Page 6 September 22, 2012 Hello Again,
Life seems to keep on drifting by. Minutes become hours—hours into weeks. With no effort or control on our part—on into years. About one half of my lifetime ago—one lady and three men—each associated with Lee Publications, held a meeting in the Pennysaver office. More than memory can bring into focus it may have not been the first time we gathered to talk about starting a new regional weekly farm newspaper, but it was the most important. This is what happened that day: we committed ourselves to publish a new weekly farm newspaper. The first issue would be published on November 12, 1974. That was about 38 years ago. After several hours of discussion, its name would be—Country Folks. A true farm weekly. A dream had been turned into action. Janice Handy would be the editor. Dick St. John, publications director. Jack Hayden would manage printing and Fred Lee, the first advertising salesperson. A special front-page message said: Hello--It’s obvious that this is our first issue. What’s not so obvious is our sincere desire to do the best we can for you — our readers. We promise honest effort, flexibility to your desires and real caring. This song by T. Hall expresses our thoughts… Country is — Sittin’ on the back porch listening to the whippoorwill, late in the day. Country is — Minding your business helpin’ a stranger, if he comes your way. Country is — Living in the city knowing your people, knowing your kind. Country is — What you make it. Country is — all in your mind. Country is — Workin’ for a living thinkin’ your own thoughts — loving your town. Country is — Teachin’ your children, find out what’s right, and stayin’ your ground. Country is — Walkin’ in the moonlight. Country is — all in your heart. Little did we dream that Country Folks would grow into one of the largest weekly farm publications serving the farm and agriculture related industries in the Eastern United States. Most of the people who will read this brief bio of Country Folks are not farmers. So why all of this chatter? It is to make a point. Country Folks was a dream or plan that was originated right here in the Palatine Corridor, not in some large or famous village or city. And for 38 years it has proven to be a standard in its industry—never missed an issue or a payroll in all of those years. Nearly 2,000 issues and still growing. The Mohawk Valley is a good place — a great place to start a business. Out of little acorns, grow large oak trees. Business is like the little acorn — first a seed must be planted. First a business must be started. It is never too late to start living a happy and successful life, but the sooner we begin, the greater the results. God has provided everything we need to live the good life. We are exposed to exciting new opportunities each day, to capitalize on them, we — or you, must grasp an opportunity and take advantage. Could it be the Good Lord is sending us a message? This apple with the heart message was grown right here in our valley at Bellinger’s Orchard in Fultonville.

Chelsea Dimond of Canajoharie was sure Pennysaver reader’s would enjoy this picture of an apple with the perfect shaped heart. Thanks Chelsea, maybe the seeds should be planted.
Published in the Grit newspaper — June 23, 1974 Ideas Grow On You. A village in northern Romania plants a cherry tree at the birth of every village child. The village, Ciersoaia, which has kept this custom hundreds of years, is now surrounded by 65,000 cherry trees. When a man is born people ask, “How is the mother?” When he marries they exclaim, “What a lovely bride!” and when he dies they inquire, “How much did he leave her?” An early Mohawk Valley lady asked an old Indian, “How did this beautiful valley come about?” He answered, “It was cut by a huge glacier.” “Where is the glacier now?” she asked. He replied, “It went back looking for another valley.” What do you think of this for an idea? At every house, in or near the Mohawk Valley, we plant lilac bushes visible from the street or road. Some day we could have a Lilac Festival. Can you imagine how beautiful it would be? I rode the red Spyder roadster down to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown on Wednesday morning. The air was a little nippy but still comfortable. As time marches on, so do the seasons. Many of our Country Folks believe fall is our most beautiful time of the year, while others prefer springtime with everything coming back to life. How fortunate we are with the changing seasons and for Bassett Hospital. The great Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown grew from a small country hospital, sponsored by the Clark Family. Today it is a nationally known and highly appreciated health care center with clinics in several surrounding communities. I have been told Bassett Hospital is now the largest employer in Otsego County. Soon we will be raking leaves, then shoveling snow. That is the part of the time clock we live with. Country Folks farm newspaper may be considered one of our community’s greatest accomplishments, however without its faithful readers our efforts would be fruitless. And you readers of the Original Valley and Family Pennysavers are the reason these weekly publications exist. Thank you. Next time you drive by a church, take a peek upward, and say Thank You Lord. He has his eye and hand on you. Your neighbors are your closest friends, take time to say hello and offer a prayer for them. Fred Lee and the Lee Family

Grandview Baptist Church Corner of Lydius & Washington St. Fort Plain, NY In March of 1985 these two pastors; Rev. Carl Hawver and Rev. Leslie St. John; got together and started Grandview Baptist Church. From a modest beginning in a rented building the church grew and about two years later purchased its own church building at 15 Washington St. in Fort Plain. Over the years the Church’s pastors have upheld the Holy Scriptures and continues today as a gospel preaching, Bible believing, independent Baptist Church. On September 9th the church celebrated Founders The two founding Pastors Les St. John and Carl Day with Les St. John and Hawver, with current Pastor Dan West, center. his wife Connie singing special music and Carl Hawver playing his saxophone. The preaching reminded members and visiting former members of the church’s heritage and the Lord’s faithfulness through the years.
No Baptist Gathering would be complete without a Church Familt Dinner. Left to Right Rev. Les St. John and Rev. Carl Hawver
The current pastor, Dan West, was encouraged by the founders that God is still working in and through the Church and has a bright future for his people. You are invited to attend and hear the bible preached and explained in an easy to understand way.

Jim’s Irish Harbor 2012 “Toy Run” benefits Schoharie Valley children by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Two full pickup trucks loaded with toys and gift certificates were delivered to the United Methodist Church in Prattsville, NY, on Sunday, Sept. 16 by Jim Blair and his mother Mary. The toys and gift certificates were all collected through Jim’s 4th annual Toy Run. So, just who is Jim Blair? Jim Blair is the gruff and tough proprietor of Jim’s Irish Harbor in Canajoharie, NY. Well, maybe not so gruff and tough as he seems. This is the second year toys and gift certificates collected through the Toy Run were donated to the children of Prattsville, NY, where the 2011 flood waters from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee devastated the community — virtually wiping out the entire town. “There are still whole families here without homes who lost everything in the flood,” reported Ken Cox of Prattsville, NY. “All of these toys are sure going to come in handy at Christmas.” The 119-mile round-trip benefit ride required each rider to bring one new toy or gift certificate to be donated to the children. Cox said that he knows there was a lot of work involved in organizing the Toy Run and in collecting and delivering all of those toys and gift certificates. “I just can’t believe that they got that many toys for our kids!” Cox remarked in amazement. This year’s ride included over 150 riders. However, other members of the community also donated toys and gift certificates to the benefit ride. Members of Canajoharie’s Volunteer Fire Department, the Hearn Agency, W. Davis Agency, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and others made
Justin D. Snell, Cindy Wall, donations. “Jim Blair has graciously Gregory G. Conrad, Jeff F. given to various benefits and Hunt, Donna Buley and memorials in the years that I Dustin K. Watson. have known him, and in turn, “The whole town apprecithose who witnessed his ates what Jim did!” Cox said. altruism are there to return “Everyone here in Prattsville the favor,” said employee can’t praise him enough!” Christina Pirozej. “He is definitely the one who got this off the ground many years ago when they used to have rides for the St. Johnsville Nursing Home.” Pirozej says that at that time slippers, house coats, magazines and other items were collected and donated to the nursing facility. “We like motorcycles and we like to help people,” Blair states simply. “We’ve been throwing rides for 18 years for people in need — in memory of loved ones who have passed away. It’s just a nice ride!” This year the Toy Run was held in memory of Jack Blair, Jim Blair asked Father Dennis Murphy to Raymond D. Hart, bless the bikes before the run began.
Bikes packed in like sardines, lined up and down the street, announcing the beginning of the annual Toy Run hosted by Jim's Irish Harbor in Canajoharie. Photos by Elizabeth A. Tomlin

Arkell Hall Adult Home celebrates 60 years of caring by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Movie footage in black and white depicts days gone by on the large flat screen TV. Elderly ladies dressed in old-fashioned attire from the early 50’s wave out from the screen, laughing and obviously enjoying the fact that some unknown face is taking a movie starring them. These scenes are from the early days at Arkell Hall Adult Home, where all of the residents continue to be stars and where this movie greeted folks who came to take part in the recent celebration of Arkell Hall’s 60th anniversary. “Sixty years is an important milestone,” said Arkell Hall Director Kim Lawrence. “It is important to commemorate it.” Lawrence had planned the celebration with the assistance of Arkell Foundation Secretary Melanie Shibley. The home was opened in 1952 under the bequest of Mrs. Bertelle Arkell Barbour, a world traveler and a patron of the arts, whose artistic expressions are viewed in the fine carved woodwork, spectacular stained glass windows and beautiful gardens still in place on the grounds. “We are so grateful for the foresight that the Arkell family had, leaving such a beautiful home to accommodate the community,” Lawrence stated. “It is important to us that our residents see this as their home and feel secure here.” Lawrence said that about 150 relatives, community members and local dignitaries including Canajoharie Mayor Frances Avery and Village Trustee Ron Dievendorf came to help celebrate the occasion.
Residents, some in their late 90s, greeted the visitors. Although Arkell Hall was originally only open to ladies, it now accommodates both men and women, 65 years or older, who qualify for the high quality, assisted living home. “Residents must be somewhat independent and ambulatory,” Lawrence said. “We’re here to support them with all meals, medications, transportation to appointments and to provide daily activities.” Activity Director Linda Klump plans outings, art classes, annual seasonal trips and many daily activities and programs to keep the residents active both physically and in mind and spirit. Lawrence credits all of the staff working together that made the 60th anniversary celebration of Arkell Hall — and makes every day — such a success.
From left) Arkell Hall resident 97-year-old Mary Renison, is joined by her daughter, Arkell Hall Advisory Committee Chairperson Bonnie Kerr, and 97-year-old resident Florence Becker at the celebration.
Arkell Foundation Secretary Melanie Shibley; Arkell Hall Director Kim Lawrence; Arkell Foundation President & CEO Joseph Santangelo; Arkell Center Program Assistant Joan Cimino and Arkell Hall Activities Director Linda Klump were all on hand to greet guests at Arkell residents Frances Shults (left) and Marguerite Arkell Hall's 60th Anniversary celebration. Whatchamacallits The evolution of the can opener is seen in the picture at right. Societies have been storing their food in cans for centuries due to food safety needs, but before the can opener, retrieving the food from its processed tin prison was quite the ordeal! Originally, people used a hammer and chisel to pry them open. The oldest can opener pictured here is the knife-like instrument second from right. This is a later version of America’s first can opener, invented by Connecticut resident Ezra Warner in 1858. It worked by a stab-and-pry tecnique. His design was widely adopted by the U.S. military, in need of a convenient way for Civil War soldiers to open their cans of food. Because it was rather dangerous, howev-

by Samantha Mazzotta Mineral buildup around faucets Q: I have a recurring problem with mineral deposits building up around my faucets. How can I reduce these, and is there an easier way to clean it off the faucets and fixtures? — Carl in Ocala, FL A: Mineral buildup around faucets, also known as “scale,” is common in areas such as yours that have hard water — water containing high levels of minerals, particularly those containing calcium or magnesium. Hard water makes it difficult for soaps to lather up, which is inconvenient for
bathers. But more serious is the potential for scale buildup inside water heaters. The most effective way to reduce the prevalence of scale is to install a water softener where the water enters the house. The size and type of water softener unit depends on how much water you use per day on average and the hardness of the water. You can bring in a professional to test the water, assess your needs and estimate the cost of the installation, or, if you’re experienced with plumbing, you can install the softener yourself. Some important points to remember are: Get more than
one estimate if possible, and don’t allow work to begin until you’ve approved it in writing. Make sure the installer locates the water softener unit at least 10 feet from the water heater, and that a remote bypass also is installed (this allows you to bypass the water-softener unit if it shuts down for any reason so that the house still gets water). Water softeners last for many years and operate with few problems, making them a good value for the amount of money you’ll spend on parts and installation. In the meantime, clean scale buildup
from faucets and showerheads by shutting off the water supply to the affected faucets, and unscrewing the shower head and faucet aerators. Wash them in soapy water and rinse well. Then, place in a stainless steel or Teflon lined pan with a solution of half vinegar and half water. Simmer the hardware for five minutes, cool, then scrub with a nylon brush to remove the deposits. HOME TIP: To reduce mineral buildup and lengthen the life of your water heater, drain it twice a year via the drain spigot. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

by Samantha Mazzotta Plumbing Tool Kit for an Apartment Q: I’m moving into my first apartment, and my dad said that I should have some basic tools around for plumbing problems to keep damage from happening while we’re waiting for the repairman. What are the best tools to have to take care of plumbing emergencies? -Tamara in Tuscon, Ariz. A: The most indispensible tool in the apartment plumbing toolbox is, in my experience, the plunger. This inexpensive piece of equipment can stop toilets from overflowing and unblock sinks
and shower drains without doing damage to the pipes. When choosing a plunger, go for a basic “force cup” model (this is the classic plunger with a simple bell), which works best on sinks and drains. If you want something a little more powerful for toilet clogs, pick up a second plunger with a center cone, which can increase the vacuum when plunging toilets. These don’t fit sink drains very well, though. It’s also good to keep a few more tools around for other plumbing-related work. While many apartment management companies will provide more than
emergency repair — they’ll also install the shower head you want, or help with minor repairs like dripping faucets — some landlords don’t provide more than emergency service. So add these to your plumbing toolkit: • An adjustable wrench and/or channel-locking pliers, which can fit varying widths of pipe. • Flat-head and Phillips-head screwdrivers. • An “offset” screwdriver to help you reach screws at weird angles. • Spare washers, orings and screws. • Electrician’s or duct tape, and plastic or rubber sheeting that can be cut to size and wrapped around a leaky pipe for a tem-
porary repair while waiting for the handyman. • Teflon pipe tape, used to seal pipe threads. If you’re interested or have permission to make more heavyduty adjustments or repairs, adding a couple of sizes of pipe wrenches to the toolkit is helpful, as is purchasing a valve-seating tool, which cleans valve seats of sink faucets (a handy tool when fixing a leaky faucet). by Larry Cox 1950s Toys Q: My husband has a large collection of toys from the 1950s. Many are in original boxes. Since the time has come for us to liquidate, we hope you can help us. — Susan and Ken, Tyler, Texas A: Toy chests have become treasure chests during the past few decades. As Baby Boomers age, many scramble to find and purchase things they remember from their childhoods. This increased interest and demand has caused prices to soar. For example, a Red Ryder Daisy BB gun in its original box, which sold for $50 just a short time ago, now is valued at about $200. To find out the value of your toys, I suggest you pur-
chase a copy of one of the better price guides, Hake’s Price Guide to Toys by Ted Hake. Hake also conducts toy auctions throughout the year. Contact him at P.O. Box 1444, York, PA 17404. Q: I have two freestanding dolls that I believe are made of celluloid. They have painted faces and hair. I would appreciate anything you can tell me about them. — Millie, Sun City West, AZ A: Without knowing the maker of your doll, there isn’t much I can tell you. There are celluloid dolls that are quite valuable, others that aren’t. To determine which, you need to consult an expert. As with most professionals, you should expect to pay for their services. (NAPSA) — With a flood of real estate listings on the market, sellers continuously search for ways to stand out. The process is called staging. Done correctly, it can make a house look bigger, brighter, cleaner, warmer and make homebuyers want to buy it. To help, here are some tips: • Curb Appeal: The exterior of the house is the first thing potential buyers see; make sure it’s bright, clean and inviting. • Clean: Clean from top to bottom, getting rid of clutter and
organizing the space. Don’t forget the ceilings and fans. • Brighten Up: Do what you can to help buyers envision living in the space. Make sure windows are streak free. Hide personal pictures. Instead, decorate with fresh flowers. • Living Space: Choose neutral tones for the walls and furniture. Slipcovers are an inexpensive way to spruce up old furniture. Add pillows for pops of color. For more staging and DIY tips, visit www.Homes.com’s Idea Gallery.

Autumn leaves Fall is the picture-perfect time of year when many drivers take to the road to view the autumn colors. The leaves are beautiful to see, but when wet or in piles on the roads, they present driving hazards unique to the season. The Car Care Council reminds drivers to prepare for fall driving conditions by having their vehicles’ tires, brakes and wipers checked before heading out on the road. Tires can affect the car’s ride, handling, traction and safety, and are a critical connection between the car and the road in all types of driving conditions. To maximize tire life and safety, check the inflation pressure and the tread depth, and inspect the sidewalls for cracks or punctures. As a general rule, tires should be rotated every 6,000 miles and balanced. To help ensure the performance and safety of wipers, blades should be replaced every six months or when cracked, cut, torn, streaking or chattering.

Car Care Council announces Fall airing dates for Car Care clips
As part of its web video series, the nonprofit Car Care Council will be releasing four new segments of its award-winning consumer video, “Auto Service and Repair: What to Expect,” to the council’s YouTube channel, Facebook page and Twitter feed every two weeks at 9:30 a.m. EST, starting Tuesday, Sept. 25. The videos will be promoted on the social media channels with the hashtag #CarCareClips. “The goal of the Car Care Clips is give consumers a behind-thescenes look at the repair shop experience to help calm the anxiety that many consumers feel when taking their vehicles to an auto repair shop so they don’t postpone necessary maintenance and repairs,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “The four new episodes lay out the
realistic expectations of working with a repair shop as well as highlight the actual repair process.” The final four episodes will be shared on the council’s YouTube channel, Facebook page and Twitter feed as follows: • Sept. 25 – Why Pay for Diagnostics? • Oct. 9 – Buying the Right Part • Oct. 23 – Preventive Mainte-nance is Key • Nov. 6 – Before You Leave the Shop Checklist The full “Auto Service and Repair: What to Expect” video provides a wealth of information and straight talk on such topics as finding the right auto repair facility, what to expect at the shop and what questions to ask. The video also covers the real truth about consumer rights and the manufacturer’s warranty, and is posted on www.carcare.org.

DEC finalizes New York State River Herring regulations New York adopted the final changes to regulations that will reduce fishing mortality of river herring and create a sustainable fishery, New
York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens announced Sept. 5. River herring (alewife and
blueback herring) are anadromous fish that spend most of their life in the ocean but return to their natal rivers to spawn.

“River herring are part of New York’s native fauna and need to be more intensively managed to provide long-term, sustainable populations,” said Commissioner Martens. “These unique fish are important to New York’s waters and many New Yorkers enjoy their return to tidal waters each spring.” In the Hudson River, commercial and recreational anglers primarily use these fish as bait for striped bass, but some are taken for human consumption. Because information on the status of the river herring populations is available for the Hudson River and its tributaries and DEC can assess that status of these populations, a continuing fishery is allowed, though a reduced fishery. Since little data is available on stock status in other New York waters, implementing a moratorium on river herring fishing is required. The adopted rule restricts the current fishery in the Hudson River, and all tributaries and embayments by:
• Establishing a recreational open season and a daily creel limit. • Permitting angling only (e.g. no nets) in the tributaries and embayments. • Reducing the size of allowable nets in the Hudson River proper. • Requiring charter boats to register with the DEC to be eligible for a special boat creel limit. The rules for commercial fishers include: • Increasing restrictions on net use and size. • Establishing a 36hour no-fishing escapement period for all fishing gears. • Increasing monthly reporting requirements for their catches. The list of waters where the harvest of river herring is prohibited are: the Delaware River and its tributaries, all streams in Bronx, Kings, Manhattan, Nassau, Richmond, Suffolk, and Queens counties, and Westchester County streams that are tributary to the East River or Long Island Sound. sion (ASMFC), a cooperative interstate fisheries management organization, of which New York State is a member, recently confirmed that coast- wide river herring stocks are depleted. The blockage of rivers by dams, habitat degradation and overfishing led to the depletion of the river herring stocks along the Atlantic coast. In 2008, ASMFC adopted an amendment to the ASMFC Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Shad and River Herring requiring states to adopt measures that would reduce fishing mortality and allow the river herring stocks to rebuild. New York State promulgated these regulation changes to comply with the amendment and to protect the local river herring stocks.
