Dental Hygiene Month October is Dental Hygiene Month and the theme this year is “Keep them healthy, Keep them clean.” “The theme is new this year, but the idea is not. Everyone wants healthy teeth and a beautiful smile - but maintaining a heathy smile means more than just cosmetic appearance - it’s important to realize the crucial role oral health plays in one’s overall health,” said Christina Cain, RN of Herkimer County Public Health. Oral hygiene can affect more than just your smile. Routine dental care, combined with dental check-ups, can save your smile, your teeth and even your life. Numerous studies have shown a link between gum disease (periodontal disease) and heart disease. Studies have also shown expectant women with periodontal disease are up to seven times more likely to have premature, lowbirth-weight babies. People with severe dental problems cannot chew or digest food properly, which can lead to poor nutrition. Brushing your teeth for two minutes at least twice a day remains a critical component to maintaining a healthy smile. Studies have shown that brushing for two minutes is perhaps the single most important step an individual can take to reduce plaque buildup and the risk of plaque-associated diseases, such as cavities and gingivitis. Proper flossing or interdental cleaning removes plaque and food particles in places where a toothbrush cannot easily reach — under the gumline and between your teeth. Because plaque build-up can lead to tooth decay and gum disease, daily flossing is highly recommended. Rinsing your mouth each day with an antimicrobial mouth rinse is another important step in preventing gingivitis. Brushing and flossing disrupt plaque on the teeth and gums, but teeth make up only less than half of your mouth. To kill plaque and gingivitis germs that brushing leaves behind, be sure to finish your oral care routine with an antiseptic mouthwash with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Speak with your dental hygienist for more information on which mouth rinse is right for you.

October 20, 2012 Hello Again, To say the least, life can be interesting. If you don’t believe me, find an old newspaper and read what was important or newsworthy at that time. As an example, a headline in the July 1, 1973 issue of the Williamsport, Pennsylvania Grit read, “Watergate damages credibility of Nixon,” continuing with, “Clearly the Washington scandal is approaching some sort of climax. Washington observers say it is very unlikely that President Nixon will resign, nor do they believe he will be impeached.” Another front-page headline, “U.S. facing economic slowdown?” Also news on the front page, “Wind viewed as important power source.” Under the news forecast heading on page 7, “A boost in airfares is likely later this year. Airlines are mumbling about the increased cost of fuel, labor, and security.” Further in the same column, “The Senate Republican leader, Hugh Scott of Pennsylvania will soon introduce a comprehensive health bill stating health costs as ‘the highest priority’ of Congress.” Found on page 8 with picture, “The Soviet Communist Party chairman Leonard Brezhnev whispers in the ear of President Nixon.” They both were smiling. Found on page 11, Dr. Roger O. Egebert, special assistant to the president for health policy, discussed two potential plans. “The Kennedy Plan,” he said, “would become just another federally operated program.” We are chatting about July 1, 1973 and today. So I ask, what’s new? 1. Questionable news about the President. 2. Economic problems 3. Raising cost of fuel problems 4. Health program – proposal and problems 5. Proposed national health plan – just another federally operated program. 6. In-the-ear-only conversation between a Russian leader and the President of the United States. This news was the topic of the day 35 years ago. Has anything other than names really changed? More to the point, are we facing any problems in 2012 that are unlike the problems of 1973? Everything seems to be the same except in 2012, we are paying for all of the previous mistakes. How much will it cost us in the future if the federal government is granted more control? Can anyone actually believe big government will cost less? It never has. Here in New York State, we have the largest state government and the highest taxes. More than 150 years ago, a French person named Alexis de Tocqueville said, “The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public’s money.” Question to ponder: How many billions of dollars of the public money does Congress dish back out of our pockets which will eventually destroy or collapse our fiscal policy?” “Democracy extends the sphere of individual freedom; socialism restricts it.”

Original Valley PENNYSAVER • October 20, 2012

Page 7

The larger our federal government grows, the more socialistic it will become, until it smothers our American way of life. As a nation we are, or are we not, the wonder of wonders? Who could think the way we think and yet come out so often smelling as a bunch of fresh-cut roses? While having breakfast at a local diner, the question was asked, “What did you think of the Vice Presidential debate?” The question was answered by a question, “Oh, did they have the debates? Who won?” After a single minute of grunts and groans, conversation turned to baseball. I couldn’t believe they could recall every inning, who was the starting pitcher as well as detailed knowledge of his record, accompanied with names and date of nearly every player on both teams. How could they recall so much and with such enthusiasm? I started wondering if our colleges are trying to educate the wrong students. Is it possible I.Q. and SAT levels should be set aside and good old interviews covering sports, hobbies, and life experiences should be used to determine who has the real college-level ability to learn? Like all Irish families, we seem to enjoy stories about family members. When I was a boy, we had a cousin by the name of William John. He arrived in this country from Ireland and purchased a small dairy farm near Milford – you know, just a few miles below Cooperstown. William John’s sister Frances lived with him. One morning he was later than usual getting out of bed to take care of the dairy. His sister, in a very irritated tone yelled, “There you go again William John. You came home half drunk last night – what do you have to say for yourself?” “It’s not my fault,” he replied. “I ran out of money.” Friday, October 19, 2012 should be a marked day. On October 19, 1780, two hundred and thirty two years ago, a bloody battle took place here in the Mohawk Valley: the battle of Klock’s Field. The Fort Klock original building is still standing as a monument to the early American patriots. This historical building is located near St. Johnsville. Our hats are off to Richardson Brands Company of Canajoharie – drive by and note both the new Richardson signs and the new exterior color. Richardson, you are a great asset to our valley. Richardson Brands include Gravy Master, Dryden & Palmer products, Beechies, and Bogdons. An appliance repairman knocked at the kitchen door, “Come on in,” said a voice inside. He found only a dog and a parrot. He started to lecture the parrot about inviting in an unknown guest. With that, the parrot said to the dog, “Fido – sic him.” A few years ago an unknown man stopped at our office and placed several full-page ads. Without any history of the man, we demanded payment. He asked, “Has anyone ever questioned my honesty?” “Well, no,” was the reply, “but its never been mentioned either.” Yesterday I saw a rather large flock or gaggle of geese traveling northwest over the Mohawk River. We certainly have the best opportunities to enjoy nature at its best. Remember to thank the advertisers in this paper. Without them, this paper could not exist. I’m sure they will thank you for without your support, they could not exist. God be with you until we meet again. Fred Lee and the Lee Family

VanAlstyne Homestead Harvest Festival deemed a success by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Laughter and voices in merry conversations could be heard over the lively music of a fiddle, a sign that the Van Alstyne Homestead Harvest Festival in Canajoharie was in progress and folks were enjoying every minute of it! Adding to the jovial atmosphere was the aroma of homemade soups and breads, which wafted through the building, enticing even the most finicky connoisseur of fine foods to indulge. The menu for the event was prepared by local restaurants including the Ayres House, Canajoharie Country Club, Dome 49, Elephant Bistro, Gino’s, Lisa’s Family Restaurant, Mercato’s, The Table and Chef Michael Lapi of

RPI College. Jeanine Nelson conducted a silent auction benefiting the Canajoharie-Palatine Chamber of Commerce, and folks lined up between sets of Dick Solberg’s Sun Mountain Fiddler Band to bid on the large variety of items available, which included everything from a giant Begonia plant to a case of assorted wines. “All in all, the evening was a great success for all involved,” said Phyllis Lapi, President of the Van Alstyne Homestead Society. “This is due to the cooperation of the Van Alstyne Homestead Society, the Fort Rennselear Club, the Canajoharie-Palatine Chamber of Commerce and all of the businesses who so generously donated to support this event.” Lapi credits the dedication of the Van Alstyne Homestead Society board of directors’ members, especially Mark Brody and

Alice Smith Duncan, as well as “the best volunteers you could hope for, Beth Snyder, Karen Dimond, Melanie Shibley and Karen Mielak,” for the success of the evening. “We had a great turnout, lots of great food, music and fun!” Lapi said that all proceeds from the tickets for this event go to the Van Alstyne Homestead Society to support their mission. “To preserve the building and the collection of paintings, documents and artifacts in our care ~ and to educate the community as to the importance of this historic treasure.” This program was funded in part by the Canajoharie Palatine Root Community Chest and a FultonMontgomery Arts Grant, part of the Decentralization Program, a Regrant Program of the NYS Council on the Arts, administered by Saratoga Arts. The historic Van Alstyne Homestead is located at 42 Moyer St, Canajoharie, NY.

(From left) Karen Dimond, Beth Snyder, Phyllis Lapi Lucky Cheryl Vroman of Canajoharie, and Melanie Shibley all participated in planning the Van accompanied by David Filkins, sits amidst Alstyne Homestead Harvest Festival in Canajoharie and the numerous items she won at the silent took turns greeting guests at the door. auction put on by the Van Alstyne Photos by Elizabeth A. Whatchamacallits In the days of Flintlock firearms this tool was a necessity! The pick was used to clean the vent in the barrel while the brush was used to remove the black powder residue from the pan. The hook on the top fastened around a soldier’s overcoat button. In colonial America, Flintlock guns were the most sophisticated form of technology seen at that time. People relied on them for warfare, as well as food and protection. Flintlocks have left strong impressions upon our culture, deep enough that multiple references to the Flintlock rifle are still common, despite it being hundreds of years since the weapon was rendered ineffective and faulty. The rifle’s use in both

This tool is from the collection of Willis “Skip” Barshied. Revolutionary and Civil wars led to important rifle positions and military drill commands designed around it, which continue to be used today. Also, slang terms still

common in most of the country come from Flintlock references. Those include: "flash in the pan," "lock, stock and barrel," and "going off halfcocked."

As Common As Stones Sunday, October 21st at 3:00PM Do you feel like something is wrong in America? Do you feel like something is wrong in America? Do you see how things have changed in the last 10, 20 or 30 years? Would you be shocked to know that the path our nation walks has been walked by nations before us with predictable and devastating results? Financial advisor, speaker and former pastor Dann West presents AS COMMON AS STONES, his fascinating observations of the parallels between the United States of America and kingdom of Israel under King Solomon. Remarkably similar events between these two nations indicate where our nation is headed, both economically and morally, and how that will affect you in the near future. Find out what the Bible says about where nations that “make silver as common stones” find themselves and how you as a citizen can protect yourself, inform yourself and make a difference.

October is Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month AMSTERDAM, NY — The Montgomery County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MCSPCA) is joining national animal welfare organizations, including the American Humane Association and Petfinder, in marking the month of October as Adopt-a-ShelterDog Month. The MCSPCA is encouraging doglovers to consider adoption by highlighting the many dogs available at its Animal Shelter facility as well as on the website www.mc-spca.org. Several of the dogs recently served as “MCSPCA Ambassadors” and met prospective adopters at the 10th Annual Dog Walk-A-Thon.

Some also participated in the Tremont

Tank, a 2-year old American Bulldog mix, arrived at the MCSPCA Animal Shelter as a stray. He’s a welltempered, friendly and playful boy who loves to be with people. He is smart and learns commands quickly. Tank has been waiting for his new forever home since February.

Lumber Pet Extravaganza in Averill Park on Oct. 6. MCSPCA shelter dogs will also participate in the annual Amsterdam Elks Halloween Parade on Oct. 20. The adoption fee includes vet exam, spay/neuter, deworming and flea treatment, distemper vaccination, Rabies vaccination (4 months & older), PetWatch24® microchip with 1st year registration, an adoption kit, and testing for bordatella, heartworm, Ehrlichia canis and Lyme disease. The MCSPCA dog adoption fees are $200 for puppies (up to 6 months old), $150 for adult dogs, and $75 for senior dogs (6 years and older) and

special needs dogs. An adoption application is required, including references and name of veterinarian. Once an application is accepted, approval of adoption will be considered following a home visit conducted by MCSPCA representatives. The MCSPCA Animal Shelter, located on State Highway 5S just east of Amsterdam, is open Wednesday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dogs may also be previewed on www.mc-spca.org. For more information on the MCSPCA and its programs and events, visit www.mcspca.org, Facebook or info@mc-spca.org.
