Hello Again, No golf today, it’s been raining a real Florida-type downpour all day. A perfect day to catch up on writing and phoning family and friends. I just finished a 20 minute phone conversation with my sister-in-law in Ireland. Her husband, my oldest brother, Bert, completed his lifetime walk a few years ago, leaving many fond memories. Often, while laughing he would say “Ireland would be the greatest little country in the world if they would put a roof on it.” It seems Ireland does receive more than its fair share of rainy days. Its famous for its day-long soft rain and mild weather. The cold weather temperature seldom drops below 32 degrees or in the summer raises above 80 degrees. A New York State master gardener could only dream about such near perfect growing conditions. I believe few countries worldwide can match Ireland’s gorgeous, flowers especially roses. Rhododendrums adorned with huge flowers and greenery grow wild along the country roads. When it comes to describing the beautiful greenery and flowers in Ireland, even an Irish storyteller, blessed with an extra drop of blarney, can not do it justice. It seems that every week I learn more interesting tidbits about our Upstate New York and the part the Mohawk Valley has played in the history of our country and worldwide. For example, did you know Mark Twain was the first writer to submit a typed manuscript to a publisher? He submitted “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” to Chotto and Windus in England in 1876, It was typed on a Mohawk Valley, Ilion, NY Remington Typewriter. For well over 150 years our neighbor Ilion, as home of Remington, has played a very

important part in worldwide industry and here in our valley a major employer. The Remington line of firearms is treasured by marksmen, hunters and sportsmen. Remington is still a major gun manufacturer and area employer. One of my first guns used for hunting small game and deer was a Remington automatic 12-gauge shot gun. My son had it re-built and it still looks like brand new. I’m sort of a history buff. I enjoy reading old newspapers especially old local newspapers. It’s amazing what you learn. I recently received a copy of the Dolgeville Republican dated March 3, 1933. It stated in the year 1810 the citizens of Salisbury held their first official village or town meeting. During that meeting it was agreed to pay a bounty for killing wolves. In addition to the wolf bounty they established a fine or penalty for allowing cattle or sheep to run at large. Proudly displayed under the publications’ name was a slogan “Beautiful Dolgeville — Always busy”. Two farmers were talking at the drug store. “What makes you think Sam’s so stupid?” Joe asked. “Well,” Art explained, “There’s a poster down at the Post Office that says, “Man wanted for Robbery in Montreal” and Sam packed his bag and applied for the job!” Before his daughter’s date, the father asked, “Elizabeth, does this boyfriend of yours have any money?” “You men are all alike,” Elizabeth replied, “That’s what he asked about you.” May the good Lord Bless and Keep you. The question might be if you don’t even care to know him — why should he?

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, In light of the recent article published about the “Just One More” ministry I felt it necessary to give some insight regarding the journey that two of your local churches are about to embark on. I use the word journey because here at the Union Church of Spearman we have learned this ministry is more than giving food, clothing or toys to those in need. St. John’s Church of Freysbush and St. Paul’s Church of Fort Plain have recently chosen to carry out this ministry by taking their two churches and working as one. Already, the very heartbeat of this ministry is working among them. As they begin to meet the needs that are many within their community they will learn there is a deeper purpose in what they are doing. They will meet the outcast single mother, thankful for what she receives, yet thankful still that someone saw past her flaws and showed compassion to her and her children. Through their act of love, they will encounter the elderly living alone, waiting for a visitor hoping to tell a tale of “the good ole days” allowing them to reminisce and be young, for even a moment. Interwoven in the examples that Jesus gave as he spoke of the father of the prodigal, the lost coin, or the lost sheep, you will hear over and over again; the heart of God is for “one more”. “One more” is not a catch

phrase or a program to be adopted; it is a commitment to lifestyle ministry. Consider the last moments of Jesus’ life as He hung upon the cross. In that desperate moment, His life pouring from His many wounds, His spirit bearing the weight of all humanity; His eyes were ever searching for one more. Though His hands and feet were fastened, and the crown He bore was made of thorns, a common thief was saved upon meeting an uncommon savior. Lastly, the focus of “one more” is both purposeful and perpetual. Whether it’s one more child, one more marriage, one more meal, one more family, one more salvation, or one more prayer, this must be the mindset of the church as we refuse to accept status-quo or mediocrity. “One more” embodies the whole mission of the church. St. John’s Church of Freysbush together with St. Paul’s Church of Fort Plain have now become One More to walk a road that was once less traveled, and less traveled it will be no more. Sincerely, Christina SotoDettmer Union Church of Spearman Spearman, Texas Opinions of the letters printed are not necessarily those of the staff or management at Original Valley Pennysaver. Good Housekeeping Chocolate Pudding For a Valentine’s treat, we tweaked this chocolate classic from our 1927 cookbook. Now with a double dose of antioxidant-packed bittersweet chocolate and cocoa, it will satisfy any sweet tooth. 1/2 cup sugar 2 cups whole milk 4 ounces bittersweet chocolate 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa 3 tablespoons cornstarch 1 teaspoon vanilla extract S w e e t e n e d whipped cream and chocolate shavings (optional) 1. In 3-quart saucepan, with wire whisk, combine sugar and 1 1/2 cups milk; heat on medium-high until bubbles form around edge of pan. Remove from heat and add chocolate. Let stand 1 minute, then whisk until chocolate

melts. 2. Meanwhile, in medium bowl, whisk cocoa, cornstarch and remaining 1/2 cup milk until smooth. Whisk in eggs until blended. Whisking constantly, add 1/2 cup hot chocolate mixture in slow stream. 3. Heat chocolate mixture remaining in pan on medium-low. Whisking constantly, gradually add egg mixture to pan. Cook, whisking constantly, 10 minutes or until mixture becomes very thick and begins to bubble. Whisk in vanilla. Divide among 6 small serving cups. 4. Refrigerate until cold, 4 hours or up to 2 days. Top with whipped cream and shaved chocolate. A decadent Valentine’s Day dessert It seems that even the most steadfast dieters make room for a little dessert come Valentine’s Day. What better than a trifle that’s both impressive to the tastebuds and the eyes this holiday? “Chocolate Cherry Cheesecake Trifle,” courtesy of “A Decade of Cooking the Costco Way” (Toppan Lefung Printing), edited by Tim Talevich, pairs chocolate and cherries together with rich cream cheese, making a decadent dessert many will enjoy. Chocolate Cherry Cheesecake Trifle Serves 6 to 8 Cake 1 cup egg whites Pinch of salt 1 teaspoon salt 11/4 cups sugar 1 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup flour 1/3 cup pitted and finely chopped fresh sweet cherries, divided Cheesecake Filling 16 ounces cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup half-andhalf 1/4 cup pureed fresh sweet cherries 1 1/2 cups finely chopped fresh sweet cherries

1 1/2 cups shaved chocolate 1 cup prepared whipped cream Preheat oven to 325°F. To prepare the cake, with an electric mixer, beat egg whites with salt and cream of tartar until they begin to foam. Add sugar and beat until stiff peaks form. Mix in vanilla. Carefully fold in flour. Pour half of the batter into an ungreased 9-inch tube pan and top with half of the chopped cherries. Pour in the remaining batter and sprinkle on the remaining cherries. Bake for 50 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool before removing from the pan. To prepare the filling, blend cream cheese and sugar with an electric mixer until smooth. Add half-and-half and pureed cherries. To assemble, cut the cake into 1-inch cubes. In a trifle dish, place an even layer of cake cubes and cheesecake filling. Sprinkle with chopped cherries and shaved chocolate. Repeat layers until the trifle dish is full, finishing with whipped cream and the remaining cherries and chocolate on top.

Now Here’s a Tip by JoAnn Derson • Here’s a great conversation piece: Get a big, shallow bowl or box, fill it with loose snapshots (preferably of holidays past) and set it on your coffee table. People can’t resist photos. • “I’ve loved this little trick since I saw it used at a party years ago. I serve iced tea (or punch) at most of my get-togethers, and instead of ice cubes, I freeze several pounds of cleaned, de-stemmed white grapes. They are a hit at every party.” — M.A. in New York • Need almostinstant party snacks? Try a package of store-bought cheese tortellini.

Cook according to package instructions (usually only a few minutes), toss with oil or salad dressing and stick each on a toothpick. • “A great way to make guests comfortable is to print out a copy of the channel lineup for your cable service provider. You also can print out common remote-control buttons or any remote-control or TV instructions for playing a DVD, etc. This helps us older folks enjoy a few hours of TV time while the younger kids are out at work or school.” — H.P. in Nebraska (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

The language of friendship is not words but meanings. -Henry David Thoreau

Whatchamacallits The controlled use of fire, which began 300,000 to 400,000 years ago, was among the earliest of human discoveries. Flash forward to 1826 and the invention of the first friction match by English chemist John Walker began the modern era of “instant” fire. However, for the preceding 3,000 years, from about 1200 B.C. until the match was perfected in the mid-19th Century, the preferred method of starting a fire was by striking a piece of flint on high-carbon steel. The artifacts pictured here, courtesy of Willis “Skip”

Barshied Jr. The flint was not essential to making this invention work — any hard, nonporous rock with a sharp edge would do. When the flint was

struck against the steel it created fine chips of steel that immediately ignited in the air and burned at about 2,300 to 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit.

These sparks were used to ignite a piece of char cloth, which was then used to ignite tinder — not exactly “instant” fire, but fire on demand nonetheless.

Paw’s Corner

by Sam Mazzotta Dear Paw’s Corner: This weekend I took my dog “Marty,” a dachshund-beagle mix, out to some property, where she sniffed and sniffed and dug and sniffed and sniffed. I think she had her nose buried in the rocky soil for so long that she gave herself a rather large (maybe the size of a nickel) blister on her upper lip. It’s not puffy — just a raw patch under her nose, and she licks at it. I saw something saying that canola oil or olive oil might help chapped lips, but this seems like a larger area. Any tips? — Matt P., via email Dear Matt: First, I have to caution that it’s always wise to

consult your dog’s vet. With that out of the way, I’d say the best thing to do would be to treat the raw patch like you would a blister or a raw patch on your own nose. Keep the area clean, rub a bit of Neosporin over it two or three times daily and watch it closely. Marty probably will lick off the antibiotic ointment within a minute or two of application, but in such small quantities it isn’t a problem to ingest. You also can ask your vet for topical medicine to reduce any discomfort and thereby reduce her licking of the area so it can heal faster. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

by Samantha Mazzotta Radiator woes Q: I’ve got an old hot-water heating system that pumps water from the boiler to the radiators around my house. I’ve noticed that some of the radiators heat only halfway: The bottom part heats, but the top part doesn’t. Any rea-

son for this? — Jerry in Randolph, MA A: Radiators that don’t heat up completely or that feel cooler toward the top may have air trapped in them, a problem that can be resolved pretty quickly by bleeding the air out. First turn off the thermostat (you don’t

want the system running while you do this) and let the system cool down for a few minutes. Then start with the radiator that’s closest to the boiler. Locate the air vent near the top of the radiator. Being careful to protect your hands from the hot water, open the air vent just one turn using a screwdriver or

a radiator key. You should hear air hissing out. As soon as water starts to appear at the vent, close it up. Move to the next affected radiator and repeat the process. If the problem returns after you bleed the radiators, contact a professional to check out the entire system. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Collecting by Larry Cox Cast-iron doorstop Q: I have a castiron doorstop that has been in my family for at least three generations. It is a rabbit dressed in top hat and tails. The item is in fairly good condition. — Beth, Amarillo, Texas A: Your doorstop was probably manufactured by National Foundry and is valued in the $75 to $150 range, according to “Kovels’ Antiques and Collectibles Price Guide” by Ralph and Terry Kovel (Black Dog & Leventhal books). Doorstops were especially popular during the late Victorian-era. Q: I have a Victorian-era Bible that was published in Glasgow, perhaps during the 1880s. It has a deluxe binding with metal latches

and thick back and front covers. Letters found in the Bible are from the 1890s. It is in excellent condition, and I would like to determine its value. — Judith, Placitas, NM A: I contacted several used and rare book dealers who told me that most highly decorative Victorian-era Bibles sell in the $75 to $150 range, depending on condition and content. By content, I mean personal family information recorded in its pages. A Bible from the Civil War period could be quite valuable if it has information pertaining to the war or was owned by a historically important family. William J. Q: I know that you have answered questions about Fiesta dishes, but I have an unusual product made by this company and

wonder if you can help me determine how much it might be worth. In my mother’s estate is a lamp with a syrup pitcher base and a post-metal bottom. It is in cobalt blue. — Cynthia, Buckeye, Ariz. A: I found your lamp referenced in “Warman’s Fiesta Ware: Identification and Price Guide” by Mark F. Moran (Krause, $24.99). According to Moran, your lamp with original shade is worth about $350. Collecting by Larry Cox Political posters Q: I have posters that are souvenirs from two political conventions, the 1988 Democratic Convention in Atlanta and the 1988 Republican Conven-tion in New Orleans. Each poster has a paragraph that states they were printed on recycled paper gathered from the convention floor. They are commemorative prints, and I wonder if they have any

value. — Virginia, New Port Richey, FL A: I spoke to several serious collectors of political memorabilia, and they seem to agree that your posters are worth about $20 each. A good general reference is “Warman’s Political Collectibles: Identification and Price Guide” by Dr. Enoch L. Nappen (Krause, $24.99). stamped “The Henry Bonnard Bronze Company, NY” and they depict what seem to be a war victory and a celestial scene. I’d like to contact someone who can give me information regarding their significance and estimated value. — Barry, via email A: Henry Bonnard and his factory produced important medal castings during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. For example, the foundry was commissioned to do decorative work at the Pennsylvania capitol. One of the most notable workers at the foundry was Frederic Remington, whose casts from the company are highly valuable and collectible. MIR Appraisal Services can help you determine a value for your bronze plates. You should expect to pay for this service. The contact information is 307 North Michigan

Ave., Suite 308, Chicago, IL 60601; appraisers@ MIRgallery.com; and 312-814-8510. Q: I have a working Webcor tape recorder with two large spools for rewinding the tape. Is there any value to this item? — Bill, Amherst, NH A: Without knowing the model number, it is a little difficult to give you an exact answer, but let me provide you with my best guess. I checked with several shops that specialize in vintage electronic equipment, and I found a Webcor that I think might be similar to the one you have — a 1952 Webcor twotrack, two-speed reel-to-reel model with four heads and tube amp. It is in working order and priced at $50, which I think accurately reflects the current market. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Caring for silver

How can I care for silver without damaging it? Objects made of silver or silver plate tarnish when silver metal reacts chemically with sulfur compounds in the air. Dirty and lightly tarnished silver can

be wiped with a silver cleaning cloth available from supermarkets or hardware stores. Heavily tarnished objects, with intricate decoration, should be cleaned using a thin paste of precipitated calcium carbonate

How can I repair a split drop finial and chipped molding from a Victorian parlor table? If you have the missing pieces, use hide glue to put them back in place. Furniture makers traditionally used this type of glue. It is strong, cleans up with water, and allows plenty of

time to set and adjust your clamps. Furniture conservators like hide glue because it makes taking apart old joints and misaligned repairs relatively easy. Before you readhere the finial or molding make sure you remove any old glue so that you get a strong bond. Hide glue

and alcohol, which you can make at home. Use only a small amount of precipitated calcium carbonate; do not use chalk or whiting, which are abrasive. Once cleaned, objects should be

wrapped in neutral pH tissue paper and stored in a sealed plastic freezer bag or a silver cloth bag available from a jewelry store. S o u r c e : www.cr.nps.gov/mu seum

will come off with water. When you glue pieces, make sure your clamps are padded to avoid marring the surface. Any “squeeze out” can be wiped off with a damp rag. After the glue sets, completely remove residue along the glue line by dissolving it in water. Flake hide glue,

which is generally preferred by conservators, is heated to get it into a liquid state. If you have any doubts about your ability to repair the break yourself without doing further damage to your prized antique, take it to a furniture conservator. Source: www.cr.nps.gov/mus eum

Real Estate Take this insulation tour for a real energy savings trip Take this insulation tour for a real energy savings trip (MS) — Did you know that one-third of all air leakage in a home can be attributed to walls, floors and ceilings? You might think your home is well insulated, but if it has conventional air permeable fiberglass or cellulose insulation, gaps, seams or damage could compromise its performance. Taking a tour of your home’s insulation may not sound like much fun, but it could be a sound investment in energy and money savings. Here’s a checklist for the four key stops to make on your tour, courtesy of the industry specialists at Icynene and at www.icynene.com: Stop #1 - The attic • Look out for sagging insulation batts or gaps. • Are there any signs of moisture or mold on the insulation?

• Make sure soffit vents are not covered by insulation to maintain airflow. Stop #2 - The basement • Check insulation around the rim joists (where your first floor meets the basement foundation walls) for gaps. • Seal any penetrations that go through the basement ceiling to the floor above, including those for electrical and plumbing service. • Look for signs of moisture or mold on the insulation. Stop #3 - The crawl space • Make sure the floor above a crawlspace is well insulated to keep heat from escaping into the crawlspace and to make your floors more comfortable. • Check to make sure insulation has a moisture barrier or consider Icynene’s closed cell spray foam insulation option that can provide

a built-in vapor barrier. • Check for signs of moisture or mold on the insulation. Stop #4 - The room over the garage • Is the room too cold in the winter and too warm in the summer? It might benefit from

spray foam insulation for complete air sealing and proper adhesion to the garage ceiling. • Look for sagging insulation batts and gaps. • Check for signs of moisture on the insulation.

Did you know? Approximately 110 million roses, mostly red, will be sold and delivered in three days surrounding Valen-tine’s Day. The reason red roses are so popular is because they were the favorite flowers of Juno, the Roman goddess of love. There are nearly 900

acres of greenhouse dedicated to the production of fresh-cut roses in the United States. One acre of greenhouse rose production in the United States is valued at about one million dollars. Although California grows 60 percent of the roses in the U.S., the majority of those bought for Valentine’s Day will have been shipped from South America.

Acoustic Coffee House attracts folks from far and wide

by Elizabeth A. Tomlin On the first Saturday evening of each month it is becoming a tradition for folks from as far away as Albany to travel to the Fonda-Fultonville Methodist Church to attend the ‘All Free Coffee House’ presented there, where musicians abound! It’s hard to determine whether it was Christine Pullen, sister-in-law of Pastor Nancy Pullen, or musician (and MC) Tom Staudle who first had the idea of utilizing the fellowship hall at the church to draw in the community in this unique way. Each credits the other with initiating this very successful event, which continues to grow monthly. Regardless of who thought of it, the concept has grown by leaps and bounds. The 20 plus musicians who gather to perform at the event present a mixture of all kinds of music and instrumental pieces. At the February event, musician Phil Minnich — well known for his vocals, bass and guitar — and his affiliation with Linda Lee and The Fox Creek Band, provided expert backing for other musicians. Cosby Gibson of Richfield Springs, known for her talent in composing and performing

original acoustic and contemporary folk songs, performed her newest melody, “Heart to Heart” at the event. “Every time I hear her sing, she sounds more and more like Judy Collins,” comm e n t e d Minnich. Automotive Steps to a “Greener” Car It doesn’t matter if the car you’re driving is new or old, big or small. There are preventive maintenance steps every vehicle owner can take to make sure their car is as “green” or environmentally friendly as possible, according to the Car Care Council. By following a few simple preventive maintenance steps, you can help protect the environment by

improving gas mileage, which in turn saves money at the pump. Keep your car properly tuned for optimum performance. Regular tuneups, maintenance and having clean air filters will help your car pollute less and burn less gas. Getting a tune-up can improve gas mileage by an average of 4 percent. Simply changing the car’s air

filter can improve efficiency by 10 percent. Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve gas mileage by as much as 40 percent. Drive Smart – If you have to drive your car, recognize that how you drive has a lot to do with fuel economy. Avoid sudden starts and stops and go the speed limit.

Jerky and aggressive driving decreases your miles per gallon (MPG) and increases wear and tear on your vehicle. Minimize unnecessary miles by combining errands in one trip. Lighten the Load – Get the junk out of the trunk and the stuff out of your car, with the exception of emergency items such as a spare tire, flares and a first-aid kit. Extra items weigh the vehicle down and cause an increase in gas usage. Regularly check and replace dirty air filters. An air filter that is clogged with dirt, dust and bugs chokes off the air and creates a “rich” mixture – too much gas being burned for the amount of air – that wastes gas and causes the engine to lose power. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve your car’s performance, but not miles per gallon. Have spark plugs checked and replaced if necessary. A vehicle can have four, six or eight spark plugs, which fire as many as three million times every 1,000 miles. This results in a lot of heat, electrical, and chemical erosion. A dirty spark plug also causes misfiring, which wastes fuel. Maintain the cooling system. A cooling system thermostat that causes the engine to run too cold will lower the fuel efficiency of a car by as much as one or two mpg. There also are improved radiator caps on the market today that allow the cooling system to operate at a higher temperature before boiling over, increasing the system’s efficiency and reducing emissions

Automotive What’s new in Green for Cars Used Oil Recycling Program http://www.calrecycle.ca.gov The Facts About Re-Refined Oil What is Re-Refined Oil? Re-refined oil is used motor oil that undergoes an extensive re-refining process to remove contaminants to produce a good-as-new base oil. This base oil is then sold to blenders who add additive packages to produce lubricants such as motor oil, transmission fluid, and grease. The main difference between re-refined and virgin oil products is that re-refined represents the responsible choice for the environment. Are Re-Refined Lubricants Safe to Use? Lubricants made from re-refined base stocks must undergo the same testing and meet the same standards as virgin lubricants in order to receive the certification of the American Petroleum Institute (API). Vehicle and engine manufacturers such as Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, and Detroit Diesel have issued warranty statements that allow the use of re-refined oil as long as it meets API standards. Many government and private fleets have used rerefined lubricants in their vehicles for years and report no difference in performance from virgin lubricants. Why Use ReRefined Oil? Re-refined oil is good for the environment and it’s priced competitively to regular motor oil. Also, do-it-yourself oil changers “close the recycling loop” with rerefined oil by turning in their old oil and purchasing motor oil that has been used,

re-refined, and put back on store shelves for reuse. Buying re-refined oil reduces our dependence on imported oil, reduces the depletion of natural resources, eliminates waste material, and helps create jobs. By using and promoting the use of re-refined lubricants, you accomplish the following: • Preserve a non-

renewable resource — oil. • Demonstrate your commitment to a cleaner environment through recycling and proper waste management. • Help protect the environment against pollution. • Re-Refined Oil by the Numbers • It takes one gallon of used oil to produce 2.5 quarts of re-

refined oil. If all used motor oil generated by the public was collected and re-refined, it would provide enough oil for more than 8 million cars each year. J The California Department ofy Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRe-y cycle) promotes closed loop recycling and the use of re-refined lubricants.

Automotive BBB advice for avoiding automobile repair scams When your vehicle needs repairs, you don’t need a crash course in auto mechanics, but you should know how to find a reliable shop and mechanic. Better Business Bureau recommends following a few key pointers to ensure that your automobile gets fixed without a glitch. BBB recommends considering the following advice when taking your car in for auto repair services: Check your warranty. If you have a problem with your vehicle while it is still under warranty, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, which may require that repairs be made at an authorized dealership. Ask around. If you are looking for a qualified, independent shop, ask

friends for recommendations, or request a list of BBB Accredited Businesses that do the type of auto repair you need. Be sure to check with BBB about the shop’s reliability at www.bbb.org/searc h. Look for shops that display certification. For major work, such as brakes, transmission or engine repair, you will need to find a shop employing a specialist. Ask all the questions that you need. Don’t be embarrassed to request explanations. Don’t rush the technician into making an on-the-spot diagnosis of the problem. Ask to be called and apprised of the problem, course of action, and cost of work before any work begins.

Full Time 2-10 Palatine Nursing Home is an Equal Opportunity Employer

On the hunt finding a job in a difficult job market Though the job market has gradually begun to recover, many people are still out of work. In June of 2011, the unemployment rate in the U.S. was still hovering around 9 percent nationally, while Statistics Canada reported that the Canadian unemployment rate was roughly 7.4 percent during that same period. Each of those figures illustrates that many North Americans are out of work. But the unemployment epidemic is not exclusive to the U.S. and Canada. Across the pond in England, for instance, the Office for National Statistics reports that nearly 2.5 million of the country’s residents were

out of work, a figure that translates to roughly 7.7 percent of the country. With such staggering unemployment figures, finding a job can seem like scaling Mt. Everest. But there are steps job seekers can take to ensure their job search is more smooth than stressful. • Decide what you’re looking for. Job seekers who begin a job just hoping to land a job are less likely to find a position they will love and stick with. While it’s understandable to accept a job offer in the current economic climate even if it isn’t a dream job, men and women who can afford to wait out their job search should exercise patience instead of

simply accepting the first offer to come along. Before beginning a search, determine exactly what you want to do. Avoid being vague and be as specific as possible when discussing your goals with friends or a professional headhunter. The more vague you are, the more likely you are to wade through thousands of listings, none of which might be what you’re truly looking for. The goal is to find legitimate leads you want to follow up on, not hundreds of leads that will waste your time. • Target specific companies. Just as your career goals should be specific, so should the companies you’re targeting. Job

seekers can make use of company Web sites to learn about particular companies within their targeted industry. If certain companies are more appealing than others, target those that appear to be the best fit. Once this background research has been completed, consult men and women within your professional network to see if they can offer any input into the companies that most appeal to you. This can help confirm or deny your first impression of the company, and might even yield a name you can contact to discuss potential job openings.

TAX GUIDE Dollars and Sense by David Uffington Get ready to file your 2011 tax return You’ll be receiving your W-2 and 1099 income forms in the next few weeks. Your 1099 for bank interest and 1098 for mortgage interest paid in 2011 should show up in the same time frame. When they arrive, check them immediately. Compare to interest reported on your bank statements and your yearto-date income and the deductions from your last paycheck of 2011. If you’re selfemployed, check the figures you’ve kept all year. If there are any discrepancies, report them immediately, before you file. The company issuing

the forms will be required to send amended forms to you and the IRS. Even before your forms arrive, you can use your same estimate figures from above to run what-if scenarios with tax software on your computer. If the numbers don’t match once the forms arrive, you’ll be able to make changes in the program. (Take that opportunity to investigate why your numbers don’t match.) If you’ve never used computer tax software, some of the fairly easy ones are TurboTax by Intuit, TaxCut by H&R Block and TaxACT. Beware any offbrand names that offer to let you do

your taxes online. They could be data collecting, and your Social Security number, name and address are valuable to thieves. Enter the data carefully, especially your Social Security number, amounts and employer ID. Save your file often. If you used a software program last year and are happy with it, purchase the same brand again. Let the two programs talk to each other. (When it asks if you want the program to import the data from the previous year, click yes.) Assuming you haven’t changed jobs or banks, much of the data, such as employer ID and company name, will transfer to your new

software. The earlier in the season you buy tax software, the more important it is to do the program updates. Tax changes can (theoretically) happen at any time. Every time you sit down to work on your taxes, ask the program to check for updates. Do the same thing with your state tax software. Most programs will let you do an efile of your tax return. Whether or not you chose this option, be sure to print out a copy (forms and all supporting documentation) of your tax return, including the state return. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.
