Revolutionary 2 Part Formula Bring space-age technology to your driveway and save water at the same time. Snap Seal is easy to use. 1. Washing your car is optional, though not needed. (A light rinsing may be necessary to remove larger dirt particles.) 2. Apply Snap Seal Waterless Wash & Wax to the vehicle. Apply it right over any dirt, grime or bug marks. 3. Evenly spread it around with a clean cloth. 4. Wipe it off with another dry, soft cotton cloth. It’s that simple.
MOVING SALE: Everything Must Go! July 7th & 8th, 9:00am-5:00pm at 917 E. Lykers Road, Sprakers YARD SALE: Thursday thru Saturday, July 12th, 13th, 14th, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, rain or shine. Children's toys & clothes, household items, Home Interior pictures, exercise machine and lots, lots more. 151 Fisk Hill Rd., Fort Plain
How it Works... Our super-secret formula does not scratch the vehicles delicate surface because each application completely encapsulates dirt particles with a protective coating of wax. When you wipe the wax with a polishing cloth, a hard waxed surface remains, and it lasts and lasts. Apply it any time in any way. Back and forth, up and down, circles, sideways - it doesn’t matter. Use Snap Seal Liquid Wax in the sun or shade. Contains Carnauba Wax

Photo by Lorna Quinn The Andy Griffith Show Fun Facts
• Andy and Barney's squad car was a Ford Galaxie. The cars were supplied free of charge by a nearby Ford dealer, and whenever the newest model came out, it was sent to the studio and the old one was returned to the dealer who re-painted it and sold it. Altogether, there were about 10 different Ford Galaxies used throughout the run of the series. • Aunt Bee was originally from Morgantown, West Virginia • The character of Helen Crump was supposed to be a one-shot. That is why they gave the character an unpleasant sounding name. But the producers were so impressed with Aneta Corsaut's performance and her rapport with Andy Griffith that they made her a regular cast member. • In the first season, Barney Fife courted several women including Thelma Lou. • Barney Fife kept one bullet in his shirt pocket and his citation booklet in his cap. • Before Aunt Bee moved in with Andy, he had a housekeeper named Rose. Andy performed her wedding ceremony in the first episode. • Opie Taylor was named for Opie Cates, a prominent band leader of the 1930s and 1940s whom Andy Griffith and Sheldon Leonard, the show’s producer, both admired. July 7 , 2012 Hello Again, The Secretary of Agriculture and a member of his staff were out for a governmentpaid-for plane ride. The secretary unwrapped a $100 bill from a roll in his pocket and said, “I think I will throw this $100 bill out of the window and at least one farmer will be happy.” His aid said, “Wouldn’t it be better to throw two $50 bills and make two farmers happy?” With that the pilot said, “Why don’t both of you jump out the window and make all of the farmers happy?” A farmer said, “My brother doesn’t accomplish anything.” His friend asked, “Doesn’t he work for the government?” “That’s what I meant — he doesn’t do anything.” The Lord’s Prayer contains 56 words. Lincoln’s Gettysburg address 260; the Ten Commandments, 300; and our President’s Health Program several thousand. Who said big government isn’t better at being big? Just think, thousands of words and no one knows what it says. Now that it is law, I’m afraid we will learn. By now I am reasonably sure you realize the writer of “Hello Again” is sincerely interested in the future of our nation. After listening to too many radio and T.V. speeches, years of reading newspapers and magazines, all offering their selfservicing politically biased opinions, I have finally figured out what politics is all about. Politics is the art of obtaining money from those who have it (personally rich individuals and corporations) and votes from the poor on the pretext of protecting each from the other. In a earlier “Hello Again” I mentioned that we kids did not dare to act down in the dumps or gloomy or Mom would haul out her large wooden spoon and a bottle of cod liver or castor oil. At first sight of that combination and before the threatening treatment, our faces would break out in ear-to-ear smiles, the sure cure. The U.S. economy appears to be suffering from the “down in the dumps with more than a healthy share of gloom.” Mom is gone now — I wonder if we could ask some of you moms to dig out a big wooden spoon and a couple of bottles of Mom’s elixir and head for Washington, stopping first at the White House. Just think, you might go down in history as the one who saved America. We American citizens and friends just celebrated the 4th of July. Hopefully remembering the one who created this huge

beautiful land and those who came before us, establishing our government. I wish we could all gather around a bonfire and hear someone sing or recite the following: “O Say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, what so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, over the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say does that star spangled banner yet wave, o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?” Burn some famous American hotdogs, sip some American created Pepsi or Coca Cola, hitch around the fire to keep the smoke out of our eyes, swat a few mosquitoes, sit quietly for a while, join hands and hearts together silently remembering, thanking our forefathers and our Heavenly Father. Or are we going to be the generation remembered in history as those who gave in to socialism, letting big government take over our lives, turning over our freedom to an evermore powerful, dominating government. I would rather have it said that I would sooner go to my grave than be part of those who sold out this wonderful country to socialism. Let’s share a thought. I am heading towards old age and I have very few people who dislike me. I have out-lived most of them. Thought number one for this week: You are the sum total of your own thoughts. If you think in negative terms, you will achieve negative results, but if you think in positive terms, you will achieve positive results. Man is mind and forever more he takes the tool of thought, shapes whatever he wills, brings forth a thousand joys a thousand ills. Thought number two for this week: Advice from he who created all, “Two can accomplish more than twice as much as one, for the results can be much better. If one falls, the other pulls him up; but if a man falls when he is alone, he is in trouble. And one standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer; three is even better, for a triple braided cord is not easily broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:9, 12). Remember tomorrow’s happiness depends on today’s shared friendship. Share in God’s friendship — respect for God is the beginning of wisdom. Say hi to your neighbor. Remember love conquers all. 40 years of planting seeds of the Gospel by Elizabeth A. Tomlin During the past 40 years many folks throughout the Mohawk Valley have had contact with Pastor Kenneth Dingman in one form or another. If not at a church service, then at a baptism, wedding, funeral or in his capacity as a Fort Plain fireman or volunteering in some other community event. With his wife Carol at his side, he has touched the lives of many, especially in the three Lutheran parishes that he has served these past years; St. Paul's, Fort Plain and St. James, Starkville both since 1972, and St. John's, Freysbush since 1988. On June 10, 2012, the Reverend Ken Dingman delivered his last sermon at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fort Plain, as he entered a new chapter in his life; retirement. “It is satisfying to see Ken accomplish this stage of his ministry,” remarked Carol, who has been married to Pr. Dingman for 45 years. “His min-
istry won't stop here, it is just changing directions.” Pastor Dingman was honored at a service St. John's Lutheran Church in Freysbush on June 3rd, with a standing-room-only crowd of about 200. “This is a time of joy and a time of sorrow,” Pastor Dingman said, as many tears were shed throughout the church. An elaborate retirement party hosted by the ladies groups of the churches followed the emotional church service. At the party, Pastor Dingman was presented with a handmade Amish rocking chair in appreciation of his many years of service. This rocker was a joint gift from the churches he had served. St. Paul's presented Carol Dingman with a matching rocker at the June 10th service. A covered dish dinner, hosted by the WELCA of St. Paul's, followed Dingman's final service there. Dingman stated that the most meaningful and important time
The Reverend Kenneth Dingman smiles down from the pulpit at St. John's, Freysbush before the retirement service. Photo by Elizabeth A. Tomlin of his service to the church was time spent with people at the time of death. “Being with parishioners at the moment of death and to see the calmness and the strength of faith of these people- it's been indeed a privilege,” Reverend Dingman said thoughtfully. “Now I am looking forward to catching up, weeding out, and spending time with my wife and family.”

VHS celebrates Nursing Home Week Valley Health Services annual Volunteer Breakfast was held during National Nursing Home Week to recognize the work of volunteers. One hundred and three (103) volunteers assisted residents and staff throughout 2011 and were treated to breakfast to thank them for the time and energy they devoted to VHS over the past year. This year’s special honorees, Ceil Morton and Kathy Cimino, were recognized for their particular dedication to the Valley Bells. Christine Shepardson, Activities Director, commented, “Ceil and Kathy are instrumental in assisting the Valley Bells in their travels throughout the
valley to entertain residents of other nursing homes. They willingly donate hours of their
free time helping our residents share music and their unique talents with others. They
are essential to the success of this program and we can’t thank them enough.”

To the Taxpayers in the Town of Palatine: It appears that, on a two or three year cycle, the Town Council is preparing to hit the “till” and taxpayers pockets to build a new town hall. Before i get too critical about this potential move, let’s see if some logic will support the reasoning behind this decision. Through the fall, winter, and spring months the town clerk is available 17 hours per week. Through the summer, it is at 10.5 hours. The town assessor is in her office 7.5 hours per week, year around. Court is usually held one night per week. It appears you would be hard pressed to argue that the town hall is open 40 hours per week. Do we really need an even larger building to sit empty most of the week? It is suggested that we need more room for public use and input, presumably at Council meetings. The problem with this is that public comment has been arbitrarily cut in half and the timing is such that there can be no comment on the current meeting until the next month. If there is a “hot button issue” that calls for public input, we already have a large town barn that can, and has been, converted to a meeting hall. The Town of Palatine, although rural in nature, and having agriculture as its major industry, has the bulk of its population in the Villages of Palatine Bridge and Nelliston. To locate a town hall miles away from the population centers could create a logistical problem for many village residents. The Town Justice Court, presently held in the Town Hall, and which in the past has struggled to cover the costs of its operation, may well be put out to pasture by the State which has designs of eliminating all or most of these kinds of town courts, so why build to accommodate them? As for trials, there have been 4 locally in the last 25 years. Regarding State requirements for town courts, I would submit that these may well be recommendations which vested interests like to call mandates! In closing let’s return to the use of the current facilities that seems to be the driving force in favor of a new town hall: record storage. And here I have to grudgingly admit, those records sit there, 24-7, 365 days a year, and yes there are those who feel records deserve the same creature comforts afforded to the rest of the building, even when it is sitting there, devoid of people and unused for the bulk of the work week. But please, surely there can be a facility built, on site, with a simple heater and a dehumidifier to keep the air dry and free of mold, for less than the half a million dollars a new town barn will eventually cost. So what do you think? If you think we need a new town hall, you are in luck, for you do not have to do a thing. If however, you think this is being done because others have done it first and they like to talk about their successes, then I would draw upon my Dad’s simple piece of logic to his sons growing up: Just because everybody else sticks their head in a bucket of water, does not mean you have to!” Want to be a part of government? Call or write your council people, call or write your town supervisor! Tell them we do not need or want a grand edifice to store our records.

Whatchamacallits The Romans are credited with creating the claw hammer as we know it today, however, the tool had a couple of weaknesses that still existed in the 1800s. The head of the hammer had a habit of flying off the handle. (Something quicktempered people are often advised not to do.) Also, wooden handles are prone to breaking. In the 1840s an inventor from South New Berlin, NY, came up with a solution that he patented in August of 1845. The wraparound claw reinforced the handle and prevented the head from sliding off. The example of this tool shown here is owned by Willis “Skip” Barshied. Not many examples of Anderson’s hammer exist today. That could be because of what hap-
pened in that same year of 1845 less than nine miles west of South New Berlin. Norwich blacksmith David Maydole began manufacturing a new type of hammer. Although he never patented the adze eye hammer head he invented, Maydole created a successful business. By the time of its founder’s death in
1892, the Maydole factory in Norwich was the largest manufacturer of hammers in the U.S. In 1942 the company received its largest order when the Navy purchased 100,000 hammers for use in its shipyards. A fire destroyed the Maydole factory in 1957 and the business never recovered.

Graduating High School Classes of 2012 commence with words of wisdom by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Along with most other high schools across the United States, 2012 graduations took place throughout the Mohawk Valley. Fort Plain High School Class of 2012 Valedictorian, Matt Soto, compared school life to a television series that has run through 13 years of shows. “This is our last episode,” he said at Fort Plain’s commencement ceremony. He advised attendees and classmates that “nothing is more important than family — and friends are family that we all have.” Fort Plain Superintendent Doug Burton spoke to the 50 graduates. “How is your attitude?” he asked. “Keep your attitude straight!” He advised the graduates that attitude and imagination are important tools for success and quoted
Albert Einstein, stating, “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” Over $120,000 in scholarships were distributed to Fort Plain’s graduating class. In St. Johnsville, Interim Superintendent Ralph Acquaro addressed the members of the 2012 graduating class, commenting on the similarities between his graduating class of 1964. “What is most different is the nature of opportunities,” he commented. “...You have the capacity, I urge you to retain the purposefulness.” Graduating senior Charles Nugent created a “Senior Class Time Capsule,” depicting each senior throughout their childhood and ending with their senior photo. This was one of the highlights of this intimate ceremony, in which each of the

graduating class delivered flowers to their tearful parents and guardians in the audience. Acquaro summarized the feelings of all family members and teachers in his statement, “Class of 2012, we trust you, we love you and we wish you Godspeed.” Nearly $28,000 in awards was distributed to St. Johnsville’s 28 graduates. With 100 graduates in the 2012 class, Canajoharie saw one of their largest graduating classes ever. This prompted officials to provide closed circuit viewing of the ceremony in the cafeThe Canajoharie Class of 2012 celebrates with Silly String and beach balls teria, which, unfortuat the end of the ceremony. nately, some parents

Rabies Vaccination Clinic Fultonville Animal Hospital, VanWagenen Dr., Fultonville, NY. 9-11 am. NYS Public Health Law requires that all dogs, cats and domestic ferrets shall have initial vaccinations administered against rabies no later than 4 mos. of age and stay up to date with revaccinations. Re-vaccinations are required one year later & a booster shot every three years. Pet owners should bring proof of their pet’s last rabies vaccination. This helps the veterinarian determine whether the pet will receive a one or three year vaccination; without it your pet will receive a one year vaccination only. To assure the safety of other pets

by Dr. Leonard Perry, Extension Professor, University of Vermont Generally pollen from plants, but also mold, dust, and even scents, can cause allergic reactions in some people. If you’re one of these, you don’t have to give up gardening during part of the season, or have to convert your landscape into silk flowers, gravel beds, and garden gnomes or plastic flamingos! Changing some gardening practices, or choice of plants, may be all that’s needed
to lessen the symptoms. According to WebMD.com, allergies can have some significant impacts on society. Ragweed pollen has increased in the last 10 to 15 years by four weeks, likely a result of global warming. As a result of hay fever, it’s estimated that 4 million workdays are lost each year. While one in five Americans have symptoms of allergies or asthma, 55 percent test positive to one or more allergens. Allergies, by one estimate,
cost the health care system and businesses $7.9 billion per year. Some asthma in children is induced by allergies. Most people see the yellow pollen on their car in spring or summer and think that’s what is causing allergies. But this relatively big, showy pollen such as from white pines isn’t really the culprit, but perhaps microscopic pollen that you don’t see, coming from other plants. Mowing lawns can stir up allergenic particles which may have settled and ac-
cumulated. So, if you find allergies more pronounced while mowing or nearby, a dust mask may help. Pollen from plants is the main culprit in gardening allergies, and the one we can do most about. Avoiding exposure to pollen, either from not planting certain plants, keeping a distance from those plants that produce irritating pollen, or using proper culture, are the best means to minimize allergy symptoms. Keeping pollen-producing trees pruned, and al-

lergenic shrubs sheared, both reduce pollen and allergies. Many don’t realize that the common boxwood shrub has flowers, and that these produce pollen that’s allergenic to some people. It blooms on second year-old wood, so keeping these pruned yearly keeps the inconspicuous flowers from forming. Other culture such as proper placement of plants, watering, fertilizer, and pest control will reduce insects and diseases. Some may be allergic to insects, as well as to disease spores. Author Thomas Ogren, in his book Allergy-Free Gardening, uses the phrase “proximity pollinosis”, which simply means that the closer you are to a plant producing allergenic pollen, the greater your exposure and better chance of symptoms. So not planting such plants near schools and schoolyards, patios, in public spaces, or under home windows that you open are all means to reducing allergenic pollen exposure. So what plants are best? As with most such questions, the answer is that it depends. Allergies, of course, vary with each person as well as with plants. Some plants with showy, large flowers may have larger pollen that doesn’t blow around and cause problems, yet others do (such as the catalpa, with large flowers but small pollen). Some plants may remain in a young or juvenile state, and never bloom. If trees have separate sexes, such as ash, willows, poplars, and some maples, the female plants won’t produce any pollen. Males of the hornbeam, silver, or box elder maples, junipers, and ginkgo are bad for pollen while their female plants are fine. (Yet the female ginkgo produces rather foul-smelling fruit so is seldom found.) One cultivar (cultivated variety) of a plant may produce allergenic pollen, yet another may be sterile or produce no allergenic pollen. “Seedless” trees
may not litter the ground, but they may be males that shed pollen as with some cultivars of White Ash. For red maples, ‘October Glory’ or ‘Autumn Glory’ are among the best for pollen, while you should avoid ‘Autumn Spire’, for instance. ‘Autumn Fantasy’ and ‘Indian Summer’ are a couple of good Freeman maples. Some sweet cherries (often the self-pollinating ones) may cause few problems, yet other cultivars may be highly allergenic to some people. Ogren has developed the Ogren Plant Allergy Scale (OPALS) which you can learn about in his book or website (www.allergyfree-gardening.com). It rates plants from 1 (low) to 10 (high) for pollen and allergies and is useful in determining what plants to buy if allergies are a concern, with an extensive plant listing in the book. The scale incorporates many factors, such as the pollen traits, and whether a plant causes allergies from odor or contact as well. Often, related plants may cause allergies. Perhaps 30 percent of those allergic to ragweed will also be allergic to the related goldenrod. Some daisy-type flowers in the composite family cause allergies, such as asters or chrysanthemums for some people. Flowers that are closed, and that bees or insects have to enter to pollinate such as snapdragons, generally don’t have pollen that blows about to cause allergies. While one to a few mildly allergenic plants may not cause problems, an abundance of them may cause hypersensitivity in some people. You can learn more about allergies and their causes from websites of the American Lung Association (www.lung.org ) or the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Imm u n o l o g y (www.aaaai.org). Sites online can be useful to track pollen counts and air quality (such as pollen.com or airnow.gov).

Donna’s day: creative family fun by Donna Erickson Craft a denim purse with jean pockets Recycle an old or outgrown pair of jeans and make a trendy pocket purse with a shoulder
strap that your preteen daughter can use this summer. It’s perfect for holding a comb, Chapstick and change when she’s out and about with friends. If she’s having a sleep-
over party, pull the supplies together and let the girls create and design their own purse to keep. It’s a super-simple makeand-take project everyone will remember.
To get started, cut out the back pocket from a pair of old jeans (the heavier the denim fabric, the better), cutting along the outside of the pocket. Cut very close to the pocket’s top stitching without cutting the pocket. Don’t limit yourself to blue jeans. For unusual purses, we used pockets from black, red and gold jeans we picked up for under a dollar at summer garage sales. For a shoulder strap, determine the length of cording or ribbon that suits the child’s height, and handstitch the ends to the top side edges of the pocket opening. Old woven sashes or cotton belts (with buckles cut off) also work well. Scout around the house for interesting
items to decorate the pocket purse. Attach the items with fabric glue, or assist young children with a glue gun. Here are some ideas for different styles: Jazzy: Glue a fringe trim to the side and bottom edges. Glue big rhinestones to the front of the purse for an eyecatching accent. Romantic: Glue a

square of cotton lace to the front. Add items from old costume jewelry, such as pearls, beads, silk flowers and a tiny brooch. Artsy: Use fabric paints to paint a picture or abstract design. Embellish with glued-on buttons, coins or charms. (c) 2012 Donna Erickson Distributed by King Features Synd.
