...fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. ~ Hebrews 12: 2-3

Hello Again, We will be heading for home soon to buy a new TV set. My wife says she has seen everything at least twice on the old one. My next-door neighbor was complaining about his gray hair until a man walked by who was bald. It seems we live through three stages in life: Youth, middle age, and you never looked better. On the other hand, getting older has special advantages such as, you can whistle while you brush your teeth. During the war, a bright young Fort Plain farmer in the army overseas received a letter from his wife wanting to know how she was going to plant the tomatoes, corn and potatoes on their 30-acre lot. The soldier wrote back, “Whatever you do, don’t dig up the 30 acres, that’s where the guns are buried.” As is customary in wartime, his letter was read by a censor. Not long after, he received a reply from his upset young wife saying “a company of soldiers overran the 30 acres and dug it all up, what should I do now?” He replied, “Now plant the tomatoes, corn and potatoes.” This tale may have happened over near the Cherry Valley hills. A revenue man stopped a country boy and offered him $1 if he took him to his Dad’s still. “OK,” the boy said, “but I want the buck in advance.” “Oh, no,” the agent said, “not until you point it out.” “Look here,” the boy countered. “If I take you to my Dad’s still, you ain’t comin’ back.” One afternoon a lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the road-side eating grass. He asked one man, “Why are you eating grass?” “We don’t have any money for food,” the poor man replied. “We have to eat grass.” “Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I’ll feed

you, the lawyer said. “But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree.” “Bring them alone,” the lawyer replied. Turning to the other poor man he stated, “You may come with us, also.” The second man, in a pitiful voice, then said, “But sir, I also have a wife and SIX children with me!” “Bring them as well,” the lawyer answered. They all entered the car, which was no easy task even for a car as large as the limousine was. Once under way, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, “Sir, you are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you.” The lawyer replied, “Glad to do it. You’ll really love my place. The grass is almost a foot high.” Something to think about: Our ex-vice president recently received a heart transplant and he is over 70 years old. Now this is what we should chat about. The writers of the liberal press are saying “he is too old to receive a heart transplant, it should go to a younger person.” The very same liberal newspaper writers are in full support of the Obama National Health Program. It is a published fact that both countries — England and Canada — have a national health program and old people are often refused proper medical treatment because they are too old. It is said their national health program has to choose between young and old. I don’t know about you, but I am 77 years old and I am not looking forward to a six foot hole in the ground because someone else is chosen due to age. In fact, I am older than the vice president. Hope to see you soon. Stay well and may God continue to bless you. Fred Lee and the Lee Family P.S. If we end up with Obama’s health program, plan to get sick or hurt young so that the health program will come to your aid in time.

Fort Plain Drama Club presents ‘The Fantasticks’ by Elizabeth A. Tomlin “It’s been a long road — but a rewarding one,” Director Will Ryan said, referring to the Fort Plain Drama Club’s presentation of the musical comedy, The Fantasticks. “The kids had great energy and it showed on stage.” Ryan says that the play is a favorite of his and of Music Director Julieanne Sincavage, and it was chosen for that reason and also because they felt it was the best fit for the talent of the Fort Plain Drama Club. The play has a history of being the world’s longest-running off-Broadway musical with a record 17,162 consecutive performances, originally opening on May 3, 1960 and running through January 13, 2002. It was one of the first American musicals to be produced around the world — throughout the U.S. and in 67 foreign countries. It is well known for its production of the song ‘Try to Remember’, which hit the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart three times in 1965 — and several times since then. It is only one of the musical pieces the play is known for. Those who viewed the production will long remember the extraordinary

voices of Tara Resch as Luisa, Derek Lamb as Matt, Kristy Richardson as Matt’s mother, Bryan MacFadden as Luisa’s father, and Matt Soto as El Gallo. Narrators and vocalists Elizabeth Hubbard, Danyel King and Sonya Hecht were an added pleasure. “This has been one of the most dedicated casts that I have worked with in my nine years with the drama club,” remarked Stage Manager Lauri Dahlin. “They had very difficult music to learn, and there are a lot of lines spread amongst not very many people. In the past two weeks I have watched each one of them come to school early, stay after, walk around with scripts in their hand, and sit in the hallway listening to the CD. They are not only gifted individuals, but some of the nicest kids around — and it is a pleasure to work with them.” Although the play usually has a very small cast, Ryan expanded the original script to include more members of the d r a m a club and some of the lines originally intended for El

Gallo were divided between extra cast members. In the play, the assumption that reverse psychology will bring their children together inspires small town neighbors to pretend they are feuding and to build a wall between their homes, hoping that an attraction between the two youngsters will prevail. This successful maneuver is given a hand through the action of a mock abduction — and a resultant fight making the son a hero. Although all seems well, the young couple soon discover the parent’s trickery, which causes their relationship to become thwarted. Fantasy sequences follow as each looks to the ways of the world for happiness, only to discover that what they really desire is to be together again. A happy ending ensues, leaving the audience with a feeling of nostalgia and the strains of Try to Remember reverberating in their thoughts.

Hired professional bandit and villain, El Gallo (Matt Soto), looks into his 'crystal ball' as meddling parents Bellomy (Bryan MacFadden) and Violet Hucklebee (Kristy Richardson) consider their choices.

Whatchmacallits F r e n c h m a n Nicholas Appert is credited with the invention of preserving food by canning. Appert, who was born in 1749 and lived to the ripe old age of 91, famously won the prize of 12,000 francs offered by Napoleon Bonaparte to the person who could create a method of food preservation so the emporer could feed his army in the field. After all, it was Napoleon who said, “An Army marches on its stomach.” Appert claimed the prize in January 1810 after about 15 years of experimentation. In August of that year, British merchant

Peter Durand received a patten for preserving food by canning. Importantly, Durand was the first to mention the use of tin cans — Appert’s method used glass

jars. Sealing food in tin cans gave rise to the need for can openers. Kitchen tools back then were made of iron, forged by blacksmiths. The can

opener shown here, owned by Willis “Skip” Barshied Jr., is an early example. This opener was a dual purpose tool that also doubled as a knive sharpener.

Empty Pockets draws full house ~ benefiting Schoharie Flood Relief by Elizabeth A. With that goal in mind, the Empty Pockets Band, including Eddie and Phyllis Reese, Milt Beaulieu, Gail Mabie and John Ploss recently performed to an overflowing crowd at St. John’s - St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Canajoharie. This benefit for the Schoharie Valley Flood victims raised nearly $800. The coffeehouse was the third of a series that was planned and organized by St. John’s -St. Mark’s WELCA Chair, Linda Klump. “I think we had more people come through the door for this event than for the others,” Klump said, estimating that there were over 100 attendees. “We were very pleased that there was a full house!” said vocalist Phyllis Reese, who has been singing with the Empty Pockets for about 6 years. The band performed many old-time gospel favorites such as, ‘I’ll Fly Away’ and ‘I Saw the Light,’ and some old-time Country & Western tunes including ‘Paper Roses’ and

Picking the perfect ceiling paint color Most people paint their ceiling white or off-white because these shades reflect light and coordinate well with other colors. Ceilings, however, can be one of the best places to use a fun splash of color. High ceilings can benefit from a lightly tinted color to make

rooms that might appear too large and expansive feel more human and cozy. Painting low ceilings with semi-gloss paint, on the other hand, will make them seem higher. Crown molding in a darker color can draw the eye upwards.

To Your Good Health by Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Heart-attack victims can grow new arteries Dear Dr. Donohue: I don’t remember you addressing this subject, so I thought I would write. In 1997, I had a mild heart attack and went on medicines. Six months later I had another mild incident that led me to angioplasty. Ever since, I have been eating well, exercising and taking all my meds. My cardiologist says I have great collaterals. I have sprouted new vessels for my heart. I thought I should have some kind of intervention, but the doctor says no. Can you discuss autogenesis? Am I related to a starfish? — R.S. Answer: You’re the first writer ever to use the word “autogenesis.” If a starfish loses an arm, it grows another — autogenesis. Humans have the same ability when it comes to blood vessels. They can grow new ones, and do so in many instances. Heart-attack victims often can sprout new arteries. It’s a long process. It doesn’t happen overnight. And it

doesn’t happen to all people. Count yourself lucky. Dear Dr. Donohue: I looked in the mirror this morning and couldn’t believe what I saw. My right eye was bright red. It looked like someone had punched me. When my husband saw it, he asked if he had hit me while he was asleep. He didn’t. It doesn’t hurt. My vision is perfect. My eye looks frightful. Do I need to see a doctor? — Y.T. Answer: Your question is asked repeatedly. My long-distance guess is a subconjunctival hemorrhage. The conjunctiva is a cellophane-like covering of the eye. Beneath it is a network of invisible blood vessels. When one of those delicate vessels breaks, blood covers that part of the eye. Coughing, sneezing or straining causes the breakage. Sometimes it happens for no apparent reason. The eye looks awful, but no real harm is done. The blood is absorbed in about a week. You can hurry it up by putting warm compresses over the closed eye. You need to see a doc-

tor if the eye begins to pain you, if the blood stays for longer than a week or if it happens time and again. Dear Dr. Donohue: Does heartburn cause asthma attacks? It sounds weird to me, but my doctor thinks that’s what causing my breathing problems. He has me on medicines for heartburn. I can’t believe they’ll help. — J.R. Answer: Your doctor isn’t coming from out of left field. Heartburn can be an asthma trigger. Heartburn is officially called gastroesophageal reflux — an upward shooting of stomach acid and digestive juices into the esophagus, the swallowing tube. The juices can rise so far up that they leak out of the esophagus and trickle into the bronchi, the airways. That’s what sets off an asthma attack. (c) 2012 North America Synd., Inc. PO Box 208, 11 West Grand St., Palatine Bridge, NY 13428 Ph: 518 - 673 - 2917 • Fax: 518 - 673 - 3481 ID #2800142 INTRODUCTION To comply with State regulation, The Village of Palatine Bridge will be annually issuing a report describing the quality of your drinking water. The purpose of this report is to raise your understanding of drinking water and awareness of the need to protect our drinking water sources. Last year, your tap water met all State drinking water health standards. We are proud to report that our system has never violated a maximum contaminant level. This report provides an overview of last year's water quality. Included are details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to State standards. If you have any questions about this report or concerning your drinking water, please contact Mr. Rodney Sutton, Water Superintendent, Village of Palatine Bridge, 11 W. Grand St., Palatine Bridge, NY 13428; Telephone (518) 673 2917 or in an emergency (518) 791-8079. We want you to be informed about your drinking water. If you want to learn more, please attend any of our regularly scheduled village board meetings. They are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, 7:00 PM at the Village Hall, 11 W. Grand St; telephone (518) 673-2917. Village office hours are 8:00am to 1:00pm Monday thru Thursday, 3pm to 6pm Thursday and 8:00am to 11:00am Friday. WHERE DOES OUR WATER COME FROM? In general, the sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activities. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: microbial contaminants; inorganic contaminants; pesticides and herbicides; organic chemical contaminants; and radioactive contaminants. In order to ensure that tap water is sage to drink, the State and the EPA prescribe regulations, which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. The State Health Department's and the FDA's regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health. The Village of Palatine Bridge draws its water from a ground water source. The Village is served by one drilled well 1000-feet deep located 1.5 miles north of the Village boundary on State Highway Route 10. Pumping capacity for this well is approximately 500 gallons per minute. Treatment of the raw water produced by the well consists of chlorination, which is used for disinfection to protect against contamination from harmful bacteria and other organisms. We have a 300,000-gallon underground storage tank and a 250,000-gallon above ground storage to meet consumer demand and provide adequate fire protection. We provide water through 342 service connections to a population of approximately 900 people. Our average daily demand is 165,000-gallons per day. In February of 2005 a new triplex water softening system was installed to provide better water quality. SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT The NYS DOH has completed a source water assessment for the Village of Palatine Bridge water system, based on available information. Possible and actual threats to this drinking water source were evaluated. The state source water assessment includes a susceptibility rating based on the risk posed by each potential source of contamination and how easily contaminants can move through the sub-surface to the well. The susceptibility rating is an estimate of the potential for contamination. See section "Are there contaminants in our drink water?" for a list of contaminants, if any that has been detected. The source water assessments provide resource managers with additional information for protecting source waters into the future. As mentioned before our water is derived from a drilled well. The source water assessment has rated this well as having a high susceptibility to bacteria, viruses, and protozoa and a medium- high susceptibility to herbicides, pesticides and nitrates. These ratings are due primarily to agricultural activities in the assessment area. In addition, the well draws from an unconfined aquifer of high hydraulic conductivity. While the source water assessment rates our well as being susceptible to microbials, pleas note that our water is disinfected to ensure that the finish water delivered into your home meet New York State's drinking water standard for microbial contamination. A copy of the source water assessment, including a map of the assessment area, can be obtained by contacting us as noted in the introduction in the first section. ARE THERE CONTAMINANTS IN OUR DRINKING WATER? As the State regulations require, we routinely test your drinking water for numerous contaminants. We test your drinking water for inorganic compounds, nitrite, nitrate, lead and copper, volatile organic compounds, and synthetic organic compounds. In addition, we test for coliform bacteria once a month, and fluoride and chlorine daily. The table presented below depicts which compounds were detected in your drinking water. This table shows the results of our monitoring for the period of January 1st to December 31st, 2011. The State allows us to test for some contaminants less than once per year because the concentration of these contaminants does not change frequently. Some of our data, though representative, are more than one year old. You may obtain a copy of all our test results by contacting the Village office or Rodney Sutton. It should be noted that all drinking water, including bottled drinking water, might be reasonably expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that

water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791) or the New York State Department of Health, District Office, 5665 State Route 5, Herkimer, NY, telephone; (315-866-6879). This table does not represent all testing. We have met all NY State Standards. A copy of all our testing is available at the village office.

Parts per million (ppm) or Milligrams per liter (mg/l) - one part per million corresponds to one minute in two years or a single penny in $10,000. or 1000ppb equal 1ppm Ex: 500ppb= . 5ppm Parts per billion (ppb) or Micrograms per liter (ug/l) - one part per billion corresponds to one minute in 2,000 years, or a single penny in $10,000,000. Parts per trillion (ppt) or Nanograms per liter (nanograms/l) - one part per trillion corresponds to one minute in 2,000,000 years, or a single penny in $10,000,000,000. Maximum Contaminant Level - (mandatory language) The "Maximum Allowed" (MCL) is the highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible using the best available treatment technology. Maximum Contaminant Level Goal - (mandatory language) The "Goal" (MCLG) is the level of a contaminant in drinking water below, which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety. n/a-not applicable WHAT DOES THIS INFORMATION MEAN? As you can see by the table, our system had no violations. We have learned through or testing that some contaminants were detected; however these contaminants were detected below the level allowed by the State. IS OUR WATER SYSTEM MEETING OTHER RULES THAT GOVERN OPERATION? During the year 2011, our system was in compliance with applicable State drinking water operating, monitoring and reporting requirements. DO I NEED TO TAKE SPECIAL PRECAUCTIONS? Although our drinking water met or exceeded state and federal regulations, some people may be more vulnerable to disease causing microorganisms or pathogens in drinking water than the general population. Infants and young children are typically more vulnerable to lead in drinking water than the general population. It is possible that lead levels at your home may be higher than at other homes in the community as results of materials used in your home's plumping. If you are concerned about elevated lead levels in your home's water, you may wish to have your water tested and flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using tap water. Additional information is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline. Immuno-compromised person such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotheraphy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice from their health care provider about their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium, Giardia and other microbial pathogens are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

*EPA's MCL for Fluoride is 4000 ppb; however, our state has set a lower MCL to better protect human health

Definitions: Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible. Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level (MRDL): The highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary for control of microbial contaminants. Action Level (AL) - the concentration of a contaminant which, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements, which a water system must follow. Treatment Technique (TT) - a required process intended to reduce the level of a contaminant in drinking water. Non-Detects (ND) - laboratory analysis indicates that the constituent is not present. Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU): A measure of the clarity of water. Turbidity is excess of 5 NTU is just noticeable to the average person. Milligrams per liter (mg/l): Corresponds to one part of liquid in one million parts of liquid (parts per million-ppm) Micrograms per liter (ug/l): corresponds to one part of liquid in one billion parts of liquid (parts per billion - ppb) Nanograms per liter (ng/l): Corresponds to one part of liquid to one trillion parts of liquid (parts per trillion - ppt) Picograms per liter (pg/l): corresponds to one part per of liquid to one quadrillion parts of liquid (parts per quadrillion ppq) Picocuries per liter (pCi/L): A measure of the radioactivity in water. Millirems per year (mrem/yr): A measure of radiation absorbed by the body. Million Fibers per Liter (MFL): A measure of the presence of asbestos fibers that are longer that 10 micrometers.

WHY SAVE WATER AND HOW TO AVOID WASTING IT? Although our system has an adequate amount of water to meet present demands, there are a number of reasons why it is important to conserve water. * Saving water saves energy and some of cost associated with both of these necessities of life. * Saving water reduces the cost of energy required to pump water and the cost of treating the water. * Saving water lessens the strain on the water system during a dry spell or drought, helping to avoid severe water use restrictions. So that essential fire fighting needs is met. You can play a role in conserving water by becoming conscious of the amount of water your household is using, and by looking for ways to use less whenever you can. It is not hard to conserve water. Conservation tips include: * Automatic dishwashers use 15 gallons for every cycle, regardless of how many dishes are loaded. So get a run for your money and load it to capacity. * Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. * Check every faucet in your home for leaks. Just a slow drip can waste 15 to 20 gallons a day, 3600 gallons in 6 months. A steady drip or stream 1/16" at 60lbs pressure can waste 74,000 gallons in 3 months. * Check your toilets for leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring in the tank, watch for a few minutes to see if the color shows up in the bowl. It is not uncommon to lose up to 100 gallons a day from one of otherwise invisible toilet leaks. A 100 gallons a day can amount to 9000 gallons in a 3month period or 18000 in a 6-month period. * A One Quarter (1/4) inch Hose or stream of water at 60 lbs of water pressure can amount to a lost of 13,000 gallons or more in 24 hours. WATER RATES In 2011 the water customers in Village of Palatine Bridge were charged $8.00 per 1000 gallons with a minimum of $96.00, while out of village limits customers were charged $16.00 per 1000 gallons with a minimum of $192.00 CLOSING Thank you for allowing us to continue to provide your family with quality drinking water this year.
