Did you know? Memorial Day is always celebrated on the last Monday of May. It was formally known as Decoration Day and commemorates all men and women, who have died in military service for the United States. Memorial Day was not made a federal holiday until 1971. Memorial Day was first recognized on May 5, 1862, when General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month, on May 30, 1862. Waterloo, NY is considered the birthplace of the holiday. Many southern states have their own days for honoring the Confederate dead.

Hello Again, Listen to this tale oh ye friends of the land. Where shall we start in attempting to understand Hiawatha’s insight and wisdom? Let’s start in the beginning. The greater portion of what now constitutes the state of New York, when first visited by our forefathers, was inhabited by five distinct and powerful Indian tribes: the Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas and Senecas. Each of these tribes were fiercely independent. They did not share a common language. Often they raided each other. At one time there were six tribes. The Tuscaroras wandered away to the south and settled in North Carolina leaving the five tribes in the New York area. During these years, a Mohawk Indian by birth, lived during his growing up years with the Mohawks. It was said that he became a great teacher and counselor but as the Bible says—he could not be accepted as a prophet in his own land. He moved to join the Onondagas, built a cabin, and took a wife. Here, he found a new permanent home. After a period of time he became highly respected, was believed to be a very wise statesman, lawgiver, shaman, and unifier, was given the honorable name of Hiawatha, which means, “a very wise man.” Eventually leaders from all of the five nations came to this wiseman for counsel and advice. In this manner, all power came naturally into his hands. He was regarded as the first among all leaders. During Hiawatha’s lifetime, these five tribes were being invaded by their enemies from the north. Plundering, stealing, murdering, raping and taking of hostages were common practices. It was during this time of trouble, leaders of the five nations met in counsel realizing their own way of life was being destroyed by their northern enemies. While the picture is not completely clear, Hiawatha presented a plan to join the five separate groups into a large, powerful nation. The large and powerful Iroquois nation came into power. They joined into such a powerful war machine, they could easily defend themselves and repel the invaders. Hiawatha, during counsel gatherings, shared a powerful bit of advice. From campfire to campfire, he was given credit for saying, “Never invite more into our Iroquois Nation or sign a treaty with any group. In doing so, we will surrender our strength to the treaty. In honoring the treaty, we lose strength and others gain control over us.” Hear Hiawatha’s advice: do not ever sign or become part of a treaty whereby you surrender your rights to some other group. The lesson from Hiawatha’s wisdom might apply to you and me, you know, we Americans. Please realize the following announcement could lead to one of the greatest United States freedom-destroying acts or treaties we could possibly ever become a part of.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently announced the Obama administration will be working hand-in-glove with the United Nations to pass a new “small arms treaty.” In other words, or more accurate in my words: If we, the United States, enter into an agreement or treaty with the U.N. to allow the U.N. to have control over our citizens owning, using, selling, or lending small arms we will at that time have entered into an agreement allowing this power group some control over the citizens of the United States. In my humble opinion—no outside organization or government should ever gain any power over the citizens of the United States. We stand with our constitution and republic form of government as our ruling concept. No outside power should ever be allowed to get a finger hold into our way of life. Remember a signed treaty would become something the U.N. could dictate and we would have to obey. They would become master and we the humble slaves. My prayer would include—do not allow this administration to lead our country deeper into socialism or allow any organization to hold authority or control over us. Please—no gun control treaty with the U.N. Leave the United States alone. Do not change it. As Hiawatha cautioned hundreds of years ago: Sign or join no treaty whereby we surrender our authority or power over to some outside group. One mighty smart, very early American. Born here in our area—he was a Mohawk Valley—Mohawk Indian. The five New York Indian tribes became the all-powerful Iroquois nation. Like the Iroquois Nation, the separate colonial states grew to become one nation of fifty states. As Hiawatha said—let’s not surrender or hand over our freedom or control to an outside group. We can pass our own laws. We do not need the U.N. to do it for us. Some of our congressmen are quite thoughtful. They are suggesting an increase in the minimum wage. They don’t think anyone should have to work for over a half hour to buy a gallon of gas. A hard working, honest country lady visiting Washington, hoping to meet Hillary Clinton looked up and down the street and asked a policeman, “Which side is Hillary Clinton on?” After a moment’s hesitation, the policeman, while shaking his head said, “Ours, I hope.” Some may not be old enough to remember Kate Smith singing “God bless America, land that I love.” The America she sang about was the greatest nation on the face of the earth and it still is. Kate, I wish all Americans could hear your message. With the same love and respect as the tone in her voice, we should attempt to share with our neighbors, friends, and family. God bless you, our friend. Fred Lee and the Lee Family

Folts Homes celebrates National Nursing Home Week “Celebrating the Journey” was the theme for National Nursing Home Week 2012 (May 13-19), and Folts Homes in Herkimer had planned events all week to honor their residents and the staff who share their journey and care for them. For the staff, the week of celebration began with everyone enjoying free coffee and bagels, followed by another day of pizza, wings and salad, and a Chinese auction where they were given tickets and had the opportunity to win various prizes displayed in the main lounge. On Wednesday, an entertaining game show titled “Thanks for the Memories” challenged everyone’s memory of old songs, television programs and movies. The audience of staff and residents was divided into a “junior group” and a “senior group” to compete in remembering the music of their own era. As the

energetic show host Joe DeAndra Rigo commented, Trionfero played the first few “There have been so many great notes of songs in different cat- moments created for our resiegories, memories were stimu- dents and staff in celebration of lated and the audience would National Nursing Home Week. Whatchamacallits If you’ve ever blown out a candle (and who hasn’t), you know all about the less than pleasant smelling smoke the wick makes as it slowly burns out. This was especially true when candles were made of tallow, the most commonly used material by colonists and pioneers who could not afford, or did not have access to better lighting materials. In addition to an unpleasant odor, tallow candles burned unevenly. Blowing out a tallow candle would result in the melted material being spread around, too. A bellshaped candle snuffer could extinguish the flame, but not do much to stop the lingering smoke. A better solution is this scissor -shaped candle snuffer, which is a part of the antiques collection of Willis

“Skip” Barshied Jr. It was used to snuff candles by snipping off and collecting the burnt portion of a candle’s wick. Trimmed candle

wicks kept the candles from smoking up the house. This type of snuffer could also be used to trim the wick on an oil lamp.

Herkimer BOCES supports proposal for new high school diploma options Herkimer-Fulton-HamiltonOtsego BOCES has announced that it is in full support of the New York State Education Department’s recent proposal to create two new high school diploma options for students across the state. Beginning with children entering ninth grade in September 2013, students would have a choice among three possible pathways to a Regents diploma: • Traditional diploma – using the current Regents diploma format. • CTE diploma – focused on career and technical education. • STEM diploma – focused on science, technology, engineering and math. The new diploma options are designed to ensure that more of New York’s students graduate high school prepared for the rigors of college and the working world. Herkimer BOCES Superintendent Mark Vivacqua said he supports the proposal, and a CTE-focused diploma could be very valuable for students. “Today’s career and technical education programs are not what many of us remember from our high-school years,” Vivacqua said. “All who enter technical fields will need to further their learning in some way, and we are preparing students not only for work, but for post-secondary education.” The proposal to add the diploma options must be approved by the state Board of Regents before it can be implemented. A vote on the issue is expected within the next few months. The traditional diploma would maintain the current exam structure, which requires students to pass five Regents exams: English, math, science, U.S. history and global history. Students pursuing the CTE diploma would be required to

pass Regents exams in English, math, science and U.S. history. Instead of the global history exam, they would take a CTE assessment that meets the college and career-ready level of rigor. Similarly, students pursuing a STEM diploma would substitute a second math or science assessment for the global history requirement. Leaders at Herkimer BOCES believe the new graduation options will help strengthen the organization’s efforts to work with local businesses in developing a school-to-work pipeline. Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director John Scarano said he supports the proposal because local businesses are always trying to find potential employees with education in computers, mathematics, plumbing, welding, electrical work and other CTE-based fields. “They’re looking for workready people with those skills — we hear that more and more,” Scarano said. “And I think that if we’re going to retain our students in this area, that’s how we’re going to do it — by allowing them to graduate with diplomas that make them ready for immediate employment.” Alice Savino, executive director of the Workforce Investment Board of Herkimer, Madison and Oneida Counties, said more vocational training should be an option for students, so the Board of Regents should make it easier for students to follow the pathway they want to. The proposal also could help with the problem of students dropping out of school because they lose interest or aren’t learning anything they feel is related to something they might do after high school, Savino said. “I don’t think we provide enough vocational opportunities

to people — whether they want to be an architect, an engineer or a machinist,” she said. “We kind of suffocate that natural interest by not offering other opportunities.” Mark Cushman, executive vice president of Fermer Precision Inc. in Ilion, said he believes world-class manufacturing is alive in New York state. Many businesses, however, are having a difficult time filling their succession plans because there aren’t enough people trained in manufacturing skills, he said. Fermer Precision has been working with other manufacturers and local colleges to try to reintroduce students to manufacturing, Cushman said. The pathways proposal would be another way to encourage young people to stay in this area and work here, he said. “By all means, our company and other technical-based companies, we’re endorsing this,” Cushman said. “We recognize there’s a need out there, and we also recognize we need to be training and nurturing these young individuals to come in and move us into the future.” Pat Costello, president of the IBEW Local 43 union, said a CTE-based diploma would be beneficial for students. The union, which primarily represents electrical construction workers, has taken in many BOCES graduates as apprentices initially and as journeymen later, he said. CTE graduates already have a great foundation from two years in the BOCES program, Costello said. It’s important that the new CTE diploma would require a well-rounded education, while also preparing students for their next step, he said. “It’s what the BOCES model is supposed to do — train young men and women for careers,” he said.

Know your limits in the heat Even being out for short periods of time in high temperatures can cause serious health problems. Monitor your activities and time in the sun to lower your risk for heat-related illness. • If you’re outside in hot weather for most of the day you’ll need to make an effort to drink more fluids. • Avoid drinking liquids that contain alcohol or large amounts of sugar, especially in the heat. These actually cause you to lose more body fluid. • Take breaks often. Try to rest in shaded areas so that your body’s thermostat will have a chance to recover. Stop working if you experience breathlessness or muscle soreness. • Watch people who are at higher risk for heat-related illness, including infants and children up to four years of age; people 65 years of age or older; people who are overweight; people who push themselves too hard during work or exercise; and people who are physically ill or who take certain medications (i.e. for depression, insomnia, or poor circulation). • Eat healthy foods to help keep you energized. Collecting by Larry Cox Disney Cookie Jar Q: I have a “Lady and the Tramp” Siamese cat cookie jar that was made in 2004. I understand it has increased in value and wonder if you can give me an idea of how much. I seem to remember paying about $25 for it originally. — Sue, Camden, Ohio A: Remember the names of the cats? Si and Am. Your cookie jar was in a limited issue of 250 and is worth $200, according to “The Official Price Guide to Disney Collections” by Ted Hake (House of Collectibles, $29.95). Q: Is there someone near me who can help me appraise my mother’s dishes. They are approximately 80 years old, clear glass with an etched pattern. Can you help me? — Nora, Albuquerque, NM A: I think your dishes are probably pieces of a Depression glass pattern. There are several excellent guides you can use to see if you can find your particular pattern. One of my favorite references is “War-man’s Depression Glass: Identification and

Price Guide” by Ellen T. Schroy and published by Krause (www.krause.com). This guide has most of the patterns issued, is fully illustrated and easy to navigate. I think the prices listed accurately reflect the marketplace. Keep in mind that values change from region to region. For example, Coors pottery brings a much higher price in Colorado than it does in Vermont. If you use an appraiser, you should expect to pay for this service. Q: I bought a corner cast-iron table a number of years ago for $75. It has dragon feet, and I bought it because I thought it was unique. I am enclosing a picture of it and would like to know the age of this table. -- Lela, Godfrey, IL A: Without actually being able to examine this table, I can only venture a guess. It appears to reflect the styles of the 1920s and ‘30s. To find out for certain, you need to contact a dealer or appraiser in your area. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Collecting by Larry Cox Old Iron Q: I am enclosing two views of an old iron of mine and would greatly appreciate it if you can tell me more about it and estimate how much it is worth. — Joan, Sun City, AZ A: I always hate to answer a question about irons, because when I do, it triggers an avalanche of mail from others who own older irons. I am usually hard pressed just to stay on top of the extra volume of mail. With that said, readers with collectible irons should contact an expert. David Irons is just such a man and has written an informative book about them, “Irons by Irons.” He might be able to give you an idea of what your iron is worth. Contact him at Irons Antiques, 223 Covered Bridge Road, Northhampton, PA 18067; and dave@ironsantiques.c om. Check out his webpage at www.ironsantiques.com. Q: I recently found a coin that celebrated

the Chicago World’s Fair of 1933. The design includes what appears to be a Nazi swastika, odd for such a coin. Can you explain why this would have been used to promote an American event? — James, Wood River, IL. A: Before the symbol was co-opted by Hitler, it was used in many ancient religions, including ones in India and China. In America, it often was used in Native American designs in both textiles and pottery patterns. Q: I have a partial set of sterling flatware in the Trousseal pattern. Can you tell me anything about this pattern and how much my set is worth? — Susan, St. Louis, MO A: The pattern was introduced by the International Silver Company in 1934. Typical prices in this pattern are fork, $40; butter spreader, $18, soup spoon, $30, and sugar tongs, $50. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Montgomery County Public Health honoring Betty Sanders Dental Health Educator Montgomery County Public Health honors Dental Hygienist Betty Sanders for her dedication and commitment to the children of Montgomery County in teaching Dental Health. Betty has been a Dental Hygienist for 30 years and in the role of Dental Educator for Montgomery County Public Health for 14 years. The Rural Health Education Network for Delaware, Otsego, Montgomery, and Schoharie Counties (RHENDOMS) has sponsored the work of all the Dental Educators in each of these counties including Betty. RHENDOMS mission is to address the

under-served rural community health needs through education. Dental Health Education is offered to all pre-school through 3rd grade children in public and private schools in the four county region. Children learn about oral hygiene and visiting the dentist. Each child receives a takehome bag with toothbrush, paste and floss, as well as other informational items. By making this a positive experience, we hope to decrease their fears about going to the dentist, and to help them develop good oral hygiene habits at a young age. “So far Betty has reached 739

St. Johnsville Springfest and Fort Plain Street Fair benefit communities by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Many events are happening around the Mohawk Valley, with St. Johnsville and Fort Plain among the villages participating in showcasing their communities. The fair not only offered a good variety of Wheelock rides for kids of all ages, but also popular live music and local vendors all three days. “With the economy the way it is, we try to offer everyone a little bit of entertainment,” stated Perry. “We work on this pretty much

all year long and we book the rides a year in advance.” Katovitch noted that this year even the weather was cooperating whereas last year they had a good soaking for the fair. Other Fort Plain events correlated with the Street Fair. True Value hosted an Open House; Sportsman's Den held a crossbow show, the VFW was

open and serving a variety of foods throughout the fair, and the Fort Plain Methodist Church hosted a Pancake Dinner. Katovitch says that the Fort Plain Community Activities Council also is responsible for the planning of the Last

Picking the perfect ceiling paint color Most people paint their ceiling white or off-white because these shades reflect light and coordinate well with other colors. Ceilings, however, can be one of the best places to use a fun splash of color. High ceilings can benefit from a lightly tinted color to make

rooms that might appear too large and expansive feel more human and cozy. Painting low ceilings with semi-gloss paint, on the other hand, will make them seem higher. Crown molding in a darker color can draw the eye upwards.

The secret to a great, low-cost summer vacation: Get outside (ARA) — Fresh air, sunshine, activities for the whole family, and new sights to see: outdoor vacations offer many advantages, including the opportunity to do more for less money. Budget-conscious families looking for a memo-

rable summer vacation may be concerned about the impact funding a trip might have on their credit. It’s one thing to use a credit card for extra protection when booking hotels or airfare, but another if you won’t be able to pay off the cost of the vacation

right away. Fortunately, camping, visiting national parks, and other outdoor vacations can offer a cost-effective alternative to popular summer trips such as a famous theme park or a week at a beach resort. If you’re interested in

the possibility of an outdoor vacation, consider these perks: Lower lodging costs Staying at a national or state park or in a familyfriendly campground often costs far less than a few nights in a hotel room at a popular destination. Many national and state parks offer lodging options. Even at popular destinations, like the Grand Canyon, lodging choices are often less costly than in nearby commercial ventures.

Vast variety Whether you’re interested in amazing sights, fun activities or savoring some history, chances are you’ll find what you’re looking for in a national park. America’s National Park System has more than 397 parks, monuments, battlefields, military parks, historical parks, historic sites, lakeshores, seashores, recreational areas, scenic rivers and trails in every state (except Delaware).

Educational opportunity Whether you’re taking in some history or just reveling in the beauty of nature, an outdoor vacation offers a wealth of educational opportunities to get your creative juices flowing. Many popular sites are linked to our nation’s history, and the great outdoors also teach lessons about science, natural history and health. Another option is to participate in a trip sponsored by a nonprofit like the Sierra Club. Not only will your family reap the fun and learning of an organized outdoor trip, your vacation money can help support important environmental work done by such organizations. Learn more about Sierra Club outings on the organization’s website, www.sierraclub.org.
