Hello Again, “In the beginning.” These three words written in the English language may have been read by more people than we could possibly imagine or believe. In the beginning — what, where, who. Our civilization has moved along, changing daily at such a fast rate that we almost cannot accept the line of thought that everything we can see, every person we know or remember, had a beginning. A study of history quickly reminds us that nearly everything also has an end which will make room for a new beginning. During our early education years, we learned about the early Pilgrims arriving on this continent to be met by Native Indian people. How they built log homes, grew crops, hunted wild game. Celebrated feast together and enjoyed their choice of freedom, of community government, and religion. Each in their own time passed into eternity only to be replaced by their offspring. Each a new beginning. This week we celebrate President’s Day. Remembering two of the great persons in our nation’s history: George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. A study of history reveals the greatness of these two men. Washington remembered as the first president of these United States. Henry Lee, Washington’s old cavalry commander, delivered the eulogy at Washington’s funeral in 1799 including words that everyone at that time understood and have been recorded and repeated for over 200 years. “First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his country.” Less we forget those great words were spoken during George Washington’s funeral service. At the end of Washington’s walk in this life, his path left an indelible imprint on this continent reaching across the oceans to all people in the world. His life ended, but his living dream for our country went on forming this greatest nation. We also remember his great military genius during the Revolutionary War. The great military general riding in uniform on his impressive white horse. At the conclusion of the Revolutionary War, he retired to live the life of a gentleman farmer only reluctantly to leave his well-earned retirement to preside over the Constitutional Convention. Once again, a new beginning to become the first president of the United States of America. Once again stepping down from the presidency in 1796. It has been said, he could have chosen to become king of this country. Now, it is obvious he understood it was God’s will that no one person should have such power or that any government should control power of

that dimension over the nation he fought and served for. We can thank George Washington for his part in setting up our nation and keeping us free of an allpowerful governing body. I wish we had space in this “Hello, Again” to chat about Abraham Lincoln. The man — the president who 60 years later kept Washington’s dream of a great nation glued together. Lincoln’s greatness preserved our nation as one nation of many states, not one huge central all-powerful government. We don’t want a huge federal government with a president acting as a king. Yet this is 2012. What lessons can we draw from these two great historical figures? Could it be — they were both given a challenge and dream? Washington’s dream to found and help build a great nation based on democracy with a representative form of government. Lincoln’s task and dream to keep this infant country glued together as one nation. Where did their dream, foresight, and strength come from? Remember the three words, “In the beginning.” Now add the fourth, “In the beginning, God…” Do we need to say more? If these two men could dream of a great nation and play a part in causing it to happen, is it too much to believe that we collectively can dream about the Palatine Corridor and make it happen? Dream, yes! Plan, yes! Act, yes! No one will deny the country folks from upstate New York area a fun-loving bunch of people who enjoy a good laugh. An old upstate farmer with his team of horses was hauling a wagonload of manure down a country road when he met an inmate from the local mental institution. “What are you going to do with all of that manure?” the inmate asked. The farmer replied, “I’m going to put it on my strawberries.” “And they call me crazy,” the inmate said, shaking his head. “I put sugar and cream on mine.” Well it’s time to bank up the stove, empty the spittoon, lock up the storefront and go home. So until next week, go with God. I know he will continue to bless you and your family. Say hi to your neighbor and say a few words of prayer. God will listen. You have that promise. From Florida, Fred Lee and the Lee Family

Montgomery County Farm Bureau commemorates Food Check-Out Week ~ Feb. 19-25 by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Cereals, soups, canned vegetables, canned fruits and juices are only a few of the assorted non-perishable items purchased by Montgomery County Farm Bureau’s Promotion and Education Committee members, Mary Finch and Kay Offenborn, for donation to a local food bank, commemorating Farm Bureau’s national Food CheckOut Week. Food Check-Out Week marks the time of year when, according to statistics from the Department of Agriculture, the average American will have earned enough income to pay for the entire year’s food supply. These statistics show that it takes only five weeks to accomplish this feat. County Farm Bureau chapters across the United States have been commemorating Food Check-Out Week for 14 years and more programs are implemented annually. This event also highlights the origins of the American food supplywith a focus on farmers. Montgomery County Farm Bureau’s Promotion and Education Committee emphasizes that New York farmers are committed to producing safe, abundant and healthy food and that they are helping consumers find solutions

to eating healthy on a straining budget. “This year we’re making a donation of non-perishable food to the local FulMont Food Bank in recognition of Food CheckOut Week,” said Finch. “But other years we’ve made donations to the Ronald McDonald House in Albany.” The Farm Bureau and Ronald McDonald House Charities connection was initiated when Food Check-Out Week first began and county and state Farm Bureaus still continue to make food donations to the Ronald McDonald Houses and other charities during Food Check-Out Week. “The Food Check-

Out Week connection between Farm Bureau and Ronald McDonald House Charities was forged more than a decade ago,” reports Sandra Prokop, Managing Director of NY Farm Bureau Foundation for A g r i c u l t u r a l Education, Inc. “Since the program was initiated in the mid-1990s, Farm Bureau members have donated approximately $3 million in food and monetary contributions to Ronald McDonald Houses and other worthwhile charities during Food CheckOut Week.” Ronald McDonald Houses provide a “home-away-fromhome” for families of

seriously ill children who are receiving medical treatment. Supporting food pantries is another important way that Food Check-Off Week is recognized, and Finch and Offenborn donated the many items they purchased to the Fort Plain FulMont Center and Food Bank, where employee Joanne Gunnison was on hand to receive the items. According to Cyndie Sirekis, Director of News Services with the American Farm Bureau Federation, “The third week of February was selected for Food Check-Out Week as a bridge to National Nutrition Month in March.”

Montgomery County Farm Bureau Promotion and Education committee members Mary Finch and Kay Offenborn choose non-perishable food items to donate to the local food band in commemoration of Farm Bureau’s National Food Check-Out Week. Photo by Elizabeth A. Tomlin

Whatchmacallits If there is a need to fill or a problem to be solved, rest assured, someone is bound to create a gadget that gets the job done. In the 18th and 19th centuries when seamstresses needed a “third hand” the “sewing bird” was invented. Also known as a sewing clamp, hemming clamp, or, you guessed it, a third hand, the sewing bird was used to attach one end of a piece of cloth firmly to a table. This enabled the seamstress to hold their sewing taut with one hand while stitching with the other. In America, the first

sewing birds were called “grippers.” Not used widely until mid-19th Century, they became popular as a luxury item, which a young man would present to his intended bride sever-

al months before the wedding. These were made in many varieties — birds with or without a pin cushion, on a spindle or not, and in the shape of numerous animals. After the invention

of the sewing machine, the need for grippers was diminished, but they were still manufactured as novelties. The sewing bird show here is from the collection of Willis “Skip” Barshied Jr.

Examples of items that may or may not be included in your taxable income are: • Life insurance If you surrender a life insurance policy for cash, you must include in income any proceeds that are more than the cost of the life insurance policy. Life insurance proceeds, which were paid to you because of

the insured person’s death, are generally not taxable unless the policy was turned over to you for a price. • Scholarship or fellowship grant If you are a candidate for a degree, you can exclude from income amounts you receive as a qualified scholarship or fellowship. Amounts used for room and board do not qualify for the exclusion. • Non-cash income Taxable income may be in a form other than cash. One example of this is bartering, which is an exchange of property or services. The fair market value of goods and services exchanged is fully taxable and must be included as income on

Form 1040 of both parties. All other items — including income such as wages, salaries, tips and unemployment compensation — are fully taxable and must be included in your income unless it is specifically excluded by law. These examples are not all-inclusive. For more information, see Publication 525, Taxable and Nontaxable Income, which can be obtained at the IRS.gov website or by calling the IRS at 800TAX-FORM (800-8293676). S o u r c e : www.IRS.gov

by Larry Cox Hurricane lamp Q: I have a hurricane lamp that is inscribed on the underside “L&LWMC 1973.” Can you please identify it and give me the name of a dealer who buys such lamps. — Lloyd, Surprise, AZ A: Your lamp was manufactured by Loevsky and Loevsky White Metal Castings, a company based in New Jersey that specialized in reproduction lamps and fixtures. It closed in about 1978. Your lamp was made in 1973, and is, indeed, a reproduction and not rare. I have seen similar lamps at antique malls and in

thrift shops priced for less than $50. Q: I have a book in the “Tell a Tale” series entitled “Little Black Sambo.” I also have the Viewmaster reel that goes with it. Can you help me determine the value? — Florence in Dubuque, Iowa A: Before I answer your question, let’s review a little literary history. The character of Little Black Sambo was introduced in 1898 by Helen Bannerman, the daughter of a Scottish minister and the wife of a surgeon in the British Army in India. The story she wrote was set in India and vividly describes a young boy’s

encounters with four tigers. The book was so popular, she followed it with three sequels: “Little Black Quibba,” “Little Black Quasha” and “Little Black Mingo.” It wasn’t until the 1930s and ‘40s that “Little Black Sambo” began to take on negative racial connotations. The book has gone through dozens of editions, but I believe your “Tell a Tale” version is probably from the 1950s. If so, it is worth about $25. The reel you have might be valued at about $10. One of my favorite references in this field of collecting is “The Art and History of Black Memorabilia” by

Larry Vincent Buster (Potter, $34.95). Q: I would like to find the value of an Alice Caviness necklace that was given to me in 1957. — Charlotte, Okeechobee, FL A: Janet Gaynor is the owner of AZillion Sparklz and has bought, sold and appraised vintage costume and fine estate jewelry for more than two decades. She might be able to help you determine the retail value of your necklace. Her contact information is P.O. Box 35038, Tucson, AZ 85740, and www.sparklz.com. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

by a wood boring beetle also commonly called wood worm and powder post beetle. Since this piece was made in England, Anobium punctatum is the most likely culprit. These holes are made as the adult beetle emerges from wood where it had spent its earlier life in the larval stage, consuming wood and creating a network of tunnels in your chest of drawers. Whether you should be concerned depends on the extent of the tunneling and if it is ongoing. Generally powder post beetles prefer newer wood, which has a higher concentration of starch, so chances are that your chest of drawers is no longer infested. However if you notice fine sawdust-like material sifting out of the exit holes, or if the exit holes look like they have been freshly drilled, you may have cause for concern. REAL ESTATE

Make your home stand out with new exterior trim (ARA) — With the housing market showing its first signs of improvement in years, many homeowners hope to attract interested buyers this spring. Replacing old or damaged exterior trim is a great way to freshen up your home today and make it stand out among others tomorrow. After location and price, curb appeal is one of the top factors for choosing a home. Curb appeal sells 49 percent of all homes, according to the National Association of Realtors. In fact, even before putting your home on the

market, your realtor often will recommend ways to make it look its very best from the street. The evaluation process starts as soon as buyers pull up. “Exterior trim that is cracked, rotted, peeling or falling apart gives a bad first impression,” says Bob Merrill, president and CEO for Chicagobased CMI, which makes MiraTEC Treated Exterior Composite Trim. “Homes with beautiful exterior trim have that wow factor that attracts buyers. Making a good first impression can be the difference between getting a signed con-

tract and keeping the ‘For Sale’ sign in the yard.” Inspect your trim Spring is an ideal time to inspect your home’s exterior trim. Walk around your house and look at the trim around your windows and doors, at the corners, and near the roofline. Warning signs of potential problems include peeling or blistering paint, green algae, warped boards, and spongy or soft spots. Check for termite damage too; they cause more damage to U.S. homes than fire, floods and storms combined.

If the trim is damaged beyond repair, the only solution is replacement. Depending on your carpentry skills, replacing exterior trim can be a doit-yourself project, but it is often best to hire a local contractor or remodeler. Before you put your house on the market, take a good look at your exterior trim. If it doesn’t look inviting at first glance, replacing it now could help make your home stand out on the block. Home Improvement Landscape lighting (NAPSA) — Offer a warm welcome, provide safety and security and increase the value of your property with a custom outdoor lighting design. Homeowners spend tens of thousands of dollars on beautiful landscaping, yet only enjoy it during the day. Wellplanned landscape lighting can add depth and a sense of luxury to your home. • First, view your home and outdoor areas from the edges of your property. Consult with a landscape lighting expert. • Decide which features to highlight. • Soft, diffused lighting along driveways, walkways and stairs provides safety and security and welcomes guests. • Strategically placed lighting in trees or under the eaves illumi-

nates larger areas. • Properly positioned ground fixtures highlight natural elements, textured walls or favorite statues. • Conceal light sources behind shrubs or flowerbeds, if possible, so you see the effect, not the fixture. View videos and articles, see more than 500,000 unique lighting products from Capitol Lighting, plus get expert advice at w w w . 1 800Lighting.com/land scape or call 800-5444846. The easy-to-navigate site even has a “Smart Shopper” feature to provide price comparisons from competitors to ensure you receive the best value. The most dramatic time to showcase the beauty of your home and landscape is after dark.

you can help protect the environment by improving gas mileage, which in turn saves money at the pump. Keep your car properly tuned for optimum performance. Regular tuneups, maintenance and having clean air filters will help your car pollute less and burn less gas. Getting a tune-up can improve gas mileage by an average of 4 percent. Simply changing the car’s air filter can improve efficiency by 10 percent. Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve gas mileage by as much as 40 percent. Drive Smart – If you have to drive your car, recognize that how you drive has a lot to do with fuel economy. Avoid sudden starts and stops and go the speed limit. Jerky and aggressive driving decreases your miles per gallon (MPG) and increases wear and tear on your vehicle. Minimize unnecessary miles by combining errands in one trip. Lighten the Load – Get the junk out of the trunk and the stuff out of your car, with the exception of emergency items such as a spare tire, flares and a first-aid kit. Extra items weigh the vehicle down and cause an increase in gas usage. Regularly check

and replace dirty air filters. An air filter that is clogged with dirt, dust and bugs chokes off the air and creates a “rich” mixture – too much gas being burned for the amount of air – that wastes gas and causes the engine to lose power. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve your car’s performance, but not miles per gallon. Have spark plugs checked and replaced if necessary. A vehicle can have four, six or eight spark plugs, which fire as many as three million times every 1,000 miles. This results in a lot of heat, electrical, and chemical erosion. A dirty spark plug also causes misfiring, which wastes fuel. Maintain the cooling system. A cooling system thermostat that causes the engine to run too cold will lower the fuel efficiency of a car by as much as one or two mpg. There also are improved radiator caps on the market today that allow the cooling system to operate at a higher temperature before boiling over, increasing the system’s efficiency and reducing emissions Source: carecare. org.

Automotive Cooling systems: repair or replace? (NAPSA) — Learning a few facts about a refrigerant commonly used in air conditioners could help you keep your cool. The refrigerant, R-22, is being phased out as part of an international environmental agreement to discontinue the use of HCFCs, or hydrochlorofluorocarbons. If you own an R-22based air-conditioning unit, here are a few facts you need to know: • If your system does not leak or need repair, it may not necessarily have a negative impact on the environment. So there is no need to

replace your system until you are ready for a new unit. • Most air-conditioning systems are designed to last at least 10 years. Because R-22 is available until 2020, it’s wise to budget accordingly. • R-22 is still one of the most energy-efficient refrigerants on the market. Purchasing a new unit costs three to four times more than repairing existing units and may not be mandatory. Please plan ahead before you pay for a costly replacement. Automotive More steps to a “Greener” Car There are preventive maintenance steps every vehicle owner can take to make sure their car is as “green” or environmentally friendly as possible, according to the Car Care Council. Tire Checks – According to the Car Care Council, around two billion gallons of gas each year could be saved if the tires on every American’s car

were properly inflated. Optimal tire pressure for your vehicle is listed in the owner’s manual. Tires that are not properly inflated add rolling resistance that makes the engine work harder to move the vehicle. All of this increases fuel costs as much as three to five cents per gallon, and increases the risk of engine damage. Gas Caps and Fill-

Ups – Check your vehicle’s gas cap. Approximately 17 percent of vehicles on the road have loose, damaged or missing gas caps, causing 147 million gallons of gas to vaporize every year. Topping off your gas tank when filling up your car can also release harmful vapors into the environment. A/C Maintenance and Use – The A/C

system should be inspected annually, during which a technician checks pressures to test operation, refrigerant charge and outlet temperatures. Use the window to help kA45eep the car cool. Vehicle Fuel System - By properly maintaining your vehicle’s fuel system, such as replacing your car’s fuel filter every two years or 24,000 miles and having your fuel injectors flushed our every 30,000 miles, you will not only have a cleaner, ‘greener’ car, but you will save money at the pump.” Emission systems Emission systems control a vehicle’s emissions, exhaust and pollutants using an array of sensors, computerized engine controls and the exhaust components. Emission systems substantially reduce harmful gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbons (HC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx), and prevent harmful gasoline vapors from escaping at the fuel tank. Your car’s emission system keeps the engine running cleanly and efficiently in all sorts of operating conditions, and keeping it in proper working condition can save money and protect the environment. Maintain and repair your car as outlined in the council’s Car Care Guide. The guide helps drivers understand their car, the care it needs, and when it needs it and why. Single copies of the free guide may be ordered here on the Car Care Council Web site. Source: www.carcare.org

Automotive Investing in your car can pay dividends (NAPSA) — When it comes to taking care of your car, keeping to a regular maintenance schedule can be like putting money in the bank. That’s because regular maintenance is an investment of sorts. This is particularly evident when an

owner sells a car. Used cars with a documented history of regular service are usually worth more, to both the buyer and the seller. That’s why, in addition to getting the maintenance done, keeping records of that work is also
