So you think all a cup or two of coffee can do for you is to give you a case of heartburn or keep you from a good night’s sleep? An article published May 17 in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that older adults who drink coffee may be less likely than non-drinkers to die from a number of causes. The 8-year-old study of over 403,000 men and women who drink coffee compared to those who drink little or none were less likely to die from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, diabetes, injuries, accidents, and infections. I, for one, can prove I haven’t died yet from too much or too little coffee but I am willing to testify that several times I became wide, bug-eyed awake at 2 in the morning with a sour stomach, wishing I had not had that last cup. Just think, if it wasn’t for coffee, Tums would go out of business, there wouldn’t be any late night T.V., and fewer with their bedroom reading lights on. Remember the old sailor’s warning: “Bright sky at night, sailors’ delight. Bright sky in the morning, sailors take warning.” It is obvious that on special occasions the good Lord includes us land-lubbers in his celestial messages. A few mornings ago the entire sky was painted in bright soft blue with streaks of color, not just in the east but everywhere. If an artist included that beautiful sky in his landscape painting, we would have doubts about its accuracy. There is only one who can paint the sky with such beauty. First thing in the morning I usually search the skies for a flock or gaggle of geese. I did not expect this morning to be any different but it was. The ground at 4:30 was covered with snow and it was too early for the geese.
The street out front was still a dirt road. Why continue to see deer. They too have to dig down not? Weren’t all village streets dirt? through the snow to find their food. Back in the warm house, I tried in my mind to organize a trip down memory lane, like the little chippy or squirrel dig up a treasure here or there. One of my favorite magazines is Yankee, a New England magazine. Yankee is now a very professional appearing, full color, gloss publication. I started reading Yankee before glossy paper or colored pictures or ads, while it is still worth the price and the time to read. Somehow with its new beauty, something seems to be missing from the earlier years. Maybe with its new format utilizing glossy paper stock and full-colored pictures, a reader no longer has to paint his own mental pictures relying on imagination, which was part of the fun in reading. Let’s travel together down memory lane for a few minutes. The first home I can remember was on a little twenty to thirty acre farm about two miles from the village. Dad drove a brown Model A Ford with black fenders. The road leading to our little farm was a common dirt path. Two or three times a year, the Middlefield town roadsmen would level out the worst of the ruts and rough spots with a large grader pulled behind a truck. Naturally the truck had a driver and the grader was operated by one man — his duty was to adjust the blades and rake to achieve the best results possible. They called it grading or honing the road. Every road in our area was dirt.
I don’t believe we ever thought it should be a macadam or paved road. Dad’s Model A Ford was a step up in human comfort. Some of our neighbors still drove into the village with a horse and buggy or in the winter with a sleigh. The Model A produced a sound all of its own and the manifold Winter has started in our beautiful upstate heater barely kept the cabin comfortable, so we country. The leaves are gone, hillsides are barren, covered with blankets and wore heavy warm wool even most of the oak trees have shed their clothes — including long johns. foliage having settled in for winter. A few times during the winter months we will see a little Our new home — that is new to us — was in chipmunk or a squirrel out digging through the the village. It provided a more comfortable way snow to recover one of their hidden pantries. of life. We had electricity and running water at How is it possible they can remember where their the kitchen sink. No modern bathroom or toilet, hidden treasures are buried? All winter we will yet.
Remember the famous movie, “On Golden Pond,” with Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn? That movie made the lonely sounding loon famous. A loon to us back in the hills was someone who was a patient at the looney bin down in Binghamton, or should have been. We had crows. What can you say about the lowly crow? But as they flew over our village, their caw seemed to resonate and fill the air with a pleasant, “this is home” sound. This morning I am reminded of the old country preacher who was accused of standing or leaning at the pulpit and rambling on until he finally thought of something to say. One Sunday, he said three times “in closing.” With that, a farmer said “That’s enough of those ‘in closings’ Parson. My wife’s dinner is burning up in the oven and I’ve got to let the cows out. Say ‘Amen.’” On the way to be with my wife in the hospital I stopped at a local diner or café for breakfast. A group of people from a local church were enjoying breakfast and reading from the Bible and I assume praying. It blessed me old Irish heart to see a group of U.S. citizens publicly worshipping God. God be with folks, and he will be with our nation as long as we have believers such as you.
Fred Lee and the Lee Family Less we forget to chuckle: Smith climbs to the top of Mt. Sinai to get close enough to talk to God. Looking up, he asks the Lord… “God, what does a million years mean to you?” The Lord replies, “A minute.” Smith asks, “And what does a million dollars mean to you?” The Lord replies, “A penny.” Smith asks, “Can I have a penny?” The Lord replies, “In a minute.”

Hello Again
Dad hired a local plumber to put in a new complete bathroom. You know we thought we were big shots. Several of our farm friends visited my mother for a cup of hot tea with a slice of Irish soda bread and naturally to use the indoor- modern bathroom complete with a john. Boy, we Lee’s were living high on the hog.

really wants something, here are a few things you can drop a hint about: • Power tools: The key word with handheld power tools is “rechargeable.” While corded power tools provide a consistent flow of electricity and reliable power, cordless drills are DIYers’ go-to standard because they can simply pull them off the charger and use them anywhere, no need to look for an outlet or extension cord.

Prices: $40 to $249 • Portability: Most DIYers have more than one toolbox and, as their tool collection grows, they’re always on the lookout for one that meets their carry-around needs. Consider tucking a spare tool belt and some basic staples like a tape measure and screwdriver set into a durable toolbox. Prices: $8 to $90 • Spares: While it’s impossible to have an extra of everything, extra screws, nuts, bolts, nails and other hardware are essential to have around. Look for combination kits like picture hanger assortments, specialty nail and screw sizes, and cabinet and drawer hardware like handles and hinges for emergency repairs. • Cleanup: A wet/dry vacuum is an important and versatile part of any workshop. If your DIYer doesn’t have one of these yet, there are affordable models available. Prices: $49 to $400. HOME TIP: “I never ask my husband directly what tools or items he wants for Christmas. Instead, I ask him about the project he’s working on. There’s always some tool or part he’s missing; I just note it down and buy it for him.” — Tara L., Richmond, VA (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc. ers during the last few years. Working from observation and her own photographs, Ms. Deming’s goal was to enjoy the forms and colors of familiar subjects, using unique compositions to give each painting strong artistic character. Other paintings by the artist on display will include pastels and watercolors, in a range of sizes, subject matter, and artistic style. Ms. Deming was born in the High Peaks of the
A d i r o n d a c k Mountains and now lives and paints on 140 acres of woods and meadows in Remsen, NY. She is a graduate of Skidmore College and Syracuse University, and spent over 30 years as an art educator in Holland Patent Schools. She is a signature member of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America and the Central New York Watercolor Society, as well as the Pastel Society of America. She

card damaged sets or repair them before using. Fasten outdoor lights securely to trees, house, walls or other firm support to protect from wind damage. Use no more than three standard-size sets of lights per single extension cord. Turn off all lights on trees and other decorations when you go to bed or leave the house. Lights could short and start a fire. Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become charged with electricity from
faulty lights, and any person touching a branch could be electrocuted! To avoid this danger, use colored spotlights above or beside a tree, never fastened onto it! Keep “bubbling” lights away from children. These lights with their bright colors and bubbling movement can tempt curious children to break candle-shaped glass, which can cut, and attempt to drink liquid, which contains a hazardous chemical. Holiday decoration safety tips Trees Many artificial trees are fire resistant. If you buy one, look for a statement specifying this protection. A fresh tree will stay green longer and be less of a fire hazard than a dry tree. To check for freshness, remember: - A fresh tree is green. - Fresh needles are hard to pull from branches. - When bent between your fingers, fresh needles do not break. - The trunk butt of a fresh tree is sticky with resin. - When the trunk of a tree is bounced on the ground, a shower of falling needles shows that tree is too dry. Place tree away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources. Heated rooms dry trees out rapidly, creating fire hazards. Cut off about two inches of the trunk to expose fresh wood for better water absorption. Trim away branches as necessary to set tree trunk in the base of a sturdy, water-holding stand with wide spread feet. Keep the stand filled with water while the tree is indoors. Place the tree out of the way of traffic and do not block doorways. Use thin guy-wires to secure a large tree to walls or ceiling. These wires are almost invisible. Lights Indoors or outside, use only lights that have been tested for safety. Identify these by the label from an independent testing laboratory. Check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Dis-

CSA star mark on your gas-fired furnace to ensure it has been tested and certified to the applicable standard. • Never use gasoline or other flammable liquids near your gas furnace. • Don’t store combustible materials such as paper, chemicals, paint, rags and cleaning products close to your gas furnace. Gas fireplace: • Check that the glass panel is intact. Do not use your gas fireplace if the glass panel is removed, cracked or broken. Glass panels and frame assemblies should only be replaced by a qualified service person. • Check for the mark of an accredited certification organization, such as the star mark from CSA Group when purchasing a gas fireplace. Space heaters: • Check for wear on the electrical cord. If it’s damaged, replace the entire unit or have the cord re-
placed by a qualified repair person. • Keep it clean by dusting or vacuuming it regularly. Always turn the unit off first. • Keep the heater clear of furniture, rugs and drapes to allow free air movement and avoid overheating. • Look for certified third-party verification marks like CSA Group’s certification mark. This shows that the heater complies with recognized safety standards. • Turn the heater down or off before going to sleep and keep it out of pathways and well away from bedding and clothes. Turn it off when leaving the house. • Install a smoke alarm in the room with the space heater. • Have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms installed throughout the home. by Katie Ranno This Thanksgiving, the First Baptist Church of Little Falls held their 21st annual Thanksgiving Day outreach. According to Reverend Chris Wintermute, lead pastor of First Baptist, this communitywide event was started by Dawes Dunham, who was once a pastor at the church. He created the event with the purpose of giving the students in the church’s teen ministry the desire to help others in the community. Pastor Wintermute also sees this as a good opportunity for the teens in the ministry, saying that this gives them the chance to serve others without looking for a return. About 45 to 50 meals are ordered as deliveries every year, designating 6 to 9 drivers to deliver these meals, along with the help of teens who come along for the ride and brighten the days of those they deliver to. “They greatly appreciate the dinner and the visit,” said Pastor Wintermute of those whom they deliver to. Much fellowship is done in house as well. Teens are asked to help in many areas of the event, from greeting people at the door, to helping them down the stairs, to even sitting down and enjoying a conversation with them while they eat. Some of the teens have been helping out with this event for years, like Marleen and Cindy Smith and Mikayla Wintermute, who say they get involved because it’s nice to help others, and it’s nice to get to know others in the community and serve those in the area. This year also brought in some first time helpers, like Marcus who says that he came out because he also feels that it’s nice to help others. Fellow first timer Seth Rhyne says he decided to help out because it’s, “The reason for the season.” Many people from the community come out for this event, and many of these community members come out every year. Shirley Haponsk has been coming out to the event for the past 10 years, say-

Give your car a brake (NAPSA) — If you’re like most motorists, you’re concerned about safety. In fact, research shows that vehicle safety is a top motivator for most motorists when it comes to vehicle maintenance and the brake system is at the top of the vehicle safety checklist. “Brakes are a normal wear item for any car and eventually they’re going to need to be replaced for both performance and safety reasons,” explained Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “A properly operating brake system helps ensure safe vehicle operation and control under a variety of conditions. However, many motorists are unaware of the signs and symptoms that their brake system may need maintenance or repair.” What to look for It’s important to be alert and recognize the warning signs of brake trouble. If your car is pulling to the left or right, or if you hear odd noises when you apply the brakes, you should inspect your brakes. Other warning signs include an illuminated brake warning light, brake grab-
bing, low pedal feel, vibration, hard pedal feel and squealing. What to do For routine maintenance, check your vehicle’s braking system at least once a year. A thorough inspection should include brake lining wear, brake fluid level, rotor thickness, condition of hoses and brake lines, brake and dash warning lights, as well as taking the car for a test-drive to detect other potential brake system problems. What not to do Several factors that affect brake wear include driving habits, operating conditions, vehicle type and the quality of the brake lining material. “Never put off routine brake inspections or any needed repair, such as letting the brakes get to the ‘metal-to-metal’ point, which can be potentially dangerous and lead to a more costly repair bill,” White added. “If you haven’t checked your brakes in the past year, it’s a great time to ‘give your car a brake’ and make sure it’s in safe working condition.” For a “Car Care Guide” or more information, visit www.carcare.org.
Seven ways to save on auto insurance (NAPSA) — What you pay for your auto insurance can vary by hundreds of dollars, depending on what type of car you drive, your accident history and the insurance company that provides the policy. To save money on your auto insurance policy, keep these seven tips in mind: 1. Ask about discounts. You may qualify for one if you haven’t had any accidents or moving violations for several years. If you drive a lower than average number of miles a year, you may qualify for low mileage discounts. Ask your insurance agent about discounts for: • Antitheft devices • Defensive driving courses • Long-time customers • Insuring more than one car • No accidents in three years • No moving violations in three years • Student drivers with good grades. 2. Get multiple quotes. Rates can vary greatly and they change often. Review your coverage at least annually. 3. Reduce coverage on older cars. Consider dropping collision or comprehensive coverage
on older cars. If the car is worth less than 10 times the annual premium, buying coverage may not be cost-effective. You can look up the value of your car at Kelley Blue Book, www.kbb.com. 4. Ask for a higher deductible. Deducti-bles are what you pay out before your insurance kicks in. By getting higher ones, you can lower your costs substantially. Before choosing a higher deductible, however, set aside enough money to pay for needed repairs. 5. Bundle your insurance. You can often get a break if you buy two or more types of insurance from the same provider, such as auto and homeowners. You may also get a discount if you have more than one vehicle in-
sured with the same company. 6. Compare costs. Some companies offer a discount if you drive a hybrid or low-profile car. Before you buy a new or used car, check into the insurance costs. 7. Maintain a good credit record. Most insurers factor credit into pricing auto insurance policies. To protect your credit standing, pay your bills on time, don’t get more credit than you need and keep your credit balances as low as possible. Check your credit record regularly and have any errors corrected promptly. V i s i t www.wellsfargo.com/insurance to learn more.
