October 6, 2012 Hello Again, If a yarn is worth writing about once, then it should be worth reading twice. We published Ed’s yarn back on September 13, 2010. While my friend Ed is a right upstanding sort of fellow, on occasions he is apt to tell a yarn which smacks more of Irish blarney. You can decide if you can accept it as gospel truth, or if the truth was helped out a little bit. Ed tells this story, or yarn, in such a downright serious manner, one could be tempted to become a believer in his words. “When we were young, our family was very poor. Just to survive, Dad kept a cow for milk and butter, a few hens for eggs and chicken dinners, along with a few pigs. One night a thief broke into the barn, stole some eggs and a couple of our best laying hens and ventured further into the pigpen and took a couple of piglets. Both Dad and Mom were so sure it would happen again, they moved the sow with her piglets into our house for safekeeping. For the next few years Mom would take the table scraps along with leftover mixed pig rations and feed the pigs in the cellar. One morning, Mom slipped and got hurt on the cellar stairs. Dad, being the inventive type, cut an 8-inch hole in the floor under the kitchen table. After that we just tossed our scraps while we were eating down through the hole to the pigs in the cellar. A busy-body type neighbor heard about the pigs being kept in our cellar and called the Board of Health. One day, a health agent showed up at our door. Mom answered her knock which seemed extra loud and sharp. There she stood in her gray flannel suit holding her wooden cane, which had been used to rap on our front door and asked if the complaint about the pigs was true. ‘Oh yes!’ Mom said, and invited her in to see the pigs through the hole under the kitchen table. To say the least, the agent was flabbergasted and with an all-knowing voice looking over her glasses and down her nose to Mom asked, ‘Don’t you realize how terribly unhealthy this is? It will cause all kinds of disease and sickness.’ All Mom replied was, ‘I don’t think so, we’ve been feeding the hogs that way for several years and not one of the pigs has ever gotten sick.’” So — what has that got to do with the price of milk or where a bread earner can find a job? Is it possible that this is another example, however humorous, of the government sticking its nose into something that was none of its business? The assured facts are that the house and the pigs belonged to Ed’s family. No pigs or people ever came down with a life threatening disease, and the pigs were fed and raised by Ed’s folks, not the government. We can also assume the government health department lady was on the government payroll and arrived at the family house by a car which belonged to the government, using up tires, oil, and gasoline paid for in part by Ed’s family and other taxpayers. Ed’s family did not request government assistance or intervention or want any. Naturally the not-needed or not-requested government lady could expect a lifetime job with healthcare and retirement. Statistics would prove that her department and cost would grow every year.

I ponder — is this not an appropriate example of how our county, state and national governments keep on sticking our unwanted, unneeded noses into other countries’ business? Where do we get the right to know what’s best for them? How about this for a little pondering: During the Second World War, Japan, Germany, and Italy were our enemies. During the 1950s, Japan, Germany, and Italy were wonderful friends and allies. During the Second World War, the Russians were our buddies and by the 1950s our biggest enemy. It seems we cannot even figure out who our friends are, yet we can teach them how to manage their own countries by outfitting them with a U.S. military base, lend or give them huge amounts of money (money which we borrowed), and feel we can sit in judgment. Now we are faced with another problem: One of our major U.S. political candidates is advocating a bigger and naturally a more controlling government. The other political candidate claims he will cut down the size of our federal government, reducing cost and control over “we the people.” Now to answer the question, what has this got to do with the price of milk or where a bread earner can find a job? If we had fewer government paid employees which cost U.S. businesses tons, the price of milk could be lower and companies could have more employees. United States corporations presently pay the highest taxes in the world. It’s a fact: higher taxes, fewer employees. Soon it will be decision time. What form of government do we want? Rather, what form of government are you going to vote for? It’s fall again with cool days and colder nights. The leaves are turning more colorful every day. Soon the geese will be flying overhead. You’ve heard the expression, “Dumber than a goose!” Guess who spends its summer in the beautiful north and winters in the south? Don’t believe everything you hear. A fancy big touring car pulled up near an old timer sitting on a stump near a cluster of mailboxes and asked, “Have you lived here all your life?” “Not yit,” was the reply. “Old timer, where does this road go?” “Lived here for nigh-on-to 80 years and it hasn’t gone anywhere yet.” “Well then, if you were going to go to Cooperstown, which way would you turn?” “If I was going there, I wouldn’t start from here.” “Well sir, which way would you tell me not to go?” “If you go up this road until you come to the Schenevus turn, I wouldn’t go that way.” “By the way, old timer, does Jim Morton live here?” “Nope.” “Do you know where he lives?” “Yep, he lives in that house over there.” “How long have you known Jim?” “All my life.” “Do you think he might be home now?” “Nope, he’s not and won’t be for another hour or so.” “Well thanks, old timer. We appreciate your help. By the way, what’s your name?” “Glad I could help, stranger. Come back again — my name is Jim Morton.” Today’s weather is overcast, wet and on the chilly side, but if we wait for a few days this area will be blessed with beautiful warmth and fall colors. To be on the safe side — if you go for a walk, take your bumbershoot with you. Looking forward while being grateful for today is a secret for happiness which God shares with all. Prayer does work. I pray for you, your good health, and for the future of this nation. Our nation under God — yours and mine. He is our God, and this is our nation. Fred Lee and the Lee Family

Whatchamacallits Many are familiar with the “spork,” a clever invention combining a spoon and fork, giving people the ease of eating a meal without having to switch back and forth between utensils. It is considered a staple camping gear to many “outdoorsy” types. The tool pictured here follows a similar idea as the spork, this time combining fork with a knife. Far more than for just camping convenience, this tool — popularly referred to as a “Nelson Knife” — was invented for individuals with prosthetic arms or weak hand grips. It is fashioned using a “rocker knife” for leverage when cutting and sharp tines on the tip for stabbing the food. Some have explained it as a pointy cheese knife without the holes.
This tool is from the collection of Willis “Skip” Barshied. A tribute to Retired Fire Chief Sherman Rockwell held at South Minden Firehouse by Elizabeth A. Tomlin In an emotional ceremony evoking memories and tears, friends, relatives and local officials joined together to honor 81year-old Sherman Rockwell, of Minden, NY. Rockwell, a Veteran of the US Army, is noted as being a “pioneer in creating fire protection for the rural area of Western Montgomery County.” He led like-minded
community members to develop a fire protection plan in 1963, when he had only just returned home from serving his country. In 1964 he proudly became a Charter Member of the South Minden Fire Dept, serving as Chief for 30 out of the 48 years the department has been in existence. Rockwell passed his virtue of serving the community onto his sons and grandsons
and his influence in the community was noted, spreading to others, culminating in donations of property and enabling the fire house to be built and enlarged through a succession of many fund raisers. Fire trucks were purchased and often donations came out of the pockets of the members for the betterment of the department. Family members

spoke of incidences, some comical, which were examples of Rockwell’s dedication to the fire department, his family and his community. M o n t g o m e r y County Sheriff Mike Amato, Undersheriff Jeff Smith, Minden Supervisor Tom Quackenbush and Montgomery County E m e r g e n c y Management Director Dwight Schwabrow also spoke in tribute to Rockwell. Letters from Governor Cuomo and Senator Hugh Farley praised Rockwell on his dedication and commitment to his community. Senator Farley commended Rockwell, stating in his letter that Rockwell was “worthy of special recognition.” Schwabrow presented Rockwell with a mounted ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ from the Montgomery County Office of Fire Coordinator. Sherman D. Rockwell’s grandson, Duane Rockwell, who is the current South Minden Fire Department Chief, presented his grandfather a plaque, honoring him for “48 years of dedicated service to the department and the community. It is because of your great dedication and leadership that every member of this great department can serve with pride and loyalty.”

Local photographer’s waterfalls exhibited at Arkell Museum by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Edward Smathers is passionate about photographing waterfalls. He was recently asked to take part in collaboration with two other noted waterfall scholars to document and photograph New York waterfalls to be published in a book. The book, simply titled ‘Waterfalls of New York State’, is now available to the public. Smathers will be holding a book signing beginning at 3 p.m. on Oct. 8 at the Arkell Library and Museum in Canajoharie. This date coincides with the gallery opening at Arkell Museum, which will be featuring waterfalls and nature photographs of Smathers. Smathers, who now resides in Canajoharie with his wife Jessica (Painter), is originally from Warsaw, NY. He studied Engineering, an experience that he credits as adding another dimension to his photography. “The main purpose for my work has always been to educate the public about the beauty of New York State,” Smathers commented. “I am always in search of Local photographer the perfect photograph.” Edward Smathers Photo by Elizabeth A. Family Fundamentals: What to do when your child is bullying others by Martha Filipic Late last school year, I was surprised when my son’s school said he was bullying another student. He is about to start the fourth grade and I’m not sure what to say to him to make sure he doesn’t do this again. Any advice? First, it sounds like you have already taken an important first step: Admit that your child was in the wrong. It’s a difficult mindset for many parents to adopt, but it’s vital to get past the stage of denial so you can begin to address the problem. Child development professionals say that children who become bullies are often modeling behavior they see in others. Has your son himself been
bullied? Has he witnessed or been the victim of acts of aggression, intimidation or violence at home or at school? Don’t make the mistake of assuming you would know if your son had been exposed to such experiences. Children are often afraid or embarrassed to tell adults about their victimization, or believe it wouldn’t do any good anyway. • Studies on children who bully others has found that bullies tend to: • Have higher levels of anger. • Believe that manipulation or intimidation works better than nonviolent strategies when dealing with others. • Be good at hiding negative behavior from
adults. • Accept aggression as justifiable. • Enjoy feelings of power and control. • Be unhappy at school and lack a sense of belonging there. • Be impulsive. • Have feelings of depression. • Have problems at home. • Blame others for their actions. It’s important to try to understand where the bullying behavior is coming from, but it’s even more important to address the issue directly with your son: • Make it clear that bullying is unacceptable. Establish clear rules and consequences for break-
ing those rules, and be consistent in your followthrough. Be sure to use non-violent, non-physical methods of discipline. • Be sure you’re modeling appropriate behavior in your own actions with your son and with others. Be assertive, not aggressive, and treat others with
kindness and respect. • Help your son find non-aggressive ways to interact with others. • Talk to your son about how it feels to be bullied, and help him build empathy for others. • Keep in close contact with your son’s teachers and the school counselor
to seek help in changing your son’s behavior. • Spend more time with your son and praise him when he acts appropriately. • If the bullying persists, seek professional counseling or an evaluation by a mental health professional.

by Barbara O’Neill, Ph.D., CFP®, Rutgers Cooperative Extension According to Webster’s Dictionary, debt is defined as “the state of owing.” Most commonly, the word debt is used in reference to money that is owed to various creditors as in the case of debt incurred through loans and credit cards. How do you know when you have taken on too much debt? Take the following quiz to determine whether you are using credit wisely or getting in over your head. Circle the following statements that apply to you and/or your family: • Your monthly consumer debt payments (do not include a mortgage or rent) are 20 percent or more of your monthly take-home pay • You buy things with credit cards that you would not buy if you had to pay cash for them • You charge day-today expenses, like gas and shampoo, instead of paying for them with cash • You are at or near the limit of your lines of credit (i.e., you are “maxed out”) • You pay only the min-
imum amount due on your credit card bills each month • You are chronically late in paying household bills and/or debt payments • You have had late fees assessed on debt payments • You frequently receive “past due” bill notices in the mail • You keep making new credit purchases so the amount that you owe does not decrease • You get new loans or credit cards to make payments on existing loans or credit cards • Your family has frequent arguments about money • You are dishonest with your spouse about your use of credit and/or shopping habits • You often have to skip payments on some bills in order to make payments on others (i.e., “bill juggling”) • You frequently borrow small amounts of money from family members or friends • You have had to ask a family member or friend to cosign a loan • You use savings to

pay bills that used to be paid with cash or a check • You hold more than 10 credit cards, including gasoline and department store cards • You owe money to more than seven creditors • You do not know the total of what you actually owe and are afraid to add it up • You have to borrow money to pay expected expenses such as insurance premiums and taxes • You have been turned down for a credit card or a loan within the last six months • You put off medical and dental visits because you can not afford them • You frequently get behind on utility payments and have had utilities threaten to shut off service • You have been threatened by creditors with legal action or repossession of your car • You would be in immediate financial distress if you were unable to work or lost your job • You frequently “bounce” checks or rely on the overdraft protection feature of your

checking account • You write post-dated checks and/or get cash advances from payday lending companies • You are experiencing an ever-widening gap between your income and
items (e.g., late payments, car repossession, collection actions, liens, and charged-off debts) • You have a negative net worth (i.e., your debts are greater than your assets)
household expenses • You think of credit more as a form of “cash” rather than a source of debt • You are an impulsive or compulsive spender (a.k.a., a “shopaholic”) • You have borrowed against life insurance with little chance of repayment • Your credit report lists one or more negative
• You worry about money and/or feel stress related to your personal finances If you circled five or more of the above statements, you are clearly exhibiting multiple warning signs of excessive debt. The more items that you checked, the more serious your debt problem probably is. Take the time to honestly evaluate
your cash flow patterns and use of credit and develop strategies to bring your spending into line with your income. Your situation is not hopeless, but it will take a commitment to correct the situation and get back on the road to financial security. What can you do to regain control of your finances and reduce debt? First, try to reduce your expenses (even further than you may already have) and investigate possible ways to increase or extend your income. For example, you may qualify for assistance from government or nonprofit agencies. Specific types of programs include food stamps, low-income energy assistance, and unemployment compensation. Also, contact your creditors to explain your financial difficulties. Do this, preferably, before you make a late payment and try to work out a realistic payment schedule. You may also want to contact a non-profit credit counseling agency for assistance. A credit counselor may be able to negotiate payment concessions from your creditors and can help you repay outstanding debt through monthly payments that are distributed among those you owe money to. Another helpful resource to get out of debt is a PowerPay (see www.powerpay.org), an online debt reduction program. PowerPay can help you accelerate debt repayment, thereby reducing both repayment time and interest charges.

by Susan Kelley Here’s another reason to keep a photo of a loved on your desk. After recalling an upsetting event, thinking about your mother or romantic partner can make you feel better and reduce your negative thinking, according to a new Cornell study. Perhaps most important, it also may result in fewer psychological and physical health problems at least a month afterward. “Our own memories can often be a significant source of stress. For example, thinking about a recent breakup or underperforming on an exam usually decreases positive mood and increases negative thinking,” said co-author Vivian Zayas, assistant
professor of psychology. “However, simply thinking about an attachment figure, whether it is one’s mother or partner, by either recalling a supportive interaction with them or just viewing their photograph, helps people restore their mood and decreases the tendency to engage in negative thinking.” The research is the first to explore the benefits of thinking about a loved one when a person experiences stress they generate themselves. Previous research has focused on the benefits when a person experiences externally generated stress, such as physical pain. “We’re showing the effectiveness of a new technique to cope with negative
memories,” said co-author Emre Selcuk, a Ph.D. candidate in the graduate field of human development. “As compared to prior work, it is a much less effortful, automatic and spontaneous strategy.” Past research has also focused on emotion regulation strategies that can be employed before encountering an upsetting event. “This approach is similar to wearing a raincoat to prevent oneself from getting wet,” Zayas said. “But, in everyday life, it is not always possible to pre-emptively deal with upsetting events. Our work shows that one way to regulate emotion after thinking about an upsetting event is by simply thinking about an attachment figure. It is akin to getting
caught in a thunder shower and using a towel to dry yourself off after you are already wet.” The paper appears online and in a forthcoming edition of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. To arrive at their conclusions, the authors designed a series of experiments in which they asked study participants to recall a negative memory and then think of a loved one. In the first experiment, participants were asked to think about a time when their mothers had been supportive. In the second, they looked at a photograph of their mothers, and in the third, they looked at a photograph of a romantic partner. In the control condition, partici-
pants were asked to think about an interaction with an acquaintance or look at a photograph of someone they didn’t know. After being reminded of their loved ones, people recovered faster and were less susceptible to negative thinking. At least one month after the experiment, those who benefited the most from being reminded of the loved ones reported fewer physical or psychological health problems. The research has implications for mental and physical health, the authors say, because an inability to cope with negative memories — that is, recalling them repeatedly — is a major predictor of psychological and physical health problems from depression and general
anxiety disorders to cardiovascular disease. And the technique is easy to integrate into daily life, Selcuk said. “If you’re moving to a new city, put a picture of your loved ones on the fridge. If you get a supportive text message from a loved one, just store it in your cell phone so you can retrieve it later.” The other authors are Cornell’s Gül Günaydin, a Ph.D. candidate in the field of psychology, and Cindy Hazan, associate professor of human development, and Ethan Kross, assistant processor of psychology at the University of Michigan. The research was supported by Cornell’s Institute for the Social Sciences and the President’s Council of Cornell Women.

(ARA) — For those considering buying a home, the current real estate market presents some unique opportunities. One of the side effects of the economic roller coaster ride of the past few years is that home prices have gone down and more homes have gone on the market. For buyers, that means more choices and better deals. However, those same tumultuous years also can also teach buyers a lesson: Make smart buying decisions and be wise with your finances. Impulsive buying is never a good idea when it comes to a purchase as significant as a home, but it was something of a trend at the height of the mid-2000s. Now, with banks lending far more cautiously, you need to be absolutely certain that
your finances are in order — and healthy — to be able to get the best deal on your purchase. There are a number of steps you can take to get ready to buy a home, and you might need to work on them simultaneously. Consider that you’ll need to start saving, if you haven’t already, but you’ll also need to review your credit score and do what you can to either maintain it or work toward healthier credit. Both of these tasks will help make the home-buying process better for you. Your credit is an important factor in determining the terms under which you can get a mortgage. Broadly speaking, the better your credit is, the more positively you’ll be viewed by lenders — and that can lead to better interest rates. And because you’ll be paying off your home for years to come,
it’s important to get the best rate possible. Start by checking your credit report. You’re entitled to one free check of your report, from TransUnion and other credit reporting agencies every year. As much as you need to check your report to find out what shape your credit is in, it’s also essential to review it for inaccuracies or fraudulent activity, both of which can have a negative impact on your score. If your credit health needs some work, start taking action immediately. Paying bills on time, reducing your overall debt and limiting new credit inquiries can all help to build your credit — but be patient as it can take time for your positive actions to take effect. Nevertheless, the sooner you make the effort, the sooner you’ll see results. Making a prudent deci-
sion about buying a house comes down to an honest assessment of what you can afford. Keep in mind that you might be approved for a loan that’s larger than what is practical for you to afford. While it may be tempting to buy a pricier house, the stress of struggling to make payments could diminish your enjoyment of your new home and even put you at financial risk. One rule of thumb is that most borrowers can afford a home loan that runs about two and a half times their annual salary. Buying a home is a complex process, but one that is ultimately very rewarding when done right. By organizing your finances well in advance, you’ll help set yourself up for success.
