December 22, 2012 Hello Again, Often it’s good to wander off somewhere to enjoy a think-about. You know — find a quiet scenic spot just to sit there and think. A private time to communicate with your own thoughts. A one-only chat. A think-about. During my last think-about, I asked. “Why have you not pushed harder on the Palatine Business Corridor?” You know it’s a great idea, a wonderful dream and this New York area truly needs several permanent places of employment. Question after question popped up. “Don’t you care enough about your family, friends, neighbors and fellow business owners?” “Yes, I certainly do care.” “Then why haven’t you moved ahead with the Palatine Corridor Business Dream? Are you afraid of failure, or what?” “Well, in defense,” I answered, “I suppose the part of facing failure does play a part in the procrastination and lack of affirmative action.” More thought! “How can you possibly fail? Whatever you get started, regardless of size, would have to be a step in the right direction. So stop crying wolf and get off your butt and start some action, activity, attempt something. Anything will prove to be better than no attempt at all, and if you don’t try to marshal this area into action - then you will have failed, and on your tombstone it will read - ‘He didn’t even try.’” After that little mental trip, I realized I have been sitting on a shortsighted stool wearing a nightcap. The final question was, “Do you think God put you here in the Mohawk Valley because he needed someone to cry wolf, or yell the sky is falling in?” Certainly the good Lord or your neighbors, friends, and business associates do not need or want more procrastination. You know when I listen to that little voice inside I feel like telling him off, but what do you do when the voice makes sense? The simple fact is - this area of upstate New York could become the envy of the American continent - that’s taking in all of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. To list a few of the natural advantages alone, we have the grand tree-covered hills, the beautiful rivers, lakes, streams, farm land, wonderful villages, small cities, good roads, a major expressway, a huge railroad. Within a 50-mile radius of the Palatine Corridor, over 3,500,000 people live and the Thomas E. Dewey Thruway has over 70,000 cars, campers, motor homes, and trucks pass by every day. Areas and villages such as Cooperstown, NY, Frankenmuth, MI, Saratoga Springs, NY, Branson, MO, and Lancaster County, PA, draw people from thousands of miles - not just 50. Someday the Palatine Corridor will also. When we put a proper plan in action, they will come. “If we build it, they will come.” According to the Associated Press, gas prices will soon drop to the lowest price of the past year. Now that’s a nice thought, isn’t it? Until you learn that the price we New Yorkers pay is the second highest in the entire United States. Hawaii, tucked way out in the Pacific Ocean, pays more based on reduced volume of sales and distance from the refineries. Why is our price of gas the highest on the U.S. mainland? It is because New York State has the largest government. A huge percentage of our gas price is taxes.

History has proven: “The greater the freedom, the greater the wealth; the greater the government, the greater the poverty.” I noticed that my wife has started reading the expiration date on every food item we have in our cupboards and every item before purchasing at the grocery. Yesterday she was reading over our marriage license. Happiness and contentment is a product of our ability to control and guide our thoughts. As youngsters we sang Christmas messages and now years later they still fill our minds and hearts with comfort and joy. Read the words. Hum or sing along. They will keep Christmas alive. ··· I’m dreaming of a white Christmas Just like the ones I used to know Where the treetops glisten And children listen To hear sleigh bells in the snow I’m dreaming of a white Christmas With every Christmas card I write May your days be merry and bright And may all your Christmases be white ··· Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace! Sleep in heavenly peace! Silent night! Holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight Glories stream from heaven afar Heavenly hosts sing Hallelujuah Christ the Savior is born! Christ the Savior is born! ··· O Little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep, the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth, the everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years, are met in thee tonight. O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray! Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels, the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel! ··· From the Lee Family and all of the Lee Publications’ associates, we wish you a Merry Christmas. Fred Lee and the Lee Family

by Samantha Mazzotta Fireplace basics Q: This winter will be the first time we will use our new fireplace. Can you give us some advice on safely lighting a fire? — Charlie L., Oviedo, FL A: Sure can! Your request comes at the perfect time, as cold weather sets in for most of the country. Here are step-bystep instructions for lighting a fire safely and successfully. If you own a gas-lit fireplace, skip Steps 3 and 5. 1. Open the damper and visually inspect

This is a hammer the firebox and flue to ensure that they are clear. 2. Stack firewood in the center of the fireplace, being careful not to place the logs too close together. The wood stack should take up no more than one-third of the space in the fireplace. 3. Place loosely rolled newspaper in the gaps created by the wood stack, on all three sides. (Use newspaper only — avoid magazines or color inserts.) 4. Preheat the flue. Carefully light a rolled piece of newspaper
Remember, if Christmas isn’t found in your heart, you won't find it under the tree.
~ Charlotte Carpenter
and hold the paper about 2 inches inside the flue. Move the paper in slow circles for 10 to 30 seconds. This will encourage warm air to flow up and out the chimney. 5. Light the newspaper between the logs, on all three sides. A good-size flame should leap up shortly, but will die down as the last of the paper burns. Look for smaller flames flickering along the bottom of the logs; this shows that the wood has caught, and that a nice, small- to medium-size fire will build in a few minutes. 6. Add wood to the fire one piece at a time. To maintain the fire’s size, add one new log for each log that burns away. To increase its size, add one log every five minutes or so to a steady fire, and note the amount of flames and heat after each addition.
The most complicated part of fire-building, for new users, is finding the right amount of kindling to get a steady fire going. Dry twigs and wood chips can be added to newspaper; leaves don’t burn as well and are better left on the mulch pile. Use a combination of woods for the best results: oak burns slowly and cleanly, while pine ignites more easily and burns hotter, but is consumed quickly. Enjoy your new fireplace, with a dose of common sense: Don’t burn trash in it, keep the gate closed and have the fireplace and chimney cleaned once a year. HOME TIP: Leave about 1 inch of fine ash in the bottom of the fireplace. The ash insulates the firebox and helps the fireplace heat more efficiently. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Upstate Chapel 2nd annual Christmas Recital by Elizabeth A. Tomlin With a turnout of nearly 300 people, the Upstate Chapel (formerly known as St. Peter’s-St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Canajoharie) deemed its 2nd annual Christmas Holiday Recital a great success. “Both Jeannie and I were very happy with the result,” commented Chapel owner Eric Stroud.
Master organist Eric Stroud poses with vocal soloist Rachael Takacs. Stroud remarked that in less than a year’s time six “wonderful recitals” have been held at the Upstate Chapel — all drawing a large attendance from the public. “The Christmas recital on Friday night was our second, and the musicians were fantastic!” Stroud attested. Stroud said the pro-
gram provided the audience with classical and contemporary works, some rarely heard, and some “generational favorites.” In addition to Stroud — a master organist — choral traditional and innovational music was performed by the Stone-house Piper on bagpipes, Our Lady of Hope Choir, the Sentimentalists, the Valley Choralaires, violinist and organist Naphtali Rothrock, violinist Naomi Rothrock, flutist Maura Stockwell, and soloists Rachael Takacs, Judy Sinner, Allison Wallace, Melissa Bowley and David Bowley. Accompanists included Norma Bowley, Carol Cechnicki and Janet Schuster. Plans are already underway for the 2013 schedule. “There will definitely be an organ recital or two,” reports Stroud, “and an Irish music recital near St. Patrick’s Day.” Stroud is also considering the possibility of holding film arts and an opera. Follow updates on the Upstate Chapel’s upcoming events on Facebook.
The Stonehouse Piper, Misha Murdoch, once again delighted the audience with his bagpipe performance.
Sisters Naomi and Naphtali Rothrock play ‘Bells Melody’ in a violin duet.
Our Lady of Hope Choir performs the seasonal tune, ‘How Quietly’.

Now here’s a tip by JoAnn Derson • Need a quick batch of cookies? Keep a box mix of cake on hand. Instead of the listed ingredients, add two eggs and a half-cup of oil to the mix. Mix and shape, then bake at 350 degrees F for 10 minutes. They are really good, and you
can get pretty creative. • Inexpensive gift idea: cute holiday coffee mug with a bar of chocolate, a packet of hot cocoa or instant coffee, a peppermint stick and a decorative holiday pick or spray. Place inside a gallonsize zipper-top bag, tie with a ribbon,
then trim off the zipper-top, leaving just the plastic. Looks nice. • Instead of going out and buying extra items to have on hand for guests, just borrow from your neighbors. Extra towels, place settings, silverware, kitchen appliances: It’s a
pretty good bet that someone on your street has it for you to borrow. If you don’t know your neighbors well enough to ask, maybe you should start planning a getto-know-you party right now. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Then found that the kit you purchased does not have the particular wheels (or tires, or engine, or seats...) which you want to add to your model? Sometime you may find a model kit that includes the piece or pieces you seek... but, why spend money for a second model, from which you intend to use only a few pieces? UPTOWN AUTOMOTIVE has a selection of individual parts and pieces, so you don’t have to buy that second kit for your project.
