Hello Again, December 8, 2012 I cannot help wondering if all our so-called representatives in Washington were silent about what they do not know about the national health program – if the silence would become unbearable. Can you actually believe they – our representatives – have passed into law a national health program which even the leader of the Senate admitted she did not know anything about? A bill or law that may destroy millions of small business employers and cause the greatest job loss in the history of the free world. You could ask – Fred, aren’t you jumping off the deep end? My only answer is, after employing people for over fifty years, I am scared silly. Jesus’ closing words on the cross keeps coming to mind, “Father forgive them for they do not know what they do.” They, our government body – before the vote – admitted on national TV that they did not know what they were voting for. Can you imagine becoming a member of a jury trial and voting on whether the accused lives or dies and not knowing anything about the case? Some believe this health program has the ability to totally destroy our medical system and our government. Our representatives were on that jury and they actually voted for the program, all while admitting they did not even know what it said. The more I read old newspapers and magazines, the stronger the old saying, “There is nothing new under the sun,” proves to be true. The following headline on the front page of a January 1971 newspaper fortifies the point. “Huge Welfare Growth Bringing Bankruptcy,” under a sub-head, “States facing money problems as rates jump.” To arrive at the point which I want to make, a question should first be answered. When you get down to shelling out government bucks, is there a difference between welfare and all of the thousands of programs both our state and federal government financially support? My mother and father came to this country because they believed America offered great opportunities. An ambitious, conservative couple would receive wonderful opportunities. They could earn and own their own home, car, and enjoy a wonderful enriched way of life, including freedom to worship God in a manner which they believed. All they asked for was the opportunity to work hard, conserve their earnings, and raise a family while prospering due to their own labor. Now what is happening in this land of religious freedom? Non-believers, those who claim to be atheist, are attempting to force their non-belief on those who do believe, claiming their rights to not believe are infringed upon. The governor of a nearby state has refused to allow a large Christmas tree to be called a “Christmas Tree,” but it will be called, “The Holiday Tree.”

I can only think his own lights must be half burned out. Should the Christian-believing electorate send him a message to charge up his batteries or unplug his lead cord at the next election? We had two politicians who voted for same-sex marriage here in New York State. Their lead cords were unplugged at election time which is proof that more voters chose to be moral and not political beasts. The three R’s of a socialist government: This is ours; That is ours; Everything is ours. To this I add, if anything is left after taking all your hard-earned money, they may give a little bit of it back – naturally with additional tax due, with less given back next year. I have always liked rabbit dogs more than house pets. You know - one that will get out and hunt for food rather than sit on his fanny and howl. Remember Ripley’s Believe It Or Not? This week the Mohawk River and the valley between Canajoharie and Palatine Bridge had its own “Believe It If You Can.” Several people witnessed this once-in-a-lifetime event. The sky, riverbanks, and the Mohawk River were actually smothered with white snow geese. This is not blarney. At least 10,000 or more beautiful white snow geese decided to pay us a visit. If I’m wrong about the 10,000, maybe there were 12,000 or more. These were white snow geese, not the usual dark Canadian geese which we usually see. Why is it when you need a camera with an extra powerful lens, you can’t find one and yet when you need a lawyer you can always find one? It’s been thought that a bank is an institution that lends money to those who don’t need it and a lawyer is a learned gentleman who rescues your estate from your enemies and keeps it for himself. Years and years ago it was said that Cicero proclaimed, “We are in bondage to the law in order that we may be free.” Now it appears we are allowing our lawmakers to steal our freedom claiming it is the great correct change. My question is, when a society gives its freedom away, how can it get it back? Have you ever noticed when trouble enters our life – we turn to God claiming we trust him? I’m reminded of a clergyman who fell out of an airplane and landed safely on a flag pole sticking out of the side, high up on the Empire State Building. Still able to mumble, he prayed to God for help. Finally he asked, “God can you hear me?” God answered, “Yes, but do you trust me?” “Yes,” the preacher said. Then the Lord said, “Let go of the flag pole.” With that the preacher asked, “Can anyone else hear me?” There is a proven way to gather strength and comfort when life dishes out what seems to be too many troubles. Turn to God in prayerful thanks for all the great advantages we have in life. Spend real time in thankful prayer and like the drifting clouds above, trouble will seem to float away and be replaced with strength. Especially at this Christ-time, smile and say hello to your neighbor. If he asks you to go to church with him and his family, try it – God will smile and so will you. Fred Lee and the Lee Family

Whatchamacallits These old pie crimpers are made of wood (bottom) and brass (top). Despite the name, pie crimpers are not solely used for pies. This kitchen utensil also cuts other pastry doughs and pastas as they are being formed and prepared for baking. Many English bakers refer to crimpers as “jaggers.” Modern versions of the tool can consist of a single wheel or two small wheels that are wooden or metal (stainless steel or zinc alloy), attached to a handle. One wheel has a straight edge for scoring, marking, and straight cutting the dough. The second wheel has a fluted edge to create patterned edges for a decorative appearance when cutting folded pastries, lattice pie and pastry strips, pasta, lasagna, ravioli, pizza, biscuit crack-

ers, or other similar baked items. There is some debate to the necessity of pie crimpers. Some chefs cannot live with-

out them, others believe that the deftness of one’s fingers does a better decorative job than these tools can accomplish.

Collecting by Larry Cox Rookwood vase Q: While attending a church sale in Iowa earlier this year, I spotted a Rookwood vase, which I bought for $100. After returning to my home in Texas, I asked an antiques dealer if he could identify it for me. He claims it is the work of Ed Diers, one of his poppy patterns executed on a vellum flaring vase. He could not give me an idea of its value, and that is why I am writing you. — Betty, College Station, Texas A: You got quite a deal. One of the better references for this type of ceramics is “Warman’s Rookwood Pottery: Identification

and Price Guide” by Denise Rago and Jonathan Claney (Krause Publications). According to this reference, your vase was made in about 1927, and in mint condition is valued in the $4,000 to $6,000 range. A word of caution: Reproductions of Rookwood have popped up at flea markets and in shops in recent years, the work of wicked Asian reproduction elves who never, ever rest. To make certain you purchased the real deal, a certified appraisal should be next on your shopping list. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Pellet fuel

Pellet fuel is normally sold in 40-pound (18-kg) bags at about $3 to $4 each or about $120 to $200 a ton. You can estimate how much fuel you will need for a heating season by noting that one ton of pellets is equivalent to approximately 1.5 cords of firewood. Most homeowners who use a pellet appliance as a main source of heat use two to three tons of pellet fuel per year. Pellet fuel appliances are often less expensive to operate than electric resistance heating and propane-fueled appliances. Most pellet fuels have a 5 to 10 percent moisture content. Well-seasoned firewood is usually

around 20 percent. Some pellets contain either petroleum or non-petroleum lignin used as a lubricant in the pellet production process, though most contain no additives. Pellets made from agricultural waste contain more ash, but they may produce more heat than pellets made from wood. The Pellet Fuels Institute (PFI) maintains National Residential Pellet Fuel Standards, although fuel quality certification is the responsibility of the pellet manufacturer. Under the standards, there are two pellet fuel grades: premium and standard. The only difference between grades is in the inorganic ash content: premium should be less than 1

percent, and standard less than 3 percent. Premium is usually made of core wood (not bark). There are five fuel characteristics prescribed for both grades: 1. Bulk density per cubic foot (0.028 cubic meters) shall not be less than 40 pounds (18 kg) 2. The diameter shall be 1/4 to 5/16 inch (635-794 mm) 3. Maximum length shall be 1 and 1/2 inches (254-127 mm) 4. Fines (dust) of not more than 0.5% by weight shall pass through a 1/8 inch (317.5 mm) screen 5. Sodium content shall be less than 300 parts per million (ppm). You can check pellet fuel quality by inspecting the bag for

excessive dirt and dust. (Dirt can form clinkers in the stove.) There should be less than one half of a cup of dust at the bottom of a 40-pound (18-kg) bag. Pellet stoves designed for low-ash (typically top-fed stoves) tend to operate poorly when used with pellets of a higher ash content. Many pellet appliance manufacturers are redesigning their products to burn pellets with varying ash contents. Most pellet fuel appliance dealers either maintain a supply of pellets or recommend a supplier. You may also check the local telephone listings under “Fuel” or “Pellet Fuel,” or inquire at a local tree nursery or at home and garden supply stores.

Tips from NYSERDA for saving energy this fall As temperatures drop, it’s time to consider ways to reduce your energy bills in the coming months. A comprehensive home energy assessment by a contractor accredited by the Building Performance Institute (BPI) is a valuable way to discover the most effective ways to save energy and cut costs. For extra savings, tackle some easy do-it-yourself projects recommended by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). Welcome fall with a free comprehensive home energy assessment. • Instead of merely

getting your furnace or boiler tuned, have an energy efficiency expert conduct a comprehensive home energy assessment and recommend the best ways to reduce energy waste and improve the comfort of your home. The audit is free for most New Yorkers. • To help pay for energy improvements, take advantage of NYSERDA’s low-interest loans – including payment through your utility bills – and cash-back incentives. • Call 877-NYSMART or visit www.nyserda.ny.gov/ home-performance to get started. Make a change that

saves more than $200 on your energy bill without sacrificing comfort. • Install and properly use a programmable thermostat and save up to $200 on energy costs. A programmable thermostat offers pre-programmed and customized settings to regulate your home's temperature when you are home, asleep or away. While remembering to adjust your home's temperature manually might be a challenge, a programmable thermostat can help you “set it and forget it.” Make sure to buy ENERGY STAR qualified light bulbs as

the days get shorter and night creeps in earlier. • Consider the fact that lighting accounts for approximately 12 percent of the average household’s energy bill. • Check out the variety of ENERGY STAR qualified bulbs; they come in a wide variety of shapes and styles for every application. • Offset initial costs with lifetime savings. ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs can be found for as low as $1.50 and can save about $70 or more in energy cost per bulb over their lifetime.

Ten ways to beat holiday stress by Timothy J. O’Brien, MS, http://hyperstress.com Whether your holiday stress is caused by Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or New Year’s Eve, there are ways to ease the pressure so you can actually enjoy the holiday. Here are 10 tips for Happier Holidays. (P.S. They also work all year round).

1. Hide: It works nearly every time. If you need a little break, admit it and seek refuge. Go to a private place and take a few long deep breaths and sing your favorite holiday tune to regroup. 2. Rehearse the worst, then, if it happens, you’ve already made advance preparations. And since the worst seldom happens, you can make a game out of what does. 3. Get organized early.

List all your holiday chores: cards if you send them, decorating the house, gifts, special cooking, wrapping, mailing and shopping. Just listing everything you have to do will help you to feel less harried. Set a schedule, and do a little every day. Check items off your list as you complete them. This will show you

your progress. Address a card or two per day. Wrap a present while you watch a favorite TV show. Remember, procrastination is the real “Grinch” who stole Christmas. 4. Reinstate the draft; get everyone in the house to help. Share the fun, share the duties. Children, too ... just confine them to one room so if they make a mess you only have one room to redecorate come spring.

5. Use modern innovations to make your traditions easier. Say you have five dozen cookies to send in with Johnny or Mary for the school party. Throw away the “from scratch” recipe. Buy a tube of ready mix cookie dough, and cook them two minutes less than the directions say (it makes them chewy). Put some sprinkles on the cookies and swear the children to secrecy. This creates little mess and is fast. 6. Moderation, and “this too will pass.” No matter what we think to the contrary, there will only be 31 days in December this year. If things get rough, start the count down. Look forward to something in January, like December being over. Use moderation in eating, drinking and spending. You don’t want a head, belt or debt hangover. 7. Empathy works when you think the world is out to get you. Look around. There are undoubtedly others who are worse off. If you see someone struggling, offer to help, if appropriate. Focus on what you do have, and count your blessings. Remember, love is free to share. And, it comes in unlimited supply to those who use it.

8. QTIP: The next time you’re in a holiday traffic jam, stuck in a slow checkout line, or your online order doesn’t go through, remember QTIP, and quit taking it personally. The checkout line isn’t there to drive you crazy. The stoplight is not a part of a plan to ruin your day. Don’t get upset about what is beyond your control. 9. Contrarian shoppers start early and end early. Take an early lunch and

shop on off-days at the mall. Shop online, the prices are often good, and many online stores now include free shipping. What can’t you find at Amazon? Have a detailed list of gifts with alternates if your first choice isn’t available. Consider shopping year round for the holidays. Often, summer sales mean better gifts at a lower price next year. 10. The Chemistry of Joy will see you through. There is an actual chem-

istry of joy and happiness that occurs within us. It is a chemical reaction caused by signals our brain gives to our autonomic nervous system. A positive, happy outlook triggers immune strengthening responses in our body. Laugh, enjoy humor, sing and think about the joy you give to others and the joy that others give you. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

This is a hammer by Samantha Mazzotta Essential gifts for do-it-yourselfers It’s that time of year again, when you’ve got to think of gifts for friends and family that will be appreciated. Luckily, it’s easy to pick out gifts for the do-it-yourselfers. Most DIYers will outright tell you what they need, or you can casually survey their workspace to see what is not there. If you’re a DIYer who really wants something, here are a few things you can drop a hint about: • Power tools: The key word with handheld power tools is “rechargeable.” While corded power tools provide a consistent flow of electricity and reliable power, cordless drills are DIYers’ go-to standard

because they can simply pull them off the charger and use them anywhere, no need to look for an outlet or extension cord. Prices: $40 to $249 • Portability: Most DIYers have more than one toolbox and, as their tool collection grows, they’re always on the lookout for one that meets their carry-around needs. Consider tucking a spare tool belt and some basic staples like a tape measure and screwdriver set into a durable toolbox. Prices: $8 to $90 • Spares: While it’s impossible to have an extra of everything, extra screws, nuts, bolts, nails and other hardware are essential to have around. Look for combination kits like picture hanger as-

sortments, specialty nail and screw sizes, and cabinet and drawer hardware like handles and hinges for emergency repairs. • Cleanup: A wet/dry vacuum is an important and versatile part of any workshop. If your DIYer doesn’t have one of these yet, there are affordable models available. Prices: $49 to $400. HOME TIP: “I never ask my husband directly what tools or items he wants for Christmas. Instead, I ask him about the project he’s working on. There’s always some tool or part he’s missing; I just note it down and buy it for him.” — Tara L., Richmond, VA (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.
