December 1, 2012 Hello Again, So you think all a cup or two of coffee can do for you is to give you a case of heartburn or keep you from a good night’s sleep? An article published May 17 in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that older adults who drink coffee may be less likely than non-drinkers to die from a number of causes. The 8-year-old study of over 403,000 men and women who drink coffee compared to those who drink little or none were less likely to die from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, diabetes, injuries, accidents, and infections. I, for one, can prove I haven’t died yet from too much or too little coffee but I am willing to testify that several times I became wide, bug-eyed awake at 2 in the morning with a sour stomach, wishing I had not had that last cup. Just think, if it wasn’t for coffee, Tums would go out of business, there wouldn’t be any late night T.V., and fewer with their bedroom reading lights on. Remember the old sailor’s warning: “Bright sky at night, sailors’ delight. Bright sky in the morning, sailors take warning.” It is obvious that on special occasions the good Lord includes us land-lubbers in his celestial messages. A few mornings ago the entire sky was painted in bright soft blue with streaks of color, not just in the east but everywhere. If an artist included that beautiful sky in his landscape painting, we would have doubts about its accuracy. There is only one who can paint the sky with such beauty. First thing in the morning I usually search the skies for a flock or gaggle of geese. I did not expect this morning to be any different but it was. The ground at 4:30 was covered with snow and it was too early for the geese. Winter has started in our beautiful upstate country. The leaves are gone, hillsides are barren, even most of the oak trees have shed their foliage having settled in for winter. A few times during the winter months we will see a little chipmunk or a squirrel out digging through the snow to recover one of their hidden pantries. How is it possible they can remember where their hidden treasures are buried? All winter we will continue to see deer. They too have to dig down through the snow to find their food. Back in the warm house, I tried in my mind to organize a trip down memory lane, like the little chippy or squirrel dig up a treasure here or there. One of my favorite magazines is Yankee, a New England magazine. Yankee is now a very professional appearing, full color, gloss publication. I started reading Yankee before glossy paper or colored pictures or ads, while it is still worth the price and the time to read. Somehow with its new beauty, something seems to be missing from the earlier years. Maybe with its new format utilizing glossy paper stock and full-colored pictures, a reader no longer has to paint his own mental pictures relying on imagination, which was part of the fun in reading. Let’s travel together down memory lane for a few minutes. The first home I can remember was on a little twenty to thirty acre farm about two miles from the village.

Dad drove a brown Model A Ford with black fenders. The road leading to our little farm was a common dirt path. Two or three times a year, the Middlefield town roadsmen would level out the worst of the ruts and rough spots with a large grader pulled behind a truck. Naturally the truck had a driver and the grader was operated by one man — his duty was to adjust the blades and rake to achieve the best results possible. They called it grading or honing the road. Every road in our area was dirt. I don’t believe we ever thought it should be a macadam or paved road. Dad’s Model A Ford was a step up in human comfort. Some of our neighbors still drove into the village with a horse and buggy or in the winter with a sleigh. The Model A produced a sound all of its own and the manifold heater barely kept the cabin comfortable, so we covered with blankets and wore heavy warm wool clothes — including long johns. Our new home — that is new to us — was in the village. It provided a more comfortable way of life. We had electricity and running water at the kitchen sink. No modern bathroom or toilet, yet. Dad hired a local plumber to put in a new complete bathroom. You know we thought we were big shots. Several of our farm friends visited my mother for a cup of hot tea with a slice of Irish soda bread and naturally to use the indoor- modern bathroom complete with a john. Boy, we Lee’s were living high on the hog. The street out front was still a dirt road. Why not? Weren’t all village streets dirt? Remember the famous movie, “On Golden Pond,” with Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn? That movie made the lonely sounding loon famous. A loon to us back in the hills was someone who was a patient at the looney bin down in Binghamton, or should have been. We had crows. What can you say about the lowly crow? But as they flew over our village, their caw seemed to resonate and fill the air with a pleasant, “this is home” sound. This morning I am reminded of the old country preacher who was accused of standing or leaning at the pulpit and rambling on until he finally thought of something to say. One Sunday, he said three times “in closing.” With that, a farmer said “That’s enough of those ‘in closings’ Parson. My wife’s dinner is burning up in the oven and I’ve got to let the cows out. Say ‘Amen.’” On the way to be with my wife in the hospital I stopped at a local diner or café for breakfast. A group of people from a local church were enjoying breakfast and reading from the Bible and I assume praying. It blessed me old Irish heart to see a group of U.S. citizens publicly worshipping God. God be with folks, and he will be with our nation as long as we have believers such as you.
Fred Lee and the Lee Family Less we forget to chuckle: Smith climbs to the top of Mt. Sinai to get close enough to talk to God. Looking up, he asks the Lord… “God, what does a million years mean to you?” The Lord replies, “A minute.” Smith asks, “And what does a million dollars mean to you?” The Lord replies, “A penny.” Smith asks, “Can I have a penny?” The Lord replies, “In a minute.”

Bridal Choosing and managing your bridesmaids and groomsmen Choosing and managing your bridesmaids and groomsmen can be just as stressful as planning the big day — that’s why we’re here to answer all of your wedding party questions! I have one too many bridesmaids. How can I work the extra friend into my wedding? Good news — you won’t have to invent a role for your friend. There’s no bridal law that says you have to have an equal number of male and female attendants. Single attendants of
either sex can walk up and down the aisle alone or in pairs, or a groomsman can accompany two women, one on each arm. As for the first dance, it's optional to have the entire wedding party pair off to join you and your husband for a spin. If you do want everyone on the dance floor, your solo maid can dance with her date or with another honored guest — your grandfather, a family friend or a favorite uncle. Source: www.y brides.com

Bridal Top 10 tips for brides 1. Starting six months prior to your wedding day, have a facial once a month to ensure a radiant complexion. 2. Adopt a healthy eating and regular exercise regime. Also, remember to drink lots of water and herbal teas. 3. If you are spray tanning for your wedding, trial the product or professional service first to be certain you are going to like the end result. A bad spray tan can look tragic, whereas a good one looks fabulous. 4. Do not neglect your hands and feet. Frequent manicures and pedicures are a must. Clean your engagement ring and any other jewellery you will be wearing. 5. Check your wedding gown fits perfectly prior to it leaving the store. Ensure all beading is sewn on securely, zips work and, if needs be, somewhere for you to hang your train so you are free to dance the night away. Another pearl of wisdom is to also try on your gown with the undergarments you intend to wear on your wedding day to ensure they fit perfectly under your dress. 6. If you are wearing a strapless gown,
take your bra off at least three hours before the photographer’s arrival on your wedding day. Bra strap marks stay embedded in the skin for a long time and look unsightly in photographs. 7. Delegate a trouble-shooter with good people and organisational skills to oversee and deal with any unexpected hitches on the day (touch wood). You do not need the added stress. 8. Confirm flowers, hair and make-up artists at least a month before your big day. 9. While getting ready do not forget to eat. Pack straws and organise bite-size portions of food to be available so eating and drinking will not spoil your make-up. 10. The beauty preparations before the wedding ceremony and celebrations are a very important part of your day. Enjoy all the pampering and attention. Have some Rescue Remedy (available from all good health food shops) on hand in case you need to calm nervous butterflies. Make sure you have a compact and lipstick for touchups. A fun-filled field trip for Little Friends Nursery School by Jessica Ferguson On Wednesday, Nov. 28, Little Friends Nursery School took a fun-filled field trip to the Canajoharie Fire Station where member Fritz Traudt gave a tour of all the different trucks the fire department has. The children had a blast seeing all the big trucks. After the tour, they were given a ride in an ambulance. They all enjoyed hearing the sirens and learning about the emergency equipment. After the ambulance ride, they took a stroll past the post office where they mailed a letter to Santa. Hopefully he knows how good we have all been! Their last and final stop was at The Village Restaurant where they all enjoyed an ice cream cone. Hazel, the owner, made everyone feel welcome.

Whatchamacallits The word “spur” has been used since very ancient times. It is recorded in English, circa 1390, as a generalized sense of "anything that urges on, stimulus." Spurs are still used in equestrian disciplines to refine the “riding aids” (commands) and to back up the “natural aids” (the leg, seat, hands and voice). Spurs are usually attached to a rider’s boots by a leather spur strap that goes over the arch of the foot and under the sole in front of the boot heel. There are also styles with no straps where the heel band is very tight and is wedged between the sole and heel of the boot. The tradition of having to “earn your spurs” reaches back to the beginning of the United States cavalry. When
These tools are from the collection of Willis “Skip” Barshied.
new troopers first arrived at a cavalry assignment, they were given a horse with a shaved tail. This led to the nickname "Shave Tail" for newly assigned, spur-less soldiers. Because the troopers were in need of extensive training, especially in the area of
swordsmanship from atop a horse, they were not allowed to wear spurs because this would only serve to compound their problems. Only when they were able to prove their ability to perform with their horse and saber were they awarded spurs.

Join us and “Ring the Bell” for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle To all Upper Montgomery County residents: To fulfill our goal of “Doing The Most Good” and to share the joys of caring and sharing, the Salvation Army’s traditional Red Kettle drive has been an integral part of the Christmas scene since 1891. Donations made to the Red Kettle aid needy families, seniors, and the homeless by providing Christmas dinners, winter clothing, and toys as well as continuing year round with the basic necessities of food, clothing and medications. 90 percent of funds gathered will be used to provide emergency assistance to residents right in our area. The Upper Montgomery County Salvation Army Service Units of Canajoharie, Fort Plain and St. Johnsville have a long history of successful Red Kettle Campaigns. The Red Kettle tradition will continue and with the support of several new local businesses who are generously hosting a Red
Kettle. Please help your favorite merchant raise the most to support the Salvation Army Red Kettle Christmas Campaign. The merchant’s Red Kettle who raises the most will receive a plaque and special recognition. And… you’ll be doing the most good! Perhaps you have always been one who found it in your heart to donate to the Red Kettle, and are willing and able to take your generosity one step further by giving two hours of your time to ring the bell and help us gather much needed donations. If you can join in the treasured tradition or wish to make a financial donation, please call one of us. We hope when you see the Red Kettle, you will be able to help fill the kettles and feel the joy of caring and sharing. Collecting by Larry Cox Life Magazines Q: I have several Life magazines from the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s. How do I sell them? — Lorraine, Surprise, AZ A: Life magazines are not as rare as you might think. Even though certain issues are more desirable than others, most are currently selling for about $10 each. Collectors are especially interested in the Beatles, Elvis and Marilyn Monroe covers. To sell your magazines, you might contact the Brass Armadillo antique mall, 12419 N. 28th Drive, Phoenix, AZ 85029, to see if there is any interest. Q: At a recent auction I purchased four large boxes of books, many from the early years of the past century. I suspect I might have a few that are quite valuable. How can I find out without hiring an appraiser? — Ted, St. Charles, MO A : G o t o www.abe.com. Type in the name and author of a book, and a list of dealers offering that book for sale will appear on your computer. The edition of a book is extremely important. For example, the first printing of Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird”
often sells for $25,000 and more; later editions for much less. As with most collectibles, condition also is an important factor. Q: I purchased a Thomas Jefferson bowl in Patriot Red slag by Fenton glass. The bowl with lid was limited to 3,600 pieces in red in 1975, with the same amount in a different color the following year, and then the mold destroyed. I cannot find this piece in any of the Fenton price guides. — Sandra, Granite City, IL A: Your piece is valued at $135 in Warman’s Fenton Glass: Identification & Price Guide by Mark F. Moran. Q: I have a Mountain Dew green glass soda-pop bottle in excellent shape. I think it is from the 1970s. Any value? — David, Santa Monica, CA A: The original formula for Mountain Dew was developed by PepsiCo during the 1940s. The drink was first marketed in Virginia and Tennessee. In 1988, diet Mountain Dew was available. According to several collectors I contacted, your bottle is probably worth in the $5 to $10 range. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Local bookstore bucks the big-box trend: Holland Patent resident opens independent bookshop featuring automotive books and automobilia HOLLAND PATENT, NY — Award-winning automotive historian and writer Mark Theobald’s lifelong passion for cars has led him to establish Adirondack Motorbooks & Collectibles, an independent bookstore and hobby shop focusing on automotive history and die-cast motor vehicles in Holland Patent, NY. Good car books and die-cast replicas are harder to find in recent years, according to Theobald. “I fill the gap the bigbox stores left. A decade ago, Borders and Barnes & Noble had respectable automotive book sections and Kay-Bee Toys and Toys ‘R’ Us had aisle upon aisle of die-cast models. Today the two national book retailers rarely stock more than a single shelf of automotive titles while the remaining toystore chain offers an embarrassingly small selection of die-cast trucks and automobiles.” Although the big box stores’ automotive inventory has all but vanished, the nation’s car lovers remain as numerous as ever. According to Theobald, “The car-lovers didn’t go away; the stores just replaced the automobiles with video games and related books and merchandise.” Despite that fact, he notes, both young and old continue to crave cars. Pixar’s movie Cars introduced a new generation to the appeal of vintage motorcars and the excitement of racing. Adirondack Motorbooks offers all the classic Cars characters, and beyond: “When your car curiosity wakes up, you always want to know more. Kids and adults can find it here.” Located on State Route 365, the 2000-sq.ft store stocks 4,000 new, used and rare books, 5,000 back-date magazines and 6000 die-cast replicas in various scales and prices. While the emphasis is
on trucks and automobiles, he also carries books and replicas of construction equipment, military vehicles, farm machinery and motorcycles. Motorsports enthusiast will discover an entire room filled with diecast replicas of the region’s most popular DIRT modifieds, World of Outlaws sprint cars and NASCAR stock cars. Diehard fans will be amazed at the store’s selection of Winston and Sprint Cup books, caps, T-shirts and jackets. Included is a spacious coffee bar where people who enjoy and appreciate automobiles can sit and enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee with fellow auto aficionados. First-time visitors will also receive a FREE automotive magazine valued at $3-$6. Plans for the coming year include regular weekend cruise-ins and auto club events. Theobald invites local clubs to call 315-865-5503 to reserve a spot for the upcoming summer series, which will be featured on carshownews.com. The store, located in the center of Holland Patent, was formerly Jweid’s Market. Five years ago, Theobald purchased the building, fully stocked with dry goods and decades-old shelves and coolers. He donated the contents to local charities, and gave the refrigerators, scales and store fixtures to anyone who would take them away. He spent three years gutting and rebuilding the structure after which he constructed the store’s specialized bookcases, spending almost a year organizing the store’s merchandise for the Dec. 1 opening. “People around here were ready for me to open years before I was ready,” he remarked. The bookshop in Holland Patent is not Theobald’s first. Before moving to the Mohawk Valley he operated a similar
operation, Motor Library, in Vermont’s Green Mountains. During his career in the wholesale automobile business Theobald developed a string of auto-related websites devoted to such diverse subjects as automotive safety (crashtest.com), auto shows (carshownews.com) and autobuying (safecarguide.com). He is proudest of coachbuilt.com, an on-line encyclopedia detailing the history of America’s automotive body builders, some located in the Mohawk Valley. At this year’s Antique Automobile Club of America’s Fall Meet in Hershey, PA, Theobald’s website was awarded the Society of Automotive Historians’ E.P. Ingersoll Award, which honors the year’s best presentation of automotive history using media other than print. “I established the Holland Patent bookshop in order to provide local residents a place where they can inspect prospective purchases in person, unlike my competition who sell and display their merchandise exclusively through the internet. I hope local auto enthusiasts take advantage of the hands-on buying experience that Adirondack Motorbooks & Collectibles offers and trust they’ll get the same enjoyment from the automotive hobby as I do,” said Theobald. Starting Wednesday Dec. 1, Adirondack Motorbooks will be open daily between noon and 6 p.m. The automotive book store, toy and hobby shop is located at 9554 Main St, State Route 365, Holland Patent, NY, directly across the street from Grande’s Pizzeria and the Holland Patent Pharmacy. The store is wheelchair accessible and parking for 20 cars is available in front of and behind the building.

Did you know? Home improvement projects no longer need to be halted due to missing tools or misplaced measurements. Thanks to advancements in mobile phone technology, homeowners can now keep projects on schedule thanks to a host of apps that
make it possible for even the most forgetful do-it-yourselfer to complete projects on time. Carpentry apps provide rulers, protractors, and a host of other features that can help with projects big and small, be it hanging pictures in the family room or
completing a molding project. Homeowners can also make the most of sizing apps that allow them to enter the square footage of their homes or individual rooms and compare costs of supplies and materials. Those tackling painting projects can
take advantage of painting palette apps that make it easy to match colors and compare colors for interior or even exterior projects. Drywall calculator apps enable homeowners tackling the often troublesome task of measuring drywall to finish the project much more quickly and with significantly less stress.

Shopping for a home • Know your housing priorities, including the type of structure, size, location, and community services that are important to you. • Decide whether you want to use the services of a realtor. Realtors are familiar with the housing market and can assist you in finding
the house that meets your needs. The seller generally pays the realtor’s commission to help sell the property, which means that the realtor will try to get the best sales price and terms for the seller. To get the best outcome for yourself, you may want to hire your own realtor to represent
Add value to your home (NAPSA) — When you want to add value to your home, a few easy remodeling tips can help you get the most out of the money you spend on renovations. • An Updated Kitchen — Great rooms are becoming more popular, so consider joining the dining room with the kitchen to get added living space in the room that is used most often. This change can improve a home’s appeal entirely. • Storage Space — A stuffy old attic or basement that hasn’t
been cleaned out in years is a waste of valuable space. Start by clearing out your storage areas and organizing their contents. • Window Shutters — One of the best ways to add value is at the window. • Modern Bathrooms — Updating simple fixtures, such as a faucet or sink, or adding a bath, will significantly increase value as well as add style. For more information, visit www.hunterdouglas.com or call 800-274-2985.
your interests as the buyer. • Know housing market trends before you start looking for a home. In a buyer’s market, there are a lot of homes for sale, with relatively few buyers, so sellers have to offer potential buyers additional incentives. In a seller’s market, there are
a lot of buyers and relatively few homes, so sellers are likely to drive a hard bargain, and the home you want may be sold before you have a chance to make the offer. Source: www. extension.org
Buying and saving tips (NAPSA) — It may come as a surprise to some, but real estate experts report that in many places it can be less expensive to buy a home than to rent one. Despite record affordability conditions, however, some people still face certain obstacles in their path to homeownership. Explains National Association of Realtors® President Moe Veissi, “To achieve the dream, it’s important to be prepared for certain challenges in the marketplace.” Five tips may help: • Get your credit in order and collect all financial paperwork.
Securing a mortgage remains one of the biggest hurdles in home buying. • Prepare for the possibility of multiple offers, particularly in areas where inventory is tight. • If you’re considering a short sale or foreclosed home, hire a professional who has experience in those areas. • Work with a Realtor®, a member of the National Association of Realtor. Realtors can provide the advantage buyers need to succeed in today’s market. • Learn more at www.houselogic.com.

Preparing for winter weather travel Has your car, van, or pickup truck had a vehicle checkup lately? Now is the time to make sure your automobile can survive the coming winter weather. Check the tires, battery and brakes, along with the heating and defrosting system. Change the antifreeze, if needed, to protect the engine and radiator from freezing up in the cold temperatures that will be with us this
winter. When a snow storm or ice storm is expected to affect any part of your travel route, here is an important question to ask yourself: Is the need to make the trip a matter of life or death? If the answer is no, then don’t go. Keep in mind that the weather may be okay in your town, but hazardous winter driving conditions could exist only a few
miles away. Remember, a blizzard or dangerous ice storm can cause the trip itself to become a life threatening situation. Nearly 60 people die in the United States each year, hundreds more are injured, and tens of thousands are stranded on the side of the road due to winter storms and bitterly cold temperatures. Did you know? Many Christmas traditions are older than some celebrants might think. The tradition of lighting up a Christmas tree, for example, dates back to the days before Christmas lights. Before electric-powered twinkle lights were invented and even before electricity was discovered, people used actual candles to adorn the Christmas tree. As one can imagine, having an open flame next to a dried-out tree made for some fast fires. That’s why it was customary to keep a bucket of water next to the tree as well. As if fire wasn’t enough, the tinsel used to decorate trees was made from strips of silver and even lead — something that is now known to be a health hazard to adults and children alike. Although we’ve come a long way from candles and lead, trees that are overly dry paired with lights that have frayed wires can just as easily lead to fires. Plus, plastic tinsel can be a choking hazard for children and pets. One Christmas staple that has lost its status as a safety hazard is the poinsettia plant. Poinsettias are a tropical plant that have become a fixture during the Christmas season. It has long been thought that poinsettias are poisonous to people and animals. While there is some toxicity to the plant, it would require the ingestion of hundreds of leaves to get a toxic dose of a plant’s poison. Ingestion may simply cause a case of vomiting or diarrhea instead. But poinsettia leaves are said to have an unpleasant taste, so one bite and most children and animals will probably turn away. Perhaps one of the biggest hazards come Christmas — both then and now — is not having enough turkey or eggnog to go around for holiday guests!
Jewelry can make holidays sparkle
by Miss Bijoux No red or green gemstone is prescribed for the Christmas season, but if you are committed to making a holiday statement with jewelry, here are a few suggestions: • Establish your own signature holiday look by wearing the same poinsettia, Christmas tree or ornament brooch every day from Dec. 1 through Christmas. This will become a family tradition — with you as the star. And the brooch will acquire the patina and status of aging, just as you do. • An inexpensive green stone is peridot, which is mined in the United States. It is the birthstone of August, and looks great with green or brown eyes. Peridot is brilliant, but soft, so pierced earrings would be nice. • Two red stones are reasonably priced — pyrope or almandine garnet, and pink tourmaline (also known as
rubellite). Have your jeweler show you the reddest pyrope or almandine that he can find — you want to avoid the brownish-tinged pyrope garnet. Pink tourmaline is a reddish-pink and very lovely for a ring. • A perfect holiday green-red combination does exist: emerald and ruby stones. A bracelet with these precious stones set in gold or gold surrounded by white (champleve) enamel is festive incarnate. • Create a festive look by affixing an old rhinestone brooch to a black velvet ribbon and tying it around your neck for a great choker. (This is for women with discernible, attractive necks only.) • Dress up your Christmas tree with large, gaudy old rhinestone brooches hung by red satin ribbons. • Hats are a cool look for the winter for those who to live in an area with seasons. So take that old brooch
and pin it on a beret or felt hat for a festive look. • Trying to create a Christmas gift? Take apart all of your really disposable, old, junky, rhinestone jewelry and glue the parts or large stones (individual simulated pearls look great) in the shape of a Christmas tree onto a velvet-covered cardboard rectangle. Frame same, and the lucky recipient has a decoration for a lifetime of Christmases. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Give your car a brake (NAPSA) — If you’re like most motorists, you’re concerned about safety. In fact, research shows that vehicle safety is a top motivator for most motorists when it comes to vehicle maintenance and the brake system is at the top of the vehicle safety checklist. “Brakes are a normal wear item for any car and eventually they’re going to need to be replaced for both performance and safety reasons,” explained Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “A properly operating brake system helps ensure safe vehicle operation and control under a variety of conditions. However, many motorists are unaware of the signs and symptoms that their brake system may need maintenance or repair.” What to look for It’s important to be alert and recognize the warning signs of brake trouble. If your car is pulling to the left or right, or if you hear odd noises when you apply the brakes, you should inspect your brakes. Other warning signs include an illuminated brake warning light, brake grab-
bing, low pedal feel, vibration, hard pedal feel and squealing. What to do For routine maintenance, check your vehicle’s braking system at least once a year. A thorough inspection should include brake lining wear, brake fluid level, rotor thickness, condition of hoses and brake lines, brake and dash warning lights, as well as taking the car for a test-drive to detect other potential brake system problems. What not to do Several factors that affect brake wear include driving habits, operating conditions, vehicle type and the quality of the brake lining material. “Never put off routine brake inspections or any needed repair, such as letting the brakes get to the ‘metal-to-metal’ point, which can be potentially dangerous and lead to a more costly repair bill,” White added. “If you haven’t checked your brakes in the past year, it’s a great time to ‘give your car a brake’ and make sure it’s in safe working condition.” For a “Car Care Guide” or more information, visit www.carcare.org.
Seven ways to save on auto insurance (NAPSA) — What you pay for your auto insurance can vary by hundreds of dollars, depending on what type of car you drive, your accident history and the insurance company that provides the policy. To save money on your auto insurance policy, keep these seven tips in mind: 1. Ask about discounts. You may qualify for one if you haven’t had any accidents or moving violations for several years. If you drive a lower than average number of miles a year, you may qualify for low mileage discounts. Ask your insurance agent about discounts for: • Antitheft devices • Defensive driving courses • Long-time customers • Insuring more than one car • No accidents in three years • No moving violations in three years • Student drivers with good grades. 2. Get multiple quotes. Rates can vary greatly and they change often. Review your coverage at least annually. 3. Reduce coverage on older cars. Consider dropping collision or comprehensive coverage
on older cars. If the car is worth less than 10 times the annual premium, buying coverage may not be cost-effective. You can look up the value of your car at Kelley Blue Book, www.kbb.com. 4. Ask for a higher deductible. Deducti-bles are what you pay out before your insurance kicks in. By getting higher ones, you can lower your costs substantially. Before choosing a higher deductible, however, set aside enough money to pay for needed repairs. 5. Bundle your insurance. You can often get a break if you buy two or more types of insurance from the same provider, such as auto and homeowners. You may also get a discount if you have more than one vehicle in-
sured with the same company. 6. Compare costs. Some companies offer a discount if you drive a hybrid or low-profile car. Before you buy a new or used car, check into the insurance costs. 7. Maintain a good credit record. Most insurers factor credit into pricing auto insurance policies. To protect your credit standing, pay your bills on time, don’t get more credit than you need and keep your credit balances as low as possible. Check your credit record regularly and have any errors corrected promptly. V i s i t www.wellsfargo.com/insurance to learn more.
