Hello Again, Just plain listening while enjoying a little bit of living can offer some interesting humor. This morning while enjoying a breakfast of pancakes and eggs at a diner, a man sitting behind us said, “Like my father said before he died.” I never met him or his father but I am certain if he said it — he said it before he died. On the other hand if he was saying it while they were burying him, that was a dirty trick. Just think if we could sit around that old chunk stove at Charlie Hearn’s store and chat about some of our favorite truisms, one-liners, or memorable skits, it would be — a barrel of laughs — . Let’s try to remember a few. How about an oldie, “A stitch in time saves nine,” or the one-liner by Bart Maverick on T.V., “As my old pappy always said, ‘Working is a fine way to kill time but a shaky way to make a living’.” The one that fits me, “My gumption got up and left.” I’ll never forget the skit with Carol Burnett and Harvey as an old couple. Rocking in their chairs on the front porch, with a twinkle in his eye, Harvey tapped Carol on the knee and said, “Let’s go upstairs and…” She quipped, “Let’s see if you can make the stairs first.” My wife recalled a few her grandmother said “before she died.” One of her favorites was, “Pretty is as pretty does,” or when Sylvia and her sister Connie spilled something on their clothes, “Don’t worry, it will never show on a trotting horse.” When sending them off to school in the morning she would say, “If you act half as good as you look, you’ll be ok.” Who doesn’t remember, “Pink sky at night, sailor’s delight. Pink sky at morning, sailor’s take warning?” While I was a youngster, our country church had a pastor who’s claim to fame or truism could not have been “loaded with ambition.” One Sunday morning, as part of his sermon he said, “Before leaving the parsonage for church this morning, I started to put on my neck tie and realized I was still wearing my pajama top.” With that, one of the older lady parishioners said in a loud enough voice to be heard, “And then he woke up.” A little fellow was instructed by his Sunday School teacher

to recite the part in the Lord’s Prayer that he did not understand. He said, “Our Father in Heaven, how do you know my name?” A traveling salesman had a tire blowout in front of a state mental institution about six miles before the next village. While taking the spare tire out of the trunk and jacking up the car, he noticed a man leaning against a wood fence on the institution lawn. He waved and said “Hello.” Taking off the wheel with the damaged tire, he placed all of the nuts in the hubcap, which he placed too far out in the road. A truck drove by hitting the hubcap and sending the nuts out into a field. After realizing that he could not find the nuts, he locked his car and started walking towards the village. With that the man asked him, “What’s wrong?” So the salesman explained about the lost nuts and he would have to go into the village to buy replacements. The man stopped leaning on the fence, pointing at the other wheels. Why don’t you take one nut off of each of the other three wheels, mount them, and drive slow into the village?” “That’s absolutely brilliant. Do you work at the hospital?” “No,” he said. “I’m a patient here.” The salesman, quite surprised, asked “Isn’t this a mental institution?” The patient answered, “Yes — we are here because we are crazy — not because we are stupid.” I take great pride that our little Original Valley Pennysaver is able to carry the following announcement to our upstate residents: The church family of Grand View Baptist Church of Washington Street, Fort Plain, during their annual family business meeting called Dan West to serve as their full-time senior pastor. Pastor and Mrs. West are lifetime Roseboom/CherryValley/Sharon Springs area.

Seating your wedding guests Weddings are filled with many emotions: happiness, excitement and anticipation, to name a few. With all of the positive emotions a wedding may drum up, in the mix there may be a few negative ones, including feelings of being overwhelmed at all the details that need to be completed on a deadline. One aspect of wedding planning that tends to send people into panic is wedding reception seating arrangements. The thought of having 200 friends and family members together under one roof — and then attempting to seat them next to an acceptable group of people — can cause some couples to hyperventilate. Here are some guidelines for setting up reception seating arrangements. • Place yourselves, as well as the bridal party, at a separate table that is in a prime location in the room. Be sure to allow the spouses or dates of bridal party members at the same table so couples remain together. • Some couples choose to seat both sets of parents at one table together — the parents’ table. Grandparents may also be seated at this table, depending on the number of people
each table can accommodate. • If children under the age of 7 are invited, they should be seated with their parents. Children between ages 7 and 14 can be seated at a separate kids’ table. • Be mindful of guests with disabilities or mobility issues. Seat them close to the door, bathrooms or food station. • Instead of separating the bride and the groom’s family to separate sides, intermingle the tables to promote conversation. • Consider arranging guests by common interests at each table, seating business associates or parents’ friends together. • Take into consideration people who have relationship rifts and try to seat them separately. But don’t stress about this too much because it won’t be possible to accommodate everyone. You’ll have to hope that at your wedding a certain level of decorum will preside. • It’s not unheard of to let guests seat themselves. This takes the pressure of finding a seat for everyone off of you as a couple and enables you to think about the other tasks at hand. This can take place at a buffet wedding or a smaller affair.
Tips for trying on wedding gowns Many brides-to-be look forward to the day when they visit a bridal salon and are able to try on gowns for the first time. There are certain tips that can make the day go much more smoothly and potentially reduce the amount of time it may take to find the perfect gown. • Wear a supportive, well constructed strapless bra or corset in your correct size. If you will be wearing a petticoat, also have the right size available. • Go without face makeup when trying on gowns so they remain clean. • Try to wear your
hair similar to the style you have in mind for your wedding. • Note that the size of the wedding gown you will wear is typically one to two sizes larger than your day-to-day clothes. Proper measurements can be matched to designers’ size charts. • It’s best to limit the number of people with whom you shop to 1 or 2 trusted friends or family members. An entourage can be confusing. • It’s always better to order a slightly larger gown and leave room for alterations if you are between sizes.

Collecting by Larry Cox Pez dispenser Q: I have a Pez dispenser of Walt Disney’s “Goofy.” I purchased it during the 1970s and now would like to sell it — if the price is right. — Bill, Palm Coast, FL A: Your Pez dispenser came in two designs, one with ears that moved, the other with the ears fixed. The swinging ears model generally sells for about $30, the other $15 to $20. Q: I have a set of

dishes, service for six, acquired during the 1950s. Each piece was available in boxes of Duz soap powder. They are identified as being the “Golden Wheat” pattern, and each is trimmed in 22k gold. Are they worth anything with the gold trim? — Donna, Lyons, NY A: The gold trim contains such a small amount of the precious metal that it doesn’t add much to the value. Dishes were popular premiums throughout the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s and often were found in the containers of oats, cereals and other popular kitchen products. “Dish Nights” at movie theaters also were popular. Between features, lucky ticket holders won dishes and other prizes. Q: My family owned and operated a service station in New Mexico during the 1940s. While clearing out a storage locker recently, I found a small collection of gas-station memorabilia, including vintage oil cans, road maps and several interesting old signs. How can I determine if they are worth keeping? — Carl, Rio Rancho, NM A: One of the better references is “Warman’s Gas Station Collectibles: Identification and Price Guides” by Mark F. Moran (Krause, $24.99). Moran’s guide features more than 1,800 illustrations in full-color of gas-station cans, bottles, signs, pumps, globes and other related items, in addition to current retail prices. This is a fun book that should be helpful. Q: I have a metal ricer and press that was used by my mother during the 1930s. It still has the wooden piece that was used to process or liquefy solid foods, and the original stand. What is it worth? — Betty, Sun City, AZ A: Your press with stand and wooden wedging element is valued in the $15 to $20 range. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Tracking down older recordings Q: My dad played in several big bands as a sideman throughout the 1930s. He appeared on numerous recordings, and he is missing at least a dozen cuts he is certain he did. Needless to say, I am scrambling to track down the original 78-rpm issues. Can you help me? — Steve, Binghamton, NY A: Tracking down older recordings can sometimes be difficult. It is becoming hard to find 78s even in thrift shop. Part of this is because most people have discarded the turntables on which to play older recordings.
One of the better vintage music stores is Richard Gesner’s The Music Connection, 1711 South Willow St., Manchester, NH 03103. This is one of New England’s largest music stores and is a full-service business. For example, the inventory includes steel Victrola needles, paper sleeves for 16-, 33-, 45- and 78-rpm recordings, cylinders, cassettes, compact discs and even 8-track tapes. It also maintains a customer want list. Another source that might be helpful is Record Finder, P.O. Box 23060, Glen Allen, VA 23060. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

TAX GUIDE IRS kicks off 2012 tax season with deadline extended to April 17 WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Internal Revenue Service on Jan 4 opened the 2012 tax filing season by announcing that taxpayers have until April 17 to file their tax returns. The IRS encourages taxpayers to e-file as it is the best way to ensure accurate tax returns and get faster refunds. The IRS also announced a number of improvements to help make this tax season easy for taxpayers. This includes new navigation features and helpful information on IRS.gov and a new pilot to allow taxpayers to use interactive video to get help with tax issues. “At the IRS, we’re working hard to make the process of filing your taxes as quick and easy as possible,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman.
“Providing quality service is one of our top priorities. It not only reduces the burden on taxpayers, but also helps in filing an accurate return right from the start.” Taxpayers will have until Tuesday, April 17, to file their 2011 tax returns and pay any tax due because April 15 falls on a Sunday, and Emancipation Day, a holiday observed in the District of Columbia, falls this year on Monday, April 16. According to federal law, District of Columbia holidays impact tax deadlines in the same way that federal holidays do; therefore, all taxpayers will have two extra days to file this year. Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until Oct. 15 to file their 2012 tax returns. The IRS expects to receive more than 144

million individual tax returns this year, with most of those being filed by the April 17 deadline. The IRS will begin accepting e-file and Free File returns on Jan. 17, 2012. Additional details about efile and Free File will be announced later this month. IRS Free File provides options for free brand-name tax software or online
fillable forms plus free electronic filing. Everyone can use Free File to prepare a federal tax return. Taxpayers who make $57,000 or less can choose from approximately 20 commercial software providers. There’s no income limit for Free File Fillable Forms, the electronic version of IRS paper forms, which also includes free e-filing.

Energy conservation tips With cold weather upon us, now is the time to take action on energy efficiency measures that will save you money, keep you warm and reduce your energy use according to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). Here are some simple low-cost and nocost energy saving tips from NYSERDA. You might even consider putting some of the energy conservation items mentioned below on your holiday “wish list” or consider giving them as gifts. • Keep the warm air in and the cold air out by adding insulation,
caulking and weatherstripping around doors, attic access, windows and outlets. • Use a programmable thermostat with your heating system to lower the temperature automatically when on one is home or at night. You can save nearly $200 a year without sacrificing any comfort. • Take advantage of natural solar heating — it’s free! Keep blinds and drapes of sun-exposed windows open in the daytime to let heat into your home. To reduce your energy bills by as much as 40 percent, try Home Performance with ENERGY STAR.

Ringing in the New Year with community awareness at St. John’s - St. Mark’s by Elizabeth A. Tomlin St. John’sSt. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Canajoharie is already known for reaching out to the community by sponsoring Red Cross blood drives, donating locally to the Fulmont Center, sponsoring health fairs and hosting coffee houses to raise funds for causes like world hunger and local disasters. So it’s not surprising that they are ringing in 2012 with more community programs. Beginning on Jan. 9, Wii Walk fitness classes were added to the list of community programs offered at the church fellowship hall. Parish Nurse Barbara Kramer runs the fitness program. “It promotes health and well-being,” Kramer said, “especially during the winter months when you can’t go outside and exercise.” Kramer explained the importance of exercise for maintaining good circulation, and mentions that the class is also a good form of social interaction, “getting people to come out and join in the fun of the class and getting the benefits of exercise at the same time.” The classes are free and last about an hour. All ages are welcome to participate. Kramer, who also offers a blood pressure clinic at the church twice per month, is a Healing Touch practitioner. “Healing
Women of St. John's - St. Mark's Lutheran Church prepare soup jars for fundraising and to donate to shut-ins and other members of the community who are in need. Touch,” she explains, “is an energy therapy in which practitioners consciously use their hands in a heart-centered, intentional way to enhance, support and facilitate the physical, emotional, metal and spiritual health and self healing.” Call Kramer at 518-6733499 for an appointment for a Healing Touch session. On Jan. 29, the well-known and loved band, Stone Soup, will
appear at St. John’s St. Mark’s for a coffeehouse benefiting the Schoharie Valley flood victims. The band will play from 3-5 p.m. and refreshments will be available. This coffeehouse is one of three that will be held to benefit the flood victims. Stone Soup band member Dr. Pete Liljeberg is the youth leader at St. John’s St. Mark’s, and Missionary Team
leader. The missionary team will be leaving for a trip to Guatemala in February and donations are greatly appreciated and will be accepted at St. John’s - St. Mark’s. The next Red Cross Blood Drive will be held in February. Call 518-673-2224 for information on the Wii Fitness class or any of the other community activities at St. John’s - St. Mark’s.

Automotive Did you know? Airbags were invented in the early 1950s by John W. Hetrick, an industrial engineer and member of the U.S. Navy. Nowadays, airbags have become an instrumental part of a vehicle’s safety system, offering extra protection in crashes. Each year, thousands of lives are saved thanks in part to airbags.
However, airbags are not without some measure of danger. It is estimated that airbags deploy at between 100 to 300 mph and in mere milliseconds. The force of the airbag can cause injuries to the face and head. But such injuries pale in comparison to those the airbags protect drivers and passengers against.

(ARA) — The relaxed pace of summer allows the perfect opportunity for home improvement updates. You can make your favorite room stand out with some simple ideas that take less than a day to complete from start to finish. “Home interior experts know small decor tricks that take very little time can have a big effect,” says Elizabeth Sasso Smith from Liberty Hardware. “Homeowners can use these same strategies to make changes easily and quickly inside their own home.” Wall plates Perhaps one of the most overlooked ways to quickly and dramatically update a room is to replace the wall plates. Wall plates are the covers that go over the light switches and outlets. Most people default to boring, white plastic that can make a room look generic and cheap. Decorative wall plates can complement any design scheme, and because they can be removed, are a great option for those who rent or others who might want to change them out from time to time with minimal effort. Hardware Cabinet hardware changes are typically made in the kitchen or bath, but knobs and pulls have multiple uses if you think outside the box. “Consider coordinating the color and theme of your new wall plates into a clever curtain tieback using a knob or pull,” says Christina Hurley of Liberty Hardware. “A similar finish will add a design flow

that creates character and pizzazz throughout the room.” Some other ideas for coordinating knobs include use on a wall or door to hold a coat, towel or bag. You might even decide to hang pictures using coordinating knobs and metals. Instead of simply nailing the frame to the wall, tie with a beautiful ribbon and hang on a knob that matches your wall plates and other hardware in the room. Hooks and hook rails Other eye-catching additions to a room include hooks and hook rails. While they may have once been deemed for industrial or heavyduty use, new contemporary and traditional designs along with complementary finishes like satin nickel and hazelnut allow hook rails to take a more prominent, decorative position in a room. Installation is simple and quick, allowing for a modern appeal and instant coordination with wall plates and other hardware. Find a new place for items that often get tossed on the floor like book bags, belts or purses. A small hook rail placed in a closet or bathroom is perfect for hanging jewelry for easy access or spice up your garage with a decorative hook rail to hold sports equipment or umbrellas. Remember, it doesn’t take a lot of time or money to transform your interior space. With just a few easy updates like wall plates or hook rails you’ll be amazed at how different and beautiful your room will look.

Donna’s Day: creative family fun
by Donna Erickson Make a family of readers in 2012 When I go to a friend’s house, I’m always scouting out the bookshelves or poking through piles of reading material on the coffee table or kitchen counter. It’s not that I’m that nosy, but I’ve discovered that I get to know my friends a little better when I see what they enjoy reading. What makes for a good book, newspaper or magazine, anyway? Each can be the promise of adventure, another point of view, a giggle, an alternative way of thinking. I especially love books that grab both myself and the child I’m reading with. If you popped by my house right now, you would find the striking, newly released “Puff, the Magic Dragon Pop-Up Book” (Sterling Children’s Books) on my end table.
Paper engineer Bruce Foster animates the timeless lyrics page by page with amazing creativity. And when I joyfully share it with a child, I play the accompanying CD sung by Peter Yarrow of the familiar song I’ve known since childhood as we turn the pages and travel with Jackie Paper and Puff to the land of Honalee. Surely reading good books can enrich us all, no matter our age. But the extra benefits to kids go beyond the printed page. Watch children with a new book as they turn pages with anticipation and scan for things that surprise and intrigue them. Diane Lemke, an elementary principal and curriculum director, believes that reading is the river that runs throughout education and, ultimately, life. “The innately tactile na-
ture of children is rewarded by practice interacting with covers and pages, eye-catching colors, pictures and letters in all shapes and sizes,” she says. “Books are like packages with interesting contents of patterns and sounds. When positive adult touch is paired with book time, a message is translated about the specialness of written words.” As you turn the calendar to 2012, and you feel from time to time you aren’t offering your children or grandkids enough food for thought or possibilities for learning, crack open a book together. Discover how books can unlock a world of thinking and learning in an enriched year of family reading and storytelling. (c) 2012 Donna Erickson Distributed by King Features Synd.

IRS offers top 10 tax-time tips The income tax filing season has begun and important tax documents should be arriving in your mailbox. Even though your return is not due until April, you can make tax time easier on yourself with an early start. Here are the Internal Revenue Service’s top 10 tips to ensure a smooth taxfiling process. 1. Gather your records Round up any documents you’ll need when filing
your taxes: receipts, canceled checks and other documents that support income or deductions you’re claiming on your return. 2. Be on the lookout W2s and 1099s will be coming soon; you’ll need these to file your tax return. 3. Have a question? Use the Interactive Tax Assistant available on the IRS website to find answers to your tax ques-
tions about credits, deductions, general filing questions and more. 4. Use Free File Let Free File do the hard work for you with brandname tax software or online fillable forms. It’s available exclusively at www.irs.gov. Everyone can find an option to prepare their tax return and e-file it for free. If you made $57,000 or less, you qualify to use free tax software offered through
by Matilda Charles Avoiding hospital readmissions Question: What’s worse than being admitted to the hospital? Answer: Being readmitted quickly after being released. Far too often, just when we’re out of the hospital, something happens and we’re right back where we started. It’s expensive, and those who study these things have looked at the reasons for frequent hospital readmissions. Here are some of the statistics from the Center for Studying Health
System Change: • About 8 percent of adults go back into the hospital within a month, and one-third within a year. • One-third of us don’t see a doctor, nurse or anyone else within a month of being released from the hospital. After 90 days, 17 percent of us still haven’t seen a doctor. It doesn’t matter what kind of insurance we have. Researchers say new ways must be found to bridge the gap between the doctors and hospi-
tals. At this point, even where there are programs and coordinators to manage the discharge process, it hasn’t changed the rate of readmissions. Here’s a suggestion to keep from being readmitted: When you leave the hospital, make a nurse write down your prescriptions and instructions for aftercare. The minute you get home, call your doctor. Make the earliest appointment possible, and take your instructions. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

We all make mistakes when we rush. Mistakes slow down the processing of your return. This is a Hammer by Samantha Mazzotta Why drain a hot-water heater? Q: A neighbor of mine said that he drains his hot water heater twice a year to keep it clear. Won’t draining the heater damage it? — Sal P., Tallahassee, FL A: Actually, draining the water heater can help it heat water more efficiently and even extend its service life. The trick is to turn it off and let the water cool for a few hours. Then, shut off the water supply to the heater so it won’t refill as you drain it. Note: If you need to turn off the water supply to the entire house or part of the house in order to turn off the heater’s supply, open the taps on the other sinks in your house. Attach a length of garden hose to the waterheater drain spigot, just long enough to comfortably hang over the edge of the bucket you’ll use to catch the drained water. (If a utility sink is
nearby, that’s an even better option; run the hose to the sink.) Turn the spigot on slowly, until it’s fully open. Drain the tank as far as possible — this could mean detaching the hose and catching the last of the water in a bucket. Then, close the spigot and turn the water supply back on to fill the tank, and turn on the heater. If you had to turn on the other taps in the house, once the water supply is back on, turn the taps off. (You want water to run through them after a shutoff to prevent air from getting trapped in the pipes.) Draining the water heater once or twice a year will remove sediment that can build up due to a number of factors. It’s not always done in the wintertime, but if you have a day or two that is above freezing and you can let the heater cool overnight, go for it. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.
