September 29, 2012 Hello Again, So what’s the good word? How about the word ‘asleep’? How many times have you heard ‘he was fast asleep’ or ‘he is fast asleep’? Try it sometime when you are planning to sleep. First put on a pedometer and see if you were actually fast or inactive, dull or sluggish. I can hear it now, “when I woke up I was fast asleep.” I worked with a fellow I could say, “He was a slow sleeper, not fast.” I never witnessed anything about him I could call fast. Fast asleep? I would lay odds he slept slowly and often, you know, even asleep on the job. He could actually do the impossible when he was awake. He looked like he was asleep and when he was asleep he could act like he was awake. You have to admit that takes practice. Now that you caught me in the writing mood, what do you know about the lonely pencil? For some of you young squirts that was one of those 7 inch yellow things with an eraser on top we used to write with. In the 1970s Frank L. Remington wrote (maybe penciled) these words: “Doubtless, the lead pencil qualifies as one of the most used, yet least appreciated pieces of merchandise in the world. Pencils possess such high utilitarian value that if all lines drawn by them in one year stretched in a continuous line, it would be long enough to reach to the moon and back some 50,000 times.” Perhaps the most surprising thing about the lead pencil is that it’s not lead at all. The “lead” is actually graphite. I do not use a pencil when writing “Hello Again”; I’ve graduated to a ballpoint pen. Maybe one of these days I will try one of those new fan-dangled computers. Don’t give up on me — I might make it yet. As a youngster I remember Charlie Hearn, when in his store, kept a pencil in his shirt pocket, while his clerk Robert placed his behind his left ear. Let’s see you do that with a computer. I wonder how many computer printers it would take — before burn out — to draw a line to the moon and back 50,000 times. If you come across the answer to that question forget it — it doesn’t make good sense to start with. Maybe you would be more productive by falling fast asleep. I wonder when you’re fast asleep if time goes by faster or slower. I think I will stay awake sometime to find out. Now that I have you pondering. Lay your two hands down on the table with your palms down. Starting with your little finger of your right hand count it as Number 10 and the next as 9 in order down to your right thumb — which is number 6 then add the other five fingers on your left hand and you will have 11 fingers. Now do you still think the world is round? Why don’t the Chinese on the bottom fall off? Just think the teachers out in Chicago who teach kids they have only 10 fingers and you can’t fall off the world are bucking for more than a 16 percent raise in pay. Are these teachers during this financial crisis patriots or just plain selfish? Just imagine you were in a jet airplane 200 miles below the earth around the bottom side would you have to travel up or down to get back to the ground.

Now you may understand why one of my college professors claimed I came from three miles north of plowed ground. I had to forgive him, he was a product of higher education. Sometimes those folk just plain do not understand how we country folk ponder. I have a friend by the name of Pete. I was wondering if I should order an ice cream cone or a chocolate milk shake. After pondering for a bit he said order both, then you’ll be sure to get the one you want. Now back home we would have called that horse sense. My wife asked, “Did you know his family owns the ice cream machine? That is one for Pete. If the great philosophers of the world were so smart why were they not rich. A friend passed this article about lemons on — through me to you — could it be true? The surprising benefits of lemon! Lemon (Citrus) is a miraculous product to kill cancer cells. It is 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy. Why do we not know about that? Because there are laboratories interested in making a synthetic version that will bring them huge profits. You can now help a friend in need by letting him/her know that lemon juice is beneficial in preventing the disease. Its taste is pleasant and it does not produce the horrific effects of chemotherapy. How many people will die while this closely guarded secret is kept, so as not to jeopardize the beneficial multimillionaires large corporations? You can eat the fruit in different ways: you can eat the pulp, juice press, prepare drinks, sorbets, pastries, etc… It is credited with many virtues, but the most interesting is the effect it produces on cysts and tumors. This plant is a proven remedy against cancers of all types. Some say it is very useful in all variants of cancer. It is considered also as an anti microbial spectrum against bacterial infections and fungi, effective against internal parasites and worms, it regulates blood pressure, which is too high, and an antidepressant, combats stress and nervous disorders. The source of this information is fascinating: it comes from one of the largest drug manufacturers in the world, and says that after more than 20 laboratory tests since 1970, the extracts revealed that It destroys the malignant cells in 12 cancers, including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreas. The compounds of this tree showed 10,000 times better than the product Adriamycin, a drug normally used chemotherapeutically in the world, slowing the growth of cancer cells. And what is even more astonishing: this type of therapy with lemon extract only destroys malignant cancer cells and it does not affect healthy cells. So place a lemon in your freezer, and then grate it on your meal every day. It is a key to make your foods tastier and you get to live healthier and longer! That’s the lemon secret! What’s the major advantage of using the whole lemon other than preventing waste and adding new taste to your dishes? Well, you see lemon peels contain as much as 5 to 10 times more vitamins than the lemon juice itself. And yes, that’s what you’ve been wasting. It’s also good that lemon peels are health rejuvenators in eradicating toxic elements in the body. How do successful people think? First, things first, First, they take time to think. How do people receive help from God? First they take time to pray and ask for help. The Holy Bible says we have not because we ask not.’ Travel your life with God and you will never be alone. Sincerely, Fred Lee and the Lee Family

Tomlin More than 2,500 enthusiastic attendees of all ages visited Montgomery County’s 12th annual Sundae on the Farm, which was hosted this year by Ayers’ Morgandy Farm on Paris Road, Fort Plain, NY. Colorful agricultural displays and informative demonstrations were provided by many Ag educators and exhibitors including Central NY Cornell C o o p e r a t i v e Extension, Cabot Creamery, NY Farm Bureau, Montgomery Co. Dairy Princess, NY Beef Industry, NYS Egg Producers, NY Pork Producers, Montgomery Co. Soil

vided by the Eastern Regional Draft Horse Association, a petting zoo — including Conboy Llamas, and the music of the Empty Pockets Band along with the annual milking contest provided a wide range of entertainment. An endless line of children waited, some not so patiently, to have their faces painted by the Mohawk Valley FFA President Kait Isaac and Vice President Stephanie Arndt, while other FFA members parked cars. Free ice cream sundaes and free Chobani yogurt added to the fun. Four-year-old twins Giovanni and Gianna Almaviva of Fort Plain attended the event with their Aunt Beverly Davis. The twins eagerly approached the huge black and white oxen displayed by Puthaven Farm, only to shrink

back as one of the immense beasts swung its head to glance their way. Their aunt laughed and commented, “We follow Sundae on the Farm every year, from place to place, wherever it goes.” Three-year -old Mason Hart and his 5year-old sister Maya of Caroga, NY were visiting the Sundae on the Farm for their first time. They attended with their mom Aimee and their dad Michael. “We heard about the event through the Wheelerville School,” said Michael. Maya and Mason lingered at a vendor’s booth where a pile of colorful pumpkins was on display. Many hours of hard work and many hands went into making the day a success. “It’s great to see a lot of hard work by many different people pay off as it did for this event,” said Montgomery County Farm Bureau President Martin Kelly. Kelly was also the Chairman for this 12th annual Sundae on the Farm. “We put this annual event on to draw people in, so they can learn more about agriculture and the importance that it plays in all of our lives.” “Many thanks go out to Morgandy Farm for hosting the event and to all of the 4-H family members and Farm Bureau families! They make this event happen!”

First Annual Fort Plain Chalk of Fame The rain held off until just after 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, allowing artists from as far away as Schenectady to create spectacular displays of chalk art on approximately 75 sidewalk squares bordering Haslett Park in Fort Plain. Many boxes of chalk were turned into a wide variety of colorful, creative, greatly impressive expressions in the First Annual Fort Plain Chalk of Fame. Organized as an opportunity for artists of all backgrounds and ages to enjoy an exercise in sidewalk creativity, this horizontal chalk art event brought an estimated 300 visitors to the park on the breezy, warm, first day of autumn. Musical entertainment was graciously provided by the incredibly talented local musicians Jocelyn and Christian Arndt of “The Dependents”. Planners are already drawing on this first experience with chunks of compacted calcite to fine-tune next year’s colorful, calciferous extravaganza bordering the park.

Whatchamacallits A carpenter works with wood, a mechanic with engines, and a butcher with meat. Those are very broad job descriptions that not every industry has. Some occupations in labor industries are far more specific in skill set. A wheelwright, for example. As the title suggests, a wheelwright works with wheels. A wheelwright is more recognized as an occupation from the 19th century, as it traditionally referred to the fixing of buggy rims and wheels. The tool in the photo was one of the industry’s most utilized. Known as a “Wheelwright’s Traveler,” the instrument was used to measure the circumference of a wagon wheel by rolling it along the rim and counting the revolutions it made. Collecting by Larry Cox Autographs Q: I bought a signed photo of Jean Harlow at an antique shop for $1,500. It is a beautiful portrait, and I am about to have it framed. Before I do, I want to send you a Xerox of the photo to see if you can help me date it and perhaps tell me how much you think it is worth. — Bob, Homestead, FL A: Jean Harlow didn’t sign many photographs. She was too busy making films. She turned that task over to her mother, and the two women had very different signatures. I am certain that you have one of the photos signed by Harlow’s mother, and as such not worth a fraction of what you paid. I suggest you return the photo to the dealer for a refund. Q: I have a letter signed by John F. Kennedy thanking me for my volunteer work during his presidential campaign. I have kept it for more than 50 years, but the time has come to sell it. Any suggestions? — Ben, Macon, GA A: First you need to have it authenticated. The sobering fact is that most presidential letters since about 1960 were signed by auto-pens. These are

special machines that — 24 hours a day, seven days a week — sign letters such as the one you have. To find out if it is, indeed, a personal letter from JFK, the time has come to consult with an autograph expert. I recommend Brian Kathenes, a certified appraiser of autographs and related materials. His contact information is P.O. Box 482, Hope, NJ 07844; www.nacvalue.com; and brian@nacvalue.com. Q: I have a sheet of first-class postage stamps that are 12 cents. Any idea of when they were issued? — Ken, Abilene, Texas A: Your stamps were issued between 1981, when the postage rate was hiked from 10 cents, to 1985, when it jumped again to 15 cents per stamp. Q: I have an original soundtrack recording of “M*A*S*H.” I have been offered $30 for it. — Susan, Portsmouth, VA A: Take the money and run. According to several price guides I consulted, your LP was issued in 1970 and is worth about $10 in above-average condition. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Questions 518-725-0922

Collecting by Larry Cox Mustache Cup Q: I have a mustache cup that I purchased at a flea market. I paid $10 and think it could be worth much more. — Susan, Metarie, LA A: Maybe and maybe not. It depends on who made the mustache cup, when, and its design. Victorian-era mustache cups are always in higher demand than those made during the 1970s and ‘80s. In recent years, mustache cups and shaving mugs have become more collectible, and good ones more difficult to find. Look for cups and mugs with elaborate Victorian designs or occupational mugs. A shaving mug with a fireman and hose cart recently sold at auction for $450. In special demand are mustache cups with matching saucers and left-handed cups and mugs. Q: I have several paperback novels from the late 1940s and early ‘50s that I think might be worth a little money. They belonged to an uncle who took meticulous care of his property. How can I find out current values? — Steve, Ramona, CA A: One of the better references is “The Antique Trader Collectible Paperback Price Guide” by Gary

Lovisi (Krause, $19.99). This book proves that you can, indeed, sometimes judge a book by its cover. The colorful, edgy illustrations on the cover of many paperbacks from this period often can translate into real money. For example, the lurid novels about sex, drugs and juvenile delinquency are currently commanding top prices. Mint copies of “Born to Be Bad” by Sheldon Lord, “Man Hungry” by Alan Marshall, “Incest Street” by Carlton Miller, and “Thrill Kids,” a Gold Medal book with a James Meese cover, are worth as much as $100 each. As with most collectibles, rarity and condition are extremely important. Q: I recently found an “Uncle Wiggily Water Color Box,” with 16 little vats of colors and a brush, all contained in a metal box. On the lid is Uncle Wiggily in full color. Do you have any idea of its value. I don’t think the set was ever used. — Mark, Rio Rancho, NM A: In mint condition, $50 to $100, according to “A Century of Crayola Collectibles: A Price Guide” by Bonnie B. Rushlow and published by Hobby House Press. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Professional energy assessments generally go into great detail to assess your home’s energy use. The energy auditor will do a room-by-room examination of the residence, as well as a thorough examination of past utility bills. Preparing for an energy assessment Before the energy auditor visits your house, make a list of any existing problems such as condensation and uncomfortable or drafty rooms. Have copies or a summary of the home’s yearly energy bills. Auditors use this information to establish what to look for during the audit. The auditor first examines the outside of the home to determine the size of the house and its features (i.e., wall area, number and size of windows). The auditor then will analyze the residents’ behavior: • Is anyone home during working hours? • What is the average thermostat setting for summer and winter? • How many people live here? • Is every room in use? Your answers may help uncover some simple ways to reduce your household’s energy consumption. Walk through your home with the auditors as they work, and ask questions. They may use equipment to detect sources of energy

loss, such as blower doors, infrared cameras, furnace efficiency meters, and surface thermometers. Finding and selecting an energy auditor There are several places where you can locate professional energy assessment or auditing services. • Your state or local government energy or weatherization office may help you identify a local company or organization that performs audits. • Your electric or gas utility may conduct residential energy assessments or recommend local auditors. • Your telephone directory under headings beginning with the word “Energy” may list companies that perform residential energy assessments. • The Residential Energy Services Network provides a directory of certified energy raters and auditors near you. Before contracting with an energy auditing company, you should take the following steps: • Get several references, and contact them all. Ask if they were satisfied with the work. • Call the Better Business Bureau and ask about any complaints against the company. • Make sure the energy auditor uses a calibrated blower door. Rejoice! Churches host Block Party in Fort Plain by Elizabeth A Tomlin Rejoice! That is what the theme for the two-day Church Block Party in Fort Plain was about and that is exactly what folks did. “For the past three years, the members of the Victorious Life Church of RMI-Fort Plain, NY, acting as the host church for the village churches, has sponsored the annual Church Block Party,” said Reverend Donnie Semple. “Each year we have been able to grow and expand.” Semple said this year they were hoping to use Haslett Park in the Village of Fort Plain for the occasion. However, the village went one step further and encouraged them to use Wiles Park to accommodate the growing number of folks attending the event. A variety of Christian bands performed all day, while horseshoe tournaments, hayrides, Praise Puppet shows and other activities were available.

Mohawk Valley pastors (from left) Pr. Charlie Houle, Fort Plain; Pr. David Bowley, Palatine Bridge; Pr. Don Semple, Fort Plain; Pr. Mike Yezierski, St. Johnsville; and Pr. Fred Jones, Sharon Springs worked together to provide a weekend long block party with a Biblical message. A Prayer Station was available for people who wanted prayer for themselves — or for others. Several pastors from the Mohawk Valley attended the event, while churches that could not send pastors, supported it. Pastor Trudy Daley, from the Time of Healing ministries, came from Utica to provide counseling and healing prayer. “This year was a relaunch of the Church Block Party

from in the village on South Street, to Wiles Park,” said Semple. “It

major themes of the Church Block Party were accomplished.

was to reintroduce the Church Block Party to the community in its hopefully permanent, new location for years to come. It also reintroduced the Church Block Party to the Valley Churches.” Semple said the two

First to rejoice, and second for families and churches to come together for communion and fellowship. “We made a lot of new friends,” Semple said. “And old friends came back out to join the Praise!”

every two weeks at 9:30 a.m. EST, starting Tuesday, Sept. 25. The videos will be promoted on the social media channels with the hashtag #CarCareClips. “The goal of the Car Care Clips is give consumers a behind-thescenes look at the repair shop experience to help calm the anxiety that many consumers feel when taking their vehicles to an auto repair shop so they don’t postpone necessary maintenance and repairs,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “The four new episodes lay out the realistic expectations of working with a repair shop as well as highlight the actual repair process.” The final four episodes will be shared on the council’s YouTube channel, Facebook page and Twitter feed as follows: • Sept. 25 – Why Pay for Diagnostics? • Oct. 9 – Buying the Right Part • Oct. 23 – Preventive Maintenance is Key • Nov. 6 – Before You Leave the Shop Checklist The full “Auto Service and Repair: What to Expect” video provides a wealth of information and straight talk on such topics as finding the right auto repair facility, what to expect at the shop and what questions to ask. The video also covers the real truth about consumer rights and the manufacturer’s warranty, and is posted on www. carcare.org.

Automotive and Car Care

Having a car that is presented well inside and out may boost the amount of money and potential of a resale on your vehicle. Even vehicle owners who don't anticipate selling their vehicles in the near future should maintain the vehicles to ensure they are safe and sound. After home and work, a car is where many people spend most of their time. As a result, a vehicle can easily become soiled, scratched or overrun with clutter. Maintaining the interior of your vehicle need not take much time or effort, but it should be done often enough to keep on top of the mess.
