Hello Again, While in West Palm Beach, Florida I received via U.S. mail, a cardboard box with a little sticker up in the corner with the sender’s name and return address, “Mr. Leslie W. St. John, Fort Worth, TX.” Les and I married sisters, which caused us to be brother-in-laws. I don’t know if he is totally satisfied with that fact, but on the other hand - there ain’t much he can do about it. Fact is fact. Let’s get back to the cardboard box. It was cut down from a much larger box, held together with at least a full roll of Scotch tape. It’s saving grace—printed on the back in large letters, “Proudly Made in the U.S.A.” Now what would you expect to find in such a (lovely) container as this? I hesitated to open it as we both have been guilty of participating in some off beat jokes. For my birthday in April, he sent me a talking birthday card for which my wife would consider a divorce procedure if I passed it around in mixed company. Let’s get to the point. In the package was a rather large book, “History of Montgomery and Fulton Counties, N.Y.” with illustrations, descriptive of scenery, private residences, public buildings, fine blocks, and important manufacturers. Portraits of old pioneers and prominent residents. Published in New York in the year 1878. I do not know if this was Les’s way of getting the best of me or not. I surely can say I will never be able to match (or equal) this gift. In a later phone conversation he insisted that the book is a gift. He may have expected me to glean information, and include it in future Hello Again pages. I’m glad he considers it a gift. I probably would not have given it back anyway. On page 132 under the heading of Fort Plain: George Clarke, Governor of the Colony of New York, built in a solitary forest, the first house within the village of Fort Plain. It continued with, “For a time, the family resided here in a commanding position, having a force of slaves to do their bidding.” We Americans like to think and believe our nation got its start July 4, 1776 but most of the rest of the world did not think of it as anything other than 13 colonies until the Treaty of Paris was signed September 3, 1783, seven years later. In that treaty, Great Britain agreed to the American claim of being an independent nation. This treaty served as the first positive step in the future development of our great nation. Britain agreed to cede the new nations all lands between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mississippi River and from the Great Lakes to the 31st parallel. To be more frank, they ceded or gave over to us all of that land. So what happened next? Did early Americans with their teams of horses and oxen hitched to a Conestoga wagon trek across the remainder of the country, beat off the warring tribes of American Indians, take over the land to control and own it? While this colorful tale makes good fodder for a novel or Hollywood movie, maybe we should dig further for “the rest of the story.” Twenty years after England ceded that huge hunk of land, President Thomas Jefferson saw an opportunity to nearly double the size of the nation. From France, he made the Louisiana Purchase for $15 million. The Constitution did not authorize the purchase of foreign territories. Jefferson said he “stretched the Constitution until it cracked.” Purchasing territory was a new concept in the entire world. European powers had never heard of it but quickly found it to be a great way to

make money. Sell lands to raise money, to those crazy Americans. Soon after, in 1819, the U.S. purchased from Spain, Florida and the Gulf Coast of what is now Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi for $5 million. In the 1840’s, shortly after annexing Texas, the U.S. was suffering from growing pains and paid Mexico $15 million for the southwestern quarter of the nation, which added 529,017 square miles. Next we acquired the Oregon Territory, and what is now Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. In 1854 the U.S. paid Mexico $10 million and added part of New Mexico and Arizona. In little more than half a century, the little infant nation of a string of cities along the ocean had grown all the way to the Pacific Ocean. All of this in about 71 years. Next, in 1867, the U.S. bought Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million and before the turn of the century annexed the Hawaiian Islands. After the Spanish-American War, we acquired Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and several smaller islands. Again in 1917, the U.S. purchased the Virgin Islands from Denmark. In 200 years the United States had grown into the fourth largest country in the world. Why is this miniature summary of “how the United States grew” important to upstate New Yorkers today? In a very clear picture, with proven great results, it teaches that in trying to grow and improve, the leaders and citizens had to act. If we, the citizens of upstate New York along the Palatine Corridor, desire to see this great strip of land become a true economic center, then we must act. Just like those earlier Americans. Soon we will insert a card in this publication asking you to attend our first meeting of the Palatine Corridor Dream. If you are willing to attend, we ask that you return the card so we can plan where and when to hold the meeting. A farmer was overheard talking with his lawyer. “My wife is suing for divorce, see that she gets it.” A prisoner, about to be executed by a firing squad and before being blindfolded was asked if he’d like one last cigarette. “No thanks,” he said. “I’m trying to quit.” Farmer Burt suddenly died and appeared at St. Peter’s pearly gates when the saint asked him if he wished to enter Heaven. After Burt said that he did indeed, St. Peter said, “Then you must suffer a bit more before I can allow you to enter. You must spend one month with the ugliest, stupidest woman on Earth.” Just then, Burt saw his hometown’s mayor floating on a cloud with a gorgeous blonde. “Hey,” Burt called to Saint Peter, “that’s not fair. I’ve led a much better life than that crook and he gets to be with a beautiful woman.” “Relax,” Saint Peter said. “You got it all wrong—that’s her punishment.” Life is full of mystery. The greatest, “is there life after death?” We all believe we are appointed to eventually die. To find the answer, attend a Bible believing teaching church. Let the Bible teaching show you the answer. My personal invitation: Attend church on Sunday. There are 168 hours in every week. Spend one hour in church and you will become happier for the other 167 hours. One hour to learn how to be happier for a lifetime into eternity. Remember don’t kick the dog. He might bite back. Smile at your neighbors, they might smile back. Fred Lee and the Lee Family

New Herkimer BOCES program provides healthcare training to local adults The course is open to residents of Herkimer, Oneida and Madison counties, and the cost for students is completely grant-funded. The training is for becoming a home health aide or personal care aide. Herkimer-FultonHamilton-Otsego BOCES is now offering a 12-week program that will train local adults to become home health aides or personal care aides. Everybody in Herkimer, Oneida and Madison counties is eligible to take the course for free through a health care pipeline grant —
regardless of current income. This opportunity has the potential to directly result in employment because individuals and agencies are readily hiring home health aides and personal care aides, said Sara Nicolette, adult vocational nursing programs coordinator. “We have a large elderly population in the three-county area,” Nicolette said. “There are employment opportunities.” Herkimer BOCES Adult Education recently received certification from the state Department of Health to run this program.
The course includes a clinical component and classes from 6-9 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. Admission is on a rolling basis, and classes begin once every four weeks — starting on Monday, May 21. Classes will be taught at the BOCES LPN training facility in Ilion. Directions to the location can be found on the LPN website at lpn. herkimerboces.school fusion.us. Upon completion of the program, students will be entered into the state registry as a home health aide or personal care aide. The only people
who can’t take the class for free using the grant are those who have previously received funding through a health care pipeline grant. Applicants are not required to have a high-school diploma or GED. It is recommended that applicants be 17 or older, but it is not required. The course also is open to certified nursing assistants who want to add this to their resume. The cost of books will be covered through the grant, but students will have to invest in scrubs. Call 315-8672096 and ask to be mailed the applications.

Whatchamacallits Collecting butterflies seems like a quaint hobby from long ago, but the butterflywebsite.com and the Lepidopterists' Society (www.lepsoc.org) are two examples that show the fascination with, and collection of, these delicate creatures continues to this day. Lepidopterists are people, professional or amateur, who study or collect butterflies and moths — lepidoptera. The collecting hobby typically involves capturing specimens, using a chemical or drug to quickly and painlessly kill the insect and then displaying it pinned to a board under glass. There was a time when collecting insects was all the rage. The hobby enjoyed great popularity in the Victorian and Edwardian eras of the 19th and early 20th cen-
turies. Victorians, in particular, were enamored with nature. The Industrial Revolution gave rise to the middle class and leisure time for taking up hobbies, like collecting and studying insects.
In addition to the well known butterfly net, naturalists used mesh tools like the one shown here. This example of an antique specimen collecting device is owned by Willis “Skip” Barshied Jr.

Montgomery County Dairy Princess Crowned by Elizabeth A. Tomlin With a tearful farewell speech New York’s Montgomery County 2011-2012 Dairy Princess Gabrielle Brownell turned over her reign to Ashley Oeser of Sprakers. Brownell recalled all of the people who had helped her promote dairy throughout the county, especially her mom and dad, and her dairy farm sponsors, Craig and Linda Stevens of Otsquago View Dairy. “I would like to thank all of the farmers and everyone else who supported me throughout this year,” Brownell said. Oeser has been part of a dairy family for many years and has been involved with the
Montgomery County Dairy Princess program as an Ambassador on the Court. “I feel that I have knowledge and understanding of the dairy industry,” Oeser said. “I have been involved in the Dairy Quiz Bowl, the Dairy Experience group, judging and showing Holsteins, the OtsegoH e r k i m e r Montgomery (OHM) Dairy Club, I have attended the NY Holstein Convention, and my most recent activity is Junior Dairy Leaders.” She intends to create a Face Book page and keep it updated so folks can follow what the Montgomery County Dairy Princess

Dairy Princess Coronation Banquet was held at ‘Dome 49’, Fort Plain. For more information contact Tammy Chittenden at 518332-0110 or e-mail rtchitty2003@yahoo. com.

May is Motorcycle Safety Month Safety stressed for motorcyclists as summer months approach motorcyclists are about 39 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in traffic crashes. New motorcycle licenses for March 2012 were up 53 percent from March 2011. Registrations were up eight percent and license renewals were up six percent in March 2012 versus March 2011. The following are some tips for drivers to help keep motorcyclists safe on our roadways. • Always allow a motorcyclist the full lane width — never try to share a lane. • Perform a visual check for motorcycles by checking mirrors and blind spots before entering or exiting a lane of traffic, and at intersections. • Always signal your intentions before changing lanes or merging with traffic. • Allow more following distance — three

There are more than 655,000 licensed motorcyclists and more than 340,000 registered motorcycles in New York State. In the past 10 years alone, motorcycle licenses have increased by 28 percent and registrations by 76 percent. Today, New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Commis-sioner and Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Chair Barbara J. Fiala reminded motorists to watch for motorcyclists and stressed the importance of motorcycle safety as more bikes take to the roads as summer begins. In 2010, there were more than 5,500 motorcycle crashes in New York State, resulting in more than 5,400 injuries and 185 fatalities. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration research shows that per vehicle mile traveled,

or four seconds — when behind a motorcycle so the motorcyclist has enough time to maneuver or stop in an emergency. • Never tailgate. In dry conditions, motorcycles can stop more quickly than cars. • Never drive while distracted. Motorcyclists can increase their safety by: • Avoiding riding in poor weather conditions; • Wearing brightly colored protective gear and a DOT-compliant helmet; • Positioning themselves in the lane where they will be most visible to other drivers; and • Never driving while impaired. Drama Club Students present Valley Voices X by Elizabeth A. Tomlin A time of sadness, tears and good-byes marked this 10th year of the Valley Voices at the Canajoharie High School. With long-time Drama Club members Matt Soto, Stephanie Terwilliger and Chris Hopler Jr. — and new member Jenna Sierra, all graduating this year; the Canajoharie-Fort Plain Drama Club won’t be the same. “It’s going to be very different not having the drama club behind me as I go on to college,” Soto admitted. Soto has been Drama Club President for the past two years and is looked up to as a friend and mentor by everyone in the club. “I am very grateful they gave me the opportunity to be a part of the Drama Club and welcomed me as a fellow actor,” Soto commented. “I’ll always remember that.” Valley Voices is an important part of the Drama Club for the seniors, as it gives them an opportunity to write and direct plays — and also select the cast. This year the three plays were “Relief,” written by Billy Windsman and directed by Sarah Ells; “Kaya,” written by
Stephanie Terwilliger and directed by Matt Soto; and “The (Mostly) Tornado Hour” written by Jenna Sierra and directed by Laine Cyr — with final direction by Jenna Sierra. In “Relief” a young lady (Beth Mallett) finds herself turning to steroids in college to appease her mother’s (Stephanie Arndt) desire for her to excel at softball. With the help and advice from her friend and roommate (Rachael Takacs) and the coach (Zack Rivenburg) she succeeds in finding the courage to turn away from softball and steroids and Canajoharie-Fort Plain Drama Club pursue her life elsewhere. Real Estate Why buy now: six reasons
(NAPSA) — The American dream of owning a home may be more within reach these days than many people realize. There are several reasons. The economy is improving, home prices have stabilized in most areas and the cost of owning a home is more affordable than ever. “It’s understandable for people to be skeptical about housing after the economic uncertainty of the past few years,” says Quicken Loans chief economist Bob Walters. “But history teaches us that the best time to buy is when we are most afraid and pessimistic. It is, of course, impossible to perfectly time markets, but I think people who buy homes now will be pleased that they did in the years to come.” Here are a few more reasons to buy a home: 1. Record-low mortgage rates — There’s no better time to lock in a 30- or 15-year fixed-rate mortgage. As the economy improves and rates go up, many people on the fence will be left wondering why they didn’t take advantage
now. 2. It’s a buyer’s market — While home affordability is at record highs, that hasn’t translated into substantial demand for housing yet. As a result, buyers are in control and are dictating terms and conditions. It won’t always be this way.... 3. Low-cost mortgages — Prospective homebuyers who cannot afford a higher down payment are purchasing homes with a mortgage insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). FHA loans have low down payments, are easier to qualify for and have lower closing costs. 4. The rent is too high — As demand for rental units surges and the cost to rent continues to move higher, a monthly mortgage payment can often be less than your monthly rent check. 5. Home values are positioned to appreciate — Home prices fell as much as 50 percent or more after the housing crash. No one should expect skyrocketing home values, but home prices will resume their steady march higher in the coming years. “Stick Built Quality” Modular Homes

6. Home buying has gone mobile — Home buying is getting easier as mobile apps let borrowers compare home loan options. One such app, the Quicken Loans Mortgage Calculator for Android and Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, allows house hunters driving by their $200,000 dream home to quickly calculate their prospective payment, check current mortgage rates
and figure out their loan term — all without calling a lender.

Community Health Fair promoted by local school districts by Elizabeth A. Tomlin A community health fair boasting 40 organizations and vendors — and organized by Canajoharie, Fort Plain and St. Johnsville School representatives — was recently hosted by the Fort Plain High School. The three school districts’ Food Service Director, Lauri Dahlin, worked to organize and coordinate the event over the period of several months. “I’d wanted to see each school’s wellness committees come together and share information,” said Dahlin. Bassett Hospital Rural Health Education Network of Delaware, Otsego, Montgomery and Schoharie counties (RHENDOMS), which focuses on improved health for county residents by promoting excellence and innovation in health education, had several educators at the event. HFM Prevention Professional Betsy Reksc, MS, CPP-G, displayed a large assortment of material at the event informing attendees about old and new concerns in teen’s health. “Gambling is becoming a big problem,” Reksc said. “It is brought right into your home

grams offered are designed to build self-esteem, teach healthy alternatives and provide skills necessary for making good decisions and solve problems in today’s society. “Our programs are literacybased and aligned with NYS educational standards.” Customized programs and presentations are available to address a wide array of issues. Contact Reksc at breksc@yahoo.com. Betty Sanders provided dental health education at the event. “We work in the schools educating children about the preventing cavities and periodontal disease,” said Sanders. “We also distribute gift bags containing toothbrushes, floss and toothpaste in the schools.” Many demonstrations and free giveaways were available at the Health Fair including smoke detectors from the Canajoharie Fire Dept., massages by The St. Johnsville’s NHS (from left) Advisor Deb Conte, Alex Hart, Dakota Lotus Center, and even a Mereness, Brandon Campione and Advisor Mary Buddenhagen, mixed healthy trail mix from the up their own recipe of a healthy “High Energy Trail Mix,” which they St. Johnsville National shared with Madeleine Taylor, who was visiting the Health Fair from St. Honor Society. Ten “To Do’s” for homeowners (NAPSA) — It’s time to check around the house to make sure things are operating efficiently. Here are 10 often-overlooked tasks to add to your homecleaning list: 1. Check AC: Have your air-conditioning system tuned up to lower energy bills and ensure the system is running at its manufacturer-rated efficiency. 2. Check Water Heater: If your water heater is more than five years old, check it for signs of leakage or rusting at the bottom. 3. Fertilize Lawn: Apply a high-nitrogen fertilizer once in the spring and again in the fall. 4. Check Refrigerator: Clean the refrigerator’s condenser coil with a long-handled bottle brush and a vacuum cleaner with an attachment hose to remove dust and lint that could shut down the unit by causing it to overheat. 5. Clean Gutters: Clean the gutters so the rainwater flows easily off the roof. Clearing leaves prevents water from pooling in areas and attracting mosquitoes. 6. Organize Closets: Wash or dry-clean clothes before storing them in a zippered sweater or blanket bag or in a plastic bin. 7. Clean Carpets: Vacuum carpets and shampoo with a spray foam or powder, or
rent a steamer from the hardware store for a deeper clean. 8. Wash Exterior Windows: Pick a cloudy day to wash exterior windows. Too much sun dries the cleaning solution too quickly and creates streaks. 9. File Important Documents: Store warranties, operating manuals and other documents in hanging files, folders or binders for easy access. 10. Check Batteries: The average home is filled with batteryoperated devices — from flashlights to smoke detectors to cordless phones. Don’t forget to test those devices and replace the batteries with fresh ones. Test smoke alarms once per month and change the batteries at least twice per year. Ensure there is at least one working smoke alarm on every level of your home, particularly in or near sleeping areas. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 3,000 people in the U.S. lose their lives in residential fires every year. It’s time to replace the batteries if the detector emits a warning sound, such as chirping or beeping. For more information, visit www.interstatebatteries.com.

Interior design trends: Easy seasonal changes refresh and revive your home (ARA) — Break out of the winter gloom by making some simple changes to your home with bright, fresh decor. 1. Color your world happy To uplift your mood and give your home a new personality, color should be the first thing you address. Paint is an easy and affordable way to dramatically change a living space. Feeling adventurous? Dabble in some vibrant shades inspired by the flora and fauna in your rregion. Love the bright red of blooming tulips? How about the rich blue of the sky at the noon hour? Try picking one thing and paint it that bold color — a single wall, a door, or even a piece of furniture. 2. Mix in light and fresh decor Window treatments are a great place to start — replace dense fabrics with airy options that beg to blow in the warm breeze. Next, store away existing rugs and replace with ones that feature bright colors or botanical designs. Dark accent pillows can be replaced gwith fluffy, colorful options that add life to dated couches and chairs. Seasonal decor changes are simple and can be swapped out year after y

year. 3. Bring the feeling of “green” indoors Houseplants make any room look more luxurious, and they are natural air cleaners, awakening the senses of spring’s fresh air. Good, low-maintenance indoor houseplants include the peace lily, spider plant and snake plant. 4. Cut the clutter Of course any home refresh is not complete without some cleaning. Don’t let spring cleaning overwhelm you — start small and go through any clutter, sorting into piles to use, store, give away and throw away. Shine up mirrors, which will reflect that beautiful spring sunshine to brighten and enlarge the feeling of the room. To stay on top of your organization and home management, create a MyLowe’s profile at www.lowes.com/mylowes. While there, you can create a virtual version of your home for easy project planning. Changing your home to reflect the seasons is easy with a few basic steps and a little creativity. Remember to embrace the feeling of spring, and the inspiration will come naturally.

Lawn & Garden Beware of bugs Warmer temperatures aren’t just attractive to people, but to mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas. Mosquitoes can transmit West Nile virus; ticks can transmit Lyme disease and other serious infections; and fleas can transmit plague. To prevent these illnesses, use an appropriate insect and tick repellent and apply it properly. Prime mosquito-biting hours are usually dusk to dawn, but ticks are out at all times. Young ticks are so small that they can be difficult to see, but both young and adult ticks hungrily look to animals and sometimes people to bite. To keep ticks at a distance, avoid tickinfested areas (especially places with leaf-litter and high grasses) and use repellent containing 20 percent DEET. You can also treat clothing with the repellent, permethrin, (which protects through several washings) or purchase clothing that is pre-treated with permethrin. Always follow the directions on repellent packaging. If you find an attached tick, don’t panic, ticks are easy to remove with a pair of fine-tipped tweezers. Consult your healthcare provider if you develop a rash, fever, body aches. Source: www. cdc.gov

Roofingg Revelation n #1: Did you know your roof can be repaired, saving you thousands of dollars in needless expenses. But many roofers will tell you that a replacement is needed because they can charge you more money for a complete roof replacement. In fact, most roofers don’t even touch repairs. All they want to do is go around slapping new roofs on homes, many times carelessly, which can void your manufacturers warranty.

Newest lawn mowers are a cut above (NAPSA) — If your lawn mower is more than 10 years old, it may be time to consider a replacement. In the past decade, engineering advances have produced gas-powered lawn mowers that run cleaner, start easier and are more fuel efficient than ever before, while providing a variety of options that make yard care easier. Gas-powered mowers remain the No. 1 choice among homeowners, accounting for four out of every five mowers sold in the United States, according to The Stevenson Company, a leading consumer research organization. Lawn care experts say they aren’t surprised because gas mowers give consumers so many choices when it comes to power, price and options — something they don’t get with electric and battery-powered mowers, which are mainly an option for homeowners with small yards. “Gas mowers provide a range of power to reliably mow any size yard and even tall, thick grass,” explains Rick Zeckmeister, a vice president at Briggs
& Stratton Corporation, which engineers and manufactures gas engines for outdoor power equipment. Today’s gas-powered lawn mowers, he points out, are also in tune with today’s environmentally conscious lifestyles. Other innovations and benefits of the newest gas mowers include: • Easy starting, with a single pull of the starter rope or the push of a button, like in the newest cars; • Improved fuel efficiency and advanced muffler systems that produce a more pleasant sound quality and less vibration; • Ample engine power to mulch grass clippings
while mowing, turning them into a natural fertilizer for the lawn; • A variety of options to make mowing easier, from mowers that automatically adjust to the walking pace of the person mowing to digital dashboards that show the time, fuel level, maintenance reminders and other information. Briggs & Stratton provides an online tutorial on how to select a lawn mower at www.yardsmarts.com. For information on environmental and product performance considerations when choosing a new lawn mower, visit www.briggsandstratton.c om.
