The Boy Scouts of America believes and, through nearly a century of experience, understands that helping youth puts us on a path toward a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society. Scouting, with programs for young men and women, helps meet these six essential needs of the young people growing up in our society: Mentoring, Lifelong Learning, Faith Traditions, Serving Others Healthy Living, and Building Character.

Hello Again, At this time, Fred and Sylvia Lee are on their journey back home from the sunshine state. The following is from a September 2011 Hello Again, and will hopefully serve as a reminder that the Palatine Corridor Dream is still alive. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. Next week we will return to normal with new stories and ideas. ·············································································· I am going to attempt to make a serious business point in the next several paragraphs. Some of the paragraphs were borrowed from an earlier “Hello Again,” not exactly word for word. After these paragraphs we will try to put forth a rough outline of a plan. In an earlier edition of “Hello Again” we chatted about a dream, a dream that led New York State to become the Great Empire State. One of the greatest industrial powerhouses in the Western Hemisphere — certainly the leader in the United States. The dream: Governor Dewitt Clinton’s dream was to build a super water transportation system connecting the Atlantic Ocean at New York City — up the Hudson River to the Albany area, then on westward across New York State to the center of the United States via a system of canals, rivers and lakes. When the great dream was completed it inherited several names. Clinton’s Ditch, Clinton’s Folly, Barge Canal, the Erie Canal; the end result caused one of the greatest industrial explosions recorded in history. Factories, with support businesses, popped up along the new barge canal creating one of the most important and powerful industrial zones in the world. A tradesman, or laborer, could lose his place of employment and find a new one the same day. A young business-minded person could start a new business. Hotels, restaurants, houses, churches, higher education institutions, villages with parks, retailers, farmers, roads with bridges all grew out of Clinton’s dream. They dreamed and built factories, huge and small. Some became giants creating a wonderful, prosperous way of life. That was the Mohawk Valley. Now! Most of the factories are gone, leaving behind one great question: “What happened?” I believe many answers could be presented. New York State, and federal government interference, labor unions growing too large and powerful demanding more from the factories than the marketplace could bear, taxes, businesses failing to change with the changing times; the dreamers grew old and died. Sure, all of these played a part but I believe what really happened … men and women stopped dreaming, planning, building. Possibly the banks found other, easier ways to lend money and made it nearly impossible for new and even old established businesses to borrow needed funds. People just stopped doing what worked, stopped dreaming, planning, and acting. What happened? The once great commercial water passageway, which passed through the very heart of hundreds of our villages, creating thousands upon thousands of business opportunities has been reduced to a basic non-commercial venture. A great river for sport fishing and pleasure boating. It does still provide a passageway for larger boats to travel to Lake Ontario and beyond. Now we have a great business enemy called the New York State Thomas E. Dewey Thruway. Cars, trucks, buses full of money spending people can get on the Thruway and travel from the greatest city in the western hemisphere, New York City — travel north to Albany, our capital, and drive west across the entire state into Northern Pennsylvania and never have a business or personal comfort reason to visit any one of our villages along its pathway. They can buy gas, food, enjoy comfort stations, rest

Original Valley PENNYSAVER • April 21, 2012

Page 7

areas, and never leave Thruway controlled property. They do leave behind engine smoke and some road noise. So what can be done? Rather, what can we do? Where is all of this negative chatter leading? Simply stated — it’s time for another new big and powerful dream — tag it “Fred’s Folly” if you choose. Let’s dream together. Right here under our noses we have one of the greatest gold mine potentials and opportunities imaginable. A gold mine so big and endless it would be impossible to place an estimate of its potential value. It’s ours to tap into. Remember, “When one door closes, another will open.” That one door closed and effectively robbed our area of tons of business and now it can be used to build our gold mine. The New York State Thomas E. Dewey Thruway. Every hour of every day — 365 days yearly — cars, buses, campers, trucks by the thousands drive through our valley heading either east or west. Very few stop here. Why? Why? There is no reason for them to stop. Cooperstown has the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the baseball Dream Fields which combined, draws staggering crowds along with the Farmer’s Museum, Fennimore House, opera, the Otesaga Hotel, modern motels, Bassett Hospital, and comfortable bed & breakfast establishments. Frankenmuth, Michigan has Bronner’s Christmas Store, which employs over 150 employees year round. Saratoga has the racetrack. Hershey, Pennsylvania has the famous candy company tour. This listing could go on and on — causing employment and business success elsewhere. It’s a staggering and possibly a shameful fact that our Mohawk Valley basically offers nothing to drill into the largest potential gold mine which is already right here. The Thomas E. Dewey Thruway. O.K. Let’s start dreaming — first a dream and then a plan and then a start. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

A Christmas Store — like Bronner’s. An American Doll store A Teddy Bear store — possibly with it’s own manufacturing A group of factory outlet stores A large campground along the Mohawk Fill up that giant hole in the wall (formerly Ames) at the Dutchtown Plaza in Palatine Bridge with a discount store. A summertime or year-round Christian music and tent ministry

There must be hundreds of types of stores that if built between Palatine Bridge and St. Johnsville could and would draw people off the thruway. How about a Nashville type music hall, square dance Hall of Fame? Believe it or not, some areas such as Oneonta, NY have two colleges. Remember the movie? “If you build it, they will come.” Just think. Get off the thruway in Canajoharie — visit Sharon Springs — or over the river bridge and visit our new dream area between Palatine Bridge and St. Johnsville and continue the westerly trip by re-entering the thruway in Little Falls. The reverse is true too — off at Little Falls, on at Canajoharie. We could and should take advantage of the Thruway and turn our beautiful Mohawk Valley into a thriving business mecca. Even our kids would choose to live and prosper here. More next week — please help think — dream, pray, and when the times comes, act. Remember the bible verse. “We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.” PlanDream-Pray and act. Fred Lee and the Lee Family

Whatchmacallits Since about the time humans developed the concept of private property, people have been looking for ways to protect what’s theirs. Animals, especially dogs, have been used for guarding property for thousands of years. These furry burglar alarms would rouse their humans and alert them if anything was amiss. In 386 B.C., Roman soldier and statesman Marcus Manlius was alerted to the presence of intruders by a flock of geese. It seems the intruders snuck past sleeping human guards and dogs, but couldn’t slip past the honkers. An English inventor by the name of Tildesley is credited with creating a door alarm in the early 1700s that used a set of chimes mechanically linked to the door lock. A gun shot can be an effective alarm, but before the

introduction of the percussion cap in 1839, few guns were made simply to sound an alarm. The percussion cap brought with it many small and simply made burglar alarms. Nearly all were made to be fastened to a door jamb or window sill and to fire when the door or window was opened. A spring-backed ham-

mer was tripped when the door or window moved, exploding the cap. The percussion window alarm shown here was the creation of Simeon Coon of Ithaca, NY, who received a patent in 1857 for an improved percussion alarm. This example is owned by Willis “Skip” Barshied Jr.

ATV registration

An ATV must be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) if it is operated anywhere in New York State, including on the owner’s property. A purchaser is exempt from registration when the ATV will be used exclusively: outside of New York State; at special events; for agricultural purposes; or for snow plowing other than for-hire. Dealers must have the purchaser complete and sign a “Declaration of Exemption From Snowmobile or AllTerrain Vehicle Registration” (RV-6). Unless you qualify for an exemption from registration, you cannot take delivery from an authorized dealer until after the ATV is registered.

How to buy antiques and collectibles by Robert W. Lewis, eHow Contributor Always buy antiques and collectible that you love. Buying antiques and collectibles is a fun and rewarding endeavor. Un-fortunately, many wouldbe collectors are intimidated by the very prospect of heading to an antique store or an antiques show. Typical reasons include the fear of haggling, the fear of paying too much and the fear of buying a lemon. Whether you are buying for the fun of collecting or for decorating your home, a few basic consumer skills will help you buy with confidence and success. Does this Spark an idea? 1 Determine your specific needs. If you need a table, for instance, measure the space in your home

and write it down. There’s nothing more frustrating than finding a lovely piece and not being able to make a decision because you don’t know whether it will fit your space. 2. Create a budget. Each project or acquisition should be guided by what a particular project or object is worth to you. Stick to the budget when buying and you’ll avoid regrets later. 3. Inspect each piece carefully. Condition is key to value, whether you’re buying furniture, knickknacks or an objet d’art. Look for missing pieces, excessive wear, repairs and alterations. It’s OK to buy items with flaws, but you should buy them with full knowledge ahead of time. 4. Ask the dealer specific questions about the object, such as its age, how the dealer knows that age and whether the item has damage. 5. Ask whether the price stated is the best price. Expect dealers at stores and antique shows to discount their prices by about 10 percent. 6. Counteroffer if you think the price is still too high. 7. Make a deal or walk away. 8. Ask the dealer if he’ll guarantee the authenticity of the piece. 9. Take the seller’s business card or put yourself on his mailing list if you’ve had a good experience. Source: eHow.com

Collecting by Larry Cox California Faience bowl Q: I recently received a California Faience bowl from a relative who told me it was from the 1920s. I can’t find anything about the company in any of my reference books. Can you help me? — Laura, Earth City, MO A: California Faience was a brand that was started in about 1920 by William V. Bragdon and Chauncy R. Thomas at their tile shop in Berkeley, CA. Pieces of their pottery are generally marked “California Faience” with a die stamp and are quite collectible. Typical prices are ashtray with stylized dog design in orange matt, $225; and burgundy gloss bowl, $250. Q: I have a set of Elsie and Elmer coffee cups that were given away as premiums by the Borden Company. They are mint. — Milton, Albuquerque, NM A: Elsie was introduced during the 1930s as a mascot for the Borden Company. In 1940 she “married” Elmer, who began promoting Borden’s glue. Together they had Beulah. Elmer and Elsie appeared on dozens of prod-

ucts, including, of course, your coffee cups. I suspect your set of four are worth in the $12 to $20 range. Q: I have a set of cuff links that originally belonged to a riverboat captain who worked on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The set is in a leather case stamped “Currier & Ives by Squire” and are quite elaborate. Do you have any idea of what they might be worth? — Michael, Ormond Beach, FL A: Eugene Klompus is an expert and collector. His contact information is P.O. Box 5970, Vernon Hills, NJ 60061; genek@justcufflinks.com; and www.justcufflinks.com. Q: I have a pocket watch that is marked “I.W. Co., Springfield, ILL.” The watch is quite heavy and requires a key to engage the spring. What can you tell me about it? — Dean, Brutus, MN A: The Illinois Watch Company was founded in 1872 in Springfield, Ill. In 1928, the company was purchased by the Hamilton Watch Company of Lancaster, PA. To determine the value of your timepiece, you should show it to a competent jeweler. Collecting by Larry Cox Political stickpin Q: I have a political stickpin issued during Barry Goldwater’s presidential campaign of 1964. It is in perfect condition. — Theresa, Surprise, AZ A: There were dozens of Goldwater pins issued during his campaign. Some of the most popular ones were a red and blue button with a white arrow pointing to the right, “AU H20 1964,” and an elephant with Goldwater’s trademark black eye glasses. Most of the Goldwater buttons sell in the $5 to $25 range, according to “Warman’s Political Collectibles: Identification and Price Guide” by Dr. Enoch L. Nappen (Krause, $24.99). Q: In 1991, Kenner had a toy line called the Savage Mondo Blitzers, which was pulled from the shelves after being available for only a very short time. It seemed that parents were upset, not only by the characters looks but also their names. I have four of the sets of four and wonder if they are worth anything. — Ruth, Orlando, FL A: The Toy Stable has one of the largest inventories of the Savage Mondo Blitzers figures. They seem to sell for less than $5 each, for example, Bad Audience, $4.99, Bad to the Bone, $2.99, and Aping Wound, $4.99. You can check out others at its website, www.toystable.com. The contact address is 2917 Military Road East, Tacoma, WA 78445. Q: I have a set of 13 postcards from the New York World’s Fair of 1939. How much do you think they are worth? — Josie, Ormond Beach, FL A: The New York World’s Fair was one of this country’s most popular such events. Souvenirs from that fair are fairly common and quite collectible. I contacted several collectors, and they seem to agree that your postcards are probably worth in the $15 to $25 range. Invest in your floors for dividends down the road

(NAPSA) — When you get down to it, a new floor can really raise a home’s resale value. In fact, according to the annual Cost vs. Value Report, published by The National Association of Realtors, installing new floors in your home adds dividends to your bottom line when it comes time to sell. Fortunately, new flooring is more accessible and affordable than ever before. To help, the World Floor Covering Association offers these insights on how to find the right floor for you: 1. Love it. Bring a sample home and be sure what you love today will still hold your

affections years later. 2. Wear and tear. Think about what kind of a beating the floor will have to take. 3. Money. Consider your budget, the overall cost of the job and value of your house. 4. Consider: • What rooms get the new flooring? • What are their sizes? • Do you have children or pets? • How many people live in the home? • How important is comfort, ease of maintenance, appearance, durability, adding value to the home and price? 5. What kind? • Wood: Hardwood can withstand both time and growing fam-

ilies. New surface treatments offer an unlimited selection of colors and finishes; a wide assortment of formats including planks, medallions, inlays, borders and tiles; and increased durability. • Tile: The design possibilities are nearly endless while cleaning and maintenance are virtually effortless. Almost any look, including hardwood, leather, stone, marble, travertine and cement, can be achieved affordably with tile. Tile is a great choice for wet rooms and rooms that get a lot of wear and tear. • Carpet: Carpet today is stain resistant with high-quality

padding, velvety soft fibers, built-in odor eaters and great designs. Carpet is relatively inexpensive; soft, quiet and warm underfoot; installs easily over most surfaces; can hide subfloor irregularities; and offers more options for color, texture, tone, pattern and hue than any other floor covering. • Laminate: Laminate flooring was created to replicate other flooring materials, such as stone and wood, at a fraction of the cost. Laminate floors are fairly low maintenance and don’t need waxing, oiling or staining. For more information see www.WFCA.org or call 800-624-6880.

An easy way to improve your home’s value (StatePoint) — Not all home improvements are created equally if you’re looking for a clear return on investment. But according to the National Association Realtors, a bathroom upgrade is a good bet, yielding a 64.1 percent return on what you spend. And to do it well an architect can help, says the American Institute of Architects. He or she will

work with you to determine a plan of action for meeting your goal. It could be a simple change, such as adding flex lighting for ambience, or more complex, like extensive remodeling, to completely redo the space. The nose knows Odors are the number one turnoff when buying a house. Smoking and pets are the worst offenders. Keep in mind that many people are allergic to certain scents

and deodorizers, so as the seller don’t overspray or burn candles. Opening windows and baking cookies are better alternatives. Don’t forget to serve the treats to avoid disappointment.

Curb appeal Don’t forget that first impressions are extremely important. Home buyers may not bother to look at an unkempt house. Clean up the yard,

remove growing plants from gutters and fix those saggy doors. You don’t have to spend a lot of money but you should spend the effort.

Don’t hover If possible, leave the house during showings. Prospective buyers may feel awkward opening doors or making comments when

you are in the room. If you are doing the showing, be available but give them space. Also, don’t make the buyers fell pressured give them all the time they need to look.

Springer’s, Inc. Open House & FFA Barbecue deemed “huge success” by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Ray Rath and Bud Gross of Fairfield, NY, are not new customers to Springer’s in St. Johnsville. Both are satisfied customers who came to “look around” at the recent Open House — and to enjoy the barbecue provided by the Mohawk Valley FFA. “I’ve done business with Springer’s for years,” reported Gross. “They provide excellent service.” Gross and Rath looked over a new T1530 New Holland compact, utility tractor. “This is a nice tractor!” Gross declared as he examined the engine. Boasting 45 horsepower and 4x4, plus available implements, it was easy to see why he was impressed. Springer’s, Inc, features New Holland equipment at their Rt. 5, St. Johnsville location, where the Open House was held. “Our annual Open House was a huge success,” said Ron Young, Sales Specialist. “We would like to thank all of our customers for making this Open House successful,” Young said. “We look forward

Mohawk Valley FFA members Kait Isaac, Donna Boyer, Stephanie Arndt, Gus Shaut, Ashley Chapman, FFA Advisor Mike Settle, Sabryna Chapman, Kyle Hayes, Robert Christman and Austin Valleau worked at the Open House cooking and serving up a chicken barbecue dinner and fundraiser. to helping them in the future. In this strong agricultural community we know that the farmers keep the economy going and we try to offer the best pricing and financing available to keep them in business. We have a large selection of equipment to get the job done for all of our customers — big or small.” Frank and Ellis Springer established DR Springer’s in 1946, acquired the New

Holland Franchise in 1949, and built the St. Johnsville facility in 1982. With agricultural equipment in demand in Central New York, Springer’s was expanded to Oneonta, and in 1997 a store was opened there. Jay Schuurman purchased the Springer’s business in 2004 and also established a store in Richfield Springs. Tractors are only one piece of equipment found at Springer’s, where everything from augers and post-hole diggers, backhoe attachments and loaders, chippers, windrower and swather implements, utility vehicles, and much more are available. “In store” sales are going on all of the time, with 10 percent off all year to qualifying customers. “I would also like to thank the Mohawk Valley FFA for their hard work and preparation of the chicken barbecue,” Young stated. “The food was great!” According to FFA Advisor Mike Settle the chicken barbecue was very popular with the Open House attendees, and they sold out early. Profits from the barbecue will be used for the FFA members towards attending the NY State FFA Convention and FFA Camp. Contact Springer’s at 518568-2016.

Long time Mohawk Valley FFA Advisor Mike Settle to retire by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Most folks in the agriculture community in the Mohawk Valley are familiar with the name and face of Mike Settle. Known throughout the Valley for his work with kids — and the Mohawk Valley FFA in particular — he is also a respected dairy farmer and trusted member of the Montgomery County Farm Bureau. Settle and the Mohawk Valley FFA are frequently seen at agricultural events throughout the Mohawk Valley. Whether it’s a county Farm Day/Sundae on the Farm event or an Open House, you will see them selling their BBQ Chicken dinners or educating people about the benefits of the FFA for middle and high school students interested in leadership in agriculture. Settle, who has been in dairy farming most of his life with his wife Lorinda and their two children, has been with St. Johnsville School as an Agriculture Instructor and FFA advisor for 15 years. “I always thought my heart was in dairy farming,” Settle said, “but I found that I was always looking for ways to work with kids, whether it was with 4-H or church youth groups.” When Settle’s farm was in transition, he decided to go into teaching, and was hired for an agricul-

ture position at St. Johnsville Central School. “I did not realize until that point, what a great organization the FFA was,” Settle admits. “I now know that there is no greater opportunity available for high school kids than what the FFA can offer them — if they are willing to take advan-

New York State’s people and economy. Last spring the group was recognized by the NYS Assembly and introduced during the Assembly Session by Assemblyman George Amedore. According to Mohawk Valley FFA President Robert Christman, “Mr. Settle is a prime leader and a great advisor. He has

Mike Settle, Mohawk Valley FFA Advisor of 15 years, will retire on June 30. “I know my FFA involvement will continue, just not as official advisor,” Settle says. Photo by Elizabeth A. Tomlin tage of it.” Settle does more as an advisor than just teach an agricultural program. For the past several years he has taken his group to the Capital Days in Albany to set up a display informing congressmen and other legislative affiliates about the FFA program and the effect agriculture has on

a lot of knowledge about many different subjects. He always tries his hardest to help all of our members in any way he can.” Christman says he would like to take after Settle “as a responsible chapter leader and eventually becoming a FFA Advisor.” Chapter VicePresident Stephanie

Arndt feels the same way about Settle but is also concerned about how his leaving the program will impact the Mohawk Valley FFA. “Mr. Settle is an amazing advisory,” Arndt says. “He does whatever he can to make sure that we are learning the importance of agriculture, while having fun! His favorite quote is ‘where would we be without agriculture? Naked and hungry!’ I think that Mr. Settle retiring is going to highly impact the Mohawk Valley FFA. He has been the advisor for a very long time, and his leaving will devastate our organization.” However, Settle is determined to continue to give the program his full support, even once he has retired. “I fully intend to stay involved with the FFA,” Settled insists. “I know my FFA involvement will continue, just not as official advisor.” Settle says he will support the next person who takes over his role as Ag teacher and FFA advisor. However, Arndt questions whether the FFA will be continued. “I am not even sure that the organization will still be functioning after this year because of so many extracurricular activities being cut in schools,” Arndt stated. Settle’s retirement date is scheduled for June 30, 2012.

R-12 refrigerant, trade named DuPont Freon, has been replaced by R-134a. Touted as being environmentally safer than its predecessor, R-134a has been standard since ‘94. If your older vehicle needs major repairs to the air conditioning

system you can expect to replace refrigerant and the oil in the compressor in addition to the old components. You also may need to install a retrofit conversion. Do not allow anyone to mix refrigerants. They’re not interchangeable. You can-

not add R-134a to your older air conditioner without first flushing the system. Further, according to the Car Care Council, some substitutes are volatile mixtures of propane, butane and flammable hydrocarbons.

Summer is the season for major car-battery problems. Heat, not cold, shortens battery life, says the Car Care Council. Excessive heat and overcharging are the two main reasons for shortened battery life. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, this damaging the internal structure of the battery. A malfunctioning component in the charging system, usually the voltage regulator, allows too high a charging rate. That’s slow death for a battery. True, there are more road service calls in cold weather for dead batteries that cause starting failure. That’s when a battery’s output is diminished because of sluggish electro-chemical action that gives the battery its power. Also, colder temperatures increase thickness of the engine oil, making the engine harder to turn over. These factors lead to harder starting. “An average of one out of four vehicles gets a new battery every year,” said Rich White, executive

director of the Car Care Council. “Sooner or later all batteries have to be replaced, but having to so prematurely can involve more than the cost of a road service call and a new battery, it can be inconvenient as well.” To get the most life out of a battery, White suggests the following: Be sure the electrical system is charging at the correct rate; overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as undercharging. If your battery is the type that needs to be topped off, check ity regularly, especially in hot weather. Add distilled water when necessary. Always replace a battery with one that’s rated at least as high as the one originally specified. Keep the top of the battery clean. Dirt becomes a conductor, which drains battery power. Further, as corrosion accumulates on battery terminals it becomes an insulator, inhibiting current flow.

Automotive Car Care Council introduces new custom service schedule for National Car Care Month r April is National Car Care Month and, in celebration, the nonprofit Car Care Council has introduced a new customizable fonline service schedule, free to all motorists throughout the country. The personalized schedule and e-mail reminder service, powered by DriverSide.com, can be customized by gmotorists at the council’s newly-introduced w e b s i t e , www.carcare.org. “Basic car care can go a long way toward improving the safety and dependability of your vehicle, plus it helps avoid costly repairs down the road,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “By utilizing our new customized service interval schedand e-mail yule reminder service, motorists will have a free resource to help them drive smart, save money and make informed decisions.” Results of community car care events held throughout the country in 2011 show that many consumers are neglecting their cars, with more than eight out of 10 vehicles fail-

ing at least one component of the vehicle inspection process. “Chances are if you own a car, it needs some work. National Car Care Month in April is the perfect time to focus on your vehicle’s maintenance needs,” said White. “Whether you do it yourself or take your car to a professional service technician, following a preventative maintenance schedule will help keep your vehicle safe, dependable and on the road longer. And our new system will give you the reminders that you need to stay on top of this maintenance.” To help consumers become more comfortable with the auto service and repair process, the Car Care Council also recently introduced a new video entitled “Auto Service and Repair: What to Expect” that provides a wealth of information on such topics as finding the right auto repair facility, what to expect at the shop and what questions to ask. The video also covers the real truth about consumer rights and the manufacturer’s warranty.

BBB advice on giving to tornado relief charities Upstate New Yorkers seeing the devastation wreaked by recent tornadoes may react with generous gifts of time and money, as many have traditionally responded to disasters throughout the world. But even when needs are close to home, givers should take steps to assure themselves that their donations will go to legitimate and reputable charities and relief efforts that have the capability to help victims, cautions the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance. “Despite long experience in giving for major natural disasters, and with the desire to quickly help those in need, people sometimes forget to heed advice that’s relevant to all charitable giving,” said Art Taylor, President and CEO of the BBB Wise Giving Alliance. “In the present situation, BBB advises donors especially to learn about what individual charities are doing and the time frame of their work. Donors who know what to expect

from the charities they support are less likely to question the benefit of their gifts.” BBB Wise Giving Alliance offers the following five tips to help Americans decide where to direct donations: Take time to check out the charity. The best way to avoid being disappointed in helping Storm Relief Charities is to find out more about the charity before making the donation. Unfortunately, most people don’t. Donors should review the charity’s website and go to third party sites such as the BBB Wise Giving Alliance (www.bbb.org/ charity) to learn more about the charity and verify its accountability. Identify what stage of relief the charity intends to provide. There are three general stages to relief efforts. Find out which stage the charity is intending to address. The Emergency Response stage involves immediate assistance and rescue needs and takes place within the first days after

the storm. Next, Disaster Relief occurs in the first month and provides clothing and temporary shelter for displaced families. Finally, the Recovery Stage can last over a year and involves clean up, repair and/or rebuilding homes, and other long-term recovery needs. Find out if the charity is providing direct aid or raising money for other groups. Some charities may be raising money to pass along to relief organizations. If so, you may want to consider “avoiding the middleman” and giving directly to charities that have a presence in the region. Or, at a minimum, check out the ultimate recipients of these donations to ensure the organizations are equipped to effectively provide aid. Be wary of claims that 100 percent of donations will assist relief victims. Despite what an organization might claim, charities have fund raising and administrative costs. Even a credit card donation will involve, at a min-

imum, a processing fee. If a charity claims that 100 percent of collected funds will be assisting disaster victims, the truth is that the organization is still probably incurring fund raising and administrative expenses. They may use some of their other funds to pay this, but the expenses will still be incurred. Verify if the charity is registered to solicit donations in your state. Most states require charities to register with a state agency (usually the Attorney General’s office or the Secretary of State’s office) in order to solicit charitable contributions. Contact your appropriate state agency to determine if the soliciting disaster relief charity is properly registered. Watch out for newly created entities that do not have a track record and/or experience in providing disaster relief. The BBB recognizes mobile giving as a critical tool for charities to raise much-needed funds, especially when disaster strikes. In order to give

donors the most trustworthy and safe option for quick “text to give” donations, the BBB Wise Giving Alliance recently joined forces with Mobile Giving Foundation to create the BBB Mobile Giving Foundation, a cobranded effort to grow the mobile giving channel, strengthen mobile giving industry standards and accountability, assure donor confi-

dence, and reinforce nonprofit acceptance of the mobile giving medium. If you are considering a mobile gift the BBB advises donors to indentify a charity with a proven track record of successfully using ‘text to give’ channels. by Charlie Nardozzi, Horticulturist and Leonard Perry, UVM Extension Horticulturist Hardening off seedlings before planting

outside, checking for tent caterpillars, and reseeding lawns are some of the gardening tips for this month. Be sure to harden off

indoor-grown seedlings before setting them into the garden. Acclimate plants to outdoor conditions over the course of at least a week, and preferably two, by gradually increasing the amount of time you leave them outdoors. This includes both exposure to cooler temperatures and sunlight. Put them in the shade for a few days to adjust to the brighter sun outdoors. Plunging them directly from indoors into the full sun often causes sunburn — a rapid bleaching and dying of foliage. If you’ve taken advantage of this early spring by planting your container gardens already, be sure to protect them from a spring frost by moving them indoors on chilly nights or covering them with a floating row cover. If you haven’t planted containers yet, consider adding a water absorbing product (sold as this in garden stores) to the soil first. You only need a little (follow label directions), with the result being you’ll need to water

less often as plants grow. This kind of addition is especially useful in hanging baskets that tend to dry out quickly. Check apple, cherry, and other fruit trees for nests of tent caterpillars. Blast low-lying nests with water to destroy them, or knock them to the ground and destroy them. A spray of Bt will kill emerging caterpillars but is not toxic to beneficial insects, birds, or humans. If you want to move some spring-blooming bulbs to another spot, wait until the foliage has turned yellow, then carefully dig them up and let them dry in a shady spot for a few days. Store the bulbs in a cool, dry place for the summer until it’s time to plant them in fall. Or you can replant them then and allow the foliage to continue to die back. This is needed for nutrients to go from the leaves back into the bulbs for the coming season. Don’t have a place to plant them yet? Then you can “heel” them in, planting in a shallow trench, or pot

them for holding. When you transplant annual flowers and veggies, don’t try to loosen the root balls. With such a small root mass, a plant is easily set back if many roots are damaged. With only a summer in which to grow, these plants need to hit the ground running with no delays. Before reseeding bare spots in the lawn, spread 1 to 2 inches of compost over the areas and firm it down. Then sow grass seed. Sprinkle a thin layer of compost on top of the seed, cover with straw and keep it moist. If you have pets, encircle the spots with stakes and tie string around them to deter pets. Reduce the weeds in

walkways in your garden by covering the soil with some type of mulch. Some people like to use carpet scraps placed upside-down. Several sheets of moistened newspaper topped with hay or straw works very well, especially if you move your planting areas around a bit from year to year. Try to avoid tilling to remove weeds because the process brings up weed seeds from deeper in the soil and exposes them to the light they need to grow. Other tips for this month include fencing pest animals out of gardens, staking tomatoes while young, and keeping lawns mowed regularly yet not too low (3 inches high is often good).

Selecting flowering crabapples by Dr. Leonard Perry, Extension Professor, University of Vermont Few woody plants offer such value to landscapes and wildlife as do the flowering crabapples, with such variety in flowers and fruits and multiseason interest. These qualities make them one of the most popular small flowering trees. Just make sure in your selections to choose ones resistant to diseases. Newer introductions are often the best bets. In the spring, the showy blossoms make their appearance in mid to late May before the lilacs bloom. Although actual time of bloom will vary from year to year, depending on temperature, a total bloom period of up to four weeks can be expected. The bloom period of an individual crabapple cultivar (cultivated variety) may vary from a few days to almost two weeks, depending on weather conditions. Crabapple buds may be pink or red, and the open blossoms of the various crabapples may range from white to dark purplish red, with many vari-

ations of pink and red in between. Most crabapples have single flowers; a few have semi-double or double blossoms but bear fewer fruit. Some good choices with white flowers include ‘Adirondack’, Camelot, ‘Centennial’, ‘Dolgo’, ‘Donald Wyman’, Guinevere, HarvestGold, Lancelot, Molten Lava, ‘Professor Sprenger’, ‘Red Swan’, Sargent, Sugar Tyme, and ‘Tina’. Some good choices with pink flowers include ‘Louisa’, ‘Robinson’, and ‘Strawberry Parfait’. For red flowers, consider Centurion, ‘Prairifire’, or ‘Purple Prince’. Most crabapples have attractive green foliage with solid margins, except for the deeply cut leaves of Golden Raindrops. Some have a distinct reddish or bronze leaf color for the first month or so of the growing season, while others retain the reddish coloration throughout the season as with ‘Purple Prince’. Some crabapple cultivars even have ornamental gold to yellow fall colors as with ‘Calocarpa’ and Lancelot.

Crabapple fruits are two inches or less in diameter. The color ranges from bright red to purple and from bright yellow to orange, with intermediate shades and combinations. Fruits of some cultivars begin to color in August, while others do not reach their true color until September or October. Good choices for red fruit include ‘Adirondack’ (orange-red), Camelot, Centurion (cherry red), ‘Donald Wyman’, Guinevere, Molten Lava (orangered), ‘Prairiefire’ (purplered), ‘Professor Sprenger’ (orange-red), ‘Purple Prince’ (maroon), ‘Red Swan’, ‘Robinson’ (dark red), Sargent, ‘Tina’, and Sugar Tyme. Good choices for yellow to golden fruit include ‘Centennial’ (red-yellow), ‘Dolgo’ (redyellow), Golden Raindrops, HarvestGold, Lancelot, ‘Louisa’, and ‘Strawberry Parfait’. Fruits of some cultivars ripen and drop by the end of August, while others may still be present (“persistent”) in spring. If you don’t want a landscape littered with fruit in

the fall, look for those with persistent fruit such as ‘Donald Wyman’, ‘Professor Sprenger’, Guinevere, Lancelot, Sugar Tyme, or ‘Tina’. When choosing crabapples, consider not only your preference for flowers and fruits, but where they’ll be planted. Make sure the soil is well-drained and doesn’t get waterlogged. They’ll flower and fruit best in full sun, but will tolerate a few hours of shade per day only with fewer flowers (and so fewer fruits). If planted near a walk, or close to where they’ll be viewed, consider ones with persistent red and small fruits, upright habit, or with fragrant flowers (such as ‘Donald Wyman’, ‘Prairie Fire’, or Sargent). If planted farther away, consider ones with larger and yellow fruits. White flowers and yellow fruits blend better with evergreens, dark stone, or red brick buildings. White flowers and red fruits blend nicely with lighter natural color backgrounds such as light brown and wood. Flowering crabapple trees are generally 15 to

20 feet tall. The Round Table Series with names such as Camelot, Guinevere, and Lancelot, reach about 10 feet tall. Most crabapples are rounded or vase-shaped, but growth habit varies widely from columnar such as with ‘Adirondack’ to weeping as with ‘Louisa’ or ‘Red Swan’. About the only insect that might be a serious problem in some areas is the Japanese Beetle. Cultivars that have shown high resistance to this include Centurion, HarvestGold, ‘Louisa’, and ‘Prairie Fire’. Diseases are a much greater problem on many crabapples than insects, particularly on older cultivars. Many of the newer cultivars have been bred

for resistance to the four main diseases which are the same as you’ll encounter with regular apples — scab, fireblight, cedar apple rust, and powdery mildew. All the above cultivars have good to excellent disease resistance. If diseases generally aren’t a problem in your area, or you can tolerate some leaf diseases, there are many more cultivar choices. Beware of cheap trees at chain stores, as often these have few if any roots, and may only recently have been potted (basically a “bare root” plant). Visit your local nursery or fullservice garden store for proven local cultivars with good disease resistance and good roots.

Small Steps to Health and Wealth program by Diane Mincher, Extension Nutrition and Food Specialist, University of Vermont Just in time for spring weather across the U.S., Rutgers University Cooperative Extension and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Cooperative Extension system are launching an online Small Steps to Health and Wealth? (SSHW) Challenge called Spring 2012 SSHW Challenge. This free six-week program, open to anyone who enrolls online, will be held from Sunday, April 15, through Saturday, May 26. Prizes will be awarded for participants who report the highest point totals. To sign up for the SSHW Challenge, follow the “Challenges” link on the Small Steps to Health and Wealth? web site at http://njaes.rutgers.edu/sshw/. Set up a user name and password and download a simple one-page user’s guide with instructions about how to proceed. Enroll in the Spring

2012 SSHW Challenge. Participants have a week after the SSHW Challenge, offered several times throughout the year, starts to enroll. For the Spring 2012 SSHW Challenge, the deadline is April 22. This sevenday grace period pertains both to enrollment in a challenge and to enter data for a particular challenge day. It is part of Small Steps to Health and Wealth?, a national Cooperative Extension program developed to motivate Americans to take action to simultaneously improve their health and personal finances. SSHW was built around a framework of 25 research-based behavior change strategies. The challenge was originally developed in a “paper and pencil” format with printed worksheets and is now available online. It has been well documented that when people monitor their behavior and measure how they are doing, they are often inspired to do better and

achieve positive results. Participants are on their honor to report their activities accurately. If they cheat on reporting their points, they are only cheating themselves by not following the recommended daily practices. The SSHW Challenge is based on the performance of 10 recommended practices on a daily basis — five that involve health and nutrition and five that involve financial management. Ten points are given for performing each one for a maximum of 700 points per week and 4,200 points for the entire challenge. The challenge is a great way to convert personal goals, like losing weight and saving money, into daily action steps. Even if you don’t sign up for the challenge, the following nutrition and financial practices are good ones to follow. The challenge’s five daily health and nutrition practices are: • Eat at least four cups of fruits and vegetables. • Get at least 30 min-

utes of physical activity. • Drink water or unsweetened beverages instead of sugar-sweetened beverages. • Eat at least two servings of whole grain foods. • Learn something new about health and nutrition. The SSHW Challenge also encourages people to follow these five financial management practices every day: • Save a $1 bill (or more) and/or pocket change. • Invest $5 or more per day, including in automated retirement savings plan deposits. • Track money spent throughout the day. • Eat lunch prepared at home. • Learn something new about personal finance. The latter activity for both health and personal finances can be accomplished by visiting web sites, attending seminars or by reading, listening to or viewing researchbased media reports. Spring Challenge partic-

ipants also have an opportunity to replace one daily health activity and one daily personal finance activity with unique daily personal challenges of their own. Providing some adaptation of the traditional SSHW Challenge format will personalize it for participants and give them an opportunity to practice new behaviors if they are already doing all of the 10 pre-selected activities. As participants enter their personal data, they will see their point totals for each day of the week and for each of the ten activities described above. They’ll also see a bar graph that compares their personal progress to the average scores of

everyone else participating in the challenge. Daily motivational messages also will be provided. Paper tracking forms can be downloaded to keep track of daily activities until they are entered online. Doing even one of the 10 recommended daily practices is a great way to get started on the path to better health and improved financial security. The more challenge activities that participants perform, the better. To sign up for the Spring 2012 SSHW Challenge, visit the Rutgers SSHW web site at http://njaes.rutgers.edu /sshw and click on “SSHW Online Individual Challenge.”
