Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region, Inc. promotes the health, development and well being of children and their families. This is accomplished through the Ronald McDonald House, a home away from home for families of seriously ill children, and by creating and supporting programs that directly improve the lives of children and their families. The cornerstone Ronald McDonald House program began in 1974 based on a simple idea: Provide a "home away from home" for families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. Since that time, more than 10 million families around the world have benefited from the comfort provided by a Ronald McDonald House. Hello Again, It’s time we rev-up our engines again, and renew our dreams to convert upstate New York — Palatine Corridor into a prosperous reality. In an earlier edition of Hello Again, we chatted about a dream, a dream that led New York State to become the great Empire State. One of the greatest industrial powerhouses in the Western Hemisphere — certainly the leader in the United States. Governor Dewitt Clinton’s dream was to build a super canal waterway system connecting the Atlantic Ocean at New York City, up the Hudson River to the Albany area, and then heading west across New York State via a canal system connecting with the west. Factories and other businesses popped up along the barge canal creating one of the most important and powerful industrial zones in the world. A tradesman could lose his place of employment and have a new one the same day. Fortunes were made. A great and wonderful way of life flourished. Houses, schools, churches, higher education institutions, parks, villages, retailers, farmers, roads with bridges all played a part in this great new world. It was truly a boom area. They dreamed and built factories, huge and small, some grew to be giants, creating a wonderful, prosperous way of life. Now most of those factories are gone, leaving behind one great question: What happened? I believe many answers could be presented. New York State and Federal government interference, labor unions growing too large and powerful demanding more from the factories than the marketplace could bear. Taxes, businesses failing to change with the changing times; the dreamers grew old and died. Sure, all of these played a part but I believe what really happened... men and women stopped dreaming, planning, building. Possibly the banks found other easier ways to lend money and made it nearly impossible for new, and even old established businesses, to borrow needed funds. People just stopped doing what worked, stopped dreaming, planning, and acting. Except for pleasure boating, the once great commercial barge canal, which passed through the very heart of hundreds of our villages, creating thousands of business opportunities has all but stopped being used commercially. Now we have a great business enemy called the New York State Thomas E. Dewey Thruway. Cars, trucks, buses full of money-spending people can get on the thruway, travel from the greatest city in the Western Hemisphere — New York City — travel north to Albany, our capital, and drive west into Northern Pennyslvania and never have a business or personal comfort reason to visit any of our villages along its pathway. They can buy gas, food, enjoy comfort stations, rest areas, and never leave Thruway-controlled property. They do leave behind engine smoke and some road noise. Now where is all this negative chatter leading? Simply stated, it’s time for another new, big, powerful dream-tag it “Fred’s Folly” if you choose! Let’s dream together. Right here under our noses we have one of the greatest gold mine potentials and opportunities. A gold mine so big and endless that it would be impossible to place an estimate on its potential value. It’s ours to tap in to.
Original Valley PENNYSAVER • March 17, 2012
Page 7
Remember, “When one door closes, another will open.” In the 1950’s the fantastic Thomas E. Dewey N.Y. Thruway opened. This opening robbed our area of tons of business because travelers no longer needed to use Route 5 and 20. Businesses by the thousands dried up. Now this closed door can be opened and we can use the Thruway to build our own gold mine. Every hour of every day, 365 days a year, cars, buses, campers, trucks by the hundreds of thousands drive through our valley heading either east or west. Very few stop here. Why? If you have been wondering where will the customers come from to support our dream of factory outlet stores, specialty shops such as a Christmas store, teddy bear store, American Doll, or a Nashville-type music hall here in the Palatine Corridor you will find the following data interesting. Seventy-five thousand vehicles every day use the Thruway, which means over 27 million cars each year. The population of Albany County is 304,204. Saratoga County 219,607. Schenectady County 154,727. Schoharie County 32,749. Fulton County 55,531. Montgomery County 50,219. Hamilton County 4,836. Herkimer County 64,519. Otsego County 62,259. Oneida County 234,878. Total population within a one-hour drive from our Palatine Corridor: three million, eight hundred fifty-three thousand, eight hundred sixty nine (3,853,869). Plus 27 million cars annually on the Thruway, or 75,000 daily. If 1-2 percent of these people visited our Palatine dream area, we would have so many job opportunities a “job jumper” could change places of employment at will. Our school and property tax would be basically wiped out. Our share of the sales tax would drive our politicians giddy. If we build, they will come. Enough serious chatter. It’s time for a little Irish blarney. The farmer had just been pulled over to the curb for speeding. The officer, pad in hand, approached the car. “O.K.” snapped the officer. “What’s your name?” “Aloysius Glouctershire Merkowitzskyvitch III,” the driver replied. “Well,” the cop said, pocketing his ticket book. “Don’t let me catch you again.” ******* Just about the time a fellow is cured of swearing, it’s time to file another income tax. ****** A young lad was questioned by his minister. “Why do you lie so much?” I’m practicing to be a weather reporter, he replied. ******* We will be home again in April and at that time will attempt to form a Palatine Corridor business advisory group. If you believe you would like to participate, please write to: Palatine Corridor Group, PO Box 121, Palatine Bridge, NY 13428 If you start each day talking with your Heavenly Father, he will walk along with you. Fred Lee and the Lee Family

Whatchmacallits
Page 21
Anyone who has served in the military might have an advantage at guessing the function of this week’s Whatchmacallit. Before military uniforms became drab, and now camouflage, to help conceal the wearer, brass buttons were the norm. The military then, as now, was big on “spit and polish.” Anyone who has polished military brass insignias knows how messy the process is and that the brass has to be unpinned from the uniform to keep it clean. However, it’s impractical to remove uniform buttons, polish them and then sew them back on. In order to polish brass buttons without soiling the uniform itself, a uniform button polishing guard was used. The hinged guard shown here, owned by Willis “Skip” Barshied Jr. is a classic example.

Answers to this week’s puzzles
Medicare Savings Program The Medicare Saving Program (MSP) is funded by the State Medicaid program. It is also known as the Medicare Buy-In program that helps pay for costs if you are financially limited. The Medicare Savings Program will pay your Part B premium for you each month. This premium is taken out of your Social Security Check on a monthly basis. In certain situations if your income is low enough it will pay for co-payments for Medicare covered services. To qualify as an individual your income needs to be under $1,277 per month and for a couple your income needs
to be under $1,723. If your income is above these levels you may still qualify. If you pay a Supplemental Insurance Premium not including your Medicare premium you can deduct that amount from your income and check the income guidelines. For example: if you are an individual with a monthly income of $1,349 monthly and you pay a Supplemental Insurance premium of $150 per month, you would still qualify for the Medicare Savings Program. For more information, please contact NY Connects or Office for the Aging at 518867-1415.

$4,000 per year. Many people qualify for these big savings and don’t even know it. To qualify for Extra Help: • Your resources must be limited to $13,070 for an individual or $26,120 for a married couple living together. Resources include such things as bank accounts, stocks, and bonds. They do not
count your home, car, or any life insurance policy • Your annual monthly income must be limited to $1,396 for an individual and 1,891 for a married couple living together. Even if your monthly income is higher, you still may be able to get some help. How do I apply? • You can apply online at www.socialsecuri-

Sealing leaks Many air leaks and drafts are easy to find because they are easy to feel — like those around windows and doors. But holes hidden in attics, basements, and crawlspaces are usually bigger problems. Sealing these leaks with caulk, spray foam, or weather stripping will have a great impact on improving your comfort and reducing utility bills. Homeowners are often concerned about sealing their house too tightly; however, this is very unlikely in most older homes. A certain amount of fresh air is needed for good indoor air quality and there are specifications that set the minimum amount of fresh air needed for a house. If you are concerned about how
tight your home is, hire a contractor, such as a Home Energy Rater, who can use diagnostic tools to measure your home’s actual leakage. If your home is too tight, a fresh air ventilation system may be recommended. For additional information on Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) issues related to homes, such as combustion safety, visit www.epa.gov/iaq/ho mes/hip-front.html. Source: www.energystar.gov

Making a difference with Sage by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Most of us visit McDonald’s at least once in a while and use the convenient drive-through window. And many of us have made that donation requested by the employee there to give one dollar helping to support the Ronald McDonald House. Recently, Sage Stinson did that very thing in the month before she turned 9 years old. Afterwards, she asked her mom, Cameo, for an explanation of what the Ronald McDonald House was. When she learned that Ronald McDonald Houses provide a “homeaway-from-home” for families of seriously ill children receiving medical treatment, an idea formed in her mind. She decided she would take advantage of her upcoming birthday to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House.
At the Hop!
“I’m a 50’s girl!” Sage laughs. “I love movies about the 50’s, and I love the movie Grease!” So, it seemed only natural to her that she would use the 50’s theme for her birthday party. “I decided I wanted to have a sock hop,” Sage said. “Grandpa was my DJ. We called him Jimbo the DJ!” Sage’s “Grandpa” is the well-known Jim Miller of the Jan & Jim duo. Staying in tune with the theme, 50’s music was played throughout the birthday party. With her mom’s help Sage designed posters reflecting the theme for the party’s menu, and she invited 20 of her best friends, asking them to dress according to the 50’s theme. In lieu of birthday presents, she requested donations be made to the Ronald McDonald House. “Sage raised almost

in Mrs. Sharon Towse’s class in Canajoharie. You can also make a difference. To donate to the Ronald McDonald House go to http://rmhc.org/howyou-can-help/ donate.

AUTOMOTIVE Don’t keep your heap! The economy is showing signs of recovery even with the rising cost of gas. Many people who held on to their car during the recession are now looking to replace it with a more fuel efficient one. If you are one of those people, you have to figure out what to do with your car. If your vehicle does not get good gas mileage, has a lot of miles, is more than 5 years old or is not in good condition, the dealership won’t offer you much for it as a trade in. They won’t want it because there is no demand for it. It will
be difficult to sell it privately for the same reason. One alternative is to sell it for a couple of hundred dollars to a junk yard. A better alternative is to donate your car to charity. Cars4Charities will gladly take your old car, no matter what shape it is in. In return for your generosity, you will get a tax deduction of $500 or more. They have hundreds of charities that can be helped by your car donation. For details, please go to www.cars4charities.or g/ or call 866-4483487.

AUTOMOTIVE Drive smart With no end in sight to rising gas prices, fconsumers who modify their driving habits rand properly maintain their vehicles will get more miles per gallon. The Car Care Council recommends the following ways to drive smart and save gas money: • Observe the speed limit. Gas mileage decreases rapidly above 60 mph. • Avoid excessive yidling. Idling gets zero miles per gallon. Warming up the vehicle for one or two minutes is sufficient. • Avoid quick starts and stops. Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent in the city. • Consolidate trips. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much gas as one longer multi-purpose trip. • Don’t haul unneeded items in the trunk. An extra 100 pounds in the trunk reduces fuel economy by 1 to 2 percent. • Check the gas cap. Damaged, loose or missing gas caps allow gas to vaporize into the air. • Replace dirty or clogged air filters on older vehicles to improve gas mileage by as much as 14 percent. • Replace dirty spark plugs, which can reduce mileage by two miles per gallon. • Change oil regularly and gain another mile per gallon. • Keep your car properly tuned to improve gas mileage
by an average of 4 percent. • Keep tires properly inflated and improve gas mileage by 3 percent. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the

TAX TIME Dollars and Sense by David Uffington Handling lump-sum benefits and taxes If you began receiving Social Security Disability Insurance payments in 2011, you could have a problem when you file your tax return and end up paying too much. Here’s why: Since it takes so long to begin receiving SSDI benefits, it’s possible that you’ll receive a onetime lump-sum payment that includes back payments for previous years. Those benefits are taxable income, and you could pay taxes at a rate up to a whopping 50 percent. The calculation to determine your income includes any other income you
have. According to a news release by the Allsup Disability Life Planning Center, an average SSDI benefit is $1,073, which comes to $12,876 for the year. For a couple, a total income of more than $19,000 (or $9,950 for an individual) requires that a tax return be filed. However, if you receive a large lumpsum payment and report that, as well as any other income, you could end up paying too much in taxes. This is where you’ll need the help of a tax preparer or tax preparation software to complete your return: You’re allowed to spread that lump-sum income out over previ-
ous years. You’ll receive a Form 1099 showing the amount of SSDI income you received, with the amount showing in Box 3. If you want to complete your return yourself or read about filing to get an estimate of the tax you might owe, go online to the Internal Revenue Service website at irs.gov and search for Publication 915. The name is “Social Security and Equivalent Railroad Retirement Benefits.” Look for the Lump-Sum Election on page 11 for detailed instructions on the Worksheets 1 through 4 that need to be filled out. Scroll down and look for the examples of the worksheets. The result of the calculations on those work-
sheets determine which election method will get you the lowest tax. Publication 915 contains other helpful information as well. If you receive a FORM SSA-1042S Social Security Benefit Statement and don’t understand the numbers in the various boxes, the publication explains each one. If you receive railroad retirement benefits on FORM RRB1099, this publication explains the figures in each of the 11 boxes. If you do your taxes yourself and have a question, you can contact the IRS at 800-829-1040. Your best bet, however, if you’ve received a lump-sum benefit, is to get help from a tax preparer.(c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

What March brings: spring forward, National Nutrition Month and more Even though it sometimes seems that March is the last month you need to survive before warmer weather starts, the month does bring a lot of important healthrelated observances. With these reminders from USA.gov, you can make March a healthy month: • We set our clocks ahead last weekend! Sunday, March 11 was the start of daylight savings time this year. Most states set their clocks forward by one hour last Sunday night, so you lost an hour of sleep. And if you’re like most people, you already don’t get the full amount of sleep you need. Sleep problems and disorders are more common than you think. Find out how you can get a better night’s sleep. • It’s easy to forget how important nutrition is to you and your family. National Nutrition Month reminds you to pay attention to what your family is eating and offers tips on how to get back on a healthy track. DietaryGuidelines.go v is a good place to start to see if your family is getting the
nutrition they need. Nutrition.gov provides shopping, cooking and meal planning tips. A variety of other resources from USA.gov can help you figure out the best food choices for you and your family. • Colorectal cancer affects thousands of women and men every year, and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Over 90 percent of cases occur in those 50 years of age and older. Colorectal cancer screenings saves thousands of lives each year, so encourage your loved ones to get an annual screening. March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month; learn more about how to prevent and treat it. • March is also Red Cross Month. The American Red Cross helps millions of people worldwide prevent, prepare for and cope with emergencies and is the largest single supplier of donated blood in the U.S. Find contact information for the chapter closest to you, and learn the history and importance of the Red Cross.

Collecting Maple SAP Just about the time we start to see temperatures rise above freezing, maple sap begins flowing. In Western New York, this occurs around late February and early March. Because sap can flow even
when the tree is dormant, the temperature change is essential since it draws water from the trees' roots through the tree, allowing the sap to flow more easily. Keeping the trees healthy
and productive is a major concern, so selecting the proper trees and inserting the best number of taps is vital. Current recommendations call for one tap for trees at least 12 inches in diameter and two
Visitors learn how to tap a maple tree at Merle Maple Farms in Attica.
taps for trees with a diameter greater than 18 inches. This conservative tapping guideline produces less sap per tree in the short-term, but is more productive long-term. The next consideration involves collecting sap safely and not injuring the tree beyond its ability to heal. Trees properly tapped can produce sap for decades. So, maple producers use a specialized bit which drills a hole about a half-inch wide and three inches deep. The hole is drilled about four-and-a-half fee above the ground at an upward angle of about 10 degrees. That allows gravity to assist in draining the sap from the trees. Maple producers use a specialized piece of equipment called a spile to draw the sap from the tree. A spile is similar to a spigot. It's gently inserted into the tree by hand and then seated with a mallet or hammer. Spiles serve several purposes - they provide a
seal against the spread of microorganisms into the tree, they allow sap to flow out and they support the sap collection system (bucket or plastic tubing). Spiles remain in the tree until the sap season is completed, generally when the sap flow ceases or when sap loses it sugar content. When you think of tapping maple trees, you think of covered buckets hanging from spiles. But in the 1950s, plas-
tic tubing made maple tapping less labor-intensive and more cost-efficient. The tubes connected each tree to a central collection system. Since the 1960s, maples producers have used vacuum pumps with plastic tubing systems to collect sap. Sap often is stored in tanks holding the equivalent of two days of good sap flow, or about two to three gallons per tap.
Processing Maple SAP The sweet process of turning sap to syrup happens in a sugarhouse. But this sugarhouse is quite different from the one Hansel and Gretel happened upon - a fully equipped sugarhouse contains a great deal of equipment, including a storage tank, an evaporator, a readily accessible fuel supply, and perhaps modern technologies such as a reverse osmosis, preheating, or vapor compression systems. Other items include facilities to store and package syrup, and perhaps a kitchen for production of other products such as maple candy. Traditionally, wood was used to fuel the evaporators to pro-
duce maple syrup. Wood fires created a homey atmosphere that many maple producers believe is part of the perfect maple experience. And wood is easily available as a fuel, aiding in forest management when diseased and fallen trees are used. But most woodfired evaporators are inefficient compared to modern evaporators powered by other fuels. It takes one full cord of wood (128 cubic feet) to produce approximately 25 gallons of syrup. It takes time to make maple syrup. Water is removed from the sap by heating it, concentrating its sugar from two percent to approximately 66%.
“Taste the Sweetness of Nature!”
Mud Road Sugar House
In modern evaporators, sap flows into a "sap pan" and is heated, allowing evaporation. Then the concentrated sap flows into a "syrup pan" for finishing. The finishing pan typically is an open-topped large pan heated from below. It allows a controlled removal of syrup as it reaches the final stages of processing, creating higher-grade, uniform syrup. Most commercial operations rely on hydrometers or refractometers to accurately assess sugar concentration. Noncommercial operators may use "sheeting", a process that takes a flat edge scoop and dips and removes it from the nearly-finished sap. The flat edge sheds the syrup in "sheets" if it has reached the correct sugar concentration. Commercial producers often store syrup in 30-gallon
drums during the production season. Syrup in drums can be sold in bulk to various outlets or repackaged by the producer
into smaller containers. Before packaging, maple syrup is filtered to remove precipitates that form during
Checking on the boiling process of the sap.
