Labor Day: How it Came About; What it Means Labor Day, celebrated the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Founder of Labor Day More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers. Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold." But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic. The First Labor Day The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on Sept. 5, 1883. In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

Page 6 September 1, 2012 Hello Again,
For those of you who have a senior memory, and recall some of the sayings of the highly loved, celebrated humorist Will Rogers, what do you think he would say about his America today? He did not say the following: “Our country is like a horse — full of power and beauty with a sore foot which will not stand still long enough for the farrier (horse shoer) to fix it. To make matters worse, the farrier, riding horseback, is galloping hither and yon all over the country merely talking about the beautiful animal’s sore pleading foot saying, ‘Give me four more years and I can fix that poor horse,’ with the horse growing more crippled every day.” As I said, Will Rogers did not tell this horse story. However, I believe he would have had something to say in agreement. Today Will’s political wit would not be accepted by those who do not care about the present condition and future standing of this country. His political puns would create more tears than laughter. The truth often hurts. In God’s word, the Holy Bible found in Ephesians Chapter 4 — God gave special gifts to certain people — trusting them to lead or shepherd. In our constitution, with its by-laws based on the teachings of the Holy Bible, certain men were to be given special rights to lead and shepherd. Do you believe those biblical gifts were given so those men could turn the people away from God’s teaching or that the constitution meant to allow leaders to change our government away from every practice we believed in and have followed for over two hundred years? It appears our number one farrier and his liberal opinion creators, those with the untrustworthy daily newspapers, radio, and T.V. stations as their pulpits, are more interested in tossing horse apples or road muffins. Could they possibly believe if they surround themselves with a daily supply of horse apples, tossing them far, wide and often, no one will know where the odor is coming from and they will win by pointing their finger at the other guy — why not blame Bush? Can you hear it now? How about this for a short sing-a-long? “I do not have the time to tend to the sore foot NOW, can’t you see I’m very busy hopping all over the country, speech-a-fying about the problems the poor horse’s sore foot is causing? Give me four more years with a few thousand pages — prepared by I do not know who — and after it becomes law we will figure out what it says. If the horse is not totally crippled or dead by then we will borrow some more money from China which will surely fix it, we think.” I can almost hear the liberal chant if they win for the next four years and the economy heads further South, and it surely will. “Where is Bush — we need Bush. It was all his fault the horse died. BushBush-Bush, give us Bush!” Let’s face it, when something goes wrong and you can’t fix it—you have to find someone to blame.

My wife is an excellent shopper, taking advantage of discounted prices — coupons, two for ones, shelf specials, today onlys — you name it. During her last trip to the grocery store she brought home what appeared to be an extra large loaf of Italian bread. Certainly gave her the appearance of a giant buy. Not to hurt her feelings — I won’t mention to her — what I’m going to share with you. I’m a bologna (should be spelled baloney) sandwich man. Before sitting at the kitchen table to write this part of Hello Again, I slipped a couple of slices out of the middle of the loaf of Italian bread — the middle slices are larger. With my trusty bread and butter knife, poked it deep into a jar of mayo and attempted to spread it on a slice of that extra large, gigantic loaf of air holes, lovingly called Italian bread. It must take a genius baker to wrap so little baked flour around all of those holes. Holes here — holes there — holes everywhere, including the big one I mayonnaised my left hand with. I learned the secret. Put the baloney on the bread and spread the mayo on the baloney. It may have been a great diet sandwich. Two slices of thin cut baloney, a portion of Hellman’s in between two layers of holes. The bread came wrapped in a clear cellophane wrapper with no words, which makes sense. How could they talk about nothing? Only a politician can do that. Oops, my wife read this chatter about the bread and said it merely gave me a chance to blarney-a-fy. She said it is really great as toast. Can you imagine, my wife likes toasted bread holes? Try one — if you enjoy baloney and mayo — you will certainly like it. There is nothing else to dislike. I wonder if our Chinese friends have mastered the art of eating a dish of holes using chopsticks. With fall and then winter coming along, I wonder why men’s cold weather underwear is called Long John’s and why summer wear is not called Short John’s. Maybe I should find something more important to think about. Wave when you see the red three-wheeler rumble by. Be extra careful and courteous when passing a horse and buggy. Remember the horse is a horse and is without hydraulic brakes. If God did not create mankind and the Earth, who or what did? Nothing does not create something. If Darwin thought his relatives hung by their tails from trees, it’s okay with me. He certainly knew more about his family than I do. Today is the youngest day of our lives. Take time to thank the good Lord. Say hi to your neighbor. Sure hope to see you in church this Sunday.

August 29, 2012 Speaker Silver’s pick for the 111th — Mr. Santabarbara Dear Editor: Two years ago, I watched an interesting race shape up in the 105th A.D. between Assemblyman George Amedore and his Democratic challenger Angelo Santabarbara. In this race, I couldn’t help but notice a connection between Mr. Santabarbara and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, a powerful and influential New York City Democrat who controls much of New York state policy and holds the majority of seats in the Assembly. At that time I realized it would be a scary thought if we

had a representative who was an ally of Mr. Silver and would vote with and support the Speaker and his New York City policies 90 to 99 percent of the time, but who would also accept support in the form of campaign contributions, from a person who is antiUpstate. This is why I voted for Mr. Amedore, the person who would truly represent Upstate taxpayers and businesses. Fast forward to today — Mr. Amedore has endorsed Republican Tom Quackenbush, a former Assessor, Mayor, twice Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, and a current Town Supervisor with over 15 years of budget and managerial expe-
rience. Mr. Quackenbush’s conservative and business-friendly outlook has dramatically improved our Upstate community. Mr. Santabarbara is of the party that is anti-business and enjoys the tax-andspend policies that Mr. Silver is all too fond of. As a majority legislator for Schenectady County, Santabarbara has done little to assist overburdened taxpayers and businesses in the district. Mr. Santabarbara would love a chance to represent and ally himself with the man that has been the poster child for dysfunction and corruption in Albany, who is solely interested in maintaining power and
influence over policy in this state, and is destined to once again give Mr. Santabarbara tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from New York City — Mr. Silver. A word to the wise this November — vote for the candidate who: wants to stop the corruption and scandal; has a campaign truly for the people and by the people; is the true fiscal conservative with the experience and leadership necessary to do the job; and is the only voice for Upstate New York. Hire the best: Tom Quackenbush for State Assembly. Sincerely, Eric Hess Rotterdam, NY

2012 New York apple crop forecast reflects smaller U.S. crop FISHERS, NY — New York apple fans are being urged to shop early and enjoy their favorite varieties while they last, as state supplies will be down this fall. And according to a newlyreleased national crop forecast, New York isn’t alone. A U.S. Department of Agriculture crop forecast released Aug. 10 places the New York state crop at 14.0 million boxes, down 54 percent compared to the state’s five-year average production of 30.7 million boxes. Meanwhile, the U.S. crop forecast of 192.0 million boxes is down 15 percent from the five-year national average production of 224.5 million boxes. Spring frost or summer hail — and sometimes both — impacted nearly every U.S. growing region. What does that mean for New York apple fans? There is plenty of good news, too. Harvest began three weeks earlier than usual due to this year’s early spring, so new-crop apples are hitting stores and markets now. Favorite New York varieties will be available, and good early summer weather worked in the crop’s favor. New York growers report good fruit size, and apples should be sweeter because of the summer sun and dry weather. “The 2012 apple season is now officially underway, we are open for business,” said NYAA President
Families enjoy picking their own Apple Country® apples in the fall. Photos courtesy of New York Apple Association Jim Allen. ”Support your New York apple growers, and enjoy our apples while they last.” The federal forecast for New York was comparable to a forecast made by New York industry leaders during a conference call late last month. Because the national crop is smaller, apple prices at retail are expected to be higher across the country. “This year puts a spotlight on the kinds of pressures that our growers have to deal with with year in, year out,” said Allen. “They deserve our respect and support, don’t Kids really love picking their own Apple Country® apples in the fall. you think?”

Local New York apple TV commercial wins national Telly Award
FISHERS, NY — A local New York television commercial has been awarded a national Telly Award for outstanding creative work. New York Apple Association (NYAA) received the 2012 Telly for its “All About Apples” advertisement. “All About Apples” was written and directed for NYAA by Mason Selkowitz Marketing and produced by Crystal Pix, Inc., both based in Rochester. “All About Apples” was recorded at a Rochester studio, using local actors – including some very adorable child performers. Set to upbeat music, the commercial features mouth-
watering images of New York apples as well as pies, sauce, cider and other foods made from them. “We devote a large portion of our promotional budget to connect with consumers, and short of being able to put an apple in every consumer’s hand the powerful visuals of video are the best way to make that connection,” said NYAA President Jim Allen. “We also reached consumers where they want to be reached, online on YouTube and on websites.” “All About Apples” and other NYAA videos can be viewed on the association’s YouTube channel.
This is the fourth award to go to NYAA for its video work; the association also received the Telly in 2007 for “Apples Apples”, the 2007 Gold Aurora Award for “Apple”, the 2008 “Platinum Best of Show” Aurora Award for “Cider Magic”, and the 2004 Telly award for “Diner”. The national Telly Awards, founded in 1978, honor “the best film and video productions, groundbreaking online video content, and outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs”, reports the Telly website. Entries are judged by the Silver Telly Council, which includes award-
winning members of the visual arts community. About New York Apple Association A nonprofit agricultural trade association based in Fishers, NY, NYAA represents the state’s commercial apple growers. The association supports profitable growing and marketing of New York apples through increasing demand for apples and apple products, representing the industry at state and federal levels, and serving as the primary information source on New York apple-related matters. For more information, visit www.nyapplecountry.com.

FIS distributes millions to its employees ORISKANY, NY — Frank Giotto, president of Fiber Instrument Sales, Inc., in Oriskany, NY, has announced a distribution of $8.1 million to employees who’ve participated in the company’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan. According to Giotto, over the past 10 years some 167 current and past employees have participated in the Employee Retirement Income Security Act-qualified plan that provided
participants with the opportunity to receive shares of company stock, without making a personal contribution. FIS is now purchasing those shares from the ESOP Trust, resulting in the direct distribution of the funds to either employees’ individual qualified retirement plans or as a direct cash distribution, whatever the participant chooses. Some 84 percent of the $8.1 million will be distributed to current FIS employ-
ees, the remainder to past employees. “The response from FIS employees is that this is a lifechanging event,” said Giotto. “While most of the participants are planning to roll over these funds, many have talked about paying off large debts, investing in their homes, making large purchases they’ve put off for many years, or establishing a college fund for their children. “I am pleased that the continued suc-
cesses of FIS can be shared with our family of employees and I trust that many lives will be profoundly impacted by this monumental event.” Fiber Instrument Sales, Inc., with headquarters in the Research Park in Oriskany, NY, is a leading manufacturer and distributor of fiber optic cable, tools, test equipment and supplies, doing business in 110 countries and employing some 350 individuals in the Mohawk Valley.

Dollars and Sense by David Uffington How to cut mortgage interest payments The average interest rate for home mortgages recently fell to a 30-year record low. According to Freddie Mac, the rate for a 30-year loan went to 3.66 percent from a previous 3.71 percent. Many potential homebuyers look at that drop in the interest rate and consider it significant. But look at the figures: A $100,000 loan at 3.71 percent will cost you $460.85 per month in payments. A $100,000 loan at 3.66 percent will cost you $458.02 per month in payments. That’s a savings of only $2 per month ... unless you calculate the savings over the life of the loan. At 3.71 percent, that $100,000 loan will cost you $65,905 in interest alone, which means you’ll pay $165,905 over the 30-year course of the loan. At 3.66 percent that $100,000 loan will cost you $64,888 in interest alone, and you’ll pay $164,888 over the 30 years.

That’s a savings of just $1,017 spread out over 30 years. There’s a much better way to cut the amount the interest you pay. What if you send the mortgage company $25 extra per month? Your interest, at the 3.71 rate, drops to $59,207 and you cut a year and a half off your mortgage. Let’s increase that to $100 extra per month. Your interest, at the 3.71 rate, will drop to $45,583 and you’ll shave approximately eight years off the life of your 30year note. If the idea of paying off your mortgage early appeals to you, let’s increase that extra amount per month to $200 and look at the figures. The interest over the life of the loan drops to $35,042, and you pay off the loan 12 years early. That, not in the tiny drops in interest rate, is where you’ll see your greatest savings. If you’re ready to buy, don’t quibble about small changes in the interest rate. Do your homework: Get your credit in good shape, assemble your documents (such as tax returns and bank statements) and when it comes to buying, spend less than you’ve been approved for. Send those extra dollars in with your payment each month and watch your balance drop. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Saint Johnsville Fireman’s Fair
by Katie Ranno From Aug. 20 to Aug. 25, the Saint Johnsville Fire Department brought their annual Fireman’s Fair to the town of Saint Johnsville. Various visitors came to the fair to enjoy classic rides, like the Tilt-aWhirl and the Scrambler, and
classic fair foods, such as caramel corn, cotton candy, and fried dough with powdered sugar. People of all ages came out to enjoy the fair for various reasons. Greenville Center resident Heidi Tosh experienced her first time at the fair to enjoy time with her family. Natasha

Stone Arabia Preservation Society’s 19th annual Vehicle Show and Craft Fair ~ better than ever!
by Elizabeth A. Tomlin It was an excellent turnout for the Stone Arabia Preservation Society’s 19th annual Vehicle Show and Craft Fair. According to the Society’s President Carol Edwards, “We did very well! It was one of our top years!” Edwards reported that over 140 vehicles registered for the event and even more showed up to be on display at the show. There were also more vendors than last year- with more variety. The annual event took place on Sunday, Aug. 27, at the Stone Church in Stone Arabia,
where sunny skies and summer breezes made the day perfect for viewing the large assortment of vehicles, some new, but mostly older model classics. The event has become very popular with exhibitors who come from all over upstate New York to participate in the show and enjoy the food, music, games and fellowship. The show was originally organized in 1990 by local judge and attorney, Doris Crangle. “She spark plugged it,” remarked Society Secretary Janet Ouderkirk. “It was for the sole purpose of preserving and maintaining the beauty
and history of the church and parsonage.” Tours of the historical 1788 Stone Church and parsonage were an additional treat for history buffs. Local businesses had donated many items and certificates for the raffles and Chinese Auction. “Our area businesses are very supportive of this,” recognized Ouderkirk. Edwards said she is very appreciative of all of the volunteers, members of the society and the car owners who attended the 19th annual show. “We wouldn’t have a show without them!” she acknowledged. Members of Stone Arabia Preservation Society number about 100. “Some are out of state and have ties to this area,” Edwards commented. For info on the Society or Stone Arabia Stone Church contact Carol Edwards at 518993-4280 or Earl Fredericks, Sr. at 518-993-4105. “Thank you to everyone who supports the church, it is a treasure in this area!” observed Edwards.

This is a Hammer by Samantha Mazzotta Get free HDTV with outdoor antenna Q: I recently canceled my cable subscription in order to save money. While watching the news streamed on my computer is okay, I’d like to pick up local stations on my TV. How can I do that? — Chuck F., New Hampshire A: Today’s over-theair TV transmissions are entirely digital, a change mandated by the government a couple of years back. The old “analog” TV transmissions were switched off in 2010, something that owners of old tube televisions who try to pick up signals with their old antennae are painfully aware of.
However, even with an older television, you can pick up lineof-sight transmissions and receive local television stations. Converter boxes are available at most large retailers that sell electronics and cost from $30 to $60. You can learn more at http:// dtv.gov/ consumercorner_4.html. If you have a newer HD television, you might be able to pick up a few signals if the TV has a built-in digital antenna. If not, there are several HD antennas on the market. If you live in an area where TV signals are traditionally faint, you’ll absolutely need one of these. They start at around $45 and go up in price, but the plus side is that
you won’t pay any more money for TV signals once the antenna is up. At least one brand of HD antenna was designed to be set up inside your home, but there are other brands specifically made to be set up outside or on the roof. Outdoor antennas can pick up signals up to 50 miles away in most cases, as long as there aren’t too many obstructions like hills or other buildings between your home and the transmission source. To set up an outdoor HD antenna, follow the instructions included with the product. Those made for rooftops should include proper mounting bolts and, ideally, small sealing squares
(basically roof-patching squares) that sit between the antenna mount base and the roof. If those sealing squares aren’t included, head to your home-improvement store for roof patches and cut them to fit. You’ll also need to feed the coaxial cable connecting the antenna back into the house to your television. If possible, try using the holes already drilled by the cable company to install its coax, rather than punch more holes in your home’s envelope. A number of videos on the web can provide more information on antenna installation. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Used-car buyers need to check for recalls
(NAPSA) — Every year, vehicle manufacturers issue millions of recalls to help maintain safety and value. But did you know that one in three recalled cars never get fixed? For various reasons, many car owners fail to act on recall notices — even though manufacturers will fix these vehicles at no cost. While some recalls are issued to correct minor flaws in original equipment, you don’t want to buy a vehicle that has costly hidden problems, either. If you’re shopping used cars, there’s an easy way to help improve your chances of buying one without open recalls. Go to recall.carfax.com to check vehicles for
open recalls at no cost. Then, you can feel more confident about the used car you’re buying. You can also get more
information about a specific recall at safercar.gov. Knowing about an open recall could help you avoid buying a
used car with problems. Plus, fixing recalls helps maintain vehicle value and safety. To learn more, visit recall.carfax.com.
Increasingly, used-car buyers are checking to see if a recall has been announced for a car they want to buy.

Family Fundamentals: Resources can help measure financial fitness Q: We have little debt, but we also have trouble putting money into savings on a regular basis. I feel pretty comfortable with our family finances, but how can I tell if we’re really doing okay? A: Determining fiscal fitness isn’t always easy. But you don’t want to wait until you get hit with an un-
expected expense or sudden loss of income to find out how fragile your finances really are. Recently, a study of 2,100 adults by the National Bureau of Economic Research revealed that half of those surveyed would likely not be able to come up with $2,000 if an unexpected need arose in
the next month. That means they’d be stuck if they encountered a major medical expense or car or home repair. For those who make between $100,000 and $150,000 a year, nearly one in four said they “certainly” or “probably” would not be able to come up with the money. Having an adequate emergency fund is not the only measure of financial stability. America Saves, a national campaign to encourage people to reduce debt and build savings, recently listed “Five Signs You Are In Financial Trouble” (http://bit.ly/finantrouble), asking: • Do you use your credit card for basic needs like rent, insurance and food?
Join for 2013 Membership and
• Can you only afford to make minimum payments on your credit cards? • Do you worry about finding the money to make monthly car payments? • Do you borrow money to pay off old debts? • Have you used a home equity loan to refinance credit card debts, then run up new revolving balances on your cards? There are plenty of other red flags that you may be financially unstable. Barbara O’Neill, a certified financial planner and family finance specialist with Rutgers Cooperative Extension, lists 34 warning signs in “Danger Signals of Excessive Debt,” at http://bit.ly/debtsignals. You could be in trouble if you see yourself in five or more of the indicators, such as being chronically late on household bills, being dishonest with your spouse or partner on use of credit cards, or being unsure how much debt you’ve accumulated (and afraid to add it up). O’Neill and others at Rutgers have also developed an online Financial Fitness Quiz that you can take to measure your current financial practices.
Just go to http://njaes.rutgers.edu/ money/ffquiz/ and answer 20 questions about financial management, saving and investing, insurance and estate planning, use of credit, and shopping and spending. The survey, which is part of a research study, also asks for some basic demographic information. When you’re done, you re-
ceive a financial fitness score and suggestions for improvement based on your responses. For even more guidance, see the Personal Finance page under the “Family” menu at www.extension.org. It offers a wealth of information from Extension experts from land-grant universities across the nation.

Dollars and sense by David Uffington Long, cold nights not short on fun The days are getting shorter, and that means one thing: Cold weather is coming. Before winter sets in, plan what you and your family will do for entertainment when the nights are long and you're stuck indoors. The key is to not spend much money. • Board games and cards: check charity shops for games in good condition. Open the boxes and count the pieces to be sure nothing is missing. Look for jigsaw puzzles that have a note attached saying all the pieces are there. Avoid games that take batteries. Borrow a card-game book from the library, or see Pagat.com for international games. • Take your children to the library after school one day a week to check out books. • Have an Art Night. Before all the school supplies are gone from stores, stock up on crayons, paints and markers at low prices. Add stacks of construction paper and
glue for the younger ones. Check craft and fabric stores for modeling clay that can be baked in the oven, and create holiday ornaments or pottery gifts. Make wallets from duct tape. Create holiday cards out of last year's cards and construction paper. • Make one night a week Kids Cooking Night. Look online or at the library for easy recipes. Have them plan in advance what they'll fix, and be sure the ingredients are on hand. Bake bread together and freeze the extra. • Learn a new language: DVDs and tapes from the library (or found at a thrift store) can make learning fun if you all do it together for 15 minutes a night. Or check online at Live Mocha [livemocha.com] for free basic instruction in any of its 38 languages. • Start a post card, stamp or coin collection. • Have a camp-in on the living-room floor, complete with hot dogs, S'mores and ghost stories by flashlight. • Make puppets from fabric you have on hand and give plays, learn to dance, do magic tricks or fold origami. (All of these and more can be found on YouTube.com videos.) • Write poetry and short stories. • Set up a home photo studio, take pictures of the family and print out the best ones for gifts. The idea is to stay busy — and not spend much money — when cold weather keeps you indoors. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

by Kathy Jablonski, Field Specialist, Youth and Family, UNH Cooperative Extension School is starting and it will be time for the breakfast battles again. Did you know 60 percent of teenagers regularly skip breakfast, which can affect learning and food intake for the rest of the day? Researchers at the University of Missouri studied a group of breakfastskipping teenagers for three weeks. Some teens continued to skip breakfast while the other two groups ate breakfast meals containing 500 calories. One group consumed a higher amount of protein than the other. Making use of surveys and brain scans, the researchers studied how breakfast helps manage appetite and food intake. According to their results, either of the protein-containing breakfast meals was effective in reducing hunger throughout the morning, but the meal with more protein (yogurt and waffles) left the students less hungry throughout the day. The brain scans showed that breakfast intake led to activation of the areas of the brain associated with appetite management. Other research from the University of Florida Cooperative Extension shows scholastic consequences for youth who skip the most important meal of the day. Children
who did not eat breakfast made more errors on matching familiar figures. Reading and math skills also suffered in breakfast-skippers. On days without breakfast, children have a decreased ability to solve continuous task problems. All of this points to the importance of eating breakfast. Help your teens, and younger age students, get a great start to their day. Fuel your body and brain with nourishing food in the morning. Plan ahead so your family can have some grab and go breakfasts that will fuel their day. Plan a time after supper or before bed where family members decide on their chosen breakfast option for the next day. Purchase non-fat yogurt and non-fat or low fat cottage cheese in large family size quantities. Separate into individual servings for ready to eat convenience. Prepare homemade waffles or pancakes, freeze and then they can
be toasted for the morning rush. Have ample fruit in season, or small containers of fruit packed in its own juice for healthy additions to your morning routine. Keep wraps on hand for easy to roll breakfast burritos made by scrambling an egg in the microwave. Add veggies as desired. Kids are breakfast eaters? Any food can be breakfast food. Try making a quiche or other breakfast squares the night before and have it ready as a grab and go meal. Don’t forget tortillas and melted cheese for a quick high protein breakfast on the run. Does your child’s school have a breakfast program? Consider signing them up. It may help ease all kinds of stress in the family’s morning. Information based on a Prairie Fare article prepared by Julie GardenRobinson, Ph.D., R.D., L.R.D., a North Dakota State University Extension Service and research from the University of Florida’s Solution for Life website.

ORISKANY, NY — Frank Giotto, president of Fiber Instrument Sales, Inc., in Oriskany, NY, has announced a distribution of $8.1 million to employees who’ve participated in the company’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan. According to Giotto, over the past 10 years some 167 current and past employees have participated in the Employee Retirement Income Security Act-qualified plan that provided participants with the opportunity to receive shares of company stock, without making a personal contribution. FIS is now purchasing those shares from the ESOP Trust, resulting in the direct distribution of the funds to either employees’ individual qualified retirement plans or as a direct cash distribution, whatever the participant chooses. Some 84 percent of the $8.1 million will be distributed to current FIS employees, the remainder to past employees. “The response from FIS employees is that this is a life-changing event,” said Giotto. “While most of the participants are planning to roll over these funds, many have talked about paying off large debts, investing in their homes, making large purchases they’ve put off for many years, or establishing a college fund for their children. “I am pleased that the continued successes of FIS can be shared with our family of employees and I trust that many lives will be profoundly impacted by this monumental event.” Fiber Instrument Sales, Inc., with headquarters in the Research Park in Oriskany, NY, is a leading manufacturer and distributor of fiber optic cable, tools, test equipment and supplies, doing business in 110 countries and employing some 350 individuals in the Mohawk Valley.
