July 28, 2012 Hello Again, Over in the hills we enjoyed a privilege most Americans or English-speaking folk did not share. If you mentioned Webster, most would have thought you were referring to a Philly-type cigar or chaw of tobacco. In speaking or writing, if we could not conjure up the right word or phrase we would just make up a new one. Friends seemed to understand what the meaning was. I seem to be lost at finding the right word to express my thoughts so I will use a word right out of the hills - confugalty. What is a con-fu-galty or a confugalist? Even Webster’s New World Dictionary doesn’t know. Could it be a kissin’ cousin to a person who is preaching or writing about something he knows nothing about? When defending his position he could always say, “Must be I misunderstood what I meant I said.” Growing up over in the hills, our friends and neighbors did not hesitate to make up a word when talking if some word did not suit. When a lady was within earshot, the men folk would clean up their vocabulary in a hurry. I knew a preacher who must have been tempted on occasion to swear. When the situation called for a little extra bleep, bleep he would say, “Mack-is-frack-is.” Now we have invented or at least used a couple of words that Webster didn’t even know about. Confugality and confugalist. To start with, lets lay the groundwork for confugalist: a confugalist is one who preaches (talks) or writes about something he knows nothing about and swears it is the untarnished truth. A one-word example could be: confugalist=politician. Can you imagine how confusing it would become in Washington if a law was passed outlawing confugalism? A law that demanded all government workers from the president on down to sign an oath stating, “I swear on the good name of my grandmother, I will never again speak with a forked tongue or to stand with any political party when I believe the party is wrong. I will be an American first and not a party beast. I’m not holding this position for personal power; rather, because I love this country. Naturally in keeping with the practice of government control, I agree to take a polygraph (lie detector) test.” If this happened the White House and most of the major government buildings would be empty and could be converted into some other form of amusement hall. When the atomic bomb was being developed in the utmost possible secrecy at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the workers—most of whom had no idea what it was all about—often explained to questioners that “this is where the front of horses are made. Then we ship them to Washington for assembly.” Our friend in Florida often accuses my wife and I of being hillbillies. To further prove his point, he jokingly said, “Computers and phones have never been heard of in St. Johnsville. Like the American Indians, they are still using smoke signals,” continuing with, “One 4th of July in the early evening, Fred’s son Mark sent a smoke signal message to his father half expecting some form of agreement. He did not get an immediate reply. That same evening, the St. Johnsville fireworks in a forceful way lit up the valley sky. When they talked at their next gathering, Mark said, ‘I did not fully expect you to agree, but you didn’t have to get so fired up about it.’”

While discussing part of this Hello Again with my wife, concerning the confusion we all share with words and word meanings, our waitress with order pad in hand asked what I would like for breakfast. I said two patched eggs on buttered white toast with bacon, coffee, and water. I thought my request was simple and straightforward until both my wife and the waitress asked, “What is a patched egg?” and broke out in laughter. If I was writing to Dear Heloise I would ask, “If your wife and a waitress laughed at you— should you still have to pay for your wife’s breakfast and tip the waitress?” To get a little corny, “The yolk was on me.” Special message to F.D.M.: I read and re-read your letter several times and then read Hello Again. The point I was attempting to make was that if our federal government is allowed to grow and grow until it becomes all-powerful, would we not become sitting ducks for a Hitlertype person to grab control and then we would have to wave goodbye to the freedom and selfcontrol we have always shared? Thank you for your letter. Isn’t it wonderful that in the United States we can freely disagree without an all-powerful federal government watching and controlling our every move? The history of liberty is a history of limitations of governmental power, not the increase of it. When we resist the concentration of power, we are resisting the powers of death because concentration of power is what always precedes the destruction of human liberties. Two years ago Lee Publications’ promise to the Mohawk Valley was to “grow our business so that we could offer employment to more people.” Since that promise, the Original Valley Pennysaver was born along with four separate Dollar Saver editions covering Albany-Schenectady-Schoharie, Amsterdam, Saratoga, and FultonMontgomery. And now: Starting in early August, a new Pennysaver for Herkimer county and parts of Oneida county will be added. These new publications allowed Lee Publications to increase the number of hours for our employees and add twelve more new employees. To you, our readers and customers, we offer our thanks. Without you, none of this could have happened. Don’t go away without a chuckle and be sure to come back again. A farmer was talking about the dust bowl days and their impact on farmers. “Dad,” the boy asked, “what plans did you make for the future when you were my age?” “I determined to wear long pants my boy, and my plan worked. I wear my pants longer now than anyone I know.” Remember the famous movie line, “Make my day.” There is a better one: “Attend church on Sunday.” If you like to be around important people—the Lord says in his bible, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, I will be there.” May God continue to bring blessings into your life. Say hi to your neighbor and remember a stranger is a friend you haven’t met yet. Fred Lee and the Lee Family

Canajoharie girl requests gifts for animal shelter in lieu of birthday presents by Elizabeth A. Tomlin How many 11-year-olds do you know who would readily trade their birthday presents for animal food to feed the dogs and cats at the local animal shelter? Well, that is exactly what Alexz Lathers of Canajoharie did. “She wanted to do this last year but I didn’t think she was serious,” said Alexz’s mom Jessica. “With her only being 10 at the time, I couldn’t believe she wanted to give up her gifts.” And most children wouldn’t. This year when her mom asked her again what she wanted to do for her birthday, Alexz insisted that she wanted to have a party where everyone who was invited would be asked to bring a donation of dog or cat food — or something else that could be used for the animals at the local animal shelter. Alexz says that whenever she goes to the Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter, which she 11-year-old Alexz Lathers cuddles with pal Scooter at does every week, she feels sorry for the ani- her birthday party where she collected 400 pounds of animal food for the Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter in mals. “Everytime I go to the shelter I feel bad for Sprakers. Whatchamacallits Three weeks ago, Whatchamacallits featured a type of claw hammer designed to solve the problem of the head flying off the handle. This week, Willis “Skip” Barshied has come up with an even rarer speciman from his collection. As you may recall, the photo in the July 7 Whatchamacallits was of a hammer invented by Solomon Anderson of South New Berlin, NY. He patented his hammer in August of 1845. It solved the problem by extending the claw until it curved back to the handle and wrapped around it. It was noted that a more commercially successful hammer was invented by David Maydole of Norwich, also in 1845, and a mere 9 miles west of South New Berlin. This hammer is the type that is

most common today. The 1840s must have been a prolific time for inventors to improve on the claw hammer of the day. The hammer shown here was patented in 1848 by Leonard Powers of Edmeston, NY, which is about 16 miles

northwest of South New Berlin. This solution to the hammer head problem proved to be difficult to mass manufacture and is among the rarest around today. The hammer head in the photo is original and the complete tool is a reproduction.

Finding financial compatibility when planning your wedding (NAPSA) — According to a survey by Equation Research, more and more couples are taking a closer look at each other’s finances before walking down the aisle. The survey reported that 85 percent of brides say financial compatibility is important, with nearly half saying it is very important. More than six in 10 said that they started discussing marriage finances before their engagement. “Considering the challenging economic times that have impacted all Americans, it is not surprising that our research reveals that financial compatibility is carefully

considered by couples getting ready to exchange vows,” said Caryn Kaiser, general manager, Chase Card Services. Truly a family affair According to the results, new norms of paying for a wedding have been established against the backdrop of the current challenging economic times. The survey reveals that wedding costs are spread across the family. While an overwhelming 91 percent of brides contribute to the wedding, their contribution only accounts for 29 percent of the wedding on average. Three out of four (75 percent) parents of the

bride pay for a portion of the wedding, making up for approximately 33 percent of costs. Smart wedding planning The survey confirms the average cost of a wedding has declined slightly, as couples prioritize their spending and cut costs. Planning for a wedding requires multiple large purchases in a short period of time. Couples financing their wedding with credit cards appear to be putting a financial plan in place to borrow wisely. Nine in 10 of these credit card users expect to have paid off their wedding-related purchases within a year, including

more than a third who plan to pay everything off within three months. Looking at specific ways to trim costs, brides cite a variety of things they did or planned to cut back on to reduce the overall cost of the wedding. Sixty-four percent said they would scale back on invitations, 60 percent on flowers, 47 percent on the guest list and 41 percent on reception liquor. Just one in four brides, however, is willing to skimp on either the honeymoon or wedding attire. More information about Chase is at www.chaseblueprint.com.

Collecting by Larry Cox Vintage jewelry Q: I have some nice pieces of vintage jewelry, and I would like to determine how much they are worth. — Susan, Dubuque, Iowa A: Since gold has risen dramatically in value in recent years, most jewelry price guides are out-of-date. With that said, there are two that will give you a general idea of the current retail marketplace. Warman’s Vintage Jewelry: Identification and Price Guide by Leigh Leshner (Krause, $24.99) features more than 1,000 pieces of white metal and rhinestone jewelry with pricing and collector information. Especially helpful is the section

about the different settings and metals and history of rhinestones, including their cuts and shapes. A second, more basic book is Antique Trader Jewelry Price Guide by Kyle Husfloen (Krause, $21.99). It has more than 2,000 detailed listings arranged in alphabetical format by item name. These two books, both available at www.amazon.com, should get you started. Don’t forget established jewelry dealers in your city. Most are quite knowledgeable and helpful. Q: I have three books: “Readers Digest Fun Time,” published in 1949; “Fun with the Guitar” by Mel Bay (1958); and “Avant Garde,” a

monthly publication. Any value to a collector? — Delores, Sun City West, AZ A: No, no and maybe. Your first two titles would be of no interest to a book collector. The “Avant Garde” magazine was mostly notable because of the graphic designs of Herb Lubalin. The first

issue was published in January of 1968 and 13 editions followed. I found more than 150 Avant Garde magazines posted on eBay, most with no bids or selling in the $10 to $15 range. As with most collectibles, there are always exceptions. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Automotive Brake warning light circuit The brake system is divided into two hydraulic circuits. On most rear-wheel drive vehicles, it is divided so one circuit applies the front brakes and the other applies the

rear brakes. On front-wheel drive cars and minivans, the system is usually split diagonally. One circuit works the right front and left rear brake, and the other works the

left front and right rear brake. This is done for safety purposes so if one circuit loses all its brake fluid and fails, the vehicle will still have one remaining circuit to

apply two wheel brakes. Usually located on the master cylinder or the brake lines exiting the master cylinder is a “pressure differential” switch. Source: autos .yahoo.com

Automotive America needs inflation (NAPSA) — High gas prices should make more Americans become proinflation — at least when it comes to tire pressure. The facts The U.S. Department of Energy says properly inflated tires can improve fuel economy by 3.3 percent and save 1.2 billion gallons of gasoline nationally. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that underinflated tires contribute to more than 600 fatalities and 33,000 injuries a year. Yet fewer than one in five vehicles has four properly inflated tires, according to a Rubber Manufacturers Association tire pressure study. Worse, at least 15 percent of vehicles were found to have at least one tire underinflated by at least eight pounds per square inch (PSI). What you can do Heeding a few hints, however, can not only help motorists stay safe, but help them save money. • Good driving habits help keep tires in optimum condition (avoid fast starts, stops, potholes and curbs). • Take five minutes a month to check all your tires. Simple, regular maintenance can help drivers save as much as 12 cents

per gallon at the pump and keep tires rolling longer so they don’t need to be replaced as often. To be tire smart, you need to play your

PART — Pressure, Alignment, Rotation and Tread. These are the key elements of proper tire care. Pressure: Check tire pressure monthly with a tire gauge and inflate to vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure. Alignment: Misalignment of wheels can cause uneven and rapid tread wear.

Rotation: Rotate tires every 5,000 to 8,000 miles to help you achieve more uniform wear. Tread: Advanced and unusual wear can reduce the ability of tread to grip the road in adverse conditions. For more facts and tips, go to www. betiresmart.org.
