January 9, 2013 For a couple of years or more, my wife has been trying to encourage me to read “The Best of James Herriot – Favorite Memories of a Country Vet.” So earlier this evening with one eye on the television, I read the first 30 pages of his memories. While I enjoyed learning about Dr. James Herriot and his early days in the practice of veterinary medicine in the hill country of England, my mind kept wandering back to a few evenings I traveled with a well-known Fort Plain veterinarian as he visited dairy farms around Canajoharie, Palatine Bridge, Caroga Lake, Johnstown and St. Johnsville. At the time of our first trip together, I knew very little about the good doctor, his practice, or education. With the publishing business, I owned a dairy farm on Cunningham Road just east of Canajoharie. As we traveled along in his vet vehicle, we chatted about a little of this and that. I was beginning to think he was quite possibly a sort of egghead until I asked him where we were going. He answered, “Out near Ames. The farmer has a cow with a severe case of hollow horn.” While he didn’t seem like the type to be pulling my leg, I asked him what the cure for hollow horn was and without any indication of humor, he said, “I’m not usually sure until I see the horn,” or something like that. Now that several years have passed since Doc retired from his own practice, I wonder how many cases of hollow horn he cured, especially in a herd of polled Herefords. (They are hornless by nature and horned cattle already have hollow horns.) Pastor Dan West reminded me that polled Herefords without any legs are called ground beef. I imagine you are starting to question my choice of friends. Possibly I never chose, just got stuck with them, or the reverse is true. Until I met and traveled with Doc, I possibly thought that veterinarians had a relatively easy way of life. That was before I learned that nearly every night, regardless of road, time, or weather conditions, when a farmer phoned with a cow down sick with milk fever or a horse hardly able to breath, Doc was expected to be at the farm without excuse. I imagine he could put off a case of hollow horn for a day or two. I later learned this soft-spoken country humorist graduated from Cornell University and was a teaching professor at Purdue. Before setting this chatter into type, I asked a St. Johnsville retired attorney if I could be held liable for including this in Hello Again and he answered, “Only if you get caught.” Do you need new friends? I’ve got three I will loan to you: a pastor, a doctor, and an attorney. In fact, this Christmas season I will give them to you. While reading one of James Herriot’s novels, I ran across the word “somnambulistic” and wondered why anyone in his right mind would concoct and use such a word. I’m sure that a great orator and wordsmith such as Winston Churchill would never have repeated it in public, less he be accused of blowing off steam. According to Mr. Webster, it means sleepwalking. After using the word sleepwalking to refer to sleepwalking, do you feel like an ignoramus because you didn’t say somnambulistic? To me it does sound like some – bull. Now I’m sure we both have found a word we will never use. This little chatter seems to point out one of the major faults in our socalled higher education. We are forced to learn so much that we will never use and skip so much of what we do need to know. Do you know how to read your electric meter and figure your light bill? How to convert square feet into square yards so you can know the cost of carpet at $15 per square yard? Or who has the right of way on a New York State highway – you with your
Over in the hill country there was an ant that worked hard all day in the fields. It was summer and the ant was busy cutting grass and dragging it home. The ant had a grasshopper for a neighbor. The grasshopper lived on welfare and sat in his doorway singing all day. When winter came, the ant had a whole bale of grass. But the ant had violated the Federal Farm Law for over-harvesting grass. He was fined $162.50 and the surplus was seized. The grasshopper received the surplus in exchange for his food stamps. I can hear old Abe saying, “Shiver my timbers – I thought I did away with slavery.” Well Christmas and New Year’s Eve have come and gone. So has the 365 days and nights of the year 2012. Around the 20th of December I noticed Santa’s big red cattle truck was no longer seen in the area. Also, I was told Santa, in an attempt to become more fashionable, had his whiskers trimmed. Early this morning when I took our dog Toby out for his walk, I noticed strange hoof prints in the driveway snow but the snow at the bottom of the garage overhead door had not been disturbed. I opened the overhead door and found my three-wheeled Spyder motorcycle was sitting there all shined up in its regular stall. While I am pleased that my red Spyder was able to help Santa – how did he return it to its regular garage space without disturbing the snow? This week I will have to keep my eye open for Santa’s red cattle truck. Maybe he will take off a few deserved weeks and head south. I’m glad he didn’t take my red Spyder roadster with him. I was going to ask my wife what she thought about all of this. I feel reasonably sure she would accuse me of becoming a little somnambulistic or a candidate for Santa to give me a ride in his bright red cattle truck up to the funny farm. Adventures in snowshoeing Snowshoeing is a wintertime activity that can be enjoyable and healthy for all ages. Enthusiasts say that snowshoeing is truly an activity that anyone can enjoy — from children to seniors. As long as a person is able to walk, he or she can also try snowshoeing. According to research provided by Snowsports Industries America, 40.8 percent of snowshoers are women, 9.4 percent of snowshoers are children (ages 7 to 11), and 44.2 percent of snowshoers are between the ages of 25 to 44. There are a number of reasons to try snowshoeing: • It is a relatively inexpensive sport to try because there is limited equipment and most of it can be rented. • Snowshoeing provides a unique perspective on the outdoors. • The activity is a great form of cardiovascular exercise, as the shoe and the snow provide an added measure of resistance while walking. The sport helps burn more than 600 calories per hour and can help you burn 45 percent more calories than walking or running at the same speed. • Snowshoeing is easily a social group activity. • It poses little risk for injury. One of the main advantages to snowshoeing is that oftentimes the first time you head out you’ve easily grasped the concept. Unlike other sports that take practice to mas-
termine when the snowshoe was first used, but it is known that snowshoes were used more than 12,000 years ago. It is believed the first snowshoe was made from solid wood and animal skins. Natives of North America relied on a form of snowshoe to traverse the landscape during hunting and other chores. Although the first snowshoe designs were made from what people could find and were primitive in nature, they set the course for more intricate designs and hightech materials. When selecting snowshoes, beginners can choose among recreational snowshoes. Usually, these snowshoes work best on simple terrain that doesn’t require a lot of steep climbing or descents. For avid snowshoers or those who compete, aerobic snowshoes or ones designed for hiking are more durable and may be the smart buy. Many experts advise against purchasing used snowshoes, because you won’t be sure what you’re getting. Snowshoes can be rented, but they are relatively inexpensive to buy new, ranging from $100 to $300. Snowshoes are sized according to your weight. The most common sizes are 25, 30 and 36 inches. Working with an educated retailer will ensure you get the right size shoe. Snowshoeing can be done anywhere there is snow. It doesn’t require

Preventing the spread of germs when away from home (BPT) — Eighty percent of infections are spread by dirty hands, and when you’re at home, limiting your exposure to germs with an active hand cleaning schedule can become a familiar endeavor. But it becomes a different

While hand sanitizer solutions don’t literally clean hands because they don’t remove organic matter, such as grease, dirt and blood, they do neutralize germs, especially when you’re in a location where a sink and soap aren’t always handy. For maximum effectiveness, make sure to rub your hands until fully dried. • Educational signs everywhere — During the cold and flu season, and at many other times of the year, you may notice signs posted on entry doors, hanging in bathrooms and even near service desks educating the public on everything from the proper method of washing hands to effectively covering a sneeze and reducing the spread of germs. For a refresher, the American
Medical Association and the American Academy of Family Physicians promote The Four Principles of Hand Awareness: 1. Wash and dry your hands when they are dirty and before eating. 2. Do not cough into your hands. 3. Do not sneeze into your hands. 4. Above all, do not put your fingers into your eyes, nose or mouth. • Germ-targeting products — Numerous studies show that using paper towels rather than hand dryers is more hygienic. This is usually attributed to the fact that hand dryers, themselves, are often not properly sanitized and in fact don’t thoroughly dry the hands, but instead blow warm, moist, contaminated air around, potentially spreading germs. This year, you may even notice public restrooms stocking enhanced hygiene paper towel products like the distinctly green-colored Cascades Antibacterial paper towels, which releases a safe active in-
gredient when wet hands contact the dry towels, eliminating over 99 percent of bacteria on hands. • Increased availability of flu shots — More and more public settings are offering flu shots for walk-ins at convenient hours. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people 6 months and older receive the flu shot every year. People who have asthma, diabetes and chronic lung disease, are pregnant or over the age of 65 — or living with or caring for people with these conditions — are highly encouraged to get the flu shot. Businesses, government locations and other public settings are using these and other methods to help visitors prevent the spread of germs. Of course, when you’re outside the home working at the office, going to school, staying in a hotel or visiting a hospital, keep in mind it’s up to you to take hygiene “into your own hands.”

This is a hammer by Samantha Mazzotta New door locks add security, style Q: We’re buying a new house in a couple of months, and one of my friends mentioned that once the purchase is final and before we move in, I should replace all the doorknobs and locks on the exterior doors for security purposes. Is this really something we should do? What’s the best way to replace them? — Clark in Syracuse, NY A: While I haven’t heard a lot about changing doorknobs and deadbolts on new homes for
security purposes (you could just have the locks rekeyed), it certainly wouldn’t hurt to do so. In addition to having new locks that no one else has the key to, you get the added benefit of choosing new styles of hardware for your exterior doors. Once you’ve picked out the new doorknobs and deadbolts, remove and replace the old hardware one at a time. If there are any problems with installing the locks, you’ll at least have one working lock on the door while you solve the problem. Remove the doorknob
by first taking off the cover plates. There may be screws holding the plates in place; unscrew and remove those. If there are no visible screws, check the doorknob on the interior side. A small slot should be visible on one side of the handle, usually behind the knob. You should be able to push in the small metal piece inside the slot, using a paper clip or even the tip of a key, until the knob pops loose. Now take off the cover plate. An underlying plate will be visible. This can be popped off by locating a
small notch on the edge of the plate where it presses against the door. Insert a flat head screwdriver into the notch and gently twist it to loosen the plate. Now you’re free to unscrew the attaching screws that hold the doorknob assembly. You also will need to remove the screws from the latch plate on the side of the door. Remove the assembly carefully so you don’t damage the door. If you intend to replace the strike plate as well, remove that from the door frame.
To install a new doorknob, reverse the above procedure. You may find that the new doorknob doesn’t line up quite the same as the old. You can adjust the backset (the distance between the center of the doorknob and the edge of the door) to correct this. If you replace the strike plate, make sure the latch hits it correctly. Tighten up all the screws, being sure not to overtighten, and test to make sure the door latches and locks properly. Replacing a deadbolt lock is very similar to re-
placing the doorknob. The biggest difference (and difficulty) is if a door does not already have a deadbolt installed. In that case you’ll have to drill holes for the deadbolt and the latch before installing the new hardware. HOME TIP: Maintain exterior door locks by cleaning and lubricating with a professional-quality product like Lockease or Tri-Flow, rather than squirting in graphite powder. Getting started So how do you get started making changes in how you care for your health? It’s all a matter of trying and learning. It’s about choosing a goal and working to-
ward reaching your goal. Making a plan and taking the first step will help you reach your goal.
The National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) provides a number of tools to help you better understand HOW to make changes in your day-to-day life to help you stay healthy. If you are ready to take the first step toward better health, the NDEP’s Just One Step resource is a great place to start. This tool helps you identify one small step to take for a short period of time (such as one month) to begin to implement healthy changes. Once you have taken a few steps, you may need help making these changes stick as part of a daily routine. This becomes much easier if you ‘Make A Plan.’ NDEP’s Make A Plan tool can help you think about what is important to your health and how to make a plan to help you reach your goal. The NDEP’s Diabetes HealthSense website, provides easy access to resources that can support people with diabetes and those at risk for the disease in making lifestyle changes and coping with the demands of diabetes. The Gift Card Federal Law Act, passed in 2010, covered a number of problems with gift cards, but it did not cover all possible contingencies. Tennessee and Maine, state laws are in conflict with federal laws. In these states, cards that haven’t been used within two years are considered “unclaimed property.” In some other states, it’s three years. In yet other states, it’s against the law to sell gift cards with any expiration date. When the property is “unclaimed,” the value reverts to the store. If you have an old, unused card, consult your state’s laws for specifics. Cards good for brickand-mortar stores aren’t necessarily good for that store’s online branch. If you received an “all purpose” card issued by a bank, as opposed to one that is specific to a store, you might be charged a purchase fee. If you have a store-specific card and the busi-
ness goes bankrupt, you’re out of luck. The card itself can expire even if it still has a cash amount available on it. You might have to pay to have the card replaced. “Gift cards” that really aren’t gift cards aren’t protected under the new rules. Charges cannot be deducted for one year on any inactive card, and then not more than once in a month. Your best bet: If any packaging came with your gift card, read the fine print. If you were given the receipt with the card, hold
