Hello Again, Growing up, we’ve heard all of the gotcha’s. “Watch out! The bogeyman will get you,” or Henny Penny’s “Run! The sky is falling in.” Everyone knows the earth is flat—so Columbus don’t sail your three ships over the edge…and one of my favorites, in more ways than one—“Don’t eat one of those big red fruit called tomatoes. If you do, you’ll die. They are poisonous.” We of the modern, educated, elite, sophisticated class laugh at such nonsense, don’t we? We would never accept as true or even partially true, such sayings. However it seems that some of us need our gotcha’s. If we read and accept the great statements of wisdom or gotcha’s expounded by those in the know, (Lord help us how we came to know), we rush out and buy signs and plant them on our lawns, screaming words of wisdom such as “No Drill-No Spill and “No Fracking.” Yesterday while rambling on my blue three-wheeled motorcycle, (which was burning gas and lubricated with oil), I spotted one of those black and white—Henny Penny gotcha signs: No Drill-No Spill. Being a spooky type, I was afraid some one would not see me reading the sign— so I slowed down, stopped my gasoline motorbike and took a nice long peek at the sign. You will never guess what I saw—Don’t try, I will tell you. In the driveway next to the house sat two of those unspeakable oil product-devouring demons: a pick-up truck and an SUV. Loaded on the pick-up, a gas powered 4-wheeled R.V. The lady of the house was out enjoying the weather while riding on a gas-powered lawnmower. It was a real beauty with at least a 60” cut. I do not exactly recall—but I assume the house and garage were wired for electricity. We are constantly, via electric company advertising, made aware of the fact, most of their electric power producing equipment is fired up by petroleum products. If our country is not allowed to drill for oil, maybe we can sell humor to the oil-producing countries of the world. Sell humor! Why not try? We are giving it away free of charge now. All of the oil-producing countries of the world must be laughing all the way to their banks with our money and some, such as China, lends it back to us with interest due. It seems liberal newspapers, magazines, TV, and radio moguls do not want U.S. citizens to learn what is happening in the United States.

Original Valley PENNYSAVER • June 2, 2012

Page 7

Simply stated, this country may be on the verge of a great economic boom. Natural gas supplies, which have come mostly from hard-to-reach shale formations tapped by the controversial fracking process have pushed domestic oil and gas output to its highest level in years and years. The United States is now a net exporter of finished petroleum products. This ever-increasing sign of new prosperity is not merely a turnaround for the United States but for the entire world. Oil money coming into the United States rather than leaving could reverse our entire economy. A boom era may be at our doorstep. Two bits of info to think about—with a big, big question why? New York State has stopped fracking and our president appears to be totally against oil drilling— fracking—pipe lines. I repeat, why? Sad but true? A banker is a friend who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining and wants it back the minute it begins to rain. So much for modern medicine: The pretty young farm girl had just broken off her engagement with a young doctor. “Do you mean to tell me,” exclaimed her girlfriend, “that he actually asked you to return all his presents?” “Not only that,” she replied. “But he sent me a bill for 44 house calls.” I bet he wanted 44 co-pays too. A stolen kiss frequently leads to marriage, which proves crime doesn’t pay. Today is the day we waited for yesterday. If yesterday we spent time in conversation with friends, family, and the Lord—we laid the groundwork for a great day. Let’s plan for tomorrow. Remember the Lord gave us life and this day.

Fred Lee and the Lee Family

St. Johnsville honors local WWII Veterans

St. Johnsville American Day Parade. by Elizabeth A. Tomlin “I think St. Johnsville has one of the largest number of living WWII Veterans in the area,” reported Alan “Charlie” Weaver. “We just want to honor those men for all they did for us.” Weaver, 3rd Vice Commander for St.

Legion Morris J. Edwards Post 168 presented a united front in the Memorial Johnsville’s Morris J. Edwards American Legion Post 168 was instrumental in making that happen. He not only organized a reunion for those men on Saturday, May 26, but also helped organize what village resident Barbara Stagliano calls “one of

the best Memorial Day Parades we have ever had in St. Johnsville!” The weekend started off with the WWII Veterans being invited to meet at WWII Veteran Leo Mancini’s to visit and sign a

WWII replica motorcycle owned by Chris Arduini. “I collect WWII memorabilia,” Arduini said. “My grandfather is one of the WWII Veterans here today, and it WWII page A36

Little Friends Nursery School field trip to Schoharie Valley Farm On Wednesday May 23, Little Friends Nursery School of Canajoharie had a field trip to Schoharie Valley Farm (aka The Carrot Barn). The kids had a wonderful time seeing the cooler where they keep all the veggies and all the beautiful flowers. Farmer Richard even let them transfer lettuce plants that they got to take home. It was a very splendid time. The children enjoyed the trip and hope to go back next year. Pictured is Farmer Richard and our special little friends the smiles on their faces says it all. Whatchamacallits A history buff might recognize the stamp pictured here, owned by Willis “Skip” Barshied Jr., as a letter seal. Seals of this type were most commonly used with melted wax to seal documents and correspondence. The use of seals dates to the dawn of the civilizations that arose in what is known as the fertile crescent that included Mesopotamia in modern day Iraq. Wax seals were used to identify the sender by taking the place of a signature. They also served to aut henticate a document and to verify under what authority the document was issued. It took two committees and six years — from 1776 to 1782 before a design for the Great Seal of the United States was settled on and adopted. When used to seal a letter, a

seal proved that the correspondence had not been opened before it reached its intended recipient. With the introduction of the “gummed”

envelope in the 19th century, the need for seals was gone. It was around this time that the seal began to be used more as a decorative embellishment.

PROVOST BROS. INC

To Property Owners in the Canajoharie School District: This is a difficult letter to write, knowing that some will construe it as being against public libraries. What I am against is the apparent financial mismanagement of the Canajoharie, or should I say, Arkell Library and Art Gallery. How did they get to the point of being $100,000 short in meeting their budgetary requirements? That they have been running behind the last few years and needing to use reserves, smacks of the problem originating in the huge expansion of the art gallery, encouraged by the Arkell Foundation of a few years ago. Was there ever a projection as to what the expanded complex would cost to run and where the additional funds would come from? Or was this simply a case of, “Build it and they will come!” Correct me if I am wrong, but did the Library or Arkell ever ask the property owners whether we wanted expanded facilities? Did “they” ask us if the old high school should be unceremoniously torn down? Who gave the School Board the right to tax property owners for projects basically unrelated to the running of the school? The Library Board laments that Arkell’s contribution is only $50,000. Another heard comment is that Arkell is not being as “free” with their money. This may well be related to what has been happening in the stock market and their investments therein. There again, do not come back to the property owners to cover investment mistakes, at every level, made by respective boards and “managers.” As to other communities doing the “library tax,” in most cases those communities do not have a foundation dangling irresistible money in front of them to over-extend themselves. Funding for basic library services is justifiable, but unfortunately this is not the case in Canajoharie. As usual, there are more questions than answers. This means the proposal should be voted down on June 5, in polling at the Library from 12:00 to 9:00.

Page 36 WWII from A12 seemed like a good idea to have all the veterans sign the motorcycle.” Arduini had brought a gold paint pen for the veterans to use in signing the bike. “Some of these men haven’t been together to talk like this in 40 years,” Arduini remarked. Although only 10 of the 15 WWII Veterans were able to show up for Saturday’s reunion, 12 made it to participate in the parade, and one, 93-year-old Gordon Davis, was even able to wear his original Army uniform! A banner displaying the names of all 15 WWII Veterans was donated by Legion Post 168 and carried by St. Johnsville High School students Robert Jaiken and Jordon Hogan. About 60 American Legion Post 168 veterans were involved in the parade, with 35 marching, 13 riding, 10 more helping behind the scenes, and the 12 WWII Veterans. Fuccillo’s Autoplex in Nelliston, Larry Dingman and Rosine Cunnan donated convertibles for the Legion to use in transporting the WWII Veterans in the parade, and John Tennis donated WWII vehicles. Bob Loccia, who just turned 70, was one of the notable veterans marching in the Memorial Day Parade. “Loccia is a veteran of four different wars,” says Weaver, “He hasn’t missed a single year of marching in the parade since 1968!” Loccia spent 6 years in active duty as a Marine and then was with the Army National Guard for 25 years. “He is very proud to serve his country!” Weaver said. The parade ended with a salute at St. Johnsville’s Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Park where the veterans joined in singing ‘Proud to be an American’. Each WWII Veteran received a special hat from the Legion, recognizing their service to our country. Photos by Julie Enos

New Herkimer County Trails Guide released on National Trails Day by Adam Hutchinson, Executive Director, Herkimer County HealthNet This Saturday, June 2, is National Trails Day. I encourage you to celebrate this day by picking up the new Herkimer County Trails Guide and walk, stroll, hike, bike, and exercise on one of the many beautiful trails that Herkimer County has to offer. Enjoying your local trails is a great way to increase your health by elevating your heart rate, strengthening your muscles, and expanding your lungs. With obesity rates on the rise, this form of

exercise is a great way to keep some weight, not to mention is very affordable. Herkimer County HealthNet (HCHN) along with other agencies in New York State administers the Creating Healthy Places (CHP) Grant to Live, Work, and Play, funded by the New York State Department of Health. This grant aims to prevent obesity and type 2 diabetes. One of the projects that we are working on in this effort is increasing the awareness of Herkimer County’s trails and the utilization of them.

Herkimer County HealthNet is also seeking volunteers to help distribute guides throughout Herkimer County. Currently, copies of the NEW Herkimer County Trails Guide are available at the following locations: • Herkimer County Health Net, 320 North Main Street, Herkimer • Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce, 420 East German Street, Herkimer • Village of Ilion Offices, 49
