Outdoor safety Dress for the season Winter has arrived and you should dress for the season. 1. Wear loose, lightweight, warm clothing in several layers. Trapped air between the layers acts as an insulator. Layers can be removed to avoid perspiration and subsequent chill. 2. Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent and hooded. 3. Always wear a hat or cap on your head since half of your body heat could be lost through an uncovered head. 4. Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs from extreme cold. 5. Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves because fingers maintain more warmth when they touch each other. Physical exertion Winter storm conditions and cold waves are the deadliest types of

weather. Cold temperatures put an extra strain on your heart. Heavy exertion, such as shoveling snow, clearing debris or pushing a car, increase the risk of a heart attack. To avoid problems, remember these tips: 1. Stay warm, dress warm and SLOW DOWN when working outdoors. 2. Take frequent rests to avoid over exertion. 3. If you feel chest pain — STOP and seek help immediately. Winter sports safety New York State offers an abundance of sports activities during the winter season. From skiing and snowboarding to ice climbing, hiking and other outdoor pursuits, parents and children should follow the safety rules of the sport. 1. Most importantly, use the proper equipment and check to make sure everything is in proper working condition. A well-fitting ANSI/SNELL

Winter is a fun time for children, but it also may be dangerous. Parents should be aware of some simple safety tips for their children when they go sledding or tobogganing: 1. Children should never use streets or roads for sledding unless they are blocked off from traffic. 2. Children should sled only during daytime hours. 3. Do not sled on icy hills. Sledding hills should be only snow covered. 4. Avoid sledding over snow bumps or anything that may cause the sled to become airborne. 5. Never sled alone. An adult should always accompany small children. 6. Children should stay out of the paths of other sledders. In addition, if the slopes become busy, they should move off them quickly. Parents, if you are sledding with your children, follow these rules yourselves.

Safe skating Winter is a fun time for children, but it also may be dangerous. Parents should be aware of some simple safety tips for their children when they go ice-skating: 1. If possible, skate at areas that have been approved and posted for iceskating. 2. Never skate alone. Always have at least two people present. 3. Children should never be allowed to skate on a pond unsupervised. 4. Remember ice thickness is never consistent on lakes and ponds. Water currents, particularly around narrow spots, bridges, inlets and outlets are always suspect for thin ice. 5. Stay away from cracks, seams, pressure ridges, slushy areas and darker areas that signify thinner ice. 6. Never skate after dark. S o u r c e : www.dhses.ny.gov

Dress in multiple, lightweight layers to stay warm and dry while enjoying the outdoors. Check the weather forecast but be prepared for anything. 3. If you are heading into the backcountry, never travel alone. Let someone know your route and estimated time of return. 4. Skiers and snowboarders should go on runs that are appropriate for their ability. Stay in control at all times and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects. Obey all posted signs and warnings. 5. No matter what sport you participate in, always focus 100 percent of your attention on the activity and the terrain you are on. Moreover, rest when you are tired. Safe sledding

Many Christmas traditions are older than some celebrants might think. The tradition of lighting up a Christmas tree, for example, dates back to the days before Christmas lights. Before electric-powered twinkle lights were invented and even before electricity was discovered, people used actual candles to adorn the Christmas tree. As one can imagine, having an open flame next to a dried-out tree made for some fast fires. That’s why it was customary to keep a bucket of water next to the tree as well. As if fire wasn’t enough, the tinsel used to decorate trees was made from strips of silver and even lead — something that is now known to be a health hazard to adults and children alike. Although we’ve come a long way from candles and lead, trees that are overly dry paired with lights that have frayed wires can just as easily lead to fires. Plus, plastic tinsel can be a choking hazard for children and pets. One Christmas staple that has lost its status as a safety hazard is the poinsettia plant. Poinsettias are a tropical plant that have become a fixture during the Christmas season. It has long been thought that poinsettias are poisonous to people and animals. While there is some toxicity to the plant, it would require the ingestion of hundreds of leaves to get a toxic dose of a plant’s poison. Ingestion may simply cause a case of vomiting or diarrhea instead. But poinsettia leaves are said to have an unpleasant taste, so one bite and most children and animals will probably turn away. Perhaps one of the biggest hazards come Christmas — both then and now — is not having enough turkey or eggnog to go around for holiday guests!

choice for building since the first settlers arrived in this new country. The early forests along the Connecticut and other large rivers greeted new explorers with white pines sometimes reaching over 200 feet in the air. These first trees were cleared to farm the rich soil beneath and the wood from the white pine was used to build homes and barns. It didn’t take long for the King of England to realize the value of the white pine for building ships, in particular the mast of the ship. Exceptionally large specimens of white pine were once marked as property of the King, destined for use by the Royal Navy. These giant trees were felled, dragged out of the woods by oxen teams and loaded into barge like vessels. To make transporting, handling and shipping easier the mast trees were squared after felling. A 100 foot mast tree was

typically 3 foot by 3 foot at the butt and 2 foot by 2 foot at the top and a 120 foot mast was 4 foot by 4 foot at the butt and 30 inches square at the top. Generally about 50 masts fit into a barge. As you might imagine, ownership of these trees by the King was a bone of contention among the colonists and was one of many issues that led to the American Revolution. During the Revolution it became great sport among the Patriots to see who could fell and destroy the most king’s mast trees. Eventually the use of whole trees as ship’s masts gave way to the use of laminated wood which coincidentally is more impact resistant against cannonballs. Today’s white pine are not quite as massive as those of the pre-colonial forests however the largest specimens in the northeast measure between 160 and 180 feet tall. The wood of white pine is soft, light

and yet very strong making it an ideal wood for building just about anything from log cabins, to trim work, to the inside frames of replacement windows. Several sawmills in Grafton County saw white pine and it accounts for the majority of all sawed species in New Hampshire. The value of a pine saw log is measured by straightness and lack of knots therefor a tree which is destined to become lumber must be straight, have little rot and very few dead branches. White pine is susceptible to many insects and diseases including white pine weevil, needle cast diseases, blister rust, and calliopsis canker. Some of these cause eventual mortality of trees and others simply a loss of measurable tree value. White pine is best suited to grow on well drained, sandy sites where it regenerates easily, naturally or through timber harvesting. Other sites that

are better suited to hardwoods often have white pine growing there now because of past land use history, mostly historical farming and grazing. However these sites are

not destined to maintain pine forever and will eventually be occupied by other species such as hardwoods and sometimes balsam fir.

Preparing for winter weather travel Has your car, van, or pickup truck had a vehicle checkup lately? Now is the time to make sure your automobile can survive the coming winter weather. Check the tires, battery and brakes, along with the heating and defrosting system. Change the antifreeze, if needed, to protect the engine and radiator from freezing up in the cold temperatures that will be with us this winter. When a snow storm or ice storm is expected to affect any part of your travel route, here is an important question to ask yourself: Is the need to make the trip a matter of life or death? If the answer is no, then don’t go. Keep in mind that the weather may be okay in your town, but hazardous winter driving conditions could exist only a few miles away. Remember, a blizzard or dangerous ice storm can cause the trip itself to become a life threatening situation. Nearly 60 people die in the United States each year, hundreds more are injured, and tens of thousands are stranded on the side of the road due to winter storms and bitterly cold temperatures. by David Falkenham, UNH Cooperative Extension Grafton County Forester As I walk through the woods the frozen fall leaves crunch loudly underfoot, making quiet conversation nearly impossible. With two hard frosts under our belts the foliage of the birches, maples, aspen and ash are tumbling to the ground at a rapid pace. The winds of summer, soft and muffled by dense green leaves are replaced by fall winds, harsher in their sound and feel. The cold breezes blowing through leafless trees tells a tale for the coming months. These breezes would be much more harsh were it not for the presence of our stately white pine which is always green to soften the fall and winter winds. The mighty white pine, tallest tree species east of the Mississippi, adds softness to our winds and beauty to our forests. It has been the wood of

Family Fundamentals: Confusion, memory problems common in elderly Q: My dad is approaching 70 and seems to be getting more confused and forgetful. We don’t think it’s anything serious right now, but should we be worried about dementia? A: Occasional lapses of memory are nothing to worry about, whether you’re age 40 or 80. But forgetfulness does become more common as we age. It takes longer for the brain to process new information, and it’s harder to recall things we’ve known in the past. In addition, distractions are more disruptive as we get older and can

cause us to lose focus on what we’re doing. According to the National Institute on Aging, stress, anxiety or depression can cause more problems with confusion and forgetfulness. If your father is dealing with loneliness, boredom or other emotional problems, be as supportive as possible. If his confusion persists over a long period, seek help from a doctor or counselor. Other health issues could also affect memory and brain function, including a deficiency of vitamin B12, chronic alco-

holism or even (very rarely) a brain tumor. Some types of thyroid, kidney or liver disorders can also cause such problems. These are all serious medical conditions and need to be treated by a doctor. Some medications also can affect the memory. Even more serious would be dementia caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other problems. Anyone experiencing an abrupt loss of memory or a sudden bout of confusion should see a doctor immediately: It could be a sign of vascu-

lar dementia caused by a series of strokes or other changes to the brain’s blood supply. Alzheimer’s disease is usually slower to develop. Symptoms that should prompt a call to a doctor include: • Asking the same question over and over. • Becoming lost in familiar places. • Not being able to follow directions. • Getting confused about time, people and places. • Not taking care of oneself - eating poorly, not bathing or being un-

safe. Barring any serious medical problems, your father can take steps to help sharpen his ability to keep on track: • Plan tasks, make “to do” lists, and use memory aids like notes and calendars. • Stay involved in activities that stimulate the mind, and keep physically active. • Eat a healthy diet, including almonds and walnuts; fruits and vegetables; fish and shellfish; and dark chocolate in small amounts. • Limit alcohol use, and

if he smokes, stop. More information is available from several reliable sources, including the American Medical Association and the National Institute on Aging. Chow Line: Understanding HDLs can be complex I have always been proud of my high HDL level, but I heard recently that it might not be very important in terms of heart disease after all. What happened? Well, not so fast. You probably heard about a study that the medical journal The Lancet published online in May 2012. It received a

lot of publicity because its findings were rather startling: After years of advising people to do what they can to raise their levels of HDLs — high-density lipoproteins, or what we’ve called the “good” cholesterol — researchers found that the 15 HDL-raising genetic variants they tested are not, in fact, linked to a re-

duced risk of heart attack. However (and this is important): The scientists also emphasized that low HDL levels remain a good predictor, or what they call a “biomarker,” that a person has a higher risk of heart disease. This study revealed that low HDL levels themselves aren’t actually the bad guys — it appears that they’re just somehow associated with some asyet-undetermined factor that increases the risk of heart disease. So, for people who have a low HDL level, increasing it — by changing the diet or taking supplements, for example — won’t lower the risk of heart disease in and of itself. Raising a low HDL level simply won’t change the underlying factors that signal an increased risk. At the same time, eating a healthy, balanced

diet has many benefits. If it increases your HDLs at the same time, there’s certainly no harm in that. It’s also important to realize that this finding does not affect recommendations regarding LDLs, or low-density lipoproteins. And, while genetic factors play a strong role in determining LDL levels, there’s a lot you can do to keep them as low as possible, including avoiding trans fats; keeping saturated fats low (less than 7 percent of your total calories); limiting total fat to 25 to 35 percent of total calories; keeping cholesterol intake to less than 200 milligrams a day; consuming 2 grams of plant stanols or sterols a day; increasing soluble fiber to 10 to 25 grams a day; and maintaining a healthy weight. In addition, get at least 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise most days of the week, if not every day. And, when necessary, take prescribed medication, such as statins, to lower LDLs. Customer surveys conducted as part of creating healthy places “vegetable promotion” HERKIMER, NY — Onehundred-seventy customers were surveyed at The Country Store in Salisbury, Havers’ Nice-nEasy in Poland, Melrose Market in Frankfort, and Big M in Dolgeville as part of a pilot project to increase access and promote using more fresh vegetables in Herkimer County. The project is part of the Creating Healthy Places grant from Herkimer County HealthNet working with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Herkimer County.

Customers were asked if they had seen the display in the store’s produce section with information on the vegetable and recipe of the month along with the Herkimer County Local Foods map. Eightyone customers had noticed the display and several commented on the information that they had taken. One customer liked the information about Herkimer County Farmers’ Market locations listed on the map. Another commented how much they enjoyed the Herkimer

County Produce Cycle brochures on various vegetables. Promotion of vegetables in the store displays has also resulted in an increase in vegetable sales. One store had a 333 percent increase in tomato sales during the time tomatoes were promoted on the store display. Another store increased carrot sales by 115 percent when carrots were featured in the exhibit. Customers were asked if there is anything that would encourage them to buy more fresh vegetables. Responses included lower prices, better and bigger selection, freshness and quality, organic, convenience of having access close to home, locally grown, and better advertising and displays. Several customers shared that they grow their own fresh vegetables; so they liked the information on growing vegetables included in
