Page 6 September 8, 2012 Hello Again,

It’s about 6:25 Wednesday morning. I am looking out of the front window of our motor home next to the river at the St. Johnsville Marina-Campground. Sometimes the Mohawk River seems to be standing still. This morning it is heading east in a hurry. I wonder where this morning’s river water will be tonight. We know it will flow from here to the Hudson River and then south to New York City and on into the Atlantic Ocean. Maybe someday it will return to upstate New York as rain and repeat its trip east and then south, never failing to do its job. Some believe that all of this natural activity and beauty just happened all by itself, while others believe in the story—or truth—which is revealed in the book of Genesis in the bible. A book which also did not just happen. I believe God created the Mohawk River with its feeder streams, surrounded by our beautiful hills which guides the great Mohawk and streams as they wander along their way. I also choose to believe God inspired men to write his message in the book of Genesis along with his life-giving messages throughout the other books in the bible. At the point of sounding like a know-it-all, I take certain satisfaction in knowing no one can prove me wrong. Further on in the bible it says, “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” I do fear and can see his handy work all around. Beauty in such depth had to be created—it did not just happen. I also believe mankind was his greatest accomplishment. His word—the Bible— says we were created in God’s-image. This morning I had to face a rather difficult decision. Earlier, since writing the last “Hello again,” I prepared a rather lengthy chatter about different or separate governments and their core philosophy failing due to the lack of long range workability. Our beautiful country seems to be in the hands of two major political parties with definite opposing philosophies. The Republican Party seems to favor, while admitting our economy demands something stronger than T.L.C., advancing a plan for a smaller, less-controlled government coupled with capitalism. While the Democratic Party appears to be in favor of a great change which is basically to drastically alter our tested economic system—tear it apart and accept socialism as our new change pathway. Socialism is a theory that a large central government is more capable to rule than the old-fashioned, time-tested American way. Money in the hands of individuals and capitalized companies, and not under or in the hands of a huge centralized federal government. While not changing my mind concerning the content, I decided to postpone publishing until both political conventions have passed. I wish more Americans would truly study the issues, voice and vote according to their own personal feeling. In keeping with the old saying, this is the youngest week of our lives. A beautiful week to enjoy, to find new challenges or to sink or swim. So what’s special about this time of year? Television would convince us that the most important events are the Republican Party National Convention and the Democratic National Convention. However, to millions of students, teachers, bus drivers, Mom and Pops, etc., the real big event is the new school year starting. I wonder, for Moms, which is the most wonderful—in the spring when school lets

Original Valley PENNYSAVER • September 8, 2012

Page 7

out or in the fall when those darling children climb on the bus and go back to school for a few hours? I wouldn’t dare to ask Moms for their answer. Memories are made of this. Our little two room schoolhouse with its big wood-burning chunk stove, with built-in air conditioning (teachers could open or close windows and doors or stoke up the wood fire), the two chemical outdoor type toilets with no running water, woodshed full of wood to burn for heat. No such animal as a real school bus. Passenger cars were drafted and we walked. Can you imagine in this day and age—6th grade boys being required to chop wood and feed it into a big chunk stove? How about carrying two pails of water from the next-door neighbor’s spring up the hill to the school for drinking water? As well educated as our children are today, remember our generation was the first to know the name of the-man-on-the-moon: Neil Armstrong. However, during those memory-creating years and now, we enjoyed one common gift: our teachers. Trained, educated men and women who shared their knowledge with their students, smiled when a student excelled and went home pulling their hair when others would not even try. W.C. Fields, the world famous comedian, said, “There’s not a man in America who at one time or another hasn’t had a secret desire to boot a child in the rear.” I can add for most Moms that’s only half true. If they could, they would energize both boots. That urge must grow stronger every day just before school starts. Now for my own change— From Hello Again to Thanks Again. Your comments concerning these pages and your visits to our advertisers are truly appreciated. To repeat what so many have said to me, “Keep up the good work.” I ask you to “Keep up your support, and thanks again.” For many, Sunday is a very busy day. Church may not fit into your weekly schedule. However a few seconds or minutes talking with the Lord will brighten your day and help lift the load. May God be with you, your family, and your friends. When you see the little red bike—smile and wave hello. Fred Lee and the Lee Family SPECIAL LATE BREAKING NEWS: Dan West, pastor of the Grandview Baptist Church with the church family, friends, and a special guest will be celebrating Founder’s Day this Sunday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m. Both founding pastors, Rev. Carl Hawver and Les St. John will return for a special hour of music and preaching. Music promises to be truly heartwarming with Connie and Les St. John singing. The St. John’s are proven favorite vocalists and Carl Hawver with his tenor saxophone will offer special Christian music. Pastor West says, “Come and be blessed.” Grandview is located on the corner of Lydius and Washington Streets in Fort Plain, NY.
