Hello Again January 23, 2013 What would you learn from reading the August 4, 1966 weekly St. Johnsville Enterprise newspaper? Peg Davis celebrated a birthday on August 9th. The community theater marquee was advertising a movie. James Stewart and Maureen O’Hara were starring in “The Rare Breed,” a western, plus Elvis in “It Happened at the World’s Fair.” The same August 4th edition carried the obituary of Charles Gee, 71, of 9 Ann Street, St. Johnsville, who died July 29th in Little Falls Hospital. It appears Mr. Gee came to St. Johnsville from Weldon, Illinois in 1934 and from then on until 1941 was the proprietor of the C & M Forwarding Company, at that time one of the larger firms hauling autos from Great Lakes ports to the eastern seaboard dealers. From the son of one of the C & M drivers, Harold Estes, native of St. Johnsville, we learned that Gee owned 54 large auto transport trucks. Each truck would carry 4 new cars, which meant 216 new autos. Assuming each truck delivered two loads each week for 52 weeks, the Gee trucks were responsible for over 22,400 new autos each year. The St. Johnsville C & M Forwarding Company’s specialty was one of the finest cars manufactured in the U.S., the Packard. Not everyone could afford such a fine automobile. As a boy I remember some of the Packards. During the 1930’s, the Packard was a large car with a distinctive chrome front grill, bright red diamond-shaped insignia or logo on all of the wheels. Naturally the tires were large and white-walled. Today one of those beauties would be any man’s dream.

The checkout girl said, “How long ago did this happen?” After the woman said it happened about 20 minutes ago, the checkout girl pointed to the sign that read, “All errors in change must be reported at the time of checkout or they will not be corrected…Management.” The shopper said, “You mean I’m too late?” “I’m afraid so.” “All right,” she said, walking out. “Too late is too late. I just wanted you to know you gave me $10 too much change.” A couple of hot air balloonists were cruising over the countryside and had no idea of their location. Finally, they were able to land in a farm field and hiked out to the road where they spotted a man on a bicycle eyeing the strange-looking apparatus in the field. “Where are we?” asked one of the balloonists. “You’re in a field,” the guy on the bike replied. The other balloonist then asked, “You don’t happen to be an accountant, do you?” “Why, yes, I am,” the bicyclist responded. “How did you know?” “Well, the balloonist answered, “your answer was absolutely correct, but totally useless.” I know how the balloonist felt. Our company utilizes both staff accountants and an outside accounting firm to furnish us with information – that we sometimes wish we didn’t know anything about. While the Packard Twelve was setting a standard for the classic expensive era, Henry Ford’s son Edsel of the Ford Motor Car Company was forging ahead with the introduction and mass production of two Ford models with their own classic look – the Ford Model A Coupe and the more classic 1934 Ford V-8-Phaeton.

This 1933 Packard Twelve Custom Dietrich Convertible Sedan certainly is a great example of the Packards of that era. This model 1006 was equipped with a 160 BHP, 445 CU, inside a V12 engine. In 2003 it was valued at $475,000 to $575,000. Can you imagine that our little hamlet of St. Johnsville played such a major role in the national automotive industry? Now it’s 2013 and the front page of the Marketplace section of the world famous Wall Street Journal salutes a “Re-birth of a famous name – the Stingray Corvette.” Chief Executive Dan Akerson stated, “We want to reinforce the fact that it is a halo product and tie it closely to the Chevrolet brand. In other words, to Americans and worldwide to get prospective auto buyers talking favorably about Chevrolets. This concept has always helped to build a products share in the market place. On a real positive side of the GM auto picture, GM executives have stated they believe the U.S. government will place their GM stock back on the stock market. I’m not in favor of either our state or federal government owning an important number of shares of stock in any corporation. I do believe there are numerous ways a government can aid a company without becoming an owner – for example – loans with proper guarantees. An exponent of the power of positive thinking was stressing his point when a member of his class cut in and said, “I believe that opportunity does knock sometimes…but most of the time at our home and especially at mealtime. It’s another lousy salesperson.” Speaking of taking advantage of an opportunity, a thrifty shopper, after checking out at the grocery cashier, returned to the cashier and said, “You gave me the wrong change.”

It is our intent with the line of chatter remembering the C & M Forwarding Company, the trend-setting line of Packard classic cars, GM’s recent announcement of the new 2014 Corvette utilizing the well remembered and respected name Stingray, to point out that business success can enjoy a short life or history-making longevity. Such decisions are always in the hands of people. C & M Forwarding and Packard, for unknown reasons, chose to retire from the business world while General Motors and the Ford Motor Company found ways to change – grow – and forge ahead to become giants. Both of these giants, on several occasions, had severe problems and could both have chosen to quit. While the Palatine Corridor area dream seems to be faltering, I believe we can find new ways to become better than ever. I’m looking out of our office windows – it’s snowing. Part of me wants to write “that awful snow” while I’m sure I should write, “Boy, that snow is awfully purty.” Regardless how we temporarily think, God is not a temporary Heavenly Father. He was always there and always will be. We can and should have complete trust and faith in him. Stay happy until next time – now you can turn the TV on. You should check the condition of the coolant each spring and fall to make sure the additives that protect against corrosion still function. 9. Have any suspicions of a leak checked out at once. Carbon monoxide from your car’s exhaust is odorless, colorless-and lethal. 10. Try to replace your car’s fuel filter every two years or 24,000 miles for best results. 11. During normal driving, you may not notice a light that isn’t working; inspect your car’s lights at every oil change. 12. You should test your battery every fall. If your car’s battery is three years old or more, consider replacing it since the chances of failure increase. 13. Improper ride height of your car can impact alignment angles and cause premature wear of some steering and suspension parts. Test your winter driving skills Today’s modern cars come with a plethora of safety features that protect passengers, particularly in tough winter environments, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have to adjust how you drive to stay safe. While specialized winter driving courses do exist, they may not be available in some areas. If you can’t take a course, Magnante recommends finding an empty, open space (make sure it’s legal), and seeing how your car behaves on winter driving surfaces. “If you can drive around on snow in a way that you’re going slowly, but you can cut the wheel hard, brake hard, you can learn some lessons about what it is to be driving on snow in a place where you can’t hurt yourself or your car, like behind a Walmart parking lot,” says Magnante. 4. Navigate ice and snow with caution If you live in an area that gets a lot of ice or pack snow and it’s allowed, studded snow tires

are a worthy investment. If you only encounter ice periodically during winter, try to drive on the areas of roads that have been treated with sand and salt. If you do slide, he says, “steer into the skid. For example, if the tail of the car is coming out to the right, you want to turn to the right, rather than turn into the left, giving the rear more momentum to swing the car around and spin out.” 5. Use your common sense and be prepared When it comes to heading out on the road, trust your gut feeling and use your common sense. If the weather conditions are rough and your travels aren’t absolutely necessary, stay home until things improve. If you do drive, pack some emergency supplies such as a blanket, boots, insulated mittens, a small shovel and always have your cell charged and ready. Consider storing an extra jug of windshield antifreeze in the trunk so if you run out, you can refill and keep your windows and vision clear. Magnante adds, “You may want check your insurance policy and enhance it in areas, especially if your kids are driving the car.”
