June 16, 2012 Hello Again, In an early edition of “Hello Again,” the subject of whether this publication should comment on politics or religion was covered. The statement was published for all to read that “Hello Again” would defend the Christian belief and the American way of life and I would not be ashamed to do so. With that, realizing I may offend some, hoping for understanding and not to offend, I offer the following: We—the citizens and guests of this great country—have been continually blessed with a republican form of government and capitalistic enterprise, anchored by religious freedom, and by a living belief in God. By that I mean, we choose or vote for individuals to represent us in governing our villages, towns, counties, states and nation. This is known as a republic, or a representative form of government as opposed to a king, dictator, or any self-perpetuating form of government. Why am I writing about this today? Simply stated, we have those in positions of authority in government and professors in our colleges who are strongly advocating change. From the time of the Pilgrims and carried forward, our forefathers desired, understood, and demanded that we—under God—must and would have a representative form of government, absolutely not as socialist, not a king or dictator or uncontrollable body but instead a government of “We the People” under God with the government under us, by us, and for us. Not that we are here to support the government while those in authority rule us. It has been written, first freedom, then change to socialism and then to communism. Our president certainly appears to be in favor of a socialist form of life for this country. With nearly every statement, he appears to be advocating big government—that is government which should and would be in charge of education, health, welfare, law enforcement and business. What’s next? Religion? During the past few months Washington, D.C., under Mr. Obama’s leadership, has tried to take over control of finance, the auto industry, national health and education. State and even city governments are handing down more regulations. New York City’s government now wants to dictate the size of sweetened soft drinks. Does that seem silly?—It’s not. Do you want your government to actually dictate to you what you can eat or drink? I trust you are starting to understand and hope you agree. First let’s try to gain a layman’s handle on socialism. According to the American Heritage Dictionary socialism is: Any of various theories or systems of social organization in which the

means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government. Now let’s boil that down to its simplest meaning for you and me. If you are an employee, your actual boss would be the government. If you think you own a business, the government will actually be “the manager.” A few years ago I read an article about a young man in Russia who had to apply to the government to receive permission to change his job or position in the same state-controlled factory. Four years later the government sent him a form asking him to explain why he wanted to change. So, you ask, “What’s so important now about this chatter concerning socialism or free enterprise?” My answer is: Listen to television news, read newspapers and magazines. If they are expounding more government offerings or control, they are pushing for socialism. First bigger government, which becomes socialism and the next change— communism. I suggest we all really think this through, register and be ready to vote this coming November. Question for each of us to answer: Do we want to have the government run our lives or do we want to stick with the old-fashioned American way of life? We, the voting American citizens, will run our businesses and government. Believe it or not, in November the decision will be in our hands. Socialism does not work because it provides no real incentive to work hard or produce. People stop, or never start, exerting themselves and become dependent on the state. Two village boys were chatting at the hot dog stand. The youngest one said, “I had a long talk about girls with my father. He doesn’t know much about them either.” The socialist said, “Hard work won’t kill a fellow if he can stay far enough away from it.” As a new hired hand was being introduced to the other farm workers, he asked “Is the boss as mean as they say?” “Yeah, he is, but he’s fair. He’s mean to everybody.” I was riding my three-wheeled Spyder motorcycle along the New Turnpike Road and asked a farm lady selling homemade bread if she had any strawberries. She said, “No, but our neighbors up Baum Road have some.” What a wonderful way of life we share in this area. Real homemade bread, garden fresh strawberries, and neighbors helping each other. If the Good Lord gave me a choice of living anywhere in his world, my answer would be “Thank you Lord, I am now where I want to be. Right here in our valley.” Fred Lee and the Lee Family

Revolutionary 2 Part Formula Bring space-age technology to your driveway and save water at the same time. Snap Seal is easy to use. 1. Washing your car is optional, though not needed. (A light rinsing may be necessary to remove larger dirt particles.) 2. Apply Snap Seal Waterless Wash & Wax to the vehicle. Apply it right over any dirt, grime or bug marks. 3. Evenly spread it around with a clean cloth. 4. Wipe it off with another dry, soft cotton cloth. It’s that simple. How it Works... Our super-secret formula does not scratch the vehicles delicate surface because each application completely encapsulates dirt particles with a protective coating of wax. When you wipe the wax with a polishing cloth, a hard waxed surface remains, and it lasts and lasts. Apply it any time in any way. Back and forth, up and down, circles, sideways - it doesn’t matter. Use Snap Seal Liquid Wax in the sun or shade. Contains Carnauba Wax

Whatchamacallits In the long evolution of sleeping comfort, from leaves gathered into a pile to today’s memory foam and Sleep Number beds, one type of bed was the standard for about 300 years. The simple rope bed reigned in bedrooms from the 16th Century until the late 1800s. A rope bed is made by lacing ropes or strips of leather across a bed frame to support the mattress. Prior to that, beds were shallow chests into which the bedding was placed. Resting a mattress on a lattice work of rope was the first attempt to soften a bed’s foundation. A major drawback of this type of bed was that the ropes stretched out and needed to be frequently tighten to ensure firm support and a better night’s sleep. To
accomplish these adjustments, a key like this one, from the antiques collection of Willis “Skip” Barshied, was used. Tightening the ropes to increase comfort gave rise to
an expression that’s still in use today; “sleep tight.” In 1865, the first coil spring mattress was patented and as they became more popular, rope beds fell out of favor.

Time to stop clowning around for Happy Clown Nursery School by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Ryann Young, proprietor of Happy Clown Nursery School, presented a heartfelt, farewell speech to the parents of her 2012 graduating class. “Thank you all so much for allowing me to share this very special time in your child’s life,” Young stated. “They are my last class in a 31-year teaching career.” Young started Happy Clown in the basement of the former Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Feb, 1981, before moving to its current location in Dec, 1986. “What has Happy Clown meant to me? Everything!” Young stated emphatically. “My entire adult life has been spent there! When I started I was newly married and had no children, now — four children later — I am ending, as my fourth child enters her senior year of college.” Young says she was
very fortunate to have a career where she was available to be with her own children before and after school, and attend their school functions. “I feel I’m a better person for having had Happy Clown in my life,” she said. “I have truly been blessed by all of the families and children whose lives I have been a part of.” Young also credited staff members who worked with her over the past years. Kristen Harrington began as a high school junior through a VoTech Program in 2001 and continued for 11 years. Johanna Gordon came to Happy Clown in 1997 as a student from FMCC looking for a place to do her internship and has remained a part of Happy Clown in some capacity ever since. Gordon recently obtained her Master’s Degree in Education. “Doreen Shariff was a wonderful help this

Marcy Reese (Matis) and Dawn Montanye became a part of the Happy Clown family for seven years when they worked for United Cerebral Palsy
Happy Clown graduates (in alphabetical order) Riley Battisti, Tyler Barnes, Jordan Brown, Ian Burns, Owen Castellano, Emma Cook, Ethan DesRochers, Cris-John Fuhs, Sofia Heiser, Cody Hyney, Alexander Lamphere, Addison Michalak, Liam Rockwell and Marius Soto line up and sing “Our Flag.”
and became a partner at Happy Clown.” Young also recalls partnering with Canajoharie Central School when they first began their Universal Pre-K Program. She has acted as a mentor to numerous students from FMCC, HCCC and Cobleskill, as well as students from Canajoharie and Fort Plain who worked at Happy Clown as part of their curriculum. Young also thanks local folks. “I cannot say thank you enough to all of the businesses, fire departments, police departments and local farms who opened their doors to us for field trips over all these years.” Young concludes, “So, as this year’s tee shirts say, ‘Now it’s time to stop clowning around!” We wish her a happy retirement!

Little Friends Nursery School visits Fort Frye On Friday, June 8, Little Friends Nursery School had a picnic at Fort Frye. We are lucky that Mrs. Beth Shostek is one of our teachers and let us have a fun time at her house. The 1689 cabin of Hendrick Frey was palisaded by the British in 1702 and used until 1713 during the Queen Anne’s War, in 1739 replaced with loopholed stone building and used during the French and Indian War in the 1750s. It is such a beautiful piece of history and we are glad the children are able to
experience it. Little Friends playing in the yard

Chow Line: Lots of fruits, veggies might stem diabetes by Martha Filipic I’ve been told that I’m “pre-diabetic.” Should I cut way back on fruit? I know it contains a lot of sugar. First, for individual health-related advice, it’s always best to talk directly to your doctor or, in cases like this, a registered dietitian, who could work with you personally
to examine your normal day-to-day eating patterns and help you make improvements. But if you’re like most Americans, you likely aren’t eating enough fruit. And your question indicates that you have the common misconception that eating sweets causes diabetes. It doesn’t. It’s
caused by the body’s inability to handle blood sugar, but that comes from many kinds of foods, not just those that taste sweet. In fact, a recent study published in the journal Diabetes Care indicates that people who eat a lot of fruits and vegetables — and, even more impor-

tantly, a lot of different kinds of fruits and vegetables — may have a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The study included more than 3,700 adults in the United Kingdom and lasted 11 years. The researchers found: • Eating more fruits and vegetables (about six servings a day) was associated with a 21 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared with eating just two servings a day. • People who ate a wide variety of fruits and vegetables — averaging 16 different types over the course of a week — were about 40 percent less likely to develop diabetes than those who averaged just eight different types. It’s important to note that the study doesn’t necessarily prove cause and effect. But it is one more good reason why you might want to incorporate a wider variety of fruits and vegetables into your diet. Here are some ideas to do so: • Even if you don’t normally pack your lunch, pack a snack to have mid-
morning or mid-afternoon. It can be one of the standards: an apple, orange, banana, grapes, baby carrots, celery strips or red pepper strips, or something totally new. Shop the produce section with a fresh eye to see
the lettuce and topping with fresh blueberries or strawberries. For more on the benefits of fruits and vegetables and ideas to include more in your diet, see the Fruits and Veggies Matter website, a partnership of
what you might want to try. • Buy large containers of vanilla or plain yogurt and, as you prepare individual servings, top with one-quarter to one-half cup of fresh or frozen berries. • Add variety to salads by including spinach with

Estate and Funeral Planning Guide What kind of funeral do you want? Every family is different, and not everyone wants the same type of funeral. Funeral practices are influenced by religious and cultural traditions, costs and personal preferences. These factors help determine whether the funeral will be elaborate or simple, public or private, religious or secular, and where it will be held. They also influence whether the body will be present at the funeral, if there will be a viewing or visitation, and if so, whether the casket will be open or closed, and whether the remains will be buried or cremated. Among the choices you’ll need to make are whether you want one of these basic types of funerals, or something in between. “Traditional,” fullservice funeral This type of funeral, often referred to by funeral providers as a “traditional” funeral, usually includes a viewing or visi-
tation and formal funeral service, use of a hearse to transport the body to the funeral site and cemetery, and burial, entombment or cremation of the remains. It is generally the most expensive type of funeral. In addition to the funeral home’s basic services fee, costs often include embalming and dressing the body; rental of the funeral home for the viewing or service; and use of vehicles to transport the family if they don’t use their own. The costs of a casket, cemetery plot or crypt and other funeral goods and services also must be factored in. Direct burial The body is buried shortly after death, usually in a simple container. No viewing or visitation is involved, so no embalming is necessary. A memorial service may be held at the graveside or later. Direct burial usually costs less than the “traditional,” full-
service funeral. Costs include the funeral home’s basic services fee, as well as transportation and care of the body, the purchase of a casket or burial container and a cemetery plot or crypt. If the family chooses to be at the cemetery for the burial, the funeral home often charges an additional fee for a graveside service.
Direct cremation The body is cremated shortly after death, without embalming. The cremated remains are placed in an urn or other container. No viewing or visitation is involved, although a memorial service may be held, with or without the cremated remains present. The remains can be kept in the home, buried or placed
in a crypt or niche in a cemetery, or buried or scattered in a favorite spot. Direct cremation usually costs less than the “traditional,” fullservice funeral. Costs include the funeral home’s basic services fee, as well as transportation and care of the body. A crematory fee may be included or, if the funeral home does not own the
crematory, the fee may be added on. There also will be a charge for an urn or other container. The cost of a cemetery plot or crypt is included only if the remains are buried or entombed. Funeral providers who offer direct cremations also must offer to provide an alternative container that can be used in place of a casket.
Veterans Cemeteries All veterans are entitled to a free burial in a national cemetery and a grave marker. This eligibility also extends to some civilians who have provided military-related service and some Public Health Service personnel. Spouses and dependent children also are entitled to a lot and marker when buried in a national cemetery. There are no charges for opening or closing the grave, for a vault or liner, or for setting the marker in a national cemetery. The family generally is responsible for other expenses, including transportation to the cemetery. For more information, visit the Department of Veterans Affairs’ website at www.cem.va.gov. To reach the regional Veterans office in your area, call 1-800-8271000. In addition, many states have established state veterans cemeteries. Eligibility requirements and other details vary. Contact your state for more information. Beware of commercial cemeteries that advertise socalled “veterans’ specials.” These cemeteries sometimes
offer a free plot for the veteran, but charge exorbitant rates for an adjoining plot for the spouse, as well as high fees for opening and closing each grave. Evaluate the bottom-line cost to be sure the special is as special as you may be led to believe. Source: www.ftc.gov

Estate and Funeral Planning Guide Funeral costs Funeral costs include: 1. Basic services fee for the funeral director and staff The Funeral Rule allows funeral providers to charge a basic services fee that customers cannot decline to pay. The basic services fee includes services that are common to all funerals, regardless of the specific
arrangement. These include funeral planning, securing the necessary permits and copies of death certificates, preparing the notices, sheltering the remains, and coordinating the arrangements with the cemetery, crematory or other third parties. The fee does not include charges for optional services or merchandise.

2. Charges for other services and merchandise These are costs for optional goods and services such as transporting the remains; embalming and other preparation; use of the funeral home for the viewing, ceremony or memorial service; use of equipment and staff for a graveside service; use of a hearse or limousine; a
casket, outer burial container or alternate container; and cremation or interment. 3. Cash advances These are fees charged by the funeral home for goods and services it buys from outside vendors on your behalf, including flowers, obituary notices, pallbearers, officiating clergy, and organ-
ists and soloists. Some funeral providers charge you their cost for the items they buy on your behalf. Others add a service fee to their cost. The Funeral Rule requires those who charge an ex-
and services you have selected when you are making the arrangements. If the funeral provider doesn’t know the cost of the cash advance items at the time, he or she is required to give you a writ-
tra fee to disclose that fact in writing, although it doesn’t require them to specify the amount of their markup. The Rule also requires funeral providers to tell you if there are refunds, discounts or rebates from the supplier on any cash advance item. Calculating the Actual Cost The funeral provider must give you an itemized statement of the total cost of the funeral goods
ten “good faith estimate.” This statement also must disclose any legal, cemetery or crematory requirements that you purchase any specific funeral goods or services. The Funeral Rule does not require any specific format for this information. Funeral providers may include it in any document they give you at the end of your discussion about funeral arrangements.
