Blue Bird Facts Bluebirds are members of the thrush family. Their diet is mostly made up of grasshoppers, crickets and beetles. Bluebirds will eat at feeders if you have a peanut butter and cornmeal mixture. Bluebird nests are built mostly by the female in natural tree cavities, old woodpecker holes, rail fences, holes in stumps and bird boxes. Their nests are made of dried grasses, pine needles, weed stems, fine twigs, and are lined with finer grasses, hairs and feathers. Young bluebirds leave the nest 15-20 days after hatching. Bluebirds are family oriented. The courting male dotes on the female, waving his wings, enticing her to select a nest site and offering her treats. The male also courageously guards the box during nest construction. Male bluebird deliver food to incubating females and participate equally in feeding nestlings and fledglings. Bluebirds are associated with hope, happiness and many other things we love. As a result, they have probably appeared in more songs, poems and literature than any other bird. Bluebirds are unique to North America. Hello Again, You’ve heard of horses that are barn sour. A barn sour horse will trot faster when heading back to the barn than when leaving! Well it appears that our motor home is a little barn sour. We left West Palm Beach, Florida heading for home, stopped for two days near Atlanta, Georgia, then on to Bassett, Virginia where we visited friends for a couple of days. After leaving Bassett, the coach drove like we were driving downhill all the way back to New York State. It’s a wonder we weren’t visited by one of those guys wearing a big hat, driving a car with a bubble gum machine on the roof. Our average speed had to reach the “wow” level when we passed Milford and drove into Cooperstown. You will probably not believe what happened next: the coach refused to drive past Schneider’s Bakery until we tanked up on their great coffee and had a couple of Schneider’s earth-shaking, lip-smacking homemade old-fashioned donuts. At one time we had a Ford Windstar van that suffered from the same ailment. It would go too fast on the way home but refused to drive past Schneider’s. I’m beginning to think my wife doesn’t trust me and thinks the entire chat involves more Irish blarney than Schneider donuts. What do you think? If you don’t believe me, drive down Route 80 towards Cooperstown. Turn south on Chestnut Street. Stop at the first traffic light at Main Street. If your auto drives past Schneider’s Bakery without tugging on the bit, it might indicate your vehicle has sufficient horsepower but is lacking in horse sense. After church Sunday morning, my favorite storyteller filled me in on a good one, so I’ll pass it on to you. I think he was talking about his Grandfather. It seems that one day, Grandpa was driving his single-hitch horse and wagon along a curvy road when a Model T truck swerved around the horse and wagon causing the driver to lose control, leaving the road down a bank into a muddy sinkhole. Naturally Grandpa stopped to investigate. With that, the driver in a nervous frenzy said, “In as much as your bloomin’ horse and buggy caused this accident, I think it would be only fair to hitch your horse to my Model T and pull it back up onto the road.” Grandpa said he would be only too glad to do that. So he unhitched from the buggy and hooked or hitched the horse onto the rear axle of the Model T. With that Grandpa said, “Giddy up George!” but the horse did not move. Then, Grandpa said “Giddy up Tom!” and the horse still did not move. The Model T driver said, “That horse doesn’t seem to hear what you’re saying.” Grandpa then said, “Giddy up Nelly!” and the horse pulled the Model T back up the hill with ease. When they reached the road Grandpa explained, Nelly the horse is blind and would not exert herself unless she thought she was getting help from another horse.

When we turned off Route 80 onto Pickle Hill Road, leading to Sanders Road we were greeted with several road muffins—we knew we were home. You can travel this world over and you will never find an area equal to our upstate New York with its rolling hills, valleys, trees, lakes, streams, mountains—farm and village scenes, neighbors and friends greeting you with a simple “hi” or “glad to see you back.” This is home, the place where friends and family live. Something to think about: President Obama is clearly in favor of the federal government gaining more power while becoming larger and larger. He admits to that. His health program is proof of that. Something to remember: When government gets big enough to give you everything you want, it’s big enough to take everything you have. How about you and I having a bit of serious chatter! We spend most of our lives thinking, planning and working to advance our own personal or family way of life. Certainly in this day and age few could find fault with that. But, and with a big but … have you ever thought you would like to leave something behind for the benefit of others? I certainly have those thoughts. It’s only natural when we plan and attempt to provide some form of an inheritance for our family members and loved ones, possibly with a life insurance benefit, our property, a gun collection, money, an antique, painting, or some other chattel of value. How often are we given the opportunity to play a part, lend a hand, or offer constructive thought, in a long-term permanent plan to turn this upstate New York area into a thriving business area, offering long-time business opportunities and employment? A place where young couples will choose to live, raise their families, and become an asset to our communities. An area that offers real opportunity with a great and dependable future. An area which will offer full-time, good paying employment which will allow them to own homes, afford mortgage payments and property taxes, while being part of a friendly, healthy community. Next week we will announce a plan for a meeting to discuss the future of the Palatine Corridor. You will be invited. An acquaintance said, “When I was in college I dated the cutest girl in our class. Trying to impress her, I said ‘I’m not wealthy, I don’t have a new sports car and a yacht like my roommate, but I’m crazy about you.’ She replied, ‘I feel the same about you, but tell me more about your roommate.’” Which could be proof that we sometimes talk too much. Be happy, say hi to your neighbors. A wonderful way to meet new friends is in church. As the old saying goes, “Why not try it? You might like it.” Your greatest friend, the Lord Jesus, promises to be there too. Fred Lee and the Lee Family

Whatchmacallits When early gunpowder weapons became one-man portable, bullets were mostly cast lead balls. These early firearms were not made to any standard for barrell diameter. Each weapon came with its own bullet mold, so that the user could cast bullets as needed. Even when weapons like the caliver — which was made with a standard bore size and gave us the English word “caliber” were introduced, users were still often supplied a set of bullet molds with each gun. Shown here is an antique musket ball mold owned by Willis “Skip” Barshied Jr. This type of mold is called a scissors mold. It looks like a pair of pliers, except that the jaws enclose a hollow spherical section in between them. To cast a ball, the user
melts a quantity of lead in a container. The mold is closed and the molten lead poured in through the hole on top. The lead quickly cools and solidifies inside the mold. The scissor arms of the mold are opend and the bullet is extracted. The bullet is mostly round except for a tiny bit of projecting metal, called
the sprue, which is formed by lead hardening in the hole through which it was poured. There is usually a thin parting line formed around the ball as well, along the line where the mold opens. The lead bullet is taken out and the sprue and parting lines are filed off and what’s left is a bullet ready to be fired.

Collecting by Larry Cox Lemon squeezer Q: I have an old metal iron squeezer identified as being “The Arcade No. 2.” — Cathy, Amarillo, Texas A: The Arcade Manufacturing Com-pany of Freeport, IL, made lemon squeezers during the early

sell. It is Leigh Ware. — Wilfred, Albuquerque, NM A: The Leigh Pottery Company was started in 1926 in Alliance, Ohio, and continued until the early 1930s. Even though there is some dispute about exactly when the company folded, Lois Lehner, author of “Lehner’s Encyclopedia of U.S. Marks on Pottery, Porcelain & Clay” claims production ended in 1931. If you wish to know the value of your china, I recommend a good appraiser. You have several that are certified in Albuquerque,

Hill Top Tire celebrates 22nd year of business with Open House by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Hospitality is a word that comes to mind when attending Hill Top Tire’s Open House celebrating their 22nd year in business. “We want to show our customers — whether old or new — our appreciation of doing business with us,” said Mindy Webb, who together with her husband, David, and son, Jason, is the core of the family owned and managed business. Hill Top Tire was established by David Webb in 1990 with no employees needed to help out at the time. However, now Hill Top has five employees and services nearly 1,000 businesses including farms, trucking firms and municipalities within seven counties. “Most of our work is not done on the premises,” Mindy states, adding, “we also do a lot of Thruway work and work on I88.” As Hill Top offers round the clock service, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, they receive
many emergency calls, and keep two trucks ready to answer those calls at all times. “We also get many calls at this time of year for motor homes, campers, horse trailers and SUVs” Webb stated. “We service everything from wheelbarrows to earth moving equipment.” Webb says that many of Barbara Millington and Joe Millington catered the the road well attended, annual event. departments the excellent variety of food, send their crews to Hill Top for which was catered by Barbara servicing. Sherry Anne Ministries ‘Lifts up the Name’ at Grandview Baptist Church by Elizabeth A. Tomlin “I’ve got a lot of roots in me,” Dr. Sherry Ann Lints told the audience at Grandview Baptist Church in Fort Plain. Lints, mostly known as just ‘Sherry Anne’ by her many followers, is the product of a very passionate Italian upbringing and homelife. She also is afflicted with a bilateral hearing and speech disability, which was not discovered until she was already in school. Although she had taught herself to lip-read, she was labeled as a “spoiled brat” because of her inability to function normally in a classroom. However, once she was properly diagnosed, Sherry Anne strove to become the best at everything she encountered. She learned both Latin and Hebrew, winning high honor awards in school. “I was a true high achiever,” she
states, admitting that she was always searching for something that would give her the confidence she never developed due to her dysfunctional childhood. “I didn’t have self worth growing up,” she said, “and I needed those awards.” Sherry Anne has gone on to inspire others through her beautiful and Phyllis Reese (left) of the Empty Pockets Band visits melodious voice with Sherry Anne (right) and Sherry Anne's mom and reaching Reverend Sharon LaBella. out to people of Photos by Elizabeth A. Senior News Line by Matilda Charles The Grandparent Scam The Grandparent Scam targets seniors who fall for a trick of handing over money to an imposter grandchild. Even though it’s an old scam, it shows no sign of fading away. If anything, this scam is making a resurgence.
Typically the senior will get a call, supposedly from a grandchild, and be told there’s an emergency: The grandchild is in trouble, or there’s been an accident, or a mistaken arrest. It sounds very believable. No matter what the story, it always involves the need for
secrecy — and fast cash to be wired immediately. If you get one of these calls, don’t immediately agree to send money. Your first step is to verify the details. Is it really your grandchild on the other end of the phone? If you don’t recognize your grandchild’s voice, don’t
feed him information by saying “Is this David?”. Your second step is to call your grandchild’s home to verify whether he or she is actually away — or sitting right there. If this has happened to you, you must report it to the police. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

BBB helps consumers spot fake online reviews and navigate so-called deals BUFFALO, NY — So you want to buy something online but worried you could get stung? Your instincts are right. While most people are honest, the Better Business Bureau warns consumers that buying from complete strangers online comes with risk. Feedback and reviews of products and services you could use to help make your buying decision could be misleading and online offers can lead you astray. BBB offers clues to keep consumers from falling prey to a poor online purchase. “Millions of people turn to consumer reviews of products and services each day to help them with buying decisions,” said David Polino, Better Business Bureau President. “Unfortunately, scammers know this, and there is ample evidence that some online feedback is planted.” When it comes to reviews, professional writers can stack websites with positive comments about a particular company’s products or services — or negative feedback about their competitors. Because of this, the consumer review landscape
is often not what it appears to be, and comments should be taken with a grain of salt, whether on retail, reseller, travel or services web sites. Online resellers often post information to help consumers discern reviews and seller information. BBB recommends consumers peruse this information carefully before making the purchase. Amazon has a policy that prohibits “positive reviews for products in which the author has a financial investment.” Aside from company staff members and marketers, freelance writers are paid for each review they post that praises or trashes a company or its competitor. While a great deal of online customer feedback is reliable and offers are authentic, BBB urges consumers to arm themselves with know-how and to consider several things when evaluating products and reviews: It is all in the name — Reviewers’ names that include two or three numbers at the end are often signs of robotic reviewwriting software. In addition, some fake reviews can be spotted if the re-
viewer’s name resembles a business or product name. Watch out for glowing subject line and verbiage — Most consumers won’t use subject lines such as “This product changed my life.” Another giveaway is the repeated use of a product’s complete name and detailed description, such as “The XYZ Model 443 XZ outperformed all other television sets in its category.” Look for unusual sentence structure — If the review is awkwardly worded, vague or praises its maker’s company, it may be planted. Cut and paste suspicious sentences into a search engine and see if it comes up on other sites. Does the feedback resemble an ad or review from a real product user? Consumer reviews that read like product descriptions in catalogs and websites probably are. Is there marketing speak in the message? — If the review exudes blind product loyalty, uses marketing phrases such as “integrates seamlessly,” or “this is the kind of product that you’ve been looking for,” it was likely written by someone who
is pushing the product. Black or white reviews — While a consumer may have strong opinions for or against a company or its products, take a second look at any feedback that is excessively positive or negative. Once you understand how companies and hired reviewers work, you can often detect a feedback piece with a hidden agenda. Long-winded reviews with “life changing” testimonials tend to raise suspicion. However, there is no guarantee a short consumer feedback post is legitimate either. The best way to get a feeling for a product is to read reviews from a variety of sources, and look for any pattern in feedback on a single site. Friends on social networking sites can be a good source for leads. The more you read about the product and company, the better you will be at judging whether you are reading legitimate comments or meaningless marketing disguised as consumer experience. Know the product you want. Is the item rare? How much does it usually sell for? If you find something at a very low cost, it could be a knock-off. Do
your own research via web, books or other authorities before you buy. Do not assume authenticity. Short duration sales may be suspicious. There could be a reason for a brief sale, but it may also set the stage for a hitand-run seller. Scammers want to hook their bait and then disappear. Keep the law on your side. Online offers open up the world for transactions, but it’s important to know American laws do not apply anywhere but in America. So if you tread beyond our boarders, tread with small amounts to protect your wallet. Investigate the seller’s feedback. The volume of comments should not be the only tool to evaluate a seller, since some of it can be false, it’s important to dig further. Find out if the seller has bought or sold anything recently. What was it? Accounts without recent activity are more likely to be stolen accounts. Is this auction consistent with items bought and sold in the past? Is the item location the same for this sale as for his last sales? Does the location actually exist? Search for it. Are pay-
ment methods the same as the past sales? Talk to the seller. If you have found what you’re looking for by e-mail, ask for a phone number privately. If the seller does not respond, consider it a red flag and keep searching. What is the return policy? Buying online should offer options and if there aren’t any proceed with certainty. Make sure this is exactly what you want and are willing to pay. If you do negotiate a return, make sure you also have the policy in writing. Payment method is very important. Use a secure payment method like PayPal and always pay with a credit card that is separate from your bank account if possible. Most credit card issuers will refund money if stolen from you. BBB cautions to never use Western Union for these transactions. Wire transfers of any kind of any kind should only be made when you know the recipient is standing by on the other end. For additional information you can trust or to find more consumer advice, start with trust at bbb.org.
