Froggy’s — Winner of Local Chili Challenge Sunday, Feb. 10, Froggy’s Take-Out (Seasonal Restaurant) of Ilion, participated in the American Red Cross 11th Annual Invitational Chili Challenge and won “Best Presentation”. The Chili Challenge was held to raise money for the Red Cross local programs. The American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley is committed to the community it serves. Each year, the American Red Cross responds immediately to house or apartment fires, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous materials spills, transportation accidents, explosions and other natural and man-made disasters. Red Cross disaster relief focuses on meeting people’s immediate emergency disastercaused needs. When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter, food and mental health services to address basic hu-

man needs. All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need, through five key service areas: Disaster Relief, Lifesaving Blood, Health and Safety Services, International Services and Supporting America’s Military Families. Owner of Froggy’s Take-Out, Kelley Holmes-Morton, said “We had such a great time at the Chili Challenge and met so many nice people. I think it’s wonderful that the people of our community came out and showed their support. You never know when a disaster can strike and it can happen to anybody, at anytime. It was my pleasure to help the American Red Cross because I like to assist those, that help others!”

Driving tips for winter weather (BPT) — Snow, ice, slush and other winter driving challenges can threaten both driver and passenger safety, and adding distractions into the mix only exacerbates the situation. So instead of dashing through the snow in your four-wheeled “sleigh” and ending up o’er the hills, it may be best to simply drive with caution and focus, to stay on the road this winter. Before heading out to the ski lodge or embarking on a winter road trip, take the proper precautions to ensure the safety of yourself, your friends and your family, as well as others on the road. According to Hankook Tire’s latest Winter Gauge Index, 68 percent of those surveyed are worried about skidding across winter’s icy roadways. Try these simple tips for staying safe while driving in winter weather: Put distractions on ice: Despite many recent public service announcements and news articles on the dangers of texting and driving, drivers between the ages of 18 and 35 say texting is their top distraction

while on the road, according to the Hankook Tire 2012 Fall Gauge Index. Other distractions include talking on the phone, talking to other passengers and eating while driving. Whether driving to a New Year’s party, heading back to school after winter break, or road tripping with a group of friends on a ski trip, it’s important to keep your eyes on the road so you can reach your destination safely. Check your tire tread to prepare for snow: Worn tread is the No. 1 cause of skidding during the winter season, so it is important to make sure your tires are up to the task before hitting the road. A quick way to do this is to check your tires’ tread depth indicators. Tread depth indicators are small raised bars that run in-between a tire’s tread grooves. When a tire’s tread is worn down to these indicator bars, it’s time to change to a new set of tires. Check your tire pressure: Every 10-degree drop in air temperature can actually cause a vehicle’s tires to lose up to 2 pounds per square inch (psi) in tire pressure. Improper tire pressure can result in increased tread wear and lowered performance, factors that are highly detrimental to one’s safety in undesirable weather driving conditions. Be prepared and stock up: Getting stuck on the road is also a major concern during the winter season. Before heading out, check to make sure your engine coolant, no-freeze windshield washer fluid and your gas tank is topped off. Also make sure there are no blockages or obstructions to your heating or window defroster vents. Be sure to pack extra water, a spare tire, ice scraper, snow shovel and brush, blanket, booster cables and a flashlight in your car for emergencies. With proper preparation you can keep your slipping and sliding confined to the ice rink and make winter pit stops in front of the fireplace instead of in the breakdown lane.

February 20, 2013 While I have personally reached the ripe old age of antique with all of the provable modern appliances and changes, false teeth, hearing aids, spectacles, white hair and shortage of memory. I still enjoy reading old newspapers, pictures and booklets printed before my time. This week I received a special surprise from a local history buff and collector, Hal Stauring brought in a booklet titled “Canajoharie and the World War” published for the 1st World War homecoming celebration dated July 4, 1919. Over 350 names were listed as served in the U.S. military from Canajoharie, NY. I have often wondered why some are chosen to give the ultimate sacrifice. The following can still play a sad tune on our heartstrings. The first page in the booklet is in memory of those special persons. The Silent Sound: Here inscribed are the names of the boys who have gone, never to return. Who knows but they may be looking down upon us as we are gathered together here today to pay deference to their comrades and to do homage to their memory. They fought the good fight, they kept the faith, may they repose in everlasting peace until that day when Gabriel shall sound the last reveille and they shall arise in a glorious resurrection. King, Bernard Mosher, Raymond O’Brien, Dennis Pross, Gustav Pettit, William Roberts, Theron Rocklin, Elijah Sanderson, William Smith, Raymond Smith, Orville Van Dusen, Edwin Those who served in World War I: Allen, Byron Albrecht, Christopher Ambrosio, Alex Anspach, Lloyd Anthony, Homer Arkell, W. Clark Aldi, A. P. Arriens, Augustus Allen, DeWitt Atkinson, Mahlon Atkinson, Lawrence Berger, Louis Bell, Joseph Bierman, George Beard, Harry Brooks, Milton Bogart, Francis Bond, Duane Bracebridge, James Bradt, Guy Brisben, Lester Brownell, Gilbert Bundy, Leland Bartlett, Gardinier Baker, Philip Bullock, Howard Bullock, Duplang Brown, Kenneth Carmen, Leroy Cashin, Joseph Cervo, James Chamberlain, Ernest Chamberlain, Newell Chest, Michael Colburn, Charles Cohen, Theodore Comforti, Dominic Conboy, Charles Conrad, Arthur Conrad, John Conrad, Howard Conrad, Orson

On the same date July 1919 a local (St. Johnsville) merchant ran the following advertisement in the St. Johnsville Weekly “The Enterprise” Radways Pills Cures Dyspepsia Cure for all disorders of the stomach, liver, bowels, kidneys, bladder, nervous diseases, loss of appetite, headache, constipation, continence, indigestion, biliousness, fever, inflammation of the bowels, piles and all derangement of the internal viscera and perfect digestion will be accomplished. Special note to my friend the vet and his farmer friends “Do you think it would or will cure Hollows Horn”? In the January 3, 1901 issue of the St. Johnsville Enterprise R.B. Beckman’s Firm placed the following ad: At Beckman’s – On sale 5000 Heavy Fleece lined union Suits, regular 75¢ goods our price only 19¢ per suit size 5 to 15 years or older. 1,000 Ladies jersey ribbed fleece lined winter weight vests and pants. Regular 25¢ and 35¢ Garments only 15¢ each. Mens Extra Heavy Fleeced Wrappers and Drawers; Regular 75¢ Garments, at just half price 37 1/2¢ each garment. Come early to secure bargains. (Note the price thirty seven and one half cents) Who said the old time weekly newspapers covered only local news such as: Aunt Martha Hendricks was the Sunday dinner guest at the Tom McCarthy home. They enjoyed roast beef, mashed potatoes, peas with gravy and all the fixens. Dessert was apple pie with cheddar cheese. The following National news was headlined in the St. Johnsville Enterprise 112 years ago:

January 3, 1901 Haver Hill, Mass. Mayor John C. Chase, the 1st socialist Mayor ever elected in this country has completed his official career. His last order increased the Salaries of Assessors from $400 to $600. He accepted a place as a Traveling Shoe Salesman. Isn’t it strange to note that a socialist politician would push or cause to happen such a large pay increase for Government workers? As we have mentioned in “Hello Again” bigger Government with its higher cost and socialism seems to go hand in hand. Is it possible that you and your spouse are going to miss out on money which the government actually owes, and possibly to you? The answer is absolutely yes. Some people fail to file and receive a huge tax credit called the earned income tax credit, worth up to $5,981 for the 2012 tax year. That’s up to nearly six thousand big bucks — you must file property taxes to receive it. If your household earned less than $51,000, you may be eligible. Head for a good tax attorney or tax service and ask if you are eligible for the earned income tax credit. This is not Irish blarney — don’t jip yourself. You may already be eligible for up to $5,891 but it is up to you to file properly. Be a good neighbor. Don’t kick your dog. Kiss your spouse and talk your thanks and problems over with the Lord. Weekend home improvement projects that add value and curb appeal (BPT) — Weekend warriors rule as 2013 is proving to be the year that the do-it-yourself trend reaches full momentum. If you have a weekend to spare, you have plenty of time to make some home improvements that add value and curb appeal. The key is to choose projects that have a big impact, but only take a few days to complete. The first step in preparing for any home improvement project is ensuring you have all the right tools and supplies. If you need project-specific tools, it may make sense to rent them rather than buy, depending on how many times you plan to use them.

Next, head to a home improvement store for supplies. Consider these projects that can be done in one weekend — each will add impressive curb appeal while enhancing your home’s overall value: 1. Garage door upgrade One of the largest focal points of a house’s exterior is the garage door, yet it’s often overlooked when it comes time to consider home improvements. An old garage door with dings, scratches and dents can be an eyesore that dates a home. A new garage door can give your house’s facade a stylish facelift, revamping the home’s look instantly. Modern options are convenient to install and operate, and are sure to impress neighbors, guests and potential buyers, if you are selling. Plus, according the 2013 Cost vs. Value report from Remodeling magazine, replacing a garage door has a 75 percent return on investment, meaning you’re sure to add value to your real estate investment. 2. Create a grand welcome Many people use their garage entranceway as the main way to enter their home, so it’s easy to forget about the experience of entering through the front door. That’s why it’s important to take a moment to walk to your home through the main entrance, like a guest or potential buyer would. Is the experience warm and welcoming, or drab and dated? If the entrance path to your home is less than stellar, a few upgrades will improve it tremendously. Trim overgrown shrubs, add new mulch, paint wood stairs or railways and consider replacing your entry door — a new steel entry door has an impressive 85 percent return on investment.

Reseal the driveway A cracked, faded driveway can make your property look older than it really is. If you have an asphalt driveway, it’s easy to refresh it without a complete replacement or upgrade to concrete. Sealing, while messy, is achievable for even modest DIYers, helping to extend the life of your driveway while adding an attractive cohesive black appearance. Visit your local home improvement store for all necessary supplies. Remember to fill cracks and holes before brushing the sealer over the surface of the driveway. Keep in mind that older driveways that have not been resurfaced may require two coats. These projects have a big impact and can be completed in one weekend or less, making them perfect for today’s DIY homeowner. But no matter what home improvement project you decide to take on, make sure you start with a plan and get the appropriate supplies so you can manage your time and budget efficiently.

rooms in your house. When you’re ready to get started on your home’s new look, let these trends of the year be your design guide. In the kitchen Kitchens need to be functional, but in this hub of the home style is just as important. Upholding practicality while adding visual interest is a top trend this season. Two-toned upper and lower cabinet colors are rapidly growing in popularity as a way to let homeowners customize their kitchen spaces and express their personalities. • Maple is the style frontrunner when it comes to wooden cabinets, but painted cabinets in white, black and gray tones are also on the rise. Whether you opt to replace your cabinet fronts or paint them, your efforts will give you impressive — and fast — results. • On the functionality front, innovative handsfree faucets simplify cooking and cleaning tasks while requiring

minimal effort to install. • Open shelving is seeing a boost in popularity. Both glass-fronted cabinets and simple open shelves capture this trend, allowing you to put your style on display while creating a sleek, updated look. In the bath A luxurious-feeling bath doesn’t need to make big demands on your wallet. By making a few on-trend updates, you’ll give your room designer appeal guaranteed to make an impression. • Updating the vanity, often the focal point in a bathroom, provides immediate results. • Tiling provides the perfect solution to add extra personality to your bath. Right now, trends offer two different but equally chic directions — large-scale tile and small-scale mosaics. Tiles with wood-like appearances are also gaining popularity; they create a warm, inviting look, but offer the wetspace practicality of tile. Throughout the home

When it comes to loweffort, big-impact changes, it’s hard to beat a fresh coat of paint. For walls that feel drab, boring or outdated, new paint makes a color statement and draws attention to architectural details. Follow these paint tips to make an instant, dramatic impression: • Alter the dimensions of a space by painting ceilings a slightly lighter color than the walls. • Create patterns and shapes using painter’s tape. Stripes, chevrons and ombre effects are perfectly on-trend. • Highlight architectural details by painting interior doors and trim in a colorful hue instead of traditional white. In one weekend or less, these simple changes will make your home feel like an entirely new space. So when the seasonal urge to renovate sets in, don’t resist — reinvigorate your home with these ideas. Find more decorating trends and inspiration at Lowes.com.

Dining Folts honors CNA class graduates A graduation ceremony for the Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) who successfully completed the program sponsored by Folts Home in Herkimer was held on Feb. 1. The ceremony took place in the chapel at Folts Home with Peggy Cool, RN, CNA instructor/trainer, as facilitator of the program. The invocation and benediction were offered by Deacon Dr. Richard Brown. Welcoming and congratulatory remarks to the students and their families were made by Administrator Fred Scerbo. The graduates were addressed by Sherry Nagle, RN, Folts Director of Nursing, who noted that being a CNA brings them to a whole new level of helping people, not only by giving care to the residents, but also by noticing and sharing changes in the residents that will help the nurses, medical staff and resident families. Nagle commented, “You will learn new things every day, how to comfort the lonely and afraid, how to draw out the shy or the depressed, and sometimes how to share an unexpected

laugh. You will hear stories about people’s lives that will surprise you and sometimes humble you.” Diplomas were presented to the following CNA class graduates: Victoria Austin, Kristy Baumes, Carol Gay, Catherine Gerena, Svetlana Huhko, Shirley Kuru, Elizabeth Maloney and Jennifer Smith. In his reflections, Folts Home Medical Director Dr. Richard Brown expressed to the graduates the significance of knowing love and serving God in life, and recognizing the opportunities surrounding them to do that. He emphasized the importance of being observant, even in the little things they will do during their journey of providing care, which will result in a better quality of life for both the resi-

dents and themselves. Following the ceremony and the presentation of their diplomas, graduates joined staff and family members for refreshments. Students in the Certified Nursing Assistants program learn how to perform basic nursing skills for the elderly. They also learn how to care for residents with dementia, infection control practices, resident rights, safety and dignity. Along with the academic knowledge, they experience “hands-on” clinical training with the residents where they practice their newly learned skills. For additional information on the CNA course offered at Folts Home, contact the Folts Human Resources Department at 866-6964, ext. 280.

The most common mistakes homeowners make when choosing a home improvement contractor and how to avoid them (BPT) — Consumer complaints and lawsuits regarding home improvements are on the rise according to Ripoff Reports; a homeowner that does not do their homework before embarking on a project could find themselves with poor workmanship, inferior products, health and safety issues or even legal problems. So what’s a homeowner in need of a fix up to do? “Start by reviewing the three most common mistakes people make when embarking on a home improvement project,” says Dave Harrison, chief marketing officer of Champion Windows,

Sunrooms, Roofing and Home Exteriors (www. GetChampion.com). Mistake number one: Buying Only on Price Your home is probably one of the most expensive items you own, so making improvements is not the place to budget shop. “Make sure you are getting quality products professionally installed. A properly done home improvement should only have to be done once,” added Harrison, “and remember the old adage ‘you get what you pay for’.” Mistake number two: Not looking at the Long Term Investment Benefits When your home im-

provement project is finally over, you should be getting more than an upgrade to your home; you should also see an increase in your home’s value. When you do it right you can reduce energy and maintenance costs and increase comfort and pride in your home, and never have to worry about it again for as long as you own your home. On the flip side a poorly executed project can lower the value of your home, have to be re-done in several years and even put your family’s health at risk. For example, water damage from faulty windows could cause mold.

Mistake number three: Not Knowing How to Screen a Contractor “I’ve seen many independently owned contractors close their businesses after a short year or two,” said Harrison. “When selecting a contractor to work with it is important to get a sense of who they are, what products they use and how long they have been in business.” According to Harrison there are four essential questions to ask during this screening process: • Who designs it? • Who builds it? • Who installs it? • Who guarantees it? “When you don’t get the correct answers to

these four questions you may end up with an inferior investment, expensive surprises, property damage or even lawsuits and liabilities,” says Harrison. “Ultimately, the answer you want is that there is a single source of accountability for your project. Having one company design, build, install and guarantee the product and work, as Champion does, can save you time, money and hassles in the long run.” Make sure you have a contractor relationship you can trust for the long-term. This longterm relationship starts with a quality product and professional instal-

lation and includes a lifetime warranty from a company that has longevity and provides you with a sense that they will still be in business five or ten years down the road. You should also ensure that your warranty is transferable, applies to all systems, applications and materials, and is non-prorated. A nonprorated warranty is considered to be the most valuable as it means that the manufacturer or seller will replace or repair the item at no cost to the buyer if there is a problem with a product.

This is a hammer by Samantha Mazzotta Permanently silence a squeaky floor Q: The floor squeaks loudly when I walk over a couple of spots in my living room. I read somewhere that you can stop these squeaks by sprinkling talcum powder between the boards. But my floor is covered by carpet. Is there any other way to fix the squeaks? — Squeaking Mad in Memphis A: Talcum powder is a good temporary fix for squeaky floorboards (as noted in my new book, “101 Best Home Repair Tips,” available from Amazon). But eventually the squeaks come back anyway. If you’re not inclined to pull back the carpet repeated-

ly to apply powder between the boards, try a more permanent solution. Do you have access to the underside of the living room floor, such as in the basement or the crawlspace under the house? If so, you either shim the nearest joist or secure the subflooring to the squeaky boards to reduce the noise. To shim the floor, have a helper walk around the living room while you listen below for squeaks, and mark the noisy areas. Next, mark the joists (the large boards running perpendicular to the floorboards underneath the floor) on either side of the squeaky area. Coat a shim (a thin wedge of wood, available at most home-improvement stores) with a thin layer of wood glue, and hammer the shim into the gap between the joist and the subfloor on each side of the squeak. You may need to add a couple of shims on each side, and have your helper test the area each time. If that doesn’t completely rid your floor of squeaks, try attaching the subfloor to the floorboards in the squeaky area more tightly. You do this by driving wood screws through the subfloor layer into the bottom of the floorboards. Be careful to select screws that will not punch through the floorboards. Place the screws into the center of the squeaky area — two should do it, but if you need three or more, go ahead. What if you can’t access the underside of the floor? This is where you’ll need to roll back the carpet and address the boards from above.

To avoid marring the floorboards, hammer finishing nails between the squeaking boards, angling them so that they go into one edge of one of the boards. The nails should be flush with the floorboards. Space them a few inches apart along the squeaky area. If that doesn’t do it, you can secure the floorboard to the subflooring from above. This will mar the board, as you’ll need to drive a finishing nail (or if necessary, a wood screw) directly through the center of the squeaky floorboard into the subflooring. Use a nail set or another nail to drive the finishing nail slightly below the wood’s surface. Then cover it with wood filler whose color matches the color of the floorboard. HOME TIP: Talcum or graphite powder are just temporary fixes for squeaky floors. Apply either one between the offending boards and brush away excess. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

by Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Teenagers often make acne worse Dear Dr. Donohue: I am 17 years old. I have pimples all over my face. The only thing that helped was an antibiotic, but it made me sensitive to sunlight. My parents don’t want me to continue to use an antibiotic. Can you help? — G.G. Answer: Let’s start with a couple of mistakes made by most people with acne. Don’t

scrub your face or any place where acne has broken out. Scrubbing causes irritation and worsens acne. Use a mild soap like Dove when washing. Don’t squeeze pimples, whiteheads or blackheads. You force bacteria into adjacent skin. Acne develops because of clogged pores through which hairs grow and through which sebaceous (oil) glands empty their oil onto the skin.

The first signs of trouble are whiteheads or blackheads. They indicate that the pore is plugged. Deep in the pore, down from the blockage, the oil glands continue to secrete oil and greatly distend the pore, which can rupture. Bacteria thrive on the oil. At this point, a pimple is born. Acne control involves unplugging the pore, eliminating the bacteria and putting the brakes on oil production. The oil pro-

duction is in high gear because of the increase of male hormones at this time in life. Benzoyl peroxide unplugs pores. Brand names include Clearasil and AcneClear, both available without prescription, as are many other brands. From this point on, effective medicines require a prescription. The first choice is retinoids — Renova cream and Retin-A. They’re often

used on alternating days with benzoyl peroxide. The next step up is antibiotics. In creams and lotions, they aren’t absorbed very much. Clindamycin and erythromycin are two such products. If no progress comes from skin-applied antibiotics, then oral antibiotics are the next step. Tetracycline, doxycycline and minocycline are examples. Your parents should reconsider their ban on their use.

Even if they sensitize you to sunlight, simply stay out of sunlight when using them. They worked for you. I haven’t listed all acne medicines. Bad acne, like yours, calls for treatment by the family doctor or a dermatologist. (c) 2013 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

through your regional public library. Robert D’Archille is a serious collector who also might be helpful. His address is 3972 NY Route 26, Whitney Point, NY 13862. Q: I have been searching for several older telephones that were manufactured between 1925 and 1935. I’m at a dead end and hope you can help me. — Bill, Oak Park, IL A: Richard March is owner of the Chicago Old

Telephone Company, and he sells older, restored telephones to the public. His address is 1446 Tramway, Sanford, NC 27332. For parts, I recommend Phoneco, Inc. 19813 E. Mill Road, P.O. Box 70, Galesville, WI 54630. Q: I am restoring two older dressers from the early 1900s. I would like to find hardware appropriate to the period. Any suggestions? — Rob, Metarie, LA

A: Van Dyke’s Restorers has an impressive inventory, including such hard-to-find items as dresser pulls, cabinet hardware and even Victorian doorbells and light brackets. The address is P.O. 52, Louisiana, MO 63353. Q: I recently purchased some glassware from a neighbor, including some stunning pieces of Stueben, Lalique and Boehm. I got the items at such a rea-

sonable price that I wonder if I should simply hold on to them until economic conditions improve. — Betty, Waco, Texas A: You might begin by purchasing some of the better price guides. I especially like the Warman guides published by Krause, since they are easy to use and I think accurately reflect marketplace values. You also should find a dealer you trust for advice.

Q: I have an Underwood typewriter from 1930 and need a cotton ribbon for it. — Sam, Sun City, AZ A: TTS Business Products has cotton ribbons for older machines made by Royal, Underwood and Remington. Contact it at 325 Nassau Blvd., Garden City South, NY 11530, and typebar@aol.com. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Collecting by Larry Cox Railroad China Q: I have several pieces of china made for the New York Central Lines in Syracuse. Who can I contact about current values? — Patricia, Fowlerville, MI A: Douglas McIntyre is the author of “The Official Guide to Railroad Dining Car China,” one of the better reference books in this field. Since it is an expensive book, try to request a copy

Auto repair: wondering about your warranty? It’s a common misconception that only car dealers can perform the routine maintenance and repairs on a newer vehicle that is under warranty. In fact, it is law that consumers can patronize their neighborhood repair shop or do the work themselves without violating the manufacturer’s warranty, says the Car Care Council. Consumers are protected by the MagnusonMoss Warranty Act, enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which prohibits a manufacturer from voiding the vehicle warranty because service was done by a non-dealer. According to the FTC, “It’s illegal for a dealer to deny your warranty coverage simply because you had routine maintenance or repairs per-

formed by someone else. Routine maintenance often includes oil changes, tire rotations, belt replacement, fluid checks and flushes, new brake pads and inspections.” “Many motorists wonder if they will void their factory warranty if someone other than the dealer services their vehicle,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “The truth is that consumers can have routine repairs performed by their local independent repair shop or do the work themselves without affecting the warranty. It is also important to note that using aftermarket parts does not void the warranty.”

Senior news line by Matilda Charles Avoiding the flu Not only has the flu arrived early this season, but it appears to moving quickly. Seniors are at risk of becoming extremely ill from the flu, so it’s up to us to do everything we can to avoid catching it. We say this to little kids all the time: “Keep your hands away from your face.” But it’s true. Granted, the flu is respiratory and is generally spread through someone sneezing or coughing near us, but flu germs

can live on surfaces. If transferred to our hands and then our face, we can catch the flu. An important point: People who have the flu can give it to you a whole day before they even know they’re getting sick. Some hints to avoid the flu: • Carry hand wipes when you shop. If the store doesn’t have any near the carts, use yours to wipe down the handle and seat before you touch it. • Use alcohol-based

T he e e Shop Tire

wipes on your phone and doorknobs at home, just in case. • Stock up on hand sanitizer and keep a small bottle with you when you go out. • Stay out of stores after school hours when small children might be with their parents. If you haven’t had a flu shot for some reason, call your doctor and ask if you should have one. Age alone, if you’re over 65, can put you in a high-risk category, and so can any medical condition you might have. If you do get the flu, ask your doctor about a prescription for an antiviral drug. The drugs work best if started within two days of getting sick. They can make the symptoms a little easier to handle, and they can prevent complications like pneumonia. Plans for St. Patrick’s School 20th annual Basket Bonanza fundraiser are well underway. We would like to thank all the businesses and individuals whose generous donations make this event possible. Basket Bonanza has flourished over the years into an anticipated event. We have wonderful supporters who attend each year for this event of winning fun.

This year our grand prize is a Ferris IS500z 52” deck riding lawn mower from White’s Farm Supply! Mark your calendars and join us on Saturday, March 23 to continue this worthwhile tradition. Tickets for the event and raffles will be made available mid February. To make a donation or inquire about the event call St. Patrick’s School at 315-363-3620.

Senior news line by Matilda Charles Appealing a denied Medicare claim Every quarter you’ll receive a Medicare statement. It’s important that you inspect this form — going over every item — and look for mistakes. Kaiser Health News has issued a report showing how to handle any mistakes you find: If a claim is denied, you’ll want to take steps to appeal. Hold on to your quarterly statement and circle the items in question. If you have a computer, go to the Medicare site (www.medicare.gov) and click on Claims & Appeals. You’ll get a list of instructions. Down the page at Get Medicare Forms, you’ll find the forms you need for either a claim or an appeal. You also can file a claim online at the above link. If your claim is denied, be sure to appeal within 120 days. If you’re denied again, file again, asking for a second appeal. If denied, for your next appeal include a letter describing what the payment was for. Include a copy of the previous denials of your claim. Your next appeal will be to ask for a hearing before an administrative law judge. This likely will be a conference call between you, your doctor and the judge. Only 2 percent of errors are ever challenged when it comes to denied claims. Those who are denied a claim often give up. It takes energy and perseverance to have the corrections made, but it’s to your benefit, even if it takes a second or third try. It’s on the third try that you’ll have the most success, so don’t give up if you know you’re right. For free help in filing appeals, contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIPS) office. Find them by calling your local county office on aging. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Happily ever after with your car If you want to add more years to the relationship between you and your car, give it a little extra attention in the form of an oil change, tune-up or other loving service to make sure it runs happily ever after. Just a little extra care can lead to a longer life for your car, says the Car Care Council. “There’s no debating the value of preventive maintenance to keep your car running efficiently. By giving your vehicle a little more attention now, you’ll avoid the heartbreak and unexpected expense of car

trouble down the road,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. The Car Care Council recommends you treat your car to regular care this month and beyond. • Schedule a tune-up annually to optimize your car’s performance. A well-tuned engine delivers the best balance of power and fuel economy and produces the lowest level of emissions. • Change the oil and filter per the owner’s manual. Periodic oil and filter changes keep your

engine clean on the inside. • Check the tire pressure monthly, including the spare. Your car’s tires affect its ride, handling, traction and safety. • Have the alignment checked annually. Potholes and other road conditions, as well as normal wear, can take their toll on your car’s steering and suspension. A wheel alignment reduces tire wear, improves fuel economy and handling, and increases driving enjoyment and

safety. • Inspect the windshield wipers and lights on the car. Lights and wipers play a major role in safe driving, and they are normal wear items that need periodic replacement. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a copy of the council’s Car Care Guide or for more information, visit www.carcare.org.
