Hello Again, This “Hello Again” will bring the total of our weekly chats up to 90. I can hear some old fellow saying, “How can anybody write so much about nothing?” It’s easier than you may think. Sort of like the old country preacher when he said, “I just stand up behind the pulpit on Sunday and keep on preaching until I think of something to say.” Sort of reminds me of the long-winded preacher on Sunday, after an extra long sermon said, “Well folks, what more can I say?” With that an older gent’s voice in the back of the church was heard saying “A-men.” It won’t do you any good to say, amen, I won’t hear you anyway. Who knows, maybe I will think of something to write about. You can bank on one thing: everything I write about will be the honest truth or Irish blarney. All you will have to do is read and decide. The main difference between my writing and most political columnist is I know the difference between the truth and blarney. They fill the newspaper columns with blarney and believe what they are writing about, and/or read some other writer’s blarney and quote it as the gospel truth. Remember, the old, often repeated saying, “Believe only half of what you hear and nothing of what you read in the newspaper.” Now we can add television and radio news announcements in the newspaper group. Monday afternoon I had the opportunity to have a friendly chat with a beautiful, sparkling, snow-white haired lady. Our little chat brought back a collection of fond memories. Many of you will remember Mrs. Angie Marcellino and their fruit and vegetable stand. Angie and her husband ran Marcellino’s Fruit and Vegetable Stand in Fort Plain on Route 5S for over 42 years. After Mr. Marcellino passed, Angie kept the business going for a few years. When we first moved into the valley, during the season we visited the stand for our weekly supply of fresh fruits and veggies. While the produce was always great, I think most of their customers kept coming back not only for produce but for a little chat with this lovely couple. Here we go again, “Those were the days my friends.” I have been a reader of the daily newspaper for most of my life, dating way back into the 1940’s. I wouldn’t miss a day of reading the comic strips, The Phantom, Blondie with her husband Dagwood, or Henry. I’m sure even at that age we accepted those comic strips as far-fetched make-believe whopper tales. Certainly not suitable, intelligent literature or newsworthy. Now days, the far-fetched whoppers are not found in the comic page but often headlined on the front, national news or editorial pages.

For example, when Sarah Palin was running for vice president of the United States, Mr. Strock, a (I guess) respected, or at least talked about, columnist for the Schenectady daily, The Gazette, attempted to portray her as an eight-headed witless beast; like some dumb freak of nature. I doubt if he ever met Mrs. Palin and drew his opinion from some other super-opinionated liberal writer who also had never met her. Why would the Gazette waste the paper for his column to appear? I often wanted to meet the publisher of that fine newspaper and say, “Shame on you.” How would he have handled his column concerning Mrs. Palin if she had been a potential candidate on the democratic ticket for vice president? It is my personal belief, if you agree with Mr. Strock’s writing in the Schenectady Daily Gazette, you must have believed in the Phantom and accepted Dagwood and Blondie as real people. But—then what would life be like without blarney and fairy tales? A little hope is starting to appear. The Monday, April 2, 2012 edition of the Amsterdam daily, “The Recorder,” on page 8, the opinion-editorial page appeared a column written by Michael Reagan, the son of President Ronald Reagan. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. Under the head, “Isn’t that nice,” a writer with an opinion column that deserved space. Mr. Strock take notice—maybe there is hope—you can learn you can be fair. It appears to me, most of the liberal leaning commentators and writers feel it’s their calling in life to pull a hood over the readers heads while introducing them to a line of blarney hiding their innocent eyes and ears from the truth. Possibly after all of this political nonsense is over, good old-fashioned Yankee ingenuity will win out and save America. Here is an example of ingenuity at work: a foreman saw his laziest worker loafing again and asked, “Why are you carrying four bricks when all of the men are carrying eight?” The worker replied, “I guess it’s just because all of the other guys are too lazy to make two trips.” Two mothers were talking about their sons. One of them said, “My son is so slow, it takes him an hour and a half to watch 60 minutes.” Sometimes we think we are too late to learn and too old to forget. Would we be better Americans, neighbors, family members, or friends if we worked a little at both? If it appears I have chatted a lot and said nothing—wait till next week. If we go outside during the spring of the year and look at all the beauty, how could we not believe in God—“The Creator?” Looking through my eyes, I see the handy work of God everywhere. Whatchmacallits Nutmeg was popular as a spice in Europe long before Columbus “discovered” America. When European settlers came to North America, a taste for nutmeg came with them. It was very popular — and expensive — in Colonial America. Nutmeg is the seed pit of the plum-like fruit of the Myristica fragrans, an evergreen tree that once grew only on the largest of the Banda Islands of Indonesia. The red outside covering of the seed is the source of the spice mace. The nutmeg trade was so lucrative, it was the cause of a series of three “spice
wars” between the Dutch and British in the 17th Century. As a result of these wars, the Dutch retained control of the nutmeg island and the British took control of a Dutch settlement in America and renamed it New York. The British took temporary control of the Banda Islands during the Napoleonic wars and brought the trees to the island of Grenada and elsewhere. The national flag of Grenada, adopted in 1974, features a split open nutmeg fruit. Since Nutmeg comes in the form of a dried nut and is used

Valley Health Services’ Valley Bells go on the road The Valley Bells (the bell choir of Valley Health Services) is starting its fourth year of traveling throughout the valley entertaining at various organizations, events and nursing facilities. The group, under the direction of Jan Szuba, Assistant Director of Activities at VHS, features residents of VHS who enjoy spending time practicing and hitting the road to share their love of music with others. The Valley Bells have a general repertoire for all occasions including popular tunes, standards, patriotic songs and old favorites. Mrs. Szuba comments, “When we go on the road, we usually take between 12 and 18 VHS residents and Adult Day Health Care registrants along with 6 to 9 volunteer staff members to help in transporting. We travel in two VHS vans and our SUV. The choir members are thrilled to share one of their favorite activities with their peers in other facilities. The performances bring live entertainment to
residents of other nursing homes and a feeling of pride and accomplishment to our choir members. It is the best win-win situation ever!” Besides visiting the Masonic Home, the current Valley Bells schedule includes the following stops: Folts Homes on April 17 at 7:15 p.m.; Galinski Apartments at 6:30 p.m. on April 23; May 8 - Acacia Village at 6:30; May 17 - St. Johnsville Nursing Home at 6:30; May 24 - the Pines at 7; May 29 Focus at 7; June 4 Prindle Apartments at 6:30; June 12 Heritage Health Care at 7; June 21 - Little Falls Diamond Dawgs game (playing the National Anthem); and June 28 - Colonial Park at 7. located at 1972 State Highway 169, just a few short miles north of the village, is owned by the young couple Laura and Samuel Swarey. “We’ve been wanting to do this for a while,” Laura Swarey smiled. She and her sisters Elsie and Arie were very busy serving the many customers who attended the event, and were also running the deli at the grand opening. Susan Walsh was in the area from Delmar visiting her mother. “I can’t believe the variety the store has!” Walsh stated empathetically. “I am very impressed with the bolts of fabric that are available here!” Notions and threads of all colors were displayed along side of fabrics of rich jewel colors. The grocery is located adjacent to the Lakeside Country Cupboard, which is
owned by Swarey’s brother Henry. Gifts, elaborate clocks and fine glassware were on display there. Matt Kosel, who has relocated to the area from Montana, visited the Grand Opening along with his wife Clare and their 3 month-old daughter Rosemarie. “This is a good location for a grocery store,” Kosel said. “The prices look good, too.” The grocery offers bulk foods as well as pre-packaged. Ruth Garrison of Little Falls was also doing some shopping at the Little Falls Grocery. “They have a lot of nice things here,” Garrison said. “It’s a nice comfortable store and I plan to be a regular customer.” The Little Falls Grocery is open Monday-Saturday and is closed on Sundays. Celebrating Maple Weekend at Mud Road Sugar Shack by Elizabeth A. Tomlin “What a difference a year makes!” attests Vern Duesler III of Mud Road Sugar House. Duesler says that usually the maple sap begins to run in mid-March, which is when tapping the sugar maples normally begins to take place. However, Duesler reports that this year their first batch of maple syrup was processed a month early, on Feb. 12, and by March 22 they had already produced 575 gallons of Pride of New York maple syrup. This year marks Mud Road Sugar House’s 28th year of hosting an Open House & Family Day — where visitors are able to observe maple sap being boiled down to produce maple syrup, and may also sample and purchase maple products, including cotton candy. Duesler calculates that it takes four maple trees, at least 40 years of age to yield enough sap in six weeks — or about 40 gallons of sap — to produce 1 gallon of maple syrup. Although 564,000 gallons of maple syrup was produced by New York State Maple

The Car Care Council recommends 10 basic maintenance procedures to keep your car operating at its best for the long haul: 1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power
steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. 2. Check the hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear. 3. Check the battery and replace if necessary. Make sure the connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free. 4. Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change. 5. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without delay.
6. Schedule a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions. 7. Check the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons such as defrosting.
10. Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is
working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation.

Harden off transplants started earlier in spring before planting outdoors — gradually expose the young plants to outdoor
conditions of wind, brighter sunlight and lower moisture. Apply fertilizer to houseplants according to label directions as days grow brighter and longer and new growth begins. Foliage plants require relatively high nitrogen fertilizer, while blooming plants thrive on formulations that are higher in phosphorus. Keep Easter lily in a bright, cool location, out of direct sunlight. Water
as soil begins to dry. The yellow pollen-bearing anthers inside the flower can be removed by pinching to prevent staining of the petals. Five reasons native plants will like your garden by Annie S. White, Graduate Research Assistant, University of Vermont A native plant, by definition, has existed for thousands of years in a particular region. Without the help of gardeners with watering cans, bags of fertilizer, and bales of straw mulch, these plants naturally adapted to the conditions around them. A plant that is native to a particular region is naturally more tolerant of the local climate, rainfall trends, soils, insects, and diseases. These attributes can contribute to a lower-maintenance, longer-lasting, and environmentally friendly garden. Here are five reasons why native plants will like your garden as much as you like them. Native plants like your cold winter. One of the cardinal rules of gardening is to select plants that are tolerant of your local climate. For a perennial plant to reemerge every year, it must be tolerant of the date at which frost arrives in the fall, the cold winter temperatures, and when frosts end in the spring. The USDA’s hardiness zone map (planthardiness.ars.usda .gov) helps gardeners select plants suited to their climate, but there’s still a lot of trial-and-error when selecting non-native and hybrid plants. A safer investment is to choose native plants, which have already endured thousands of winters in your region. Native plants contribute to a beautiful and long-lasting landscape. Native plants like your rainfall. Rainfall is another important consideration when selecting plants for a garden. Se-
lecting plants that are adapted to the amount of rainfall, and to the seasonal timing of rainfall, will be more successful and require less maintenance. A native plant naturally is adapted to your rainfall conditions and, once established, generally doesn’t require additional watering. This will decrease the maintenance needs of the garden and also help to conserve water. Just remember that a native plant still needs to be planted in an appropriate location, which is similar to where it grows naturally. For example, a native wetland shrub, such as Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) won’t be happy on a dry knoll in your landscape; it must be planted in a consistently wet location, such as a rain garden, swale or pond edge. Native plants like your soil. Soil characteristics are often overlooked by gardeners, but are very important to plants. Some plants struggle in clay soils, which tend to hold water, while others struggle in sandy soils, which dry out quickly. A plant that is native to your region and soil type will be tolerant of your soil conditions. Many native plants have strategies for coping with the soil conditions. For example, native Purple Coneflowers (Echinacea purpurpea) have long tap roots that break up the texture of clay soil and are long enough to avoid rotting from the clay’s moisture. Native plants like your soil fertility. For thousands of years before humans began gardening, native plants grew, flow-
ered, and fruited without the help of fertilizers. It’s no different today. In fact, the outcome of fertilizing native plants is often undesirable. It can result in tall plants with many leaves, but few flowers. The fertilized plants sometimes can’t support their own weight and will topple easily in a wind or rain storm. By planting native plants you can avoid fertilizers, save your time and money, and avoid potential water pollution from runoff. Native plants like your insects. Native plants have shared the landscape with insects for centuries. They are often an important food for beneficial insects, while they are less desirable to some of our exotic insect pests. For example, Woodland Phlox (Phlox divaricata) is a nectar source for native bees and butterflies, but are left alone by the pesky Japanese beetle. Save your time, money and the environment by planting native plants and avoiding the use of insecticides. All of these attributes make native plants valuable to the sustainability of your garden. A landscape full of plants that are adapted to the local temperatures, rainfall, soils, fertility, and insects will be long-lasting and require fewer resources, and less of your time to maintain. You can sit back and enjoy your beautiful landscape and all the birds and butterflies it attracts. Fertilize woody plants before new growth begins. Two pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet should be sufficient. Complete pruning chores, removing dead and injured branches first. Apply a prebloom, multipurpose orchard spray to fruit trees. Remove winter coverings from roses, but keep mulch nearby for protection from late freezes. Prune and fertilize as needed. Apply pre-emergent herbicide to control crabgrass in lawns. Approximate dates of application are April 1 to April 20 in southern Indiana and April 21 to May 10 in northern Indiana. GARDEN (Flowers, vegetables and small fruits) Plant seeds of cool-season crops directly in the garden, as soon as soil dries enough to be worked. When squeezed, soil should crumble instead of forming a ball. Cool-season crops that can be direct-seeded include peas, lettuce,
spinach, carrots, beets, turnips, parsnips and Swiss chard. Plant transplants of cool-season crops, such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi and onions. Plant or transplant asparagus and rhubarb crowns. For best plant establishment, do not harvest until the third year after planting. Plant sections of certified, disease-free potato “seed” tubers. Allow foliage of springflowering bulbs to remain in place after blooms fade. Leaves manufacture the food reserves, which
are then stored in the bulb for a repeat showing next year. Plant hardy perennials, such as daylilies and delphiniums. Start tuberous begonias and caladiums indoors for transplanting to garden later. Remove winter mulch from strawberries, but keep mulch handy in case late frosts are predicted and to help keep weeds under control. Plant or transplant strawberries, raspberries and other small fruit. Prune grape vines to remove dead or weakened limbs, and repair support trellises as needed.

Choose the right homeowner’s insurance for your lifestyle (ARA) — Are you a firsttime home buyer? An established homeowner? An empty nester? Whatever stage of life you’re in, it pays to make sure you have the right insurance - and you’re not paying for coverage you don’t need. many belongings. You’ll need insurance for the structure of your home, as well as against common disasters, such as fire, severe storms, vandalism and theft. Extra liability insurance is a good idea in the event someone is hurt in your home. “Remember to add coverage as you make improvements costing more than $5,000 or add TVs, computers, stereos and furniture to your home’s inventory,” said Valinotti. When you’re an established homeowner You’ve moved into a

Make a home inventory video to document your personal property and keep the video in a safe place away from your home, like in a bank safety deposit box. “Established homeowners should consider buying an insurance policy ‘floater’ or ‘rider’ to cover these special items,” Valinotti said.
When you’re an empty nester Not only have your children moved out to work or attend school, you’ve scaled down your lifestyle. Valinotti suggests that now is the time to reassess the value of your home and your possessions. “If your children have taken their things with them, such as furniture, laptops or televisions, you may need less coverage than you did before,” he says. Thinking about starting a home business now that the kids are gone? If you work at home, you may
need a supplemental liability policy that covers your work-related activities. If you decide that you’re finished with your homeowner responsibilities and want to rent an apartment or condominium, remember: You still need insurance coverage. Valinotti recommends talking with your insurance agent about what protection is essential for your specific stage of life. “That way, you’ll be sure to have enough coverage to return to your current lifestyle should you experience a major loss,” he said.

If I spend too much money, I overdraw my checking account. If I don’t spend all my money I have some extra for future expenses. Alice Henneman from the University of Nebraska Extension takes the same approach when talking about your “calorie salary”. If you eat more calories than your body needs you put on weight. If you eat fewer calories you lose weight. To help explain her concept Alice has developed four steps to “budget”
those calories. $tep 1 – Stay Within Your Calorie Budget Your daily calorie needs are based on your age, gender, height, weight and physical activity level. The more physically active you are, the more calories you can take in. The long held wisdom about calories is that it takes 3500 extra calories to put on a pound and 3500 less calories to lose a pound. If you want to lose a pound a week, eat 500 less calories a day or burn up 500 extra calories in physical activity. Another way of looking at this is to think in 100 calorie increments. An extra 100 calories a day can add up to 10 pounds
a year. Some simple 100 calorie counts include: 2 tablespoons sugar, jam, jelly or syrup; 1 tablespoon butter; 1/3 of a large doughnut or 2/3 can of regular soft drink. It can be very easy to get 500 extra calories a day without being aware of it. $tep 2 – Choose the Most Value for Your Calorie $alary Think of food choices in terms of getting more for your buck. Does your food choice provide vitamins, minerals, and other nutritional benefits? Are there extra fats, sugars and salt in the foods that provide little or no nutritional benefit? These foods may contribute more calories than you
Credit card robo calls bothering you? BBB cautions consumers and offers tips to avoid falling prey BUFFALO, NY — Millions of Americans receive a steady string of automated telephone calls from “Rachel” at Cardholder Services, who claims your “credit card interest rates may increase” or wants to help you “lower your credit card rates.” The Better Business Bureau warns Upstate New York consumers these robocalls often come from criminals who are trying to obtain your credit card information in order to use it for their own criminal enterprise. Calls can go to home numbers and cell phone numbers. If you press “1? as instructed to get a person — you are connected with someone who wants to ask questions about your credit cards. After the representative verifies the consumer’s name, phone and address, the representative then asks for the consumer’s credit card number. “Savvy consumer know if this was truly was a call from their credit card company, the representative would already have their credit card number on file,” said David Polino, Better Business Bureau President. “We would like everyone who receives these calls to do as these savvy consumers do — hang up! These calls continue because they’re profitable for con artists. It’s important for consumers to know that most robo callers will hang up when consumers ask them questions.” BBB warns these kinds of calls generally begin with recorded messages that include statements like: “There is a problem with your account,” or “Your account is in good standing however it is urgent that you contact us concerning your eligibility for lowering your interest” or, “This is our final attempt to reach you since you’ve not responded to our other calls to discuss your credit card debt.” Automated messages invariably do not include the name of the company, but may claim to be with Card Services or Card Holder Services in an attempt to dupe consumers into thinking their credit card company was contacting them. If consumers are caught by a “live operator” they would likely hear a sales pitch where representative ask for credit card numbers and claim they can lower interest rates or they can help to prevent an interest rate hike. BBB warns consumers against these traps and reminds them that many credit card companies will negotiate better rates for consumers who meet their criteria if they contact them on their own. Unfortunately some consumers report to the BBB they’ve paid hundreds of dollars and in some cases over $1,000 — to have the ‘credit card firm’ contact their credit card company and negotiate lower rates. Consumers simply don’t need to pay any company a thousand dollars to negotiate lower rates on their behalf. BBB offers the following advice for consumers who receive calls from companies offering to lower their interest rate: • Never give personal information, including Social Security, bank or credit card numbers, over the phone to an unknown telemarketer. Always research the company with the BBB by reviewing their Business Review at www.bbb.org. • When considering any company offering any type of financial assistance, insist on getting a contract in which all terms and conditions are clearly explained before signing up or providing credit card or other payment information. • U.S. consumers can place their home phone number on the federal Do Not Call list by visiting www.donotcall.gov. If the consumer’s number is already on the list but continues to receive telemarketing calls — or is receiving robocalls on a cell phone — he or she can use the same Web site to report the incident to the FTC. While the Do Not Call is helpful, it’s not perfect. Consumers will be happy to know help could be on the way. The Federal Trade Commission announced an enforcement action on last month that may curtail these bothersome and malicious calls. For additional information you can trust or to find more consumer advice, start with trust at bbb.org.

In each of these three cases, the original nutritional level of the food hasn’t changed, but the number of calories you take in has increased. $tep 3 – Consider the “True Cost” of Poor Nutrition Foods that do not pro-
vide any nutrition value, even though they taste good, can put our health and our money at risk. Reducing the amount of less nutrient dense foods you eat can save you calories and money. Researchers are continuing to find links between the food choices a person makes and having a healthy life. The above mentioned foods; whole grain, fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy product and lean meats may contribute to your general good health and possibly reduce your need for certain medications. Also, foods contain additional substances that aren’t in supplements or pills. For people who use the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH Eating Plan) clinical studies have shown: • Fruit and vegetable consumption lowers blood pressure • Low-fat dairy and high calcium foods along with a diet high in fruits and vegetables further lower blood pressure • Even greater reductions in blood pressure occur when sodium in-
