To see the map of webcam views of the Thruway, go to: www.thruway.ny.gov/tra verls/map/inex.html?lay er=cameras .

namentals and fruits) Prevent rabbit and rodent feeding damage by erecting physical barriers, such as metal mesh (one-fourth inch) hardware cloth. Pull mulch a few inches away from the trunk, as the mulch provides a warm winter home for rodents. Chemical repellents also are available, but their effectiveness is temporary and not foolproof. Prevent frost cracking (or sunscald) by wrapping trunks with commercial tree wrap or painting the south- and southwestfacing sides of the trunk with white latex outdoor paint. Young, thin-barked trees such as maples and many fruit trees are especially susceptible. Be sure to remove the tree wrap by early spring to prevent overheating of the bark.

Remove dead, diseased or damaged branches. Protect the graft union on rose bushes by mounding soil around the plants and adding mulch on top. Wait until several killing frosts have occurred so plants will be dormant when covered. Plants covered too early may be smothered. If you are planning to order a “live” Christmas tree, prepare its planting hole before the soil freezes. Mulch the area heavily to prevent freezing, or dig the hole and put fill in a protected, nonfreezing area such as a garage or basement. Clean up and discard fallen leaves and fruits around fruit plants to reduce disease carryover. Continue mowing lawn as needed. As tree leaves fall, run them through your mower (remove bag-

ger), allowing the shredded leaves to remain on the lawn. Be sure to mow only when grass and leaves are dry. An early November application of fertilizer can help keep lawns green into winter and boost early spring recovery. Apply one-half to 1 pound actual nitrogen, per 1,000 square feet of lawn, in quick-release, water-soluble form. Timing should aim for near or after the last mowing of the year but while lawn is still green. Garden (Flowers, vegetables and small fruits) If frost hasn’t taken your garden yet, continue harvesting. Harvest mature green tomatoes before frost, and ripen indoors in the dark. Store at 55-70°F. ture, the faster they ripen. Harvest root crops and store in a cold (32°F), humid location. Use perforated plastic bags as an easy way to increase humidity. Remove crop and weed plant debris from the garden and add to the compost pile. This will help reduce the carryover of diseases, insects and weeds to next year’s garden. Fall tilling, except in erosion-prone areas, helps improve soil struc-

ture and usually leads to soils warming and drying faster in the spring. This allows crops to be planted earlier. Apply mulch to strawberries to prevent winter injury or death to their crowns. Wait until temperatures have hit 20°F to be sure plants are dormant. If mulch is applied too soon the plant’s crown can rot. Dig and store tender flowering bulbs, and keep in a protected location. Complete planting of spring-flowering bulbs.

Hello Again October 27, 2012

Well — if you feel the way I do — you must be ready to buy a new TV, mine has the same stuff on it everyday. My friend recommends a Japanese model but I don’t speak Japanese. I walked the dog early this morning hoping I would see or hear a large gaggle of geese, not a single goose. Is it too early in the season for their southern fly? Several extra large Longhorn and Ron Allen trucks passed by. It’s amazing how many of those giant beauties they have and every one shines like brand new. How fortunate this area is to have these two trucking businesses. They must employee 40-50 truck drivers plus mechanics and office help. Can you imagine what their weekly fuel bill must come to? Just think, they must have over 800 tires on the ground every trip.

men were standing smoking, some with their hands in their pockets talking — no one was working. That was in the morning. In the afternoon the same type of big yellow trucks were parked along the road facing away from the tollbooths. You guessed it — probably the same men were standing between the trucks — some smoking — all talking — non-working. And the Authority thinks it can solve its financial problems by bleeding the trucking industry. I suggest that some time in between coffee breaks and gab fests they institute a new program called “work break” it would be something new and it might work. The famous humorist, Will Rogers said, “I don’t make jokes — I just watch the government and report the facts”.

While I do not think of myself as a humorist, I do see myself as a man, I feel a man should not cry, so while observing our government from the President, Congress, and Political parties on down I feel as though The trucking business is so very important to our I could swear, but as a Christian I should not do that area and all of New York State and the Thruway either. So I take my frustration out on you. I wonder, is Authority is planning on sticking a knife into the heart the pen mightier then the sword? of that great business by raising the toll on the Thruway for trucks by over 40 percent. I don’t believe Until next Hello Again — Keep your faith in God and the Thruway Authority needs the raise as much as it this country. Soon we will be given the opportunity to needs new management. put our feelings into action. It will be election day and by voting we have the opportunity to prove we care. You think you got problems? How about this? Have a wonderful week. I read, “I have a son in college, and when he’s home there’s no food in the refrigerator and I can’t get food for the refrigerator because there’s no gas in the car. And, I can’t put gas in the car because there’s no Sincerely, money in the sugar bowl, and I can’t put money in the sugar bowl because I have a son in college. Fred Lee and the Lee Family Yesterday as we drove off the Thruway exit near Rotterdam, two large yellow Thruway trucks were parked along the road facing the tollbooths. A group of

species has a permanent colony and that is the honey bee. Honey bee colonies exist as a unit over the winter months. All other social bees and wasps have colonies that do not survive the winter. These are known as annual colonies. Insects in this category are bumble bees, yellow jackets, bald-faced hornets and paper wasps.

Each colony is started by a queen that had survived the winter hiding in some secluded site, such as under leaves in the woods or hay bales in a barn. That queen then selects a nest site, deposits a few eggs and raises the first workers. These workers then take over the jobs of collecting food and feeding the babies. During spring and sum-

Tips for snowmobile operation in New York Please remember to wear your snowmobile helmet, stay on the trail, don’t drink and drive, and have a good time. Trails open after big game season ends in each zone, and the ground is snow covered. Privately owned land may have further restrictions, check with the local club, or posted signs, for more information. Any snowmobile operated in New York State must be registered with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), even if it is registered in another state or province, except under certain special circumstances. For more information about snowmobile registration, please contact the DMV. A portion of each registration goes to the Snowmobile Trail Development and Maintenance Fund. This fund supports over

10,000 miles of public snowmobile trails in New York State, snowmobile safety education programs and enforcement of NYS snowmobile laws. Snowmobilers must carry registration and proof of insurance documents on their person, not the snowmobile, at all times while snowmobiling. These documents must be produced at the request of any law enforcement officer or magistrate. Insurance documentation must be produced at the request of

anyone who is injured or suffers property damage as a result of operation of a snowmobile. Holders of snowmobile safety certificates must carry the certificate when they are snowmobiling. For more information about snowmobile requirements and snowmobile safety, please call the Office of Parks, Recreation & Historical Preservation at 518-474-0446. S o u r c e : www.dec.ny.gov

wasps in each colony, and human encounters increase dramatically. In general, social insects sting when defending their nest or when they are individually physically abused. So, in general, the best advice on how not to get stung is to leave the individuals alone — don’t swat at them when they hover around your cola can or picnic salad. And don’t disturb the colonies by doing something like running a lawn mower over the entrance to a nest in the lawn. Think “yellow jackets” here. The poet Robert Frost recognized the difference in behavior of bald-faced hornets — he called them white-tailed hornets — between individuals away from the nest and around the nest. In his poem, “The White-Tailed Hornet,” he describes encounters with the insect under two circumstances. At the nest, Frost describes the behavior this way: “The exit he comes out at like a bullet Is like the pupil of a pointed gun. And having the power to change his aim in flight, He comes out more unerring than a bullet.”

“Workin to be your one stop shop on the hill” Frost points out a different behavior away from the nest: “As a visitor to my house he is better. Hawking for flies about the kitchen door, In at one door perhaps and out another, Trust him not to put you in the wrong. He won’t misunderstand your freest movements. Let him light upon your skin unless you mind So many prickly grappling feet at once.” The stinging behavior of these insects is the reality behind the old saying that admonishes people to not “stir up a hornet’s nest.” Stirring up a hornet’s nest is a sure way to get stung. That is the reality peo-

ple faced years ago when mowing red clover hay or plowing up such fields in the fall. Red clover is pollinated by bumble bees, so fields of the crop were home to many nests. The bees were unhappy when their nests were disturbed and expressed their displeasure by attempting to sting anyone or anything in the vicinity. Many are the stories about teams of horses running away from the stinging bees. While I never had to plow a clover field with horses, I did plow such fields using a tractor without a cab. I can report from experience that stirring up a bumble-bee nest with a plow is a sure way to get stung, and stung and stung!

by Tom Turpin, Professor of Entomology, Purdue University Temperate regions of the world are characterized by distinct seasons throughout the year. Each season has good and bad points. Winter has beautiful snow-covered landscapes, freezing temperatures and ice on roadways. New leaves, flowers, thunderstorms and tornados are hallmarks of spring. Summer is a time for water sports and hot and sweaty days. Autumn is harvest time, falling leaves, and bees and wasps. Why is it that we always seem to be overrun with bees and wasps as the days decline during the fall season? The answer can be found in the biology of some of the social bees and wasps. Many of the insects that we call bees and wasps live a solitary life. As the name suggests these insects live and work alone. Familiar examples include mud dauber wasps, carpenter bees, cicada killer wasps and sweat bees. Other bees and wasps are social insects. Such insects live in colonies with a queen and a batch of workers. Of the social bees and wasps, only one

Donna’s day: creative family fun by Donna Erickson Put stamp on fall with real apple art Some of my kids’ best and least-expensive art supplies have come from nature. Acorns, leaves, shells, pinecones and sticks all have provided inspiration for a plethora of family craft and decorating projects. Now that apple season is here, it’s a perfect time to get your creative juices flowing and use real apples to stamp out some original art. You can stamp apple prints onto brown craft paper or recycled brown grocery bags for lovely homemade wrapping paper, gift tags and book covers. To create wearable art to celebrate fall, stamp apple prints with permanent acrylic fabric paints on a sweatshirt, T-shirt or cotton infant wear. Stamp fabric napkins, place mats, potholder and dish towels, too. There’s really no end to objects that can sport an apple stamp or two. Here’s the fun: Slice an apple in half vertically. Pat it dry with a towel and remove as much moisture as possi-

ble. For a handle that young kids can grab onto, poke a fork into the outside center of the apple. Pour craft paint in squeeze bottles onto a paper plate. (Use fabric paint if stamping clothing.) Dip the cut side of the apple into the paint. Press the apple gently on

prints as you like by dipping and printing. When your apple prints are dry, dip a toothpick or small paintbrush into some green or brown paint and paint a slender stem and a leaf onto your apple print. Or, glue a real stem on a print or two for an original look!

widthwise around the circumference, the seeds form a perfect star shape. Remove the seeds and stamp out the natural design. • If using fabric paints on fabric, an adult should heat-set the prints with an iron according to product instructions after

a paper towel to absorb some of the paint, and then press the apple firmly onto the paper or fabric. Stamp as many

der perennials. While in summer it is effective in retaining soil moisture, preventing erosion, and controlling weeds, in winter it acts as insulation for the soil and plant roots.

Failure to mulch landscape plants and evergreen shrubs in cold climates may lead to winter root injury. Alternate thawing and freezing of unmulched soil as temperatures warm during the day and drop at night may cause “frost heaving” in the spring. Freezing and thawing occurs mainly in the fall and spring, and in fall may keep perennials from hardening properly or cause injury to unhardened plants. Mulch retains soil heat and keeps it from escaping, which in turn protects root systems. Initially, the soil under mulch does not freeze as deeply, so plants will continue to absorb water. However, the soil will freeze eventually, so in the spring mulch doesn’t help much with desiccation (drying out) of foliage. Mulch helps evergreen shrubs go into winter with more moisture, so less damage will occur from drying out come spring. While snow cover can provide good protection for plants, it’s not possible to predict when, or how much, snow, will fall each year. So, your best bet is to spread pine needles, straw, chopped leaves, wood chips, shredded bark, or other organic materials around the base of your landscape plants. All are effective, although availability and cost may influence your decision as to what to use. For roses, which are usually grafted, make sure and cover the less hardy graft union (the swollen area at the base) with either compost or soil. Keep in mind that you should avoid pine needles if you don’t want acidic soil. Avoid “deals” on weedy hay, using weed-free straw instead. Fresh wood chips might take up nitrogen when decomposing, so it’s better if they are already composted, or use chopped or milled pine bark. The coarser the material, the longer it will last before needing to be reapplied. Regardless of the material you select, the rule of thumb for winter mulches is to apply a two or threeinch layer. Adding more not only wastes money but also may smother the root system, and possibly kill the plant, especially shallow-rooted perennials such as yarrow or bee balm. By adding only a couple inches of mulch in the fall, you can prevent soil temperatures from fluctuating wildly. So if air

temperatures drop to below freezing overnight, soil temperatures might remain at 40 degrees or above and roots will continue to grow. Pine bark and pine needles will pack down very little, so you probably won’t need to add any more as the winter progresses. If you use straw such as around strawberries, start with a four- to six-inch layer, as it will pack down to the desired final depth of two to three inches. You may need to add more throughout the winter to maintain that three-inch depth, especially if snow cover is sparse or nonexistent and the site is windy. After applying mulch around woody plants, gently pull it away from their stems or trunks. Mulching too close to the trunk may provide optimum conditions for the development of cankers on the lower trunk or stems. If this occurs, the damage cannot be reversed, and the plants die in a matter of seasons. A “volcano” mound of mulch around trunks also will provide a home for mice, which can chew the bark and “girdle” the stems, resulting in the plant’s death. Girdle means to remove a band of bark and living tissue from around a tree or plant. This usually kills the plant as it has no way without this conductive tissue to move nutrients and water between tops and roots. Mulch fall-transplanted trees and landscape plants as soon as you’ve planted them. That’s because the mulch is needed to keep the soil warmer and moister for as long as possible before the ground freezes to help the roots become established. For these plants, you might want to use mouse guards

around trunks to prevent injury. (Tree wrapping materials and plastic guards also protect against sunscald in winter. This is caused by the rapid warming and then freezing of bark on sunny winter days and cold nights.) For established landscape plants, although many gardening books recommend mulching when the soil cools or is slightly frozen, I prefer to mulch earlier in the fall. This helps retain soil warmth, so roots continue to grow for a longer period, and plants can absorb more moisture to head into winter in better shape against drying out. If temperatures drop really low overnight, such as to 10 degrees, soils might remain just below freezing or around it, so less-hardened roots will not suffer damage in the

fall as they otherwise might without mulch. A rule of thumb with strawberries, which works for many other perennials, is to mulch when there have been three consecutive days of soil temperatures below 40 degrees. These might occur in midNovember in northern New England, and late-November in southern New England. If temperatures remain low in the fall for a few days, soil temperatures will drop more slowly on mulched soils, so wild swings in temperature are less apt to occur. Then, in spring, you will need to remove the mulch from herbaceous perennials, or pull it away as soon as snow disappears and plants start to grow. For woody plants, you can leave it on for some weed control in summer.

by Samantha Mazzotta Lawn will thank you for raking leaves Q: I’m not thrilled with all the leaves piling up in my yard. Do you have any tips to make fall cleanup easier? Why can’t I just leave them where they lie? — Barbara in Dover, NH A: Raking leaves can be a tedious task, and gets exhausting when dealing with a large yard with lots of trees. During the fall season, a homeowner could wind up raking the yard at least once a week. Unfortunately, leaving those leaves to pile up will wreak havoc on your lawn. First, the coating of leaves prevents air and sun from reaching grass directly, but lets rainwater trickle down, creating a harsh environment for grass. Second, leaves are filled with alkaline compounds that can damage the grass. These factors make leaves a great mulch ingredient, because you typically put mulch where you don’t want grass or weeds to grow. You don’t want a heavy coating of leaf mulch on your lawn, though. So, you’ve got to clean

up those fallen leaves eventually. Here’s a few ideas to make the task somewhat easier. • Pick up the first light coating of leaves while mowing the lawn, with the bag attached. • Borrow or rent a leaf blower to tackle larger areas with a moderate to heavy coating of leaves. Carefully blow the leaves into rough piles around the lawn. • Use your rake to finish a large leaf cleanup job: pile the leaves closer together, or use the rake to shift leaves into a bag or wheelbarrow for disposal elsewhere. • Add leaves to your compost pile. Fall is a favorite time for homeowners who keep compost piles because leaves add bulk to their compost and can help balance nutrients and acidity or alkalinity if used in the right amounts. HOME TIP: Watch out for that noisy leaf blower. Be aware of any local noise ordinances before using a leaf blower and try to avoid using it before 10 a.m. most days. Your neighbors will thank you. Make change happen for your neighbors — Red Kettle volunteers needed The Salvation Army offers help and hope to those in need, all year long, but especially during the holiday season. The traditional Red Kettles at many stores are the main source of fund raising that supports the local Salvation Army all year long. “The army behind the Army is a dedicated group of community members that realize that in our slow economy, the need is even greater,” said Forrest Kimball, field representative for The Salvation Army covering Northern, Central, and Eastern New York. “Our kettle ringers are students, seniors, service club members, local church groups, families — anyone who wants to make a difference in the

lives of those in need in their community. Many families make an afternoon of bell ringing at the Red Kettle a holiday family tradition,” said Kimball. “It’s empowering to see through a community’s generosity, The Salvation Army is able to respond quickly to those in need. Every holiday season, I’m humbled by the fact that residents in our area are so eager to give people in need the chance to rebuild their lives,” he said. Individuals and groups interested in volunteering at a Red Kettle location in their area can contact Forrest Kimball at 315-877-6079 or email him at Forrest.Kimball@use.salvationarmy.org.

ers and growers alike. Plant breeders look at a range of characteristics when developing new varieties. In the case of apples, they are often looking for pest resistance, storage quality, appearance and taste. Bill Lord feels Wolf River was popular back in the day because it was naturally scab resistant, winter hardy, relatively early, it stored well, and was dry enough to soak up flavoring when cooked. My grandparents remembered it as a large apple which means more bang for your peeling buck. I’ve also heard it said it tasted like sawdust if you ate it raw, but I won’t tell you who said it because those sound like fighting words. With the better disease control methods, a wider range of disease resistant varieties available today and a greater consumer emphasis on eating apples, Wolf River has been outcompeted by other varieties. Northern Spy in its turn has become less popular because it doesn’t have the disease resistance of some of the other varieties on the market. It also doesn’t tend to start fruiting until later in life and then is very susceptible to biennial bearing, a condition where you have a good crop one year and a poor one the next year. This means, compared to more modern varieties, the Northern Spy leads to a lower economic return for the grower. As an Extension staff person, I can appreciate why it’s no

longer a top variety. As a person who remembers fondly the pies of my childhood I’m still happy to buy it when I find it. So if the varieties you remember aren’t available anymore, how do you choose a suitable replacement? Of course I’m biased, but I say, go to the source. Most of the orchards in Grafton County offer either farmstand or pick-your-own options for customers, and the people who run those establishments can rattle off a ton of information about the varieties they sell. They may even be able to tell you which modern variety is most like the old one you remember. Some of their comments will be objective, “Cortlands tend to be large, don’t brown quickly and absorb spices well so they are a good choice for baking” or “applesauce with at least three apple varieties has a more complex flavor.” Others will be less objective opinions “Gala is the best variety for apple crisp” or “Macoun is the best eating apple on the market.” So take what you hear with a grain of salt, and then write the name of the varieties you choose on the bag. Take them home and experiment with them. Decide for yourself which ones work best in pie, which ones make the best snacks, and whether or not a three variety applesauce really tastes any different to you than a one variety applesauce. And while you are at it, enjoy the taste of fall.

Dear Herkimer County Resident: This year you can choose a different direction for the office of the Herkimer County District Attorney. I am running for this office which is now vacant. I PROPOSE THE FOLLOWING IF I AM ELECTED:

Ann improvedd forfeituree program: K

Many counties aggressively pursue the “fruits” of drug crimes and other felonies. When criminals commit crimes the government can seize their cash and property. New equipment can be purchased, for example, at no cost to the taxpayer. The Oneida County DA collects between $100,000 and $200,000 per year. Over $1 million in ten years in forfeitures. Herkimer County sentencing records show less than $2500 in drug money this year. We can do better.

Moree grantt applications:: K

Herkimer County is near the bottom of the list for counties our size in grant awards from NYS for prosecution support. We can improve our grant initiatives to obtain funds for staffing, training and equipment for the DA’s office.

Establishingg a websitee too keepp youu informed: K

The Herkimer County DA’s Office does not have a website. A website is inexpensive to set up and keep current. We will have a website.

Betterr coordinationn withh laww enforcement:: K

We need to work together in prosecuting drug crimes, child abuse, domestic violence or any other type of crime.

Noo Delays: K

I promise that cases will move expeditiously for the benefit of victims and their families. I will devote myself 100 percent to the job to protect everyone, including our most vulnerable.

Noo Otherr Jobb Orr Salary: K

I promise to commit all my energies to this demanding position. I will not work at any other full-time position or collect any other salary. There simply is no time for any distractions.

999%:: K

The DA’s office offered pleas or dismissed 99% of all felony cases in County Court from January to August of this year. Only one jury trial went to verdict during this time. Plea bargains are not always bargains for crime victims or their families. Dispositions must be fair to everyone involved.

MY EXPERIENCE AND BACKGROUND I am a seasoned trial attorney with 30 years experience in Federal, Supreme, County, Family, Surrogates and local courts. I have prosecuted juveniles for ten years and have defended clients. I have practiced civil law. My last four appeals have resulted in favorable outcomes for my clients. Volunteering to the community is important to me. I have volunteered for the American Cancer Society, Catholic Charities, American Red Cross and Herkimer Elks scholarship efforts.

by Heather Bryant, Regional Field Specialist, Food and Agriculture When I was a kid, Northern Spy was my Mom’s favorite apple variety for pies, but today they are fairly hard to find and most people, including me, reach for Cortlands when baking pies. My grandparents used to wax poetic about Wolf River, their favorite variety in childhood. I’ve never seen one. This all begs the question, why do varieties come and go and why are there so many out there? A wide range of varieties exist for most crops because our growing conditions vary widely and growers benefit when they choose the ones that grow best on their farms. Different varieties ripen at different times meaning careful selection can allow a grower to extend their season. Markets also vary, and more varieties allow the grower to cater to a wider range of niches. New varieties are continually being developed to adapt to changing pest problems and consumer preferences, but often it’s only growers and serious gardening enthusiasts who are aware of it and can list off their favorites by name. Apples are a notable exception. In my experience, compared to carrots and onions, apple consumers are quite knowledgeable about what they like in an apple and why they like it and they can name the varieties with the preferred characteristics. Bill Lord, a UNH Cooperative Extension Fruit Specialist, Emeritus, feels that much of this stems from the fact that produce departments account for a great deal of business in grocery stores, and apples are a reliable seller. A University of Massachusetts study (www.umass.edu/fruitadvisor/fruitnotes/v72n1/a 1.pdf) showed apple consumers are willing to try new varieties and are willing to travel to find the varieties they are looking for. The researchers also said this trend started in the mid 80’s with the release of the Granny Smith. This consumer sophistication creates demand for new and different varieties, a wonderful situation for plant breed-

Chow Line: Behavior changes key in weight loss by Martha Filipic What are some of the things people do (besids eating less) to help them lose weight successfully? That’s an interesting question. Most people, for obvious reasons, focus on food when trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. But behavioral scientists studying successful weight loss have found a few strategies beyond cutting calories that seem to work for many who have lost weight and kept it off. In a recent study in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, researchers at the University of Minnesota studied behaviors of more than 400 people who successfully lost at least 10 percent of their body weight in the past year. The researchers grouped the behaviors in four major categories:

• Regularity of meals: People who tended to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner routinely were more likely to have better success at weight loss during the past year. They were also more likely to eat more fruits and vegetables. • TV-related viewing and eating: Participants were asked how often they ate snacks or meals in front of the television, how much TV they watched on an average day, and how often they ate after 7 p.m. Those who were more likely to engage in those behaviors tended to have a higher BMI (or body mass index, a standard measure of body fat based on height and weight) and higher fat and sugar intake. • Eating away from home: These behaviors include eating out at a restaurant (sit down or fast food); eating food provided by an employer or another employee at work; purchasing food at a convenience store or a gas station; and purchasing food items for a fundraiser. People who did these things more often had a higher fat and sugar intake and a lower fruit and vegetable intake, and engaged in less physical activity. • Intentional strategies for weight control: Participants were asked how often they wrote down the amount and type of exercise they engaged in, as well as the calorie content of the food they ate; how often they planned meals and exercise in order to manage their weight; and how often they used meal replacements. Those who did these things more often saw many benefits: they tended to have a lower BMI; they experienced greater weight loss in the last year; they

now be able to print a temporary proof of registration from their own computers rather than rushing to a DMV office in a panic because they realize that their registration is about to expire or has already expired.” Although most registrations are renewed through the mail, at an office or online in time to receive a new registration sticker before the old one expired, many times customers either forget about or wait too long before renewing their registrations. In that case, their only option in the past has been to visit a DMV office to register the vehicle. This new service provides customers with

a proof of registration that they can display while waiting for their new registration to arrive by mail. The temporary registration is available through the DMV Web site (www.dmv.ny.gov). It is available for most vehicle registration classes including boats, trailers and ATVs. There is no additional charge for the temporary document. After printing the temporary document, customers must display the temporary registration on the driver’s side of the vehicle’s dashboard in addition to the expiring registration sticker until their new sticker arrives. The temporary registration is

valid for 10 days from the date the renewal transaction is completed. After the temporary registration expires, the registrant can only operate the vehicle if it displays a valid registration sticker. For vehicles that do not have windshields and dashboards such as motorcycles and trailers, the motorist will be instructed to carry the temp when operating the vehicle. For additional information on online registration renewal and other online services, visit the DMV Web site at www.dmv.ny.gov/transact.htm.
