Page 6 August 4, 2012 Hello Again,
While writing for this issue of Hello Again, I read a sentence to a member of our editorial staff and asked, “Is the correct word effect or affect?” He quickly replied, “Impact.” Isn’t this an example of how we each have the right to our own opinion? What an impact, effect, or affect we could have in this greatest of all countries if we actually stood up for what we believe to be right? A few years ago if all of the American people spoke up and acted for what they believed in— do you think the privilege of prayer and religion would have been taken away from our children and driven out of our government offices and schools? In fact, we were not even allowed to vote. Who said so—was it you or a very small minority along with a few very powerful government officials who jammed it down our throats? Now some who were not even alive have accepted it as being American. It’s not, it’s anti-American. One more right we have lost. The divorce lawyer said to her female client, “I’m sorry but I haven’t succeeded in reaching a settlement with your husband that would be fair to him.” “Fair to him?” the client screamed. “I could have done that myself. What do you think I hired a lawyer for?” I received a copy of an e-mail, which I felt was worth sharing with our readers: To President Obama and all 535 voting members of the Legislature… a. The U.S. Postal Service was established in 1775. You have had 237 years to get it right and it is broke. b. Social Security was established in 1935. You have had 77 years to get it right and it is broke. c. Fannie Mae was established in 1938. You have had 74 years to get it right and it is broke. d. War on Poverty started in 1964. You have had 48 years to get it right; $1 trillion of our money is confiscated each year and transferred to “the poor” and they only want more. e. Medicare and Medicaid were established in 1965. You have had 47 years to get it right and they are broke. f. Freddie Mac was established in 1970. You have had 42 years to get it right and it is broke. g. The Department of Energy was created in 1977 to lessen our dependence on foreign oil. It has ballooned to 16,000 employees with a budget of $24 billion a year and we import more oil than ever before. You have had 35 years to get it right and it is an abysmal failure. You have FAILED in every “government service” you have attempted to oversee while increasing the cost every year. AND YOU WANT AMERICANS TO BELIEVE YOU CAN BE TRUSTED WITH A GOVERNMENTRUN HEALTH CARE SYSTEM? End of E-mail. I do not have the time or resources to accurately substantiate all contained in this e-mail. Yet! I have no reason to doubt either. My question is—What can big government be trusted with? Many of our seniors or retired friends have sold their homes and moved to other states to be free of the New York school tax. Our schools are basically controlled by a huge state Department of Education, and not by
Original Valley PENNYSAVER • August 4, 2012
Page 7
local school boards. I truly believe if a local school board with its local teaching staff, with input from the community, were allowed to operate the school property and teach subjects which they felt best suited their area, the education program would then be in the correct hands. With school and property tax so high, some cannot find a buyer for their property. One prospective buyer said with my wife and I both working we could get the mortgage paid within 15 to 20 years, but those strangling taxes go on forever. I believe the local school staff and school board members should be praised considering the state mandates wrapped around their necks. The following is a true story. Friends of ours, in planning their financial needs for retirement, sold their home in upstate New York which was smothered with taxes—school tax being the heaviest—uprooted their way of life and purchased a near-equal in value house in Virginia. Their total property tax is now in the $600 annual range (this includes 100% of all real property taxes) and not in the many thousands as their former New York State home. “And now, my friends,” said the campaigning U.S. Senator, “I wish to tax your memory.” “Good heavens,” muttered his colleague, “why didn’t we think of that before?” The famous lady comedian, Phyllis Diller, offered this advice to married couples. “Never go to bed mad. Stay up and fight.” “Mommy, I can’t marry him!” the bride-to-be cried to her mother. “He’s an atheist and doesn’t even believe in hell.” “Marry him,” her mother said, “and between the two of us, we’ll convince him.” A little blarney lightens the soul. Last Saturday at an auction, I bought a parrot for my wife, paying a substantially higher price than I could have bid. After the auction I asked Tim if the parrot could actually talk. He said, “Who do you think was bidding against you and ran the price so high?” J.R. merely said he would talk, not what he could say. I ordered a beautiful diamond ring for my wife from a so-called old-time respectable mail-order jeweler and paid for it in advance. When it arrived by U.S. mail the package was stamped with “Handle With Care—Glass Contents.” Prior to marriage I insisted on a short courtship. I realized it would not be smart to give my future bride too much time to look around and compare. Before our marriage, my wife’s sister said, “Honey, I just don’t know. He is a publisher and may be a little bit cracked.” I know my future wife replied, “I understand, but he’s not broke.” From this, I feel confident you will agree with, “The Good Lord must enjoy humor. Why else would he have created the Irish?” You know the old saying, “Practice makes perfect.” If you search the scriptures, you might find in written proof that our creator practiced with the Garden of Eden and then the wee island of Ireland. Remembering all he had learned, he then built upstate New York. The Holy Bible says that God created man in his own image, which to me is proof that he knew he would be proud and would love us. Accepting this, why do so many show such disrespect towards him? Face it, he did not have to give them life but he did and is willing to forgive. Life in his created world is a finer, happier place to be when we accept him and live by his rules. I hope some pastor will see you in church soon. If you do, someday your children will speak proudly of their Mom and Dad. Fred Lee and the Lee Family

Going home for a visit by Skip Barshied
The title could bring nostalgic memories, however in this case it is not about taking a short trip to see Grandma and Grandpa. Around about us is a beautiful valley - the Mohawk Valley. Do many of today’s residents ever consider how the valley got its name? Do you ever wonder if today’s Mohawk people live within driving distance of their ancient Homeland? We know that in recent years some native people have established themselves within our area and they teach about their traditions and culture and the area is better for those teachings. However, there are those who still come to visit a land that once was their people’s ancient homeland. Every year it has become the habit for three members of the Six Nations to make a pilgrimage to the Mohawk Valley. They come quietly and peacefully to visit not only their ancient valley but present day friends. Early in June one of these pilgrimages took place. Two twin brothers, Don and Ron Monture and a cousin, John Anderson, made the trip from the Six Nation Reserve across the border from Niagra Falls.

This clay vessel, crafted by Ron Monture, is designed to replicate North-Eastern Woodland cultures of the 1300-1600 AD era. Monture’s Native American pottery is typically fashioned after the Iroquois, Huron and Susquehannock cultures.

Well, look no further than the newly established Skinner Service Station located just west of Little Falls at 5637 St. Rt. 5, in East Herkimer. Roger Skinner is a name well known throughout the Mohawk Valley for expertise in automotive knowledge and good relationships with customers. Now, in this new location, the business’ motto is to provide customers with a renewed confidence in the oldfashioned values and service they offer. “We have a ‘50’s attitude and offer old time service,” Skinner says, adding that the business is looking for an old time hose with a service bell to install at the facility. Modern features such as four up-to-date service bays and a spacious waiting area complete with a large flat screen television and a variety of recent publications, ensures speedy service — and a comfortable wait. “We are also catering to towed customers,” Skinner remarks. “We are offering a 24hour towing service and we are

Whatchamacallits These two items have similar shapes, but their purposes are about as different as two things can possibly be. The first is used to help nourish the body and the second is designed to separate body from soul. Both items are from Willis “Skip” Barshied Jr.’s collection of antiques. The item on the left is a maple sap spike used to tap maple trees so the sap could be collected and boiled down into syrup. It is one of many different designs that have been used over the years. The one on the right is a cartridge for a Civil War-era Burnside Carbine. The weapon was invented in 1856 by Ambrose Burnside. During the Civil War, 55,000 of the breech-loading carbines were purchased by the Union
Army, making it the third most widely used behind the Sharps and Spencer carbines. Although his carbine was a success at war, Burnside was not. He was a general in, and onetime commander of the Union Army of the Potomac
and is widely regarded as one of the most incompetent to serve during the Civil War. Burnside is remembered today, in a way, on a daily basis. His flamboyant style of facial hair gave us the term ‘sideburns.’

St. Johnsville Concert at Marina by Katie Ranno On July 30, concertgoers came down to the St. Johnsville Marina for the weekly Monday night Concert at the Marina Series to hear the Second Time Around Big Band. The concert was sponsored by the St. Johnsville Chamber of Commerce. As put by Chamber president Maragaret DiGiacomo, “Each week, a different non-profit holds a concert [at the marina].” The Chamber held a raffle and had their own refreshment stand, which included brownies, ice cream, and a topping of cubed oranges. All proceeds from the Chamber’s raffle and refreshment stand will be going to help with town projects and events. When asked why people come out to the concerts at the Marina, DiGiacomo
Pictured left to right: Chamber Member Juanita, Chamber Member Art Adams, and Chamber President Margaret DiGiacomo serve refreshements to Cindy, an out of town resident. Photos by Katie Ranno says, “They’re free.” She also went on to say that it’s also a time for people to
socialize and enjoy good entertainment. And indeed they did. The Second Time
Concert goers gather on the marina lawn to relax and enjoy the sounds of the Second Time Around Big Band.
Around Big Band gave the crowd a variety of vocal and instrumental big band classics, including “Fever,” “It’s the Talk of the Town,” and “It’s Only a Paper Moon.” They also took the time to share in conversation with the audience and give some history about big band music. Many came out to just enjoy the concert, but others came out to support some of the performers in the band that they knew. There are two more weeks left in the concert series. On Aug. 6, the Karg Brothers will perform. Aug. 13 will be the last concert in the series with a performance from Linda Lee and the Fox Creek Band. Concerts are held every Monday night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. down at the St. Johnsville Marina.

Canajoharie - Fort Plain Garden Club recognizes local gardeners by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Maybe you have noticed a strange flower appearing in your garden lately. Not the kind that grew there, but one that was “planted” there by a member of the Canajoharie-Fort Plain Garden Club, recognizing your efforts to beautify the community in which you live. According to Club President, Linda Klump, “We drive around and notice special gardens in the area and then we place these flowers in those gardens.” Klump and Club Secretary Marge DeBlock showed an example of the flowers the members have been distributing in
surrounding communities. “We cover an area of about a 30 mile radius, including St. Johnsville, Fort Plain, Canajoharie, Nelliston, and Palatine Bridge,” Klump said. The officers of the Club credit Program Director Carol Gould with coming up with the idea. “We buy the flowers and write our message on them, and place them in gardens to show our appreciation of other gardeners,” Gould said. “We want to acknowledge, recognize and encourage other gardeners,” remarked Reverend Plank. “It’s the Garden Club’s way of saying thank you!” Gould affirmed.
The Club has recently been recognized for their contribution to the World Gardening project. “For the past two years we have supported the project ‘Water for Sudan’,” reported Reverend Plank. “The money goes to help build wells in the villages in southern Sudan.” According to Klump, the Canajoharie-Fort Plain Garden Club has made the highest donation in their district for the project. The CanajoharieFort Plain Garden Club was established in 1934 and is a registered member of National Garden Clubs’ Federated Garden Clubs of NYS, Inc., Fifth District.
Twenty-two registered clubs make up district 5, with Agnes Rodd as Director. The CanajoharieFort Plain Club has about 25 active members. “We’re small, but we’re active!” Klump reported. They will be joining with the Kingsboro Garden Club, of Amsterdam, to sponsor the district’s ‘Second Standard Flower Show’ at the County Fair in Fonda, Aug. 27- Sept. 2. The Garden Club is always looking for new members. Interested? Contact Linda Klump at 518-993-9679 or Rev. Plank at 518-6735939. Online visit www.fgcnys.com/DistrictV.html.

Can pets feel love? Scientific evidence would have you believe that only human beings are capable of complex feelings that include love and hate. However, talk to any dog or cat owner and chances are they’ll say that they love their pets and receive equal love in return. Distinctive areas of the brain light up on MRIs when humans are shown someone they love. Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine saw the caudate area of the brain — which is involved in cravings — become very active when study participants were shown an image of their significant other. Another area that lit up was the ventral tegmental, which produces dopamine, a powerful neurotransmitter that affects pleasure and motivation. Whether the same occurs in pets is debatable. Although dogs and cats rely on their human owners to provide much of their necessities, from food to water to a safe place to live, their motivation toward affection does not seem linked to security alone. Cats have been known to travel hundreds of miles to find a prior owner who moved. Or if the cat has run off, he can generally find his way back. Dogs, similarly, have been shown to mourn the loss of a loved one after he or she has died, sitting outside of the room whimpering. Both dogs and cats have been documented as taking the proverbial bullet for their owners, attempting to save them when owners are injured or attacked. Cats have even been known to lick away tears. However, experts still debate whether or not pets can feel love. Researchers at Penn State have offered that dogs and cats probably don’t feel love in the same way that humans do. However, they’ve learned that by putting out cues that seem like love and affection to people, they stand to gain more — treats, food, pats on the back. Dogs and cats may “love" us based on the reward of their behaviors. If people no
longer supplied rewards, the love would wane. One could say that it’s ironic that Pavlov was able to train his dog to salivate as a conditioned reflex to a bell. For it seems people have been conditioned to reward dogs and cats
for the supposed “love” they are showing their owners. Still, others have said there may be some basis to the concept that pets feel deep emotions. Jane Goodall’s research into primates gives evidence that animals actually do
have emotions. “From a behavioral perspective, it only makes sense that animals would experience emotions,” she has noted. Goodall’s research suggests that social animals must be able to read other animals in their society and
must be able to maintain social bonds, much in the way pets form a social bond with their humans. The jury may continue to be out regarding whether puppy dog eyes or purring symbolizes love or our pet compan-
ions are just looking to secure their place in a comfortable environment. However, there is no harm done when pet owners lavish affection on their pets, especially if that companionship brings everyone involved joy.
