Hello Again February 9, 2013 Hello Again, This is America.
When we travel to Florida we take New York State products as gifts to our friends. Naturally these gifts include apples, apple cider, honey and Palatine Cheddar Cheese. The biggest hit is the cheddar cheese. The next time you intend to visit friends, take along a pound or two of our cheddar cheese — the Palatine Cheese Factory cheddar. Your friends will know you really care.

Are we not a society of common threads? There is one thread more common than most. That thread is the love of homemade apple pie with a slice of oldfashioned cheddar cheese. Now we have a local prize winning cheddar cheese plant right here in Palatine Bridge. The Palatine Cheese Company. If you haven’t tried their famous 1st prize winning cheddar cheese, you are truly missing out. A special treat. I refer to Palatine Cheese as ‘our cheddar’ as it is made right here in ‘our valley’.
In my opinion if the good Lord had inspired writers to write, the Holy Bible since the Declaration of Independence, he would have made it a sin to not eat apple pie with cheddar cheese — especially New York, Herkimer /Montgomery County, cheddar cheese. History claims that Little Falls in Herkimer County was the world headquarters for the production of cheddar cheese. It has been written that Little Falls — Herkimer County cheese established the price for cheddar
cheese all over the country and maybe the world. Herkimer County cheese was known by cheese lovers worldwide. In Little Falls — Cheese Day — was every day. Hundreds of wagons of cans filled with farm fresh milk were delivered by horse and wagon to the cheese factories. This chatter is not blarney. It’s the truth about cheddar. For the New York World’s Fair, a 34,951 lb. block of cheddar cheese was produced. It was estimated that size would use the equivalent of the daily milk production of 16,000 cows. In 2010, the United States produced 3,233,380 lbs. of cheddar cheese. I wonder, has any pizza maker ever tried cheddar cheese instead of mozzarella?
“How could you swindle those honest people who trusted you?” the justice asked. “Your honor,” the conman answered, “It’s nearly impossible to swindle someone who doesn’t trust you.” A blindfolded prisoner, standing 20 paces in front of the firing squad, was asked if he’d like one last cigarette. “No thanks,” he replied. “I’m trying to quit.” A mother asked her son why he lied so much. He answered, “I’m practicing to become a lawyer or a weatherman.” Mom replied, “You already qualify to be a politician.”
It’s about noon Thursday. The weather report is that we are going to be hit with a major snow storm. If you are reading this, it’s probably Saturday or Sunday. Driving tips for winter weather (BPT) — Snow, ice, slush and other winter driving challenges can threaten both driver and passenger safety, and adding distractions into the mix only exacerbates the situation. So instead of dashing through the snow in your four-wheeled “sleigh” and ending up o’er the hills, it may be best to simply drive with caution and focus, to stay on the road this winter.
coolant, no-freeze windshield washer fluid and your gas tank is topped off. Also make sure there are no blockages or obstructions to your heating or window defroster vents. Be sure to pack extra water, a spare tire, ice scraper, snow shovel and brush, blanket, booster cables and a flashlight in your car for emergencies.
Before heading out to the ski lodge or embarking on a winter road trip, take the proper precautions to ensure the safety of yourself, your friends and your family, as well as others on the road. According to Hankook Tire’s latest Winter Gauge Index, 68 percent of those surveyed are worried about skidding across winter’s icy roadways. Try these simple tips for staying safe while driving in winter weather:
With proper preparation you can keep your slipping and sliding confined to the ice rink and make winter pit stops in front of the fireplace instead of in the breakdown lane.
Put distractions on ice: Despite many recent public service announcements and news articles on the dangers of texting and driving, drivers between the ages of 18 and 35 say texting is their top distraction while on the road, according to the Hankook Tire 2012 Fall Gauge Index. Other distractions include talking on the phone, talking to other passengers and eating while driving. Whether driving to a New Year’s party, heading back to school after winter break, or road tripping with a group of friends on a ski trip, it’s important to keep your eyes on the road so you can reach your destination safely. Check your tire tread to prepare for snow: Worn tread is the No. 1 cause of skidding during the winter season, so it is important to make sure your tires are up to the task before hitting the road. A quick way to do this is to check your tires’ tread depth indicators. Tread depth indicators are small raised bars that run in-between a tire’s tread grooves. When a tire’s tread is worn down to these indicator bars, it’s time to change to a new set of tires.

Check your tire pressure: Every 10-degree drop in air temperature can actually cause a vehicle’s tires to lose up to 2 pounds per square inch (psi) in tire pressure. Improper tire pressure can result in increased tread wear and lowered performance, factors that are highly detrimental to one’s safety in undesirable weather driving conditions.

This is a hammer by Samantha Mazzotta Watch for frozen pipes, ice dams Q: I moved this fall from my hometown in South Florida to a small town in the Northeast. I’ve never dealt with freezing winter temperatures and snow before. My dad told me to watch out for frozen pipes, but how do I notice when they’re freezing, and what can I do to prevent it? What other problems should I watch for? — New Guy in Portland, Maine A: The first advice I received when I moved to a Northern state was “bend your knees when you’re shoveling snow.” But there was a little bit
more to know. Fortunately, most homes built in the past 30 years or so in the Northeast have highergrade insulation than homes in the South. So pipes don’t typically freeze at the first sign of frost the way they do in Florida. Still, you’re right to be on your guard. Here are two common winter problems to look out for: • Frozen pipes: During long or very low-temperature freezing spells, keep a tap at the highest level of your home dripping, so that water moves through the pipes. Inspect the pipes in areas where insulation is low or

eaves of a house, particularly the corners, during long cold spells. They’re sometimes caused by damage or air leaks at the edge of the roof, where warm air from inside meets colder air. The bigger the ice dam, the more potential there is for roof damage to occur. If you can safely clear the dam during above-freezing temperatures, do so; otherwise, call a roofing specialist for an evaluation. HOME TIP: Ice melt is a big help in keeping wintry walkways clear, but to prevent damage to nearby plants or lawn, be careful not to overapply it: Read the directions on how much of your selected product to use. You may need to run a hand along the pipe: if you feel an area that’s especially cold, or see frost buildup on a section of pipe, it’s beginning to freeze. If the pipe is swollen or already cracked, you’ve got a bigger problem. To prevent this from happening, drape towels soaked in hot water over the freezing pipe. Place a bucket underneath the towels and pour hot water over the area frequently to thaw the pipes. If the pipes have cracked or burst, shut off water to that section of the house and call a plumber. • Ice dams: These form along the
