Photo by Elizabeth Tomlin The Thanksgiving Day debate Thanksgiving has been an American tradition since the colonies were being settled but it was not an official, annual holiday until 1863, when during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens," to be celebrated on Thursday, Nov. 26. Abraham Lincoln’s successors followed his example of annually declaring the final Thursday in November to be Thanksgiving. But in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt broke with this tradition. November had five Thursdays that year (instead of the morecommon four), and Roosevelt declared the fourth Thursday as Thanksgiving rather than the fifth one. With the country still in the midst of The Great Depression, Roosevelt thought an earlier Thanksgiving would give merchants a longer period to sell goods before Christmas. Increasing profits and spending during this period, Roosevelt hoped, would help bring the country out of the Depression. At the time, advertising goods for Christmas before Thanksgiving was considered inappropriate. But Republicans decried the change, calling it an affront to the memory of Lincoln. People began referring to Nov. 30 as the “Republican Thanksgiving” and Nov. 23 as the “Democratic Thanksgiving” or “Franksgiving.” On Oct. 6, 1941, both houses of the U.S. Congress passed a joint resolution fixing the traditional last-Thursday date for the holiday. However, in December of that year the Senate passed an amendment to the resolution that split the difference by requiring that Thanksgiving be observed annually on the fourth Thursday of November, which was sometimes the last Thursday and sometimes (less frequently) the next to last. The amendment passed the U.S. House, and on Dec. 26, 1941 President Roosevelt signed this bill, for the first time making the date of Thanksgiving a matter of federal law and fixing the day as the fourth Thursday of November. However, for several years some states continued to observe the lastThursday date in years with five November Thursdays (the next such year being 1944), with Texas doing so as late as 1956.

Hello Again, November 17, 2012 My annual goose watch is nearly over. Last Saturday one of our fellow Hello Again readers ran out of Stewart’s as I was backing away, pointing and yelling, “There go your geese.” Sure enough, a sky full of geese traveling east along the south side of our valley. Hundreds, if not thousands of geese in several V formations were up there enjoying our valley. Turkeys don’t fly in a gaggle formation so I guess my next sky watch will be for Old Saint Nick and his reindeer. We can be sure Rudolph with his red nose will be up there in the lead if he’s not too old. In my mind’s ear I can still hear Gene Autry, the famous singing movie cowboy, singing “Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, had a very shiny nose.” I imagine wise old Santa already knows to stay away from the airspace over the thruway. With all of the trips he has to make, the thruway would put Christmas gift giving out of business if the thruway authorities considered Santa’s sleigh as a truck. Maybe Santa with his flying sled will fall under a federal government outreach program and will borrow money from China to support Rudolph and his friends. See — we never have to lose hope. If we could gather around the old chunk stove at Charlie Hearn’s general store one more time, what tales we could spin. Our so-called modern way of life has changed so much our chatter about the good old days would sound like a barrel of blarney fresh from the old country. Pat and Mike would have a field day in that group. What do you think the original group of farmers and townsmen would say if you tried to convince them that all of the family owned shops along Main Street USA would no longer be there. Huge chain stores would force them out of business, selling clothes, appliances, and what-have-you’s manufactured in China, Japan, Taiwan, and countries all over the world — everywhere, but not in the USA or with American labor. To top it off, you would have to drive your car for 20-30 miles, not a three minute drive or walk down to Main Street. Burn up to three gallons of gas at $4.00+ per gallon, park in a four acre parking lot, walk three hundred feet to the store entrance, find a cart, walk another two hundred to three hundred feet while in the store, stand in line at the cashier, wait for five minutes while they do a price check. All of this to purchase a product made in China which drove a family member out of work. But you can pay for it with your credit card. Don’t stand around doing nothing unless you want your neighbors to think you have a government job. Our original printing press was so un-modern, the rainbow had to be printed in black and white. A pathway to easy riches: When a socialist says he became rich through hard work, ask him whose hard work and write a book about it. A few years ago when I first became interested in writing, “Hello Again,” I was told to never refer to anyone as poor — they were needy. Then I was told it was defeating to use the word needy, they were merely deprived. After a bit I learned that under-privileged was politically wrong. Disadvantaged would be more acceptable. I still don’t pretend to write politically correct but I am gaining a great vocabulary. I ask — is a bum still a bum or is he disadvantaged? If such a person refuses gainful employment, what should we call him?

Maybe…smarter than you and me! A young dad said his education is growing in leaps and bounds now that he is doing his kids homework while they watch T.V. An agriculture agent was heard saying to a young farmer, “Before you tackle that field you should spend time thinking about it.” His father, an old-time farmer said, “You’ll never plow that field by turning it over in your mind.” To not teach your kids to work is like teaching them to steal. A world of caution to our local parents: The Amsterdam Police Department has reported that a drug probe of the highest magnitude was successfully carried out this past week. For this we can say a loud thank you to all of the participating law enforcement agencies. Moms and Dads, be very watchful. Don’t let the drug pedaling bums get near your children. During the past presidential race I learned that a candidate did not have to be concerned with telling the truth. The liberal news media would not judge or correct, but smooth it over with two-sided blarney. Remember those great words, “To tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?” What has higher minimum wages accomplished? I can think of two things. A lot of people no longer have a job at all so they have learned how to live happily ever after on the dole. High school and college students cannot find a job at all due to the too high salary dictated by the government, so they grow into adults with their own pockets empty and their hands in someone else’s. Is this a good way to train our youth? Remember some of your mothers or grandmothers pet saying? Such as, “A stitch in time saves nine” or “it takes less time to do the job right the first time than to do it over?” How about this one? Instead of only saying to a friend in financial need, “I’ll pray for you,” reach into your pocket, hand him a ten spot and quietly pray for him. This is when “action speaks louder than words.” On the way home to St. Johnsville I passed a farmer with a three-horse team plowing and preparing the field for a crop to be planted next spring. Every furrow was turned over properly. It was obvious the man takes pride in his work and was taught how to do the job the correct way. He is a neighbor we can be proud of. Keep up the good work, neighbor. Our country, especially our young, need to learn from men like you. You know how a cup of hot cider and a bowl of popcorn makes you feel warm and thankful? When you say hello to a neighbor, it produces the same results and when you talk over one of his problems with the Lord, your prayer will automatically add the appreciated butter. Put on your long john’s and button up the back flap. Let’s chat again next week. Winter is on its way. Fred Lee and the Lee Family

Benefit for homeless veterans held at HC Smith Benefit Club by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Homeless veterans were the focus of a fundraiser at the HC Smith Benefit Club in St. Johnsville on Saturday, Nov. 10. The benefit, which was organized by Benefit Club members Ann Pendolf, Chris Lape, Derrick Craver and Matt Crannell, featured a roast beef dinner, “home brewed beer” and wine tasting, along with a 50/50 raffle and a Chinese auction. Local citizens and businesses from Cobleskill to Saint Johnsville donated all the raffle items for the event. “We served about 150 people and raised $3,292,” reported Matt Crannell, one of the members who volunteered his help for the day. “The HC Smith Benefit Club donated the Hall and its members donated their time to cook and serve for the Benefit,” Crannell remarked.

4th Annual Candlelight Memorial Service The 4th Annual Candlelight Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 6:30 p.m., at the C a n a j o h a r i e Reformed Church, Front St., Canajoharie, NY. Love doesn’t end with death. Families who have had a child die understand that. And it is with that understanding, plans are currently underway in hundreds of areas across the country, as well as around the globe for a Worldwide Candle Lighting event. The 4th Annual Candlelight Memorial Service sponsored by Court Catherine Esther #1264, The Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Reformed Church of Canajoharie, NY, will host together this ecumenical event on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the C a n a j o h a r i e Reformed Church. Held annually, the second Sunday in December, the Worldwide Candle Lighting unites family and friends who light candles for one hour to honor and remember children who have died at any age from any cause. As candles burn down in one time zone, they are then lit in the next, creating a virtual 24hour wave of light as the observances continues around the world. This event unites the families to

mourn as one, especially during the holidays. This special Sunday, thousands of families join in quietly, lighting candles informally in their home or in churches and houses of worship, funeral homes, hospitals and local hospice and civic community groups. Please join us in this beautiful tribute to our children. All families and friends are invited to attend from all of our surrounding communities. This service can make handling the holiday season a little easier. Come light a candle in memory of a child, sibling or a grandchild who has died, that their light may always shine. “We invite everyone to participate. Whether it is to support someone you know or because you have been personally touched by the death of a child,” says Catherine Smith, member of Court Catherine Esther #1264. Please RSVP by Dec. 7, to Cathy Smith, 26 Otsego St., Canajo-harie, NY 13317 or call her at 518-673-2718. Refreshments will be served after the event. We will also have a “Memorial Table” available for displaying poems, pictures and other mementos remembering the life of your child.

Whatchamacallits In lumbering, Cant Hooks — also known as Cant Dogs — are used to roll logs. The metal arm is pulled open (as shown below) and hooked around the circumference of a log. The lumberjack then either pulls or pushes the wooden bar as leverage, effectively jolting a stuck log loose or gently rolling logs along an intended path. This particular Cant Hook was patented on Aug. 24, 1869 by Peter Schultz of Rockwood, NY. It is presumed that this one was a sales-

man’s sample, as it is smaller than a typical Cant Hook should be. The wooden bar on a Cant Hook should be about five feet long. A Cant Hook is a commonly used tool in both the logging and timber industries. It is used to pry stuck logs loose, to help load wood into a vehicle for transport or to stack logs in a pile. It also serves as a method of controlling the

travel of logs through a processing machine or body of water and allows workers to clear jams while staying clear of the logs. Workers in lumber yards and sawmills are not the only users of the tool. It can be found in the collection of contractors; also many landowners and farmers may keep a Cant Hook on hand for moving firewood or fallen trees.

Don’t get caught up in Black Friday frenzy For many, shopping on Black Friday has become as much of a Thanksgiving tradition as turkey, with friends and families whipping up a shopping strategy along with the dressing and gravy. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling advises consumers to shop smart by planning ahead. Here are five steps consumers should take before hitting the stores to enjoy their postThanksgiving shopping excursion without harming their pocketbook. 1. Beware of special credit-card offers — Issuers are tempting consumers by offering incentives such as no-interest

balance transfers, extra perks by meeting certain spending levels, and increased cash back in specified categories. However, no deal is a good deal if you can’t afford it. Commit to spending no more than what you can repay in full when the bill arrives, regardless of how many bonuses are tacked on. 2. Know what you already owe — Review all existing debt obligations, tallying what you’ve already spent and committed to repay. This reality check may put a temporary damper on your holiday mood, but that’s better than digging the financial hole even deeper.

3. Create a plan — Knowing who you’re shopping for, what items you hope to find and, most importantly, how much you intend to spend is critical to a successful shopping day. Commit in advance to stick to your plan, and enlist an accountability partner if necessary, as it’s very easy to be caught up in the excitement of the moment and get off course. 4. Find the best deals at home — Shop from home before heading for the stores. Compare prices online, as well as local circulars for sales in your area. Be aware of time restrictions, as some

prices may only apply during certain time periods throughout the day. Once the actual shopping begins, going directly to the store that has your item at a good price will save you time, gas, money and frustration. 5. Remove all unnecessary cards from your wallet — Spreading purchases across multiple cards makes you feel as though you’re charging less and can trick you into overspending. Designate one card for holiday spending, and remove all others from your wallet. This will not only help you stay within your budget, but also will lessen the damage in case of loss or

theft. “It is important for consumers to shop with their head, not their heart,” said NFCC representative Gail Cunningham. “Preparing in advance

will help you stick to your budget, in spite of the decorations, carols and Santa himself beckoning you to spend.” (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Forget perfume, get grandma a grabber For the 133 million Americans living with chronic conditions, the best holiday gift is something that will make navigating the daily routine easier. Sweaters, pajamas, candy and perfume are all nice, traditional and thoughtful gifts for the compromised, but if you want to really show you care about their well-being, check out your local pharmacy for gifts they’ll use every day. “It’s very sad to see patients receive gifts of expensive perfume or cardigans that they’ll never enjoy because they can’t open the bottle or unbutton the buttons,” said Debbie Jansky of Home Health Services at Loyola Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Illinois. Here are her top 10 picks for holiday gifts that will be used and appreciated every day. • Medication Organizers ($1.50-$10): Help Grandma keep track of her pills. Available in all sizes (daily, weekly) and shapes, they will give the whole family

peace of mind that the right pill is being taken at the right time. • Pill Cutter ($3): Many pills and tablets need to be halved or quartered. These handy tools offer precise cutting with minimal effort. • Pill Punch ($8): Easily pushes an individual pill through sealed card packaging that those with arthritis have trouble manipulating. • ID Bracelet ($7 and up): Alerts medics to important medical information such as allergies to penicillin, congestive heart failure or diabetes. • Item Grabber ($28): This sturdy claw-like hand tool can be used to retrieve the box of crackers from the top shelf or a slipper that got kicked too far under the couch. • Adjustable cane ($27): This handsome black cane compresses to a 5-inch-long stick — much like a collapsible umbrella. Discreetly placed in a purse or coat

pocket, it can be quickly and easily assembled to provide support when needed. • Medicool ($45): Keep insulin or other medications cool and organized for easy application. • Rollator ($160): A luxurious walker with highquality wheels and brakes, with a basket for shopping and a handy bench to stop and rest. • Compression stockings ($12-$124): Helps increase blood circulation in legs and provide comfort. • Sock donner ($25): Makes putting on socks or compression hose a breeze, and helps to increase independence in dressing. • Accessible bathroom aids ($27-$100): Handheld water sprayers, toilet seat benches and bathtub safety rails may look insignificant in their box, but install them in the bathroom, and you’ll creat a safe haven that will be used regularly. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Communication Checklist Make sure you have at least one of the following in case there is a power failure: • Battery-powered radio (for listening to local emergency instructions). Have extra batteries. • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio receiver (for listening to National Weather Service broadcasts). See www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr for more information. • Find out how your community warns the public about severe weather: • Siren • Radio • TV • Listen to emergency broadcasts. • Know what winter storm warning terms mean: • Winter weather advisory: expect winter weather conditions to cause inconvenience and hazards. • Frost/freeze warning: expect below-freezing temperatures. • Winter storm watch: be alert; a storm is likely.

• Winter storm warning: take action; the storm is in or entering the area. • Blizzard warning: seek refuge immediately! Snow and strong winds, near-zero visibility, deep snow drifts, and life-threatening wind chill. Source: www.bt.cdc.gov

Winter Weather: Hypothermia When exposed to cold temperatures, your body begins to lose heat faster than it can be produced. Prolonged exposure to cold will eventually use up your body’s stored energy. The result is hypothermia, or abnormally low body temperature. Body temperature that is too low affects the brain, making the victim unable to think clearly or move well. This makes hypothermia particularly dangerous because a person may not know it is happening and won’t be able to do anything about it. Hypothermia is most likely at very cold temperatures, but it can occur even at cool temperatures (above 40°F) if a person becomes chilled from rain, sweat, or submersion in cold water. Victims of hypothermia are often (1) elderly people with inadequate food, clothing, or heating; (2) babies sleeping in cold bedrooms; (3) people who remain outdoors for long periods — the homeless, hikers, hunters, etc.; and (4) people who drink alco0 November 6, 201

hol or use illicit drugs. Recognizing hypothermia Warnings signs of hypothermia: Adults: • shivering, exhaustion • confusion, fumbling hands • memory loss, slurred speech • drowsiness Infants: • bright red, cold skin • very low energy What to Do If you notice any of these signs, take the person’s temperature. If it is below 95°, the situation is an emergency — get medical attention immediately. If medical care is not available, begin warming the person, as follows: • Get the victim into a warm room or shelter. • If the victim has on any wet clothing, remove it. • Warm the center of the body first — chest, neck, head, and groin — using an electric blanket, if available. Or use skinto-skin contact under loose, dry layers of blan-

kets, clothing, towels, or sheets. • Warm beverages can help increase the body temperature, but do not give alcoholic beverages. Do not try to give beverages to an unconscious person. • After body temperature has increased, keep the person dry and wrapped in a warm blanket, including the head and neck. • Get medical attention as soon as possible. A person with severe hypothermia may be unconscious and may not seem to have a pulse or to be breathing. In this case, handle the victim gently, and get emergency assistance immediately. Even if the victim appears dead, CPR should be provided. CPR should continue while the victim is being warmed, until the victim responds or medical aid becomes available. In some cases, hypothermia victims who appear to be dead can be successfully resuscitated. S o u r c e : www.bt.cdc.gov
