Hello Again, Maybe this salutation should be “Hi up there!” and not “Hello again,” as we are down in sunny Florida. So to ease my conscience, “Hi up there!” Talking by phone with my three-wheeled motorcycle buddy, George, he said the temperature at his home was six degrees below zero. Now that’s cold. It is 10:52 Tuesday morning here in West Palm Beach, Florida. The temperature is 79 degrees. The sky is a beautiful soft blue with big fluffy white clouds. The grass is green and the flowers are in full bloom. If you had a choice, where would you rather be-in sunny Florida, or in frigid upper New York State? Now-hold on-before you think I have flipped my lid. If I had to choose between living year round in upper New York State or Florida, our home in upstate New York would win hands down. Florida is great for a winter holiday but upper New York State is proof the good Lord was creating his greatest masterpiece. A few nights ago we attended a music concert, offered as a tribute in memory of the Beatles. I heard comments such as “It was wonderful”, “It was great”, “I could have listened all night”, etc. If I was tempted to write a review of that concert or to sum it up in one word I would not have any trouble. The word is “loud.” I am sure it was their intention to totally destroy two hours of my remaining life. If it was their intention to cause bodily torture without actually touching anyone, they accomplished their sinister deed. While at the Beatle Tribute, I purchased a split hot dog with meat sauce, which cost

Original Valley PENNYSAVER • January 21, 2012

Page 7

$3.75 and a Diet Cola for $2.50. I overheard the server say, “They sure aren’t spending very much tonight.” I thought at those prices we were spending too much. While eating my hot dog, and I love hot dogs, I suddenly realized that I might have stumbled on a get rich scheme for our dairy farmers back home. That hot dog with meat sauce probably weighed about four ounces or four hot dogs per pound. The average dairy cow weighs about 1,400 pounds and when dressed out about 1,000 pounds. Can you see where this line is heading? 1,000 pounds of dairy cow meat made into hot dogs at four dogs a pound, selling at $3.75 each would bring about $15,000 per cow. Grocery store sized hot dogs would cash out at about $30,000. Maybe I should go home and sell the publishing business and try to corner the hot dog market. I could toss in the mustard and sauerkraut free of charge. Now for a little knee slapping. “Son, when that naughty boy threw stones at you, why didn’t you come and tell me instead of throwing them back at him?” His mother asked. “What good would that do mom?” He snorted. “You can’t hit the side of a barn”. My wife was reading my fortune card from the weight scales at a carnival, she said “it says your dynamic, a leader of men and admired by women for your good looks and strength of character” she added, “it got your weight wrong too”. Remember to say hi to your neighbors and welcome strangers. Don’t stay a stranger to the Lord. Tonight before going to sleep, talk to him he will listen. Attending church on Sunday is the best way to start off a new week. Fred and Sylvia Lee and the Lee Family

Retiring After 20 Years of Service... What a Journey! To all of the voters of St. Johnsville, I would like to thank you for putting your trust in me to do the best of my ability for so many years. The safety of this town has always been very important to me and I truly appreciate this community. I send out a special thanks to Lynn Stever for her continued support. To my crew, Robbie Battisti, Willie Putman and Maynard Baker, I never could have done this job without them. Thank you to all of the other superintendents in the area for your advice and words of wisdom. You are appreciated. I would like to thank Hungry Bear for my surprise retirement party, to all of my friends who gave me cards, and for all of the gifts I have received. Your thoughtfulness means so much to me. I must send out a special word of thanks to my family that always supports me and to my wife Jane. She has gone the extra mile, taking care of the town bills and doing the tough job of keeping me on my toes. In twenty years of service, I have had the great pleasure and honor of serving so many people. Again, I thank you all. Best wishes to the new Superintendent of Highways, Jeff Doxtater.

Sincerely and Respectfully Yours, Peter D. Battisti

The integrated care provided here also gives me the opportunity to experience other aspects of rehab including occupational, massage and lymphedema therapies. I am grateful for the opportunity to further my education and clinical experience so close to home with such an incredible team of professionals and diverse array of residents.” Alyssa is a native of Little Falls, NY, and upon receiving her Doctorate, Alyssa would like to work with children in need of physical therapy.

Ames Volunteer Fire Dept. celebrates 41 years of Pancake Breakfasts by Elizabeth A. Tomlin It takes a large crew to feed breakfast to 1,000 people, and Ames Volunteer Fire Dept. (VFD) Chief Alan Dean credits “volunteers from all over” in making the fund-raiser, ‘all you can eat’ Pancake Breakfast a success year after year. Larry Bartholomew, retired from the fire department, was selling tickets for the breakfast. He reported on the many times when people filled the entire room and overflowed out the door as they waited for the ‘all you can eat’ pancake breakfast. “Once in a while we even have a couple of airplanes fly in and land out here in the field,” Bartholomew said. “They used to fly up from Cooperstown.” Other folks, like Phillip Kline and wife, Sherry, of Amsterdam, NY, would ride up early in the morning on their snowmobiles along with many

other snowmobilers. Although this year there wasn’t much snow to accommodate snowmobilers, people arrived by the car-full to enjoy the food, fun Ames Fire Dept. volunteers (from left) Larry Bartholomew, Melanie Delong and Evan and fellowship. Automotive Extend brake life by: • Getting regular brake maintenance • Not riding your brakes • Not slamming on your brakes • Removing brake dust and mud from your wheels with regular car washes

• Making sure brake fluid is at the proper level. It’s a good idea to have your auto repair facility check your brakes every time you change your oil or according to the schedule in your owner’s manual.

Signs that you may need brake service: • Your stopping distance is increasing, causing a longer braking distance • You have to push the brake pedal unusually far to engage the brakes • Your vehicle has a tendency to move right or left when the brakes are applied

• The steering wheel shakes in your hands as you come to a stop. (This could mean your rotors are damaged, or “warped,” and need attention.) When your brakes or rotors need replacing, use quality, tested products designed for your vehicle.

have been aged to look old. One of the better references is the “Official Guide to Mechanical Banks” by Dan Morphy, published by House of Collectibles. Q: I have an older fishing reel in its original box. It has a beautiful design. How I can determine its value? — George, Albuquerque, NM A: Many collectors have become hooked on fishing collectibles. The original interest was generated by old lures and some reels and rods. It later expanded to include advertising memorabilia and miscellaneous items. Recent prices include a 1931 catalog from the Shakespeare company, $150; a Heddon Lure, No. 100, $350; a Mitchell reel, model No. 70, $65; and a rare 1931 limited edition of “The Compleat Angler” by Arthur Rackham and Izaak Walton, $3,000. One of the better references is “Fishing Collectibles: Rods, Reels, Creels” by Russell E. Lewis (Krause, $29.99). Q: I have a 1929 Majestic console radio in walnut. Although it has a few scratches, the radio works and it is original. I paid $450 for it at an antique shop several years ago, and wonder if it’s worth more than I paid. — Ken, Providence, RI A: Your radio currently is valued in the $150 to $200 range. Majestic radios are fairly common and not as desirable with collectors as many of the more popular brands, such as Philco and Zenith. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

If you decide antiques should be part of your investment plan, learn as much as you can about the market for the field you’ve chosen. It depends. Art and antiques are extremely vulnerable to fluctuations in public tastes and other factors, so they are considered high-risk, speculative investments. Most authorities agree that you should buy art and antiques primarily because you like them and only secondarily because they may return a profit. Avoid putting more than 10 to 15 percent of the value of your investment portfolio into art and antiques. Investment-quality art and antiques are expensive and usually not an option for the

Donna’s Day: creative family fun by Donna Erickson Fun games to keep minds sharp in 2012 I resolve to build a better brain in 2012. If you’re like me, the “think tank” can always use a little exercise, and it’s easier and definitely more fun to keep a resolution when you share the challenge with friends and family. That’s where games come in. Here are a couple of fun brain games to put smiles on faces and help everyone in the family keep their mind sharp. Take Two! When you don’t have time for a standard Scrabble board game, try this speedy version that uses the letter tiles without the board. My daughter taught it to us years ago, and our family is still hooked! Here’s how: Turn all the Scrabble tiles upside down in the center of the table. Each player takes seven tiles, turns them over and quickly creates words in his own crossword arrangement in front of

for writing, depending on ages of your kids. When time is up, read off your answers, and the longest list wins. For another round, try other storage areas, such as a tackle box, sewing basket or

him. Each word must connect with another, as it would on a Scrabble board. As soon as one of the players has used all seven tiles to form his words, he shouts, “Take 2.” Each player now draws two more tiles and attempts to work them into their arrangements. Continue this fast-paced play with each player drawing two tiles when someone shouts, “2.” As the game progresses, players may rearrange their words as they work in the new letters. When all tiles are gone from the center, the game proceeds until one player has used up all of his letters. Count individual scores by adding up the points printed on each of the letters for all words formed. Deduct points for tiles not used. Highest score wins. I-Spy Memory Game Pull out your kitchen junk drawer, gather family members around and say, “Ready, Set, Go!” Quietly study the contents for 20 seconds. Hide the drawer, and ask everyone to write a list of items they saw. Designate an amount of time

Snow removal and other January gardening tips by Charlie Nardozzi, Horticulturist and Leonard Perry, UVM Extension Horticulturist Removing snow properly to avoid plant damage, watching for fungus gnats on indoor plants, and checking stored root crops are some of the gardening activities for this month. When you are clearing your driveway with a snow blower this winter, direct the snow away from plants. Otherwise, the blowing ice crystals may damage the tender bark of young trees and shrubs. This isn’t as much of a concern for plants wrapped with burlap. When deicing walks, use one of the granular products with a “chloride” other than sodium — these are safer on plants. They may cost a bit more, but you can often use less. Calcium chloride works best in the coldest areas (down to about 5 degrees F). If below this temperature, don’t use any chemical product but rather sand for traction. Liquid products don’t track into buildings as granular ones often do. Apply any material before ice and snow, if possible, for best results. Potatoes, onions, carrots, turnips, and other

root crops that you have stored in your basement or root cellar should be checked regularly for signs of decay. Any vegetables that show any rotting should be removed and any good parts eaten (if possible) immediately so they don’t spread the disease to other vegetables. If you’ve stored tender summer bulbs, check them too periodically. Gladiolus corms are usually pretty easy to store as long as they don’t freeze. Dahlia tubers, on the other hand, can die if they get too dry or stay too wet. If they are stored in a medium such as sawdust, com-

post, or similar, and it feels damp and tubers are getting mushy, replace them at once into a drier mix and cut off rotten portions. If they are starting to shrivel, add a bit (not too much) moisture to the storage medium. Check the calendar to see if your forced bulbs have received their recommended amount of cold treatment (12 to 16 weeks). If so, move them into a 50-degree (F) spot out of direct sun until the flower shoots are about 2 inches tall, then move the pots to a sunny 68 degree location. The warmer the temperature, the shorter the flowering

stems will be and the faster the bulbs will flower and fade. If you’ve noticed tiny black flies that look like fruit flies around your indoor plants, they are probably fungus gnats. Though annoying when they flit about, the 1/8inch-long adult insects are harmless. Their tiny, worm-like larvae feed on organic matter in moist soil, which can include plant roots. To control them, allow the soil to dry out between watering, use sticky traps, or drench soil with a biological control available at stores and labeled for this insect. When you’re finished

with holiday evergreen boughs, use them to mulch tender perennials and shrubs. They make a lightweight but insulating layer that helps protect plants from alternating temperatures like our typical January thaw followed by a deep freeze. Other gardening ideas

for this month include looking through print and online seed and plant catalogs, visiting a botanic garden online, keeping your birds fed and water in heated birdbaths changed every few days, and admiring your winter landscape with snowshoes.
