Veterans Day: the Poppy Did you ever wonder why the VFW passes out poppies on Memorial Day and Veterans Day? It is in representation of a popular war poem called “In Flanders Fields,” which was written by a soldier during WWI. Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was a Canadian physician. He was inspired to write the poem on May 3, 1915, after presiding over the funeral of friend and fellow soldier Alexis Helmer, who died in the Second Battle of Ypres. At the time of the funeral, McCrae noted how poppies quickly grew around the graves of those who died at Ypres. He composed the poem the following day while sitting in the back of an ambulance. “In Flanders Fields” was first published on Dec. 8 of that year in the London-based magazine Punch, after being rejected by other magazines. According to legend, fellow soldiers retrieved the poem after McCrae, initially unsatisfied with his work, discarded it. On Jan. 28, 1918, while commanding No. 3 Canadian General Hospital (McGill) at Boulogne, France, McCrae died of pneumonia with "extensive pneumococcus meningitis." This was 10 months before the war ended, on Nov 11 (Veteran’s Day), 1918. In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Hello Again, November 10, 2012 In this day of being politically correct, I wonder if it is acceptable to have memories of events in your life when a situation was – by today’s standards – not politically correct. When I was a young lad living in our tiny village, Halloween always brought out the terrible goblins in all of us. Farmers hay wagons loaded with whatevers were drawn into the village and parked up against Charlie Hearn’s store. Outhouses, including the boys and girls behind the schoolhouse, were tipped over and shoved down the bank into the Cherry Valley Creek. Windows of cars, homes, and the country general stores were always soaped – which brings up the point of this line of chatter. We had a lady whom I will not name, to be politically correct, who whole-heartedly joined in the holidays nonsense and merry making such as turning cows and horses loose, setting harmless bonfires in the middle of a street and naturally soaping the higher windows as she was not only very large, but also very tall. She could reach windows that we kids couldn’t. About 8:30 Halloween night, dressed in a spooky burlap costume, carrying a straw broom, she came bursting into the lower grocery store with large tears streaming down her cheeks, while halfscreaming like an Irish banshee. The storeowner – my cousin Norm – in as much of a sympathetic tone as he could muster asked, “What’s wrong? Are you hurt?” She answered, “I was over to Barney’s bent over soaping his windows and he snuck up behind me and kicked me right in my rear.” With that, cousin Norm laughed and said, “How could he miss?” That was back during the World War II years when everyone was talking about the terrible warmongers – the Krauts (Germans) and Japs (Japanese). Now even mentioning the size of the lady soaper or the Krauts and Japs would certainly not be politically correct but I have to admit, it’s the kind of stuff memories are made of. As a kid, did you ever take a hunk of Ivory and soap a few windows? I would not recommend you do it now-a-days. Our politically correct society would not find any humor in your act but would call in the local bulls (not politically correct) and have you arrested. Oops, there I go again. Isn’t it rather strange or do you suppose some humorist or comedian chose to have Halloween, the evening of October 31st, followed by All Saints Day and Election Day at the same time of year? Do you suppose the good Lord, knowing there are no real Halloween characters, sees the humor in piggy-backing election time along with spooks, ghosts, and goblins? Where is Dr. Louis Jones of Cooperstown, author of “Things Go Bump in the Night” when we need him? Realizing I’m just a country boy who missed kindergarten and Harvard, but a lot of my friends remember me in grade, high school, and even college – but not kindergarten, our country school board hadn’t figured that one out yet so our Mom’s continued to be our unpaid baby-sitters. Another four years have come and gone and the citizens of the greatest nation on the face of this God-created globe have chosen to keep Barack Obama as President for the next four years. While some did not vote for him, the election is over and 100% of all of our citizens should try to
Original Valley PENNYSAVER • November 10, 2012

support him. Naturally support can only come honestly if we believe in what he is attempting to accomplish. I’m a firm believer in praying for our leaders, especially our president. Remember during President Clinton’s second term, he moved from the far left towards the center? It is quite possible that during the near future, we will have to tighten our belts. This coming week could be the correct time to start a New Year’s resolution or resolutions. Just to mention a few: turn your home thermostat down and wear warmer clothes. Drive no faster than 55 mph. We do not always have to step on the gas and pass that slower driver up ahead. Look for bargains and use coupons at the grocery store. If your habit has been to drive twenty to thirty miles to go shopping, try shopping at a local store. Most cars will burn a gallon of gas for every twenty miles traveled. A thirty mile trip is actually sixty miles and could cost you three gallons of gas at $4 per gallon. You will save $12. It’s time to put the preaching soapbox away and enjoy a chuckle or two. Little Charlie wanted $100 so badly that he decided to write a letter to God. The post office forwarded the letter to the president. The president, while amused, ordered $5 be sent to the boy. When the boy opened the letter and found $5, not $100, he wrote another letter to God and said, “Thank you, but your letter passed through Washington and they took 95 percent.” We have to realize that President Obama is now faced with a similar problem as the one George Washington faced. He can no longer blame everything on the previous president. God bless you, our friends, President Obama and Mr. Romney. If you see something red chugging by, it won’t be me. It’s too cold. But wave anyway – somehow I’ll get the message. A farmer who had driven his mules to town one morning arrived back home three hours late. His wife asked why it took so long. He said, “You won’t believe it but I picked up the president, and from then on, them mules did not obey or understand a word that was said.” We just received a phone call from a friend who lives down near New York City. Their electricity was just turned on and now they have a foot of snow. I know he didn’t blame their troubles on Bush and certainly can’t blame Romney. If he wants to remain politically correct – what can he do? Certainly blaming the good Lord might not be the smart thing to do, or even politically correct. A personal note to all of our friends and readers: Since my wife’s open-heart surgery last week, Sylvia has received a fantastic pile of cards, letters, and phone calls. Everyone mentioned their prayers for which we are grateful. Prayer does work. To those ladies who cooked, prepared, and delivered those super-suppers, I think I feel a case of the hee-bee-geebies coming on and we’ve eaten all the food you so graciously delivered . . . so far. Sylvia is gaining every day and sends her prayers and thanks. The surgery was a complete success. We give thanks to our Lord along with the surgeon, cardiologist, anesthesiologist, nurses and technicians, and for our praying friends. Fred Lee and the Lee Family

Christmas collection for our servicemen and women Court Catherine Esther #1264, the local Catholic Daughters Court in Canajoharie, is once more spearheading a drive to collect and send needed items to our servicemen and women for Christmas. Collection boxes have been placed in the lobbies of the NBT banks in Fort Plain, Canajoharie and St Johnsville. Collection boxes may also be found in Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Fort Plain and the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Canajoharie. The deadline for this endeavor is Nov. 26 so that the collection can be packed and sent in
time to reach the troops by Christmas. This year LT Col. Lisa M. Bowman has provided names and addresses of several men from the Albany/Schenectady area to receive the shipment. The collection will be mailed to several Air Force A e r o m e d i c a l Evacuation Technicians in Afghanistan and they in turn will distribute the collection to the troops in their area. Some suggested items include; portable games, crossword puzzle books and paperback books (no hardcovers, please); double A batteries (these are espe-
cially needed), triple A and C batteries; travel sized shampoos, lotions, soaps, powders, (no hotel samples, please): shaving supplies and disposable razors; baby wipes and feminine hygiene products; toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss and mouthwash; sunblock, bug repellant and packages of glass cleaners for sunglasses, shelf stable pudding, gelatin and fruit cups; peanuts, pretzels and snack crackers; individually wrapped granola and cereal bars; instant oatmeal and dry soup packets, Beef Jerky and Slim Jims; hard candies,
gum and Life Savers. Please note that we cannot accept any glass bottles or jars, aerosol cans, or sprays, chocolate bars or canned food. The court is also asking for monetary donations to help defray the cost of shipping and to purchase AT&T calling cards. Checks should be made out to “CDA Court #1264” and mailed to Terry O’Connell. 2 Maple Ave., Apt 210, Canajoharie, NY, 13317. Thank you all for anything that you can do to help our troops and above all, remember them in your prayers. For more information contact Marlene Nalli, 518-993-2837 or Kathy Walsh at 518673-5568.

Morris J Edwards American Legion Post 168 Veterans salute the flag by Elizabeth A. Tomlin “When they called, we didn’t think twice,” remarked St. Johnsville’s Morris J. Edwards American Legion Post 168 past Commander Pete Manikas. “We just did our duty.” Manikas, a Veteran of the Korean War, was referring to the call to serve our country, the great United States of America. Bob Loccia, also a past Commander of the Post, is a Veteran of four different wars. Loccia agrees with Manikas. “It’s an honor to be a Veteran,” he said. Alan “Charlie” Weaver, 3rd Vice Commander of the Post, reports that Loccia has not missed marching in a single parade with the Legion since 1968. “Loccia spent 6 years in active duty as a Marine and then was with the Army National Guard for another 25 years,” stated Weaver. “He is really one of our notable Veterans!”
St. Johnsville's Morris J. Edwards American Legion Post 168 Veterans gathered at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Park to salute the flag in observance of this Veterans Day. Attending the event were Rich Pedro, Bill Meier, Tim Rice, Rich Carter, Commander Tony Susi, bugler Joe Sokol, Bob Loccia, Pete Manikas, Alan (Charlie) Weaver, Alan Littrell, Dale Potter, Joe Swank and Roy Thomson. Photos by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Immediate past Commander and Chaplain, Alan Littrell remarked, “The freedom we have today is because of guys like me.” “I served my country and I’m proud of it!” attested current Commander Tony Susi. these comments while meeting at the St. Johnsville’s Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Park along with a group of other Post 168 legionnaires to salute the American flag in honor of this year’s Veterans Day. Susi remarked that the Post would be presenting their annual Veterans Day program at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center on Sunday, at 11 a.m., where miniature flags will be handed out to everyone who attends. This event will be followed up by another, region-wide, program that will be held Sunday afternoon at the Holy Family Catholic Parish on East Main St. in Little Falls at 3 p.m., honoring our Veterans. This special event will
feature a military ceremony with patriotic music, followed by a free luncheon. Call 315-823-3410 for more information.
Past Commander Bob Loccia, a Veteran of 4 different wars, joined the group for the salute.

Whatchamacallits These saw sets come to us from an entrepeneuring local. Abel Stillman of Poland, NY patented them on Sept. 26, 1848. The “set” of a saw refers to the angle each tooth is bent away from the saw plate. This is a complex process of measuring multiple angles because the blade cannot be a constant thickness throughout, otherwise the saw will bind. The amount of set applied to the blade is measured with a micrometer. Once measurements are
taken, saw sets are used to pinch and bend each tooth in order to properly align them. The person setting must also make sure not to set the teeth too far the opposite direction. Stillman’s saw sets were neither the first nor last versions of this tool to be made. The additions he made are spelled out in the patent: “The revolv-
ing jaw having at the ends of its arms depressions of different lengths and depths, and lengths for different teeth, in combination with the angle bar and adjusting screw.” The saw set is also not Stillman’s only invention. He also patented some improvements on a coffee bean roaster on Dec. 28, 1840.

Collecting by Larry Cox Singer sewing machine Q: I have inherited an old Singer sewing machine and wonder if it is worth keeping. — Betty, North Port, FL A: There are millions of older Singer sewing machines tucked away in American homes. Because so many were made, they really aren’t worth that much money as a collectible. Most of the treadle models that I’ve seen in antique shops and malls have been priced well below $200. For example, I spotted a Singer Model No. 15-30 from about 1910 for $175, a Singer Model 66 also from the same period for $195, and a Singer No. 27-4 in oak cabinet, $150. There are always exceptions to every rule. Check out www.MySingerStory.com for historical facts about the older machines. It is also an interactive website that invites Singer fans from across the country to share their personal stories and memories of this iconic machine. Q: Is there anything you can tell me about a vase that I have. I can’t find any markings on it. I have always been curious about
it and would especially like to know its value and how old it is.— Carol, Willmer, MN A: You have sent me a question that is impossible to answer. Even with the picture you sent, identifying the piece and determining its age would take a professional appraiser. I think your piece is probably from the 1950s or ‘60s, judging by its design, but that is only a guess. Having it appraised might cost more than the piece is worth. With that in mind, you might show it to antique dealers in your area for their opinions. Q: I have a collection of Look, Life and Saturday Evening Post magazines from the 1960s and ‘70s. What do you think they are worth? -Meda, Bethalto, Ill. A: In the case of magazines, you truly can judge them by their covers. JFK covers, for example, generally sell for a couple dollars more than many of the others. Most Look, Life and Saturday Evening Post magazines from this period are fairly plentiful and generally retail in the $5 to $10 range in shops. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

My upright drill press was made by the Buffalo Forge Company, and my cast-iron corn grinder was made by the Southern Plow Company. Though ceiling fans are most associated with warmweather seasons, most can be effective throughout the winter months as well, helping circulate warm air throughout a room in much the same way they circulate cool air during the warmer weather. Most of today’s fans have a switch near the motor housing that alters the direction in which the fan’s blades turn. When a ceiling fan is used in the summer, its blades push the air downward, moving cool air around the room. The air blowing around the

room is what cools people within the room. When the blades’ direction is altered, the blades then push the air upward toward the ceiling. This drives the hot air, which typically rises to the top, down toward the edges of the room. This helps circulate warm air throughout a room, making for more even heating. What’s more, this improved heat circulation helps combat window sweating that results from condensation on the glass when hot air is not effectively circulated throughout a home.

Record crowd attends the Central Mohawk Valley Lions Club’s 14th annual Variety Stars
Story and photos by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Performers from the Mohawk Valley entertained what appeared to be a record crowd at the Arkell Performing Arts Center in the Canajoharie High School on Friday, Nov. 2. “I don’t remember ever having such a large crowd,” stated Variety Show Chairman Tom Armitstead. Armitstead credits show director Walt Maaser for doing an “outstanding job” as coordinator. “Things really ran smoothly with Walt in charge. We had a lot of favorable comments.” Armitstead also commends Will Ryan who acted as Emcee and the Canajoharie Computer Science Interns for doing a “tremendous job” with the lights and sound system. “We enjoy doing the show and are always looking for new people and new ideas,” Armitstead commented. “We like to see the young talent, watching them develop and grow; like the Dependents, who have been with us for several years.” Armitstead said the Central Mohawk Lions extend their thanks to all who came and performed at the show, and looks forward to seeing many of the performers return for next year’s 15th annual ‘November Stars’ Variety Show.
Chorallaires “We just hope everyone enjoyed the show,” remarked Armitstead.

All About Pumpkins Pumpkins are a type of gourd that grows on just about every continent (Antarctica not included). The majority of pumpkins are
bought and sold around Halloween, commonly to convert to jack-o-lanterns. However, pumpkins can be used as a delicious food source. Here is some other interesting information about pumpkins. Pumpkins are believed to have originated in North America. Seeds from pumpkins dating back to 7000 B.C. have been found in Mexico. The name
“pumpkin” evolved originally from the Greek word “pepon,” for large melon. The French called them “pompon,” and the English eventually changed the word to “pumpion.” There are dozens of varieties of pumpkins and they come in many colors, including white, besides the familiar orange. Most pumpkins can be harvested for carving. However, certain varieties are better for cooking. These include the Buckskin, Chelsey, Dickinson Field, and Kentucky Field. It is possible for the home gardener to
grow pumpkins. It may take a few tries, but the results can be worth it if pumpkins eventually form. Keep in mind that although pumpkin plants will produce several flowers throughout the life of the plant, a person can expect only one to two actual pumpkins per vine. Pumpkin plants naturally produce separate male and female flowers on the same plant for pollination. Pumpkin plants should be watered, but only the roots, in the early morning or during the day for good health. Wet leaves can lead to
mildew. Later -day watering may result in powdery mildew, a blight that can form and spread quickly. Bugs are another problem that may destroy a pumpkin plant. The cucumber beetle is a carrier of plant disease. Of course, if growing pumpkins seems too much work, a trip to a local pumpkin patch is a good excursion for families. Pumpkins ripen at the end of summer into early fall. However, it could be best to wait until later in the season to pick a pumpkin because a picked or carved pumpkin won’t last forever.

Root Historical Society hosts Election Day Bake Sale
Jane Hotaling and Sandy Atchinson, members of the Root Historical Society, held a bake sale at the Root Town Hall on election day. After citizens cast votes to fill local and national political offices, many stopped to buy goodies and treats on their way out the door. There was also a raffle to enter, the winner to be provided with all the groceries needed for a complete Christmas Dinner. Photo by Joan Kark-Wren

Close the deal • The final step in the home buying process is called the “closing” or “settlement.” The closing usually takes place using the services of a settlement agent who oversees the transfer of the property from the seller to the buyer. • Prior to closing, you need to secure the services of a title company. The title company provides you with title insurance and often serves as the settlement agent. Title insurance protects you and the lender from claims by others against your new home. • The settlement agent will set up escrow to manage the transfer of the property. All documents, deeds, titles, funds and conditions of the sale are collected in escrow and monitored by the settlement agent. When all of the conditions specified in escrow agreement have been met, you and the seller will be instructed to make an appointment to sign the paperwork that will finalize the closing. • Before you go to the closing, understand the Real Estate Settlement
Procedures Act (RESPA) and the protections that it offers you. Lenders are required to give you paperwork that outlines the costs you will incur in receiving the loan. These documents include the charges you will likely pay at closing and an estimate of your monthly mortgage payments, a Settlement State-ment that details all closing costs, and a Truth-in-Lending Statement that outlines all of the specifics of the loan. • Prepare ahead for closing day. At closing, you will sign numerous papers that make the sale final. Make sure that you have a good idea of what the settlement costs should be so that you can check the paperwork for errors before you sign. You will be required to bring picture ID and a cashier’s check to cover the closing costs. • The transaction is recorded with the county within a day or two of closing. After the recording, you will be given the keys to your new home! Source: www. extension.org

Fall into a Vehicle Maintenance Program
Brought to you by Car Care Council October is Fall Car Care Month, the perfect time to fall into a vehicle maintenance program and get your car ready for the challenges of harsh winter weather. Whether you do it yourself or take your car to a professional service technician, the Car Care Council recommends 10 basic maintenance procedures to keep your vehicle operating at its best: 1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. 2. Check the hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear. 3. Check the battery and replace if necessary. Make sure the connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free. 4. Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change. 5. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without
delay. 6. Schedule a tuneup to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions. 7. Check the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons such as defrosting. 8. Inspect the steering and suspension system annually including shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components. 9. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. 10. Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation. A free digital Car Care Guide can be found on the council’s website at www.carcare.org/carcare-guide.

Oneida Nation honors veterans at 12th annual event New York Air National Guard Colonel Dawne L. Deskins, Commander of the Eastern Air Defense Sector (EADS) in Rome, NY addressed nearly 500 military veterans from across Central New York at its 12th annual Veterans Recognition Ceremony Saturday, Nov. 3, hosted by the Oneida Indian Nation. Deskins, told the Veterans at this pre-Veterans Day “Your service and sacrifice has been instrumental in getting this country where it is.” Bradd Vickers, a Chenango County Vietnam War Veteran, noted “I have enjoyed meeting with other Veterans from Central New York and Canada at these events each year and listening to them tell of their service in the military. It is truly an honor to be invited to such an event.” Col. Deskins discussed the role of EADS and the Central New York military
response to the call she took on Sept. 11, 2001 which turned out to be a terrorist attack on the U.S. in her address. Since Sept. 11, EADS has grown in operation to monitor the eastern portion of the United States from the Mississippi River to the Atlantic Ocean, covering more than 1 million square miles of air space. The work is done by 178 radars throughout the eastern sector. Deskins said, “As a commander, it’s always an honor to go out and speak to veterans and let them know what we’re doing now in the military. I think this is a fantastic event that the Oneida Nation puts together to get all of these people in one place and honor them, particularly in November, with it being Veterans Day.” Also in attendance was Rainy Collins-Vickers, Vice President of McDonough American Legion

Auxiliary Unit 1478 who said, “This is a great tribute by the Oneida Nations to honor our Veterans every year and bring so many of them together in one place.” The Oneida Nation Foundation also presented a $1,000 donation to Feed Our Vets. The nonprofit food pantry organization based in Utica and founded by Navy veteran Richard Synek has the objective of providing fully-stocked food pantries for veterans in need set up in accessible locations across the country. Learn more about Feed Our Vets at www.FeedOurVets.org. As First Allies of the United States during the Revolutionary War, the Oneida Nation finds it important to remember and honor all of those who have served and are now serving in the armed forces in this lead-up to Veterans Day.
Honoring our veterans On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month in 1918, an armistice, or agreement to stop fighting, was reached between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I.
One year later, President Woodrow Wilson declared that Nov. 11, 1919 was a day to remember Americans for their military service in World War I. He called it Armistice Day. He suggested that Americans celebrate with parades and perhaps a “brief suspension of business” around 11 a.m. President Wilson also hoped it would be a time when Americans offered prayers of thanksgiving for those who had served and for peace for all times. • President Wilson originally intended Armistice Day to be observed one time, but many states decided to observe it every year to honor World War I veterans. • Congress followed the states’ lead and in 1938 declared that every Nov. 11 would be observed as Armistice Day. • Congress changed the name to Veterans Day in 1954 to honor veterans of all wars. • For a brief time, 1971-1974, Veterans Day was observed on the 4th Monday in October. Since 1975, Veterans Day is always observed on Nov. 11. • If Nov. 11 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the federal government observes the holiday on the previous Friday or following Monday, respectively. • Nov. 11, 1921, when the first of the unknown soldiers was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, unidentified soldiers also were laid to rest at Westminster Abbey in London and at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. • Memorial Day, the fourth Monday in May, honors American service members who died in service to their country. • Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans, living or dead, but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. • States designate their own holidays, so there are no official U.S. national holidays. The government can only designate holidays for federal employees and for the District of Columbia. But states almost always follow the federal lead. Timeline for Veterans Day observance Nov. 11, 1918: The fighting in World War I ended. (The Treaty of Versailles formally ended the war on June 28, 1919) November 1919: President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that Nov. 11, 1919, would be observed as Armistice Day — a day to honor the veterans of World War I. Nov. 11, 1921: The first of the unknown soldiers, a veteran of World War I, was buried in Arlington Cemetery in Virginia in what has become known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. On the same day, unidentified soldiers were laid to rest at Westminster Abbey in London and at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. June 4, 1926: Twenty-seven states had made Armistice Day a holiday so Congress declared it to be a recurring day of remembrance. May 13, 1938: Congress makes Armistice Day a national holiday. June 28, 1968: Congress changed Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. Sept. 20, 1975: President Gerald Ford changed Veterans Day back to Nov. 11. Winterize your home • Winterize your home to extend the life of your fuel supply by insulating walls and attics, caulking and weatherstripping doors and windows, and installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic. • Winterize your house, barn, shed or any other structure that may provide shelter for your family, neighbors, livestock or equipment. Clear rain gutters; repair roof leaks and cut away tree branches that could fall on a house or other structure during a storm. • Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected every year. • Insulate pipes with insulation or newspapers and plastic and allow faucets to drip a little during cold weather to avoid freezing. Running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing. • All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside and kept clear. • Keep fire extinguishers on hand, and make sure everyone in your house knows how to use them. House fires pose an additional risk, as more people turn to alternate heating sources with-
out taking the necessary safety precautions. • Learn how to shut off water valves (in case a pipe bursts). • Insulate your home by installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic from the inside to keep cold air out. • Hire a contractor to check the structural ability of the roof to sustain unusually heavy weight from the accumulation of snow - or water, if drains on flat roofs do not work. Source: www.ready.gov
Before winter storms and extreme cold To prepare for a winter storm you should do the following: • Before winter approaches, add the following supplies to your emergency kit: - Rock salt or more environmentally safe products to melt ice on walkways. Visit the Environmental Protection Agency for a complete list of recommended products. - Sand to improve traction. - Snow shovels and other snow removal equipment. - Sufficient heating fuel. You may become isolated in your home and regular fuel sources may be cut off. Store a good supply of dry, seasoned wood for your fireplace or wood-burning stove. - Adequate clothing and blankets to keep you warm.
• Make a Family Communications Plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency. • Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or other local news channels for critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS). Be alert to changing weather conditions. • Minimize travel. If travel is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle. • Bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water. Source: www.ready.gov
Start with trust after Storm Sandy BBB offers tree removal advice Storm Sandy blew through Upstate New York and left a myriad of concern for our community. Natural disasters like Storm Sandy can bring out the best in people, as strangers reach out to help others in need. Unfortunately, BBB experience tells us crises also bring out persons who choose to take advantage of the victims. Some of the most common “after-disaster” scams involve damage done to trees. Seems simple enough however it’s important to consider Better Business Bureau tips for homeowners who suffered tree damage in the wake of the storm: • Check with your insurance company about policy coverage and specific filing requirements. • Check the BBB Accredited Business Directory to find a business you can trust. Not only are these businesses committed to honest and ethical practices, but BBB has checked licensing requirements and should something go wrong, these businesses have committed to respond to your concerns. • Take time to shop around and get three estimates. For large projects, ask the tree service how many projects like yours they have completed in the last year. Ask for several local references that are at least one year-old and follow through on checking them.
• Verify with your local city or town municipality to determine if tree removal businesses are required to be licensed/registered to do work in your area. • Check to see whether the business in question is a member of any reputable trade association, such as the NYS Arborists. • Ask if certified arborists, who have professional training and certifications, are on staff. An experienced arborist is particularly important on projects involving large trees or removal of substantial branches on established trees. • Make sure each tree service you are considering has current liability insurance and workers compensation insurance. All certificates of insurance should be sent from the tree service’s insurance agency directly to you. Otherwise, it could be a fraudulent certificate. • Require a written contract agreement with anyone you hire. Be sure their name, address, license number, if applicable, and phone number are included in the contract. Read and understand the contract in its entirety and don’t sign a blank contract. A copy of the signed contract is to be given to you at time of signature. Do not assume that tree stump removal is included in the contract if it is not specified. • Once you have picked a tree service
you feel comfortable with, never pay for a tree removal or tree trimming project of any kind until you are 100 percent satisfied with the work. Pay by credit card only when the job is complete. Paying by credit card provides some recourse should the job not be completed as stated in the contract. • Although you may be anxious to get things back to normal, avoid letting your emotions get the better of you. Don’t be pressured into making an immediate decision. Be wary of door-todoor solicitations and check to see if your community requires them to have solicitation permits. Ask how the job will be done, and if they will perform the work according to industry standards. If they mention “topping a tree,” “lion’s-tailing” or “using climbing spikes to prune a tree” the company does not follow industry standards. “Topping” is drastically cutting back the major limbs of a tree to reduce its size. “Lion’s tailing” is an extreme stripping out of most of the interior branches of a tree. Such practices can injure or kill your tree. Some techniques will be presented as a way to save money by removing more of the tree at one time. However a tree pruned by one of these methods usually requires more expensive restoration work in the future in order to save it.
Beware of a tree service if they: • Don’t have printed materials, letterhead, bid forms, etc. • Are vague about formal credentials as an arborist. • Offer an unusually low price . . . at first. • Only accepts cash payments, and/or asks for payment up front. • Pressures you for an immediate decision. • Offers you a discount to find other customers. Residents may also encounter other types of debris from damaged buildings, household and other types of hazardous waste. BBB encourages consumers to check with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation for information on where debris may be stored. Remember, your main goal is to regain your sense of normalcy while doing so within the guidelines set by our state and federal agency. Disaster victims should never feel forced to make a hasty decision or to choose an unknown tree service. For reliable information, lists of BBB Accredited Businesses by industry and BBB Business Reviews you can trust on local businesses, visit bbb.org or call 800828-5000.

Check or have a mechanic check the following items on your car: • Antifreeze levels - ensure they are sufficient to avoid freezing. • Battery and ignition system - should be in top condition and battery terminals should be clean. • Brakes - check for wear and fluid levels. • Exhaust system - check for leaks and crimped pipes and repair or replace as necessary. Carbon monoxide is deadly and usually gives no warning. • Fuel and air filters - replace and keep water out of the system by using additives and maintaining a full tank of gas. A full tank will keep the fuel line from freezing. • Heater and defroster - ensure they work properly. • Lights and flashing hazard lights - check for serviceability. • Oil - check for level and weight. Heavier oils congeal more at low temperatures and do not lubricate as well. • Thermostat - ensure it works properly. • Windshield wiper equipment - repair any problems and maintain proper washer fluid level. • Install good winter tires - Make sure the tires have adequate tread. All-weather radials are usually adequate for most winter conditions. However, some jurisdictions require that to drive on their roads, vehicles must be equipped with chains or snow tires with studs. Update the emergency kits in your vehicles with: • a shovel • windshield scraper and small broom • flashlight • battery powered radio • extra batteries • water • snack food • matches • extra hats, socks and mittens • first aid kit with pocket knife • necessary medications • blanket(s) • tow chain or rope • road salt and sand • booster cables • emergency flares • fluorescent distress flag Source: www.ready.gov
