Pumpkin carving tips • When cutting out the top, place the knife at a 45 degree angle so the the lid will have a place to rest when you replace it. If you cut straight down, the lid will fall through. • A small battery-operated flameless candle is a safer choice than traditional candles for lighting your jack-o'-lantern. • If using a candle, sprinkle the bottom side of the pumpkin lid with ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and/or cloves to let your jack-o'-lantern do double duty as an air freshener. • For longer life, soak the cleaned pumpkin a couple of hours in a bleach water solution of 1 teaspoon bleach to 1 gallon of water. Dry thoroughly, then rub inside and out, including all cut edges, with vegetable oil or petroleum jelly to prevent shriveling. If the pumpkin begins to shrivel, repeat the process. The soaking time will depend upon how dried out the pumpkin has become.
• When cleaning the pumpkin, save the seeds. Toasted pumpkin seeds make a healthy, tasty snack. Use a large, heavy metal serving spoon or ice cream scoop to scrape the insides. If you will Reader ads 518-673-3011 or 800-218-5586 be lighting the pumpkin, the back wall should be scraped as smooth as possible since this is where the light will be reflected. A 1-inch thickness of the Bruce Button-Corporate Sales Manager pumpkin wall is optimum. 518-673-3011, bbutton@leepub.com Accounting/Billing-Alyce Moyer The Original Valley Pennysaver is 518-673-0149, amoyer@leepub.com delivered to 100 percent of the Commercial Printing-Beth Snyder homes in the following towns: 518-673-0101, bsnyder@leepub.com Ames Marshville Delivery concerns-Tony Keba Brooksman Corners Nelliston 518-673-3011, pennysaver@leepub.com Buel Oppenheim Send all correspondence to: Canajoharie Palatine Bridge PO Box 121, Palatine Bridge, NY 13428 Ephratah Randall Fort Plain Advertising e-mail: jsnyder@leepub.com Salt Springville Freysbush Editorial e-mail: jkarkwren@leepub.com Sprakers Hallsville Web site: www.vpennysaver.com Sprout Brook Hessville 518-673-3011 Phone • 518-673-2381 Fax St. Johnsville Lasselville Starkville We cannot GUARANTEE the return of photographs. October 13, 2012 Hello Again, Life is like a square dance. With every do-si-do we meet or leave a friend. While returning from enjoying lunch with two friends at the Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown, my wife and I were feeling like the weather, a little gloomy. We enjoyed a delightful lunch which ended with hugs and handshakes as we were saying, “So long for now.” Our feeling could be expressed in words by the famous song, “So long, it’s been good to know you,” while absolutely believing we would see them again someday. It’s both strange and yet wonderful how God brings friends into a person’s life – for a time – then like changing seasons, causes life with its friends to change. Similar to seasonal change, friendships last forever. Friends will forever be in our hearts and minds. As we drove north out of the village along Glimmerglass Lake, our feelings were brightened by the beautiful fall colors. A swirling breeze was chasing the leaves across the fields and a gray squirrel with his furry tail standing as a mast scrambled across the road. It could be wondered, “Why did he cross the road?” Possibly like the hen – “Just to get to the other side.” While writing this “Hello Again” I am sitting in our motor home next to the Mohawk River. A stiff breeze is filling the air with a quilt-like pattern of colorful leaves. I would like to suggest to the Lord that he slow down the breeze as I’m not in a hurry to see the fall colors disappear. On the other hand, do you think he needs my opinion? – Probably not. Remember – a couple of weeks ago we were chatting about pondering. Sometimes I enjoy wandering off by myself for a quiet time of pondering. I cannot remember ever solving any national problems but one day I did wonder about George Washington, who is thought to be the father of this country, is he not? If he practiced same-sex marriage, what would he be called? “A man without a country?” Every year we enjoy hearing the honking of Canadian geese flying over our valleys. Usually they form a large “V” but on occasion form a straight line. I wonder why – or what – is the difference. So far this year, no geese, and again I wonder why. If they have changed their flyway, that will be our loss. Fall to most is Indian corn, colorful gourds, corn harvesting, potato digging, apple picking, drinking sweet cider, church dinners, turnips, pumpkins, and Jack-O-Lanterns, while looking forward to the Great American tradition of Thanksgiving. Wouldn’t it be great if we could invite an American Indian family to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with our family? Our kids would talk about it forever. What a memory. Possibly topped off with a musket shoot.

Tidbits to Ponder: • One night the bank janitor answered the phone and said, “Hello?” The caller said, “Please tell me what the Federal Reserve discount rate is, the rate of prime paper, and what the interest of government bonds is?” “Mister,” said the janitor, “when I said ‘Hello’ I was telling you all I know about the banking business.” • It appears that our president is advocating bigger government paid for by higher taxes. Does that mean that through higher government spending which demands higher taxes, we will all be equally broke? Then we can attempt to borrow from each other. • The pastor was asked to cut the morning services to less than an hour. During his next sermon, he said, “I was thinking about the request to make cuts while I was shaving and I cut my face.” An older deacon suggested he pay more attention to his face and cut his sermon. • A soul winner asked, “Wouldn’t you like to spend eternity in heaven with the saints?” “I sure would,” was the quick reply, “but sometimes it is difficult to live with them here on earth.” One hundred and seventeen weeks ago the Original Valley Pennysaver carried the first, “Hello Again.” Since then we have chatted – around the chunk stove – in Charlie Hearn’s store sharing a handsome portion of Irish blarney – funny stories, and jokes. World, United States, and New York State problems have been hashed over and you and I are still here. The world has kept on turning and we haven’t fallen off yet. Sometimes it is easier to sit back while watching the parade of life go by, choosing not to get involved. However, we have all been given a great gift of thought. As part of God’s creation, should we not talk with him while attempting to live, learn from teaching as presented in his words in the Bible? As citizens of this country, the great United States, do we not owe it to our families, friends, and future generations to study, learn and understand about what and where and how Messrs Obama and Romney intend to lead this country and, without fail, vote this November? Soon the little red Can Am Spyder will be in storage for the winter months – we will miss seeing you and wonder how the winter season is treating you. As the old parson said, “If you travel this life with God and his written word, the Holy Bible, you need no other road map.” Fred Lee and the Lee Family Special Message to our Gentlemen Readers: The fastest way to a woman’s heart is through the front door of a good restaurant.

As Common As Stones Sunday, October 21st at 3:00PM Do you feel like something is wrong in America? Do you feel like something is wrong in America? Do you see how things have changed in the last 10, 20 or 30 years? Would you be shocked to know that the path our nation walks has been walked by nations before us with predictable and devastating results? Financial advisor, speaker and former pastor Dann West presents AS COMMON AS STONES, his fascinating observations of the parallels between the United States of America and kingdom of Israel under King Solomon. Remarkably similar events between these two nations indicate where our nation is headed, both economically and morally, and how that will affect you in the near future. Find out what the Bible says about where nations that “make silver as common stones” find themselves and how you as a citizen can protect yourself, inform yourself and make a difference.

Dollars and sense by David Uffington How to avoid buying defective products When it comes to your family’s safety, it’s important to try and investigate products you plan to buy. For example, 12 models of a popular coffee maker have been recalled after more than 60 reports of the water heating chamber releasing hot water and grounds — causing burn injuries to hands, faces and torsos. These models were sold over the past two years, and therefore might have made it to the discount-store level as newer models came on the market. Two million baby bath seats have been recalled due to sudden collapse that spills the baby out of the seat. Reported injuries so far include skull fractures and bleeding on the brain as a result of the falls. The manufacturer has offered a free repair kit that will lock the seat in position. Twenty-one thousand gas dryers have been recalled because the gas valve doesn’t shut off, which causes the temperatures to rise even after the dry cycle is finished. Go the Consumer Product Safety Commission (www. cpsc.gov) for the latest recall information and to report unsafe products. The most recent recall information is on the front page. Or call its toll-free consumer
hotline: 800-6382772. If there’s a malfunction with an item, report it. Only after a number of people report malfunctions and injuries from consumer products will recalls be issued. Never assume you’re the only one with a problem. Be sure to report your safety problem to the manufacturer as well. Many of them will do a voluntary recall to catch the problem quickly, before it shows up at the Consumer Product Safety Commission level. If your gift buying for the coming holiday season includes making purchases at discount stores, consider that the models available there might not be current. It’s important to check for recalls on any models of appliances before you buy them. Search for product information at saferproducts.gov. Purchasing an online subscription to Consumer Reports magazine is well worth the small cost. You get even more information than the print edition alone. Online, by signing in with your ID and password, you can access comments made by other consumers and expanded information on the products you want to buy. Additionally, you can sign up to receive monthly e-mail information about product safety and recalls. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Whatchamacallits These hose bands are from Fort Plain’s own entrepeneur, William Yerdon. Patented in 1890, these were known as Yerdon’s Double Improved Hose Bands. Yerdon invented them at the age of 42, after working as a clerk at Clark & Woods store (also in Fort Plain), and managing the local bridge and bus line, which at that time would have consisted of open motorcars. Yerdon opened the manufacturing plant for his hose bands in Fort Plain and, though the business no longer exists, the building still stands. In 1914, the company employed 75 people. Yerdon’s bands varied in size, from the tiny circles pictured here up to four feet in diameter!
This tool is from the collection of Willis “Skip” Barshied.
In the patent, Yerdon claimed that “A couplingband thus constructed will fit snugly on the hose without pinching, rumpling, or breaking it, and will withstand uninjured any strain to which it is likely to be subjected. The tongue-and-groove joint is nearly or quite as strong as any other part.” Perhaps this strength

contributed to the product’s great success. These hose bands, while used in the traditional sense of cinching and tightening hoses, also contributed to making and repairing automobiles and were distributed to railroads and large hose manufacturers nationally.

Collecting by Larry Cox Hot chocolate set Q: Roughly 50 years ago, I was given a hot chocolate set with six cups and saucers, and pot. It has a flower design and was made in Germany. How can I determine its value? — Caroline, Edgewater, FL A: You need to hire the services of a professional appraiser. There are two types of appraisals, verbal and written. The verbal is less expensive; the written is usually for insurance purposes. Some appraisers also provide a “ball park”

estimate. That can sometimes be a free service, but not always. Contact appraisers in your area and inquire. Incidentally, be aware that what your chocolate set is worth in Florida might be quite different than its value in some other part of the country. Q: I have an old tennis racket in good condition. Please advise me as to its probable value. — Bob, Palm Coast, FL A: Randy Crow is a dealer who specializes in older sports equipment and might be able to help you. Contact him c/o Sporting Antiques, 20269 N. 86th St., Scottsdale, AZ 85255; and sportcrow@ aol.com. Simply type in the name of the book and the author, and scroll until you find the right edition. I did just that and found both of your books listed for less than $10 each. Mobile Re-employment Response Team brings assistance to the Mohawk Valley
by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Statistics show that as of Oct. 1 unemployment in areas of the Mohawk Valley was over 10 percent. According to Regional Economist Mark Barbano, of the NYS Dept of Labor, unemployment in Montgomery County alone is 10.3 percent, falling just behind Fulton Co, which has a 10.6 percent rate of unemployment. Barbano was with the Mobile Re-employment Response team at the Minden Town Hall in Fort Plain, where the team offered re-employment services; matching skills to job openings, reviewing and tweaking resumes, supplying interviewing tips and helping clients to set up ‘Linked In’ accounts online. NYS Manager of Business Resources Steve Ryan travels throughout NYS setting up and coordinating the Mobile Units. “We’re coming to the people,” Ryan stated. “Many times people don’t have transportation to come to us.” Ryan said the mobile units supply quality services to the unemployed and work with them “one on one” providing them with the best opportunities possible. Bob Motyl of Amsterdam attended the Minden Town Hall session taking advantage of the Mobile Unit’s resources. Motyl said he had been out of work for about 18 months. “I did go back to school for electronic technol-

Fulton Co 3rd annual Day on the Farm defies dismal weather
by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Eleven-year-old Jennifer Keehan of Country Pals 4-H, Glen, NY, covered her Brown Swiss heifers with blankets to keep them a little drier and warmer, as the cold, weepy weather saturated Fulton County’s 3rd annual Day on the Farm hosted by Rogers’ Family Orchards. The dismal weather did not keep folks from attending the event. “It amazes me, the number of people that are turning out on such a wet, rainy day!” said Sam Rogers, as she watched numerous families standing in line to receive Stewart’s ice cream cones that were being given away. Fulton Co. Farm Bureau Treasurer, Kevin Putman and Fulton Co. Soil & Water Conservation Director, John Persch, both coordinators of Fulton County’s annual Day on the Farm, discussed the effect the weather was having on the event. “There are a lot more people than I expected, given the weather,” Putman said. “My son is out there getting covered with mud,” commented Persch with a good-natured smile. The petting zoo, usually a hit with children and adults, wasn’t quite as lively as usual, with donkeys, goats, cattle and poultry drenched and looking fairly miserable. Most attendees crowded closer to the buildings where they could escape some of the weather and where enticing aromas of baked goods, maple syrup confections and other hot food filled the air. Fulton Co. Farm Bureau Secretary, Ken England, had a display set up for Mohawk Valley Nursery, which he owns. “I was impressed with the number of people who showed up in such bad weather!” England said, adding that the animal exhibits, free ice cream and hay piles to climb on are always a “magnet” for the kids. Many hardy souls, dodging raindrops, some wearing rain gear and others carrying umbrellas, ventured out to visit the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Central New York’s
Umbrellas and all, the horse-drawn wagon rides still attracted folks for rides — even on a wet seat! Photos by Elizabeth A.Tomlin display, which was under a canopy. Other folks crowded into Palatine Valley Dairy’s display, where 16-year-old Hannah Bowerman of Palatine Bridge handed out samples of Palatine Cheese throughout the afternoon. Horse and wagon rides provided by Tamara Healy’s Classic Carriage Service and Fritz Ann Farms, continued to draw people — despite the unrelenting rain. Sandy and Pete Goderie of Goderie’s Tree Farm were on hand to demonstrate how to press fresh apple cider and children attending the event were only too happy to try their hand at the task. “We want this event to reflect agricultural in Fulton County,” Rogers stated. “It’s a family oriented function. Some of the kids who come here have never seen a calf or an alpaca up close before and this gives them an opportunity to do all of that. It’s all about the kids.”
Fulton County’s 3rd annual Day on the Farm event was coordinated by (from left) 'Day on the Farm’ hosts, Rogers’ Family Orchard owners Todd & Sam Rogers; Fulton Co. Farm Bureau Treasurer, Kevin Putman and Fulton Co. Soil & Water Conservation Director, John Persch.

Tasteful ways to make your kitchen last (NAPSA) — According to U.S. Census Bureau reports, Americans are not moving from one home to another nearly as much as they used to. For many, that means it’s important to make sure the home they’re in-and particularly the kitchen-is built to last. Fortunately, there are a
number of ways to do that. For example: • When you get down to it, a porcelain floor may sound fragile, but because these floor tiles are fired at an extremely high temperature, they’re remarkably durable, lasting for decades and impervious to water, foot traffic and other things that can floor a floor.
• Take your counters for granite. These not only look good, they’re resistant to heat and stains, very low maintenance and last for a very long time. • Consider laminate for your cabinets. by Samantha Mazzotta Painting tips Q: I’m painting my apartment next week, the first time I’ve ever done this. Do you have any painting tips? — Lana, Columbus, GA A: Tons of tips, but limited space to list them all, unfortunately! First-timers often are daunted by the amount of paint and paint products to choose from, conflicting instructions from various sources, and sometimes a lack of
helpful information from home-improvement store paint sections. Others feel it’s simple enough to just buy a bunch of paint and brushes and just go for it. The reality falls somewhere in between. Preparation is the most important rule to follow, however. You’ll want to prepare the walls (and presumably trim) in the apartment for painting. You’ll need to figure out not just what color paint to use,

but how much of it to buy, and if the colors even work the way you think they will. Here are a few tips to get you started: • Buy sample sizes of paint colors you’re interested in, and paint a stripe of each in an inconspicuous section of the wall. Paint looks different when wet and when dry. • How much paint should you buy? A gallon of latex paint covers 350 square feet. Measure the length of each wall and add the figures together. Measure the height of the room from floor to ceiling. Multiply the first number by the height of the room and you’ll have your square footage. • Wash all surfaces to be painted with a damp sponge soaked in a soap and water solution and then squeezed to remove most of the water. Let the surfaces dry for about a half-day, longer if it’s rainy or humid. • Remove protruding nails and patch nail
holes and small (less than 1/2 inch) dents and holes with spackling compound. Once it’s dry, sand the compound lightly and wipe with a damp sponge to remove dust. • Mask off areas you don’t want to paint using blue painter’s tape, which comes off more easily than masking tape. • Covering a dark wall with a lighter paint? Prime the wall first with a primer that is close to or matches the color of the new paint. • Ditto for covering one type of paint, such as an oil-based paint, with a different type, such as latex paint. A primer coat will keep your new paint from bubbling, cracking or peeling. • Make sure the area being painted is well ventilated; additionally, wear a filter mask (not a dust mask) to reduce inhalation of paint fumes. feel of the room beyond its boundaries. 3. Get double-duty furniture: tables and ottomans with hidden storage space. Clean spaces look bigger, so keep clutter out of sight. 4. Store smart and stay organized. Shelving units maximize wall space for storage; add baskets on the bottom shelves for extra capacity. Fill clear containers with seasonal clothing and items and slide them under couches and beds. 5. Convert a closet into a home office by adding a desk and shelves. Hang organizers on the back of the door for extra storage. Close the door and the computer and paperwork are out of sight, instantly opening up the room. Preventing electrical fires (NAPSA) — Electrical failures and malfunctions are a leading cause of house fires year after year — but you can stay safe at home. Many electrical fires can be prevented simply by understanding basic electrical safety principles and following safe practices. Keep home fires from burning To help you protect your home and family from electrical fires, the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) offers these tips: • Safety should always be the top priority when working with electricity. ESFI recommends that a qualified, licensed electrician perform all home electrical work in compliance with local and national safety standards. • Consider having your circuit breakers replaced with arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs), which provide enhanced electrical fire protection by detecting dangerous arcing conditions. • Make sure all electrical panel circuits are properly labeled. Always replace fuses or circuit
breakers with the correct size and amperage. • Keep the area around the electrical panel clear so you can easily shut off power in an emergency. • Every month, use the TEST button to check that ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) and AFCIs are working properly. • Look for warning signs of an electrical problem, such as outlets and switches that are warm or make crackling, sizzling or buzzing noises. • Regularly check cords, outlets, switches, and appliances for signs of damage. Do not use damaged electrical devices. • Do not use extension cords on a permanent basis and never use them with space heaters or air conditioners. • Avoid overloading outlets. • Do not use lightbulbs that exceed the recommended wattage of the light fixture or lamp. What to do in case of fire Despite your best prevention efforts, a fire could still happen. Follow

How to be a food safety geek by Deb Maes, Extension Field Specialist The word geek originally referred to a computer expert. Today, almost anyone can be a geek about something. I refer to myself as a food safety geek. I follow food-borne illness outbreaks and food recalls. I read barfblog.com on a regular basis to understand the science as well as the mistakes in handling food and how it is reported. And, I use a food thermometer when I am cooking meals. Why did I become so interested in food safety? As a new Extension Educator I listened to women talk about some of the food practices of their elderly parents. People left food cooling on the counter for hours. The kitchen sink was used to thaw foods. No one knew the temperature of their fridge, and didn’t even have a thermometer to check temps. Meat was considered done if the juices ran clear. With those things in mind, I started teaching the basics of food safety. They boiled down to “Keep Hot Food Hot, Keep Colds
Foods Cold, Keep Everything Clean, and When in Doubt, Throw it Out!” Advice that’s still good today. Another part of my job expected me to understand the science and process of home food preservation so that I could answer consumer questions. To say that it was “on the job training” would be an understatement. I can now field food preservations questions, answer consumer questions about safe food handling and for more than a decade I’ve taught food safety classes for food service providers. The cornerstone of my food safety education efforts is the ServSafe® course. This program using the latest science and research around safe food handling was developed by the Education Foundation of the National Restaurant Association and is recognized as an excellent training opportunity for food service staff and managers. Participants are expected to know among other things: the minimum temperature for cooking pork; what is the Temper-
ature Danger Zone for food and how long food can stay in that range; how to clean and sanitize food contact surfaces; when an employee should be restricted or excluded from an operation and what temperature eggs should be at when delivered. After an intensive oneday class, successful completion of a 90 question multiple choice exam will give the participant a five-year food safety certificate. Since June of 2000 I’ve taught over 90 classes and reached more than 1100 people. Almost 90 percent of those taking the test have passed. I like to think that I’ve done my part to see that food is safely prepared and served in many parts of New Hampshire. As a customer, how do you know if the restaurants you frequent have staff that know and apply food safety principles? For starters, ask them if someone is ServSafe® certified. Many places hang their certificates so that customers can see them. Watch the staff. Do they wash their hands regularly? Many restau-

rants are set up so that you can see this happening. The same applies to whether you purchase food at a “Mom and Pop” store, have sandwiches made to order or purchase meat slices at the deli counter of your favorite grocery store. Are the restrooms clean? How about the table you sit down at? Is the fork you pick up covered with dried food? Are the staff aprons clean? Is food safety a priority at your favorite establishment? Encourage owners and managers to make sure that food safety is as important to them as it is to you. Almost 48,000,000 people in the United States get sick from food each year. About 125,000 people are hospitalized due to complications from food-borne illnesses. And of those, three thousand people die from food-borne illness. We have a safe food supply, and with the right knowledge about food safety restaurants and con-
sumers can make it even safer. As a consumer, do everything you can to make sure that the food your purchase, bring home, store and prepare is safe for you and your family. Check out the befoodsafe.org website to learn how the four easy lessons of “Clean, Separate, Cook and Chill” can help you prevent harmful bacterial from making your family sick. Buy a thermometer and use it to check the temperatures of your fridge and freezer. Check the temperatures of the food you cook to make sure it is cooked enough to be safe. When purchasing homemade food, look for labels and handling directions. Bring leftovers home and put them in the fridge, right away. There is no guarantee that you won’t be sick from the food you eat, but learn how to control what you can. There’s no harm in being a food safety geek like me.
So, to answer some basic food safety questions: Pork should be cooked to a minimum temperature of 145°F — and yes it may be pink. Your fridge should be at 40°F and your freezer should be at 0°F. For consumers, food should stay no longer than two hours at room temperature, then it should be put in the fridge — and don’t worry, your fridge can handle hot foods. Eggs should be stored in the fridge, in the carton they come in. It is not necessary to wash your raw chicken, you might be spreading more bacteria than you are rinsing away. All home canned foods must be processed either in a water bath canner or pressure canner before being stored. A teaspoon of bleach in a quart of water makes a great sanitizer for counters and sinks. Just spray on and let it sit for at least 10 seconds. Better yet, let it dry naturally.
Learn the symptoms of depression to determine if you’re more than just stressed by Curtis Talley Jr., Michigan State University Extension Stress is a part of life, but major unexpected events, such as the loss of an entire year’s crop income due to a weather disaster can significantly increase stress. Sometimes, a very stressful event, or continuation of stressful events can cause physiological changes in the body. You can start feeling intense sadness including feelings of helplessness, hopelessness and worthlessness. Everything, even the most minor thing can seem like a huge burden. This can last for days to weeks and longer and keep you from functioning normally. According to the Stress, Anxiety and Resource Center, a series of questions about the symptoms and emotions you’re experiencing indicates if you are suffering depression. 1. Do you feel sad, unhappy, and hopeless or otherwise “down in the dumps”? 2. Do you feel very tired with little energy? 3. Are you unable to concentrate? 4. Do you feel moody, uneasy, restless or irritable? 5. Do you have trouble falling asleep and/or staying asleep through the night? 6. Have your eating patterns drastically changed? 7. Are you unable to enjoy life and your daily activities? 8. Have you lost interest in sex or are you experiencing sexual difficulties? 9. Have you lost interest in things or activities that used to mean a lot to you? 10. Do you have difficulty focusing and making decisions? 11. Do you feel inadequate or like a failure? 12. Do you feel guilty or put yourself down for no apparent reason? 13. Do you feel hopeless or like things always go wrong for you no matter what you do or how hard you try? 14. Do you feel empty inside, like you are not really alive? 15. Do you feel confined or imprisoned? 16. Have you entertained thoughts of suicide? Depression affects your life and the lives of those around you. It can severely disrupt how you function, eat, sleep and get along with others. Depression can accompany the need to make very important business or personal decisions. The last thing someone needs when undergoing stress is to also have depression interfering with these decisions. According to the Stress, Anxiety and Resource Center, if you have at least five of these symptoms you are encouraged to consult your medical doctor. Depression is a treatable medical condition. If you have ever suffered from depression and been successfully treated with one of the many medications available, you know that you can get better again. Five basic steps to making a house your home (ARA) — Owning a home remains a key element of the American Dream. In fact, a recent survey by TD Bank revealed that 84 percent of young renters (ages 18 to 34) intend to buy a home in the future. While it is exciting, home buying can be overwhelming and complicated if you don’t have a general knowledge of the process. Equipping yourself with the right tools will allow you to navigate the complexities of the homebuying process. Here are five helpful steps to follow on your way to homeownership. Step 1: Learn the home-buying ABCs: Build your homeownership knowledge by participating in a first-time homebuyer class at a local non-profit agency in your community to answer any questions you may have. Staying wellinformed will help you feel confident and in control of this major financial decision and nip any initial questions in the bud. Step 2: Get out your calculator: Owning a home requires a large in-
vestment of time, energy and money, so make sure you are careful when making the decision to buy. If you’re like 43 per-

With the variety of mortgage products that exists today, it’s essential you choose the right one for your needs. How long do you plan on living in this house? Do you plan on making improvements to the home? Answering these types of questions will help you hone in on your financial strategy. Finding the right mortgage is about more than a rate and terms — it’s about finding the right financial partner. Don’t get led down the wrong path by choosing a bank that doesn’t provide flexible options. Look for a bank that offers a hassle-free mortgage guarantee to ensure your first home purchase is as smooth and worry-free as possible. Step 5: Sign on the dotted line: Once your home has been inspected, your contingencies have been met and your mortgage has been approved, it’s time to close the deal. In most cases, a closing officer and your attorney will be present during closing. As the buyer, you should make sure to bring a binder for homeowner’s insurance (document proving you have adequate homeowner’s insurance), a paid receipt for the first year’s premium and a certified or cashier’s check for your down payment and closing costs. Before the closing begins, review your mortgage, mortgage note and settlement statement documents to ensure there are no errors or red flags. Remember to ask questions during the closing, as the closing officer is there to help. After you’ve signed all documents and paid your closing costs and down payment, the closing is finished. Congratulations and enjoy your new home. To get more information and to download your free TD Bank FirstTime Homebuyers’ Kit, t v i s i esecure.tdbank.com/net /firsttimehomebuyers/de fault.aspx. The risk factors for breast cancer Breast cancer affects hundreds of thousands of families each year. A potentially deadly disease, breast cancer is associated with several risk factors. Some of those risk factors, including gender and age, are beyond an individual’s control, while other risk factors are associated with certain lifestyle choices. But even if a woman has the risk factors for breast cancer, that does not mean she will get the disease. In fact, a woman can have several of the following risk factors and never get breast cancer, while other women can have just one of the risk factors and still get a breast cancer diagnosis. Risk factors beyond your control * Gender: Women are far more likely to develop breast cancer than men. The American Cancer says breast cancer is roughly 100 times more common among women than men. That’s likely because men produce far less estrogen and progesterone, female hormones that can promote the growth of breast cancer cells. * Age: An individual’s risk for breast cancer increases as he or she ages. Roughly two-thirds of all invasive breast cancer cases are found in women over the age of 55, while just 13 percent of such cases are found in women younger than 45. * Genetics: The ACS notes that roughly 5 to 10 percent of all breast cancer cases are believed to be hereditary. These cases result from mutations, or defects in a gene, inherited from a parent. In many cases a person will inherit a mutation in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which will normally prevent cancer by making proteins that keep the cells from growing abnormally. However, when these genes mutate, the risk for developing breast cancer is significant, as high as 80 percent for someone who has inherited mutated BRCA genes. * Family history: Women with a blood relative who has had breast cancer are also at greater risk of developing the disease. If a first-degree relative, which includes a mother, sister or daughter, has had breast cancer, a woman’s risk roughly doubles. Having two such relatives who have had breast cancer triples a woman’s risk. * Race and ethnicity: White women are slightly more likely to develop breast cancer than African-American women. However, African-American women are more likely to die from the disease. Asian, Hispanic and Native American women have a lower risk of developing and dying from breast cancer. * Dense breast tissue: Women with dense breast tissue, which is noticeable on a mammogram, have a higher risk of breast cancer. But dense breast tissue can make it harder for physicians to detect potential problems on a mammogram. * Menstrual cycles: Women who began menstruating prior to age 12 and/or went through menopause after age 55 have a slightly higher risk of breast cancer. Researchers believe this is because these women had a longer lifetime exposure to estrogen and progesterone. Risk factors you can control * Having children: Women who have never given birth or who gave birth for the first time after the age of 30 have a higher risk of developing breast cancer. Pregnancy reduces the total number of menstrual cycles a woman will have over her lifetime, which some feel is the reason that becoming pregnant can reduce a woman’s risk. * Oral contraceptive use: Women who have used oral contraceptives, often referred to as birth control pills, have a higher risk of breast cancer than women who have never used them. But that risk returns to normal when a woman stops taking birth control. * Breastfeeding: Some research has linked breastfeeding with a slightly lower risk of developing breast cancer, especially among women who breastfeed for 11/2 to 2 years. However, breastfeeding for such a lengthy period is relatively uncommon, which has made the potential link between breastfeeding and a lower risk of breast cancer difficult to determine. * Alcohol consumption: The ACS notes there is a clear connection between alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. The more alcohol a woman consumes, the greater her risk for developing breast cancer. Women who consume two to five alcoholic beverages daily have roughly 11/2 times the risk of breast cancer as women who do not consume alcohol. * Overweight and obesity: Women, especially those who are post-menopausal, who are overweight or obese have a greater risk of developing breast cancer. After menopause, most of a woman’s estrogen comes from fat tissue, and a woman with more fat tissue will likely have higher estrogen levels, increasing her risk of breast cancer. Blood insulin levels also tend to be higher in overweight or obese individuals, and elevated blood insulin levels have been linked to some cancers, including breast cancer. * Physical activity: More and more evidence is piling up to suggest that exercise can reduce breast cancer risk. Studies vary as to how much exercise is necessary to reduce the risk, but the benefits of exercise are so numerous as to encourage women to be more physically active regardless of how much they may reduce their risk of developing breast cancer.

Stop children from starting a fire, before it starts: • Keep matches and lighters in a locked drawer or cabinet out of the reach of children. This should be a location where a child is least likely to explore. • Teach your children to tell you when they find matches and lighters. • Check under beds and in closets for burnt matches or other clues your child is playing with fire. Be prepared for a fire: • One of the best ways to protect yourself and your family is to have a working smoke alarm
that can sound fast for both a fire that has flames, and a smoky fire that has fumes without flames. It is called a “Dual Sensor Smoke Alarm.” A smoke alarm greatly reduces your chances of dying in a fire. • Let children know what a smoke alarm sounds like and what to do when they hear it. • Always dress children in pajamas that meet federal flammability standards, which means if the pajamas are exposed to a small open flame, the flame will go out. Avoid dressing children for sleep in loose-fitting, 100 percent cotton clothes,
such as oversized T shirts. • Teach children not to hide from firefighters, but to get out of the house quickly and call for help from somewhere else. • Show children how to crawl low on the floor, below the smoke, to get out of the house. • Show them how to stop, drop to the ground, and roll if their clothes catch fire. • Make and practice a home fire escape plan and set a meeting place outside. Make sure everyone in your family knows at least two (2) escape routes from their bedrooms. To learn more on how
you can prevent fires and fire deaths, please contact
your local fire department’s office phone num-
ber (not 911) or visit www.usfa.fema.gov.
Family Fundamentals: It may be hard to tell if child is being bullied Q: How can you tell if your child is being bullied at school? A: It’s not easy. Much of what’s written on school bullying is clear on that point: Parents are often the last to know. Experts say bullying can start early, occurring even in preschool. It tends to increase through the elementary school years, peaking in middle school, then waning during high school. Some of the signs you can watch out for that might indicate your child is being bullied include: • Suddenly doesn’t want to go to school or loses interest in after-school activities. • Grades begin to drop. • Seems isolated or begins acting withdrawn or nervous. • Returns from school with clothes torn or books and other items damaged. • Has unexplained bumps, bruises or other marks. • Has increased complaints of headaches or stomachaches, or has trouble sleeping. • Threatens to hurt self or others. • Begins bullying other children. Bullying isn’t always physical. Psychological or emotional bullying often involves teasing, name-calling, intimidation, and isolating or shunning a child from others. Cyberbullying involves spreading hurtful messages on social network sites or through e-mail, instant messaging or through other electronic means. If you suspect your child is being bullied, it’s not easy to know what to do. First, children often don’t admit to being bullied, even when asked. They may feel embarrassed or simply want to avoid a conversation about something so painful. Or they might believe no one can do anything about it anyway. But there are things parents can do to help. First, take any complaint of bullying seriously. Don’t downplay it, and don’t blame your child for being victimized. Don’t advise your child to strike back. That’s a common mistake parents make, but such aggression can quickly escalate. You don’t know what the other child may be capable of. On the other hand, advising your child to “just tell
them to stop” isn’t helpful, either. Bullies don’t just fade away. Instead, teach your child to be assertive and stand up for him or herself — but just once. Sometimes displaying self-confidence is enough. But often, bullies might become more aggressive, feeding on the response. Help your child find ways to avoid the bully whenever possible. It’s not an ideal solution, but avoiding the bully can help children avoid bullying, at least in the short-term.
Make sure your child knows it’s okay to ask for help. The bullying should be reported to teachers, a guidance counselor or another responsible adult. Also, encourage friendships and the social skills needed to maintain them. Bullies often target children who are isolated. And, find ways to help your child develop self-confidence, and practice how to show it in conversation and body language. More resources are available through the Cooperative Extension System at www.extension.org - search for “bullying.”
Chow Line: Understanding HDLs can be complex I have always been proud of my high HDL level, but I heard recently that it might not be very important in terms of heart disease after all. What happened? Well, not so fast. You probably heard about a study that the medical journal The Lancet published online in May 2012. It received a lot of publicity because its findings were rather startling: After years of advising people to do what they can to raise their levels of HDLs — high-density lipoproteins, or what we’ve called the “good” cholesterol — researchers found that the 15 HDL-raising genetic variants they tested are not, in fact, linked to a reduced risk of heart attack.
However (and this is important): The scientists also emphasized that low HDL levels remain a good predictor, or what they call a “biomarker,” that a person has a higher risk of heart disease. This study revealed that low HDL levels themselves aren’t actually the bad guys — it appears that they’re just somehow associated with some asyet-undetermined factor that increases the risk of heart disease. So, for people who have a low HDL level, increasing it — by changing the diet or taking supplements, for example — won’t lower the risk of heart disease in and of itself. Raising a low HDL level simply won’t change the underlying factors that signal an increased
risk. At the same time, eating a healthy, balanced diet has many benefits. If it increases your HDLs at the same time, there’s certainly no harm in that. It’s also important to realize that this finding does not affect recommendations regarding LDLs, or low-density lipoproteins. And, while genetic factors play a strong role in determining LDL levels, there’s a lot you can do to keep them as low as possible, including avoiding trans fats; keeping saturated fats low (less than 7 percent of your total calories); limiting total fat to 25 to 35 percent of total calories; keeping cholesterol intake to less than 200 milligrams a day; consuming 2 grams of
plant stanols or sterols a day; increasing soluble fiber to 10 to 25 grams a day; and maintaining a healthy weight. In addition, get at least 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise most days of the week, if not every day. And, when necessary, take prescribed medication, such as statins, to lower LDLs. For more information, the National Institutes of Health offers a free, comprehensive, easy-to-read guide to “Lowering Your Cholesterol with TLC: Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes.” To download a copy, go to http://bit.ly/chol_TLC.
