When God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil — this is a gift of God. ~Ecclesiastes 5:19 J&W Woodworking owner Wayne Bouton explains how the roof of this Purple Martin birdhouse lifts to open. Hello Again, Here I sit with pen in hand, which is said to be mightier than a sword. I can’t think of a single battle to fight or a fair damsel to rescue. So here we go — Hello Again, again. I’ve noticed that every time my wife answers a phone ring from one of the kids (the oldest kid is 52), the conversation starts off with food. “What did you have for supper last night?” or if she knows they were at a restaurant, “What was their specialty?” or something like that. Well we can’t easily discuss your last evening meal so I’ll tell you a little about ours. We had a late lunch and decided to settle for a sandwich with a cup of tea for dinner. In Republican circles it is said — Republicans enjoy dinner at 7:00 p.m. while Democrats eat supper at 5:00. We eat when we are hungry. Socialists eat at someone else’s table, especially at a fellow taxpayer’s expense. My wife enjoyed a chicken sandwich. I settled for a bean sandwich. I truly enjoy an old-fashioned baked bean sandwich with homemade bread and tomato catsup. You know, the real-true-genuine oldfashioned American home baked beans. Sing along with Mitch, “American beans — the musical fruit — the more you eat — the more you toot — the more you toot — the better you feel, then you are ready for another meal,” — of American beans. When I talk with my family in Ireland the opening remark is always, “How’s the weather over there?” as if 3,000 miles away, the weather condition is newsworthy. Well maybe more important than last night’s supper. Thinking or chatting about weather, if you are in my age group, above 39, “way-way” above 39, you can remember the very heavy snowfall winters. Over in the hills, some of the country roads would stay snow-plugged for days. Even in the 1950s, roads such as Hubbard’s Hill, Murphy Hill near Cooperstown, Vickerman Hill between Mohawk and Richfield Springs, and Prey Hill east of W. Winfield were dreaded during a blizzard. Even the largest snowplow trucks such as Walters Snow Fighter plows could not handle the deep snowdrifts and large trucks with mounted blowers were brought in to open the roads. When I start digging into upstate New York business history, I grow more amazed. A friend’s loan of a Walter Motor Truck Company brochure reinforced my interest in the Walter trucks. The who is who or what is what and where is where in the business world seems to light up like the brightest lights on a Christmas tree. For example: in 1883 a Swiss immigrant, William Walter, established himself as a manufacturer of candy machinery. In addition to the candy equipment, he built passenger cars in New York City from 1904 to 1909. His autos were of the highest quality. In 1909, his factory on West 60th Street in New York City started producing trucks and in 1911 his first 4-wheel drive trucks appeared. In 1929 the first Walter Snow Fighter appeared. Despite Walter’s success in automobiles he decided the future lay in trucks. In 1957 he moved the Walter Motor Truck Company to Voorheesville. Voorheesville is near Albany. It appears the Walter Company basically manufactured only large trucks, such as the giant Walter Snow Fighter and airport crash trucks. These trucks were shipped to governments and airports all over the world.

Original Valley PENNYSAVER • January 26, 2013

Page 7

Walter’s motto was, “We have always been a New York company and always will be.” We have learned that the Franklin car was built in Syracuse, NY. The Walter cars and trucks in New York City and Voorheesville, NY, and the Brockway truck was also a New York State product. It’s cold today. About 18 degrees. A good day to sit near a fireplace with a Louis L’Amour novel, relax, read, and drift in and out with private thoughts. Do you ever do that? — find a favorite comfortable, quiet spot. Sit and read and drift off into your own world? It’s one of those great pleasures which is absolutely our own. Those thoughts or dreams are ours and ours alone. No one can share or take away those special moments. At such times, I allow my thoughts to drift back in time or look forward to a new adventure. Often I try to share those thoughts with the Lord. I wonder, did I author my thoughts and dreams or did the Heavenly Father place these thoughts so I could and would become aware? Last night my wife Sylvia and I went out to an Italian restaurant. We both decided to not order spaghetti, lasagna, or stuffed shells, which are a few of our favorite dishes. We both ordered open steak sandwiches and were pleased and surprised at the extra large cut. Sylvia ordered French fries which I helped her eat and left my mashed potatoes. Have you ever noticed how wonderful most restaurants create such mouth-watering meat and pasta dishes? However, they should all hire an Irish housewife to teach them how to make Irish mashed potatoes or rename them on the menu to: Almost-Soup, or Whipped Mush Potatoes, or be honest enough to place a little star next to their nonFrench fried potatoes and at the bottom of the sheet leave a caution sign: *We don’t recommend. Or an inquiry, “Do you know where Mrs. Murphy lives?” However, our steaks, salad bar, Sylvia’s fries, and the services proved to be wonderful and will certainly return. I just won’t order mashed potatoes. Hope they don’t read this or the next time we decide to go there, Sylvia may find her husband with his feet sticking out of the nearest snow bank. We need advice or help. Lee Publications now with 12 trade publications, 10 trade shows, along with a very busy print shop, 6 shopping guide papers — 2 Pennysavers and 4 DollarSavers, would like to hire 2 or 3 day per week advertising sales persons. This position would be ideally suited to a lady who would like to receive $300 weekly guaranteed salary with additional bonuses. These sales people — women or men — would work on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. How can we get this message out to these ladies or men? If you know of someone who would be interested, please have them phone Bruce Button at 518-673-0104 or John Snyder at 518-6730129. Ladies — or gentlemen — selected will be trained by our staff. A government tour guide at the Grand Canyon told a group of city dwellers and two farmers, “It took millions of years to carve out this magnificent canyon.” One of the farmers could be overheard saying, “It must have been a government project.” You do not need to be ill or half-scared to death to pray to God, nor do you need a credit check. You will learn God will listen and keep your thoughts secret. God’s answer to prayer always is best. If your feet are getting cold throw another chunk of wood in the stove. Curl up with an afghan and read the Pennysaver. God bless you — your family — and friends. Friends who pray together are special, and stay together. Fred Lee and the Lee Family

Whatchamacallits Pocket knives may seem like a modern tool, but truthfully they date back to medieval times. “Folding knives” existed during the Roman Empire but, with the Fall of the Roman Empire, fell out of popularity, not to reappear until either the thirteenth or fourteenth century. These ancient knives resembled razors with crescent-

shaped handles. The pocket knife most used in America came to the “New World” from Sheffield, England and was developed

around 1660. Early farmers and coachmen in America used pocket knives for a variety of daily needs, including cleaning horse’s hooves.

J&W Woodworking ~ A small shop with big results by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Looking at the handcrafted woodwork designed and built by Wayne Bouton, it’s hard to believe that less than 5 short years ago — in 2008 — he suffered a severe stroke. The stroke not only left him without the use of his left side, but also robbed him of his ability to speak and a nearly 80 percent loss of vision in his left eye. Because of his loss of

speech he had to write everything he wanted to communicate for over 8 months. Wayne, a retired contractor originally from Delaware County, who moved to Fort Plain about 2 years ago, credits his friends and family for his recovery. He and son Jacob have been worked together for years. “I’m training him,” Wayne stated. “Jacob had worked with me

But because of my health, I can’t build houses anymore.” Bouton says he’s gone from building houses for people to building birdhouses and doghouses. However, he builds much more than that! And the quality and elaborate woodwork and stonework that go into what he creates is far beyond what is commonly found. An electric fireplace in an exquisite cabinet made of wood and soapstone is displayed in his workshop. This was a special order from one customer. “I take special orders, refinish furniture, repair and make

trim and custom moldings, I can do anything with wood,” Bouton said. Although he is now in a small 378 square foot workshop, Bouton plans to be moving to a storefront at 84 Main St. in Fort Plain, by April. “This spring, about the time the flowers start to bloom, I’ll be blooming over there,” he laughed. Bouton has also donated some of his fine work to local fund-raisers and is currently building a coffee table with drawers for another upcoming benefit. He acknowledges that his ability is a “gift” and that detail is one of the things he focuses on when designing his creations. Wayne, who still has about 89 percent nerve damage in his left side, has advice for others who have suffered a stroke. “Fight it,” he said. “When I had the stroke I figured this is it. I’m done. But you can overcome it. It’s hard. It’s a long, long road. But it can be done.” For more information call J&W Woodworking at 518832-3843.

The National Foundation for Credit Counseling has offered up a list of 10 suggestions for adding dollars back into your budget. • Adjust your withholding. If you receive a tax refund every year, you’re essentially giving the government an in-

terest-free loan. Adjust your deductions so you get more of that money in your paycheck. Use the worksheet at www.irs.gov. • Pay with cash. You’ll save the interest and fees you would be charged using a credit card. • Refinance. If you own a home, investigate whether refinancing will get you a lower monthly payment. • Find $10 in each of 10 categories per month. Shave $10 off the grocery bill. Rent a movie instead of going to a theater. Use the library instead of buying books. Turn down the thermostat one degree F. Take your morning coffee from home instead of stopping on the way to work. • Do it yourself. Don’t pay for things you can do yourself, such as lawn mowing, house cleaning and easy interior projects such as painting.

• Change your habits. Don’t automatically buy weekly lottery tickets. Read newspapers online. • Declutter, especially if you have a rented storage space. You’ll save the monthly fee, and if you sell the extra items, you can pocket that money, too. • Get comparisons on all your insurance policies — auto, home, life. Ask about discounts for combining policies or good driving. • Check your bank statement for avoidable fees. Get enough cash so you don’t have to use non-network ATMS. If fees are not negotiable for other bank services, consider changing banks. • Turn your skills into cash. Not everyone knows what you do, and others might pay for your abilities. How to enjoy winter activities safely As we go through winter, kids are keeping their fingers crossed in much of the country for a snow day so they can go sledding, have snow ball fights and do lots of other winter activities. You and your family may also get outside this winter to enjoy the ski slopes, ice skating rinks and other fun the weather brings. USA.gov offers these tips to stay safe while enjoying all that winter has to offer: • When heading out to a winter sports activity, such as skiing or snowboarding, remember to always dress appropriately with a helmet, boots and other

cold weather gear, all of which help prevent injury, hypothermia and other hazards of winter fun. Read up on winter safety and health tips so you’re prepared before you head out. • It’s important to look for winter storm warnings, watches and advisories before you hit the slopes or other recreational areas. Twenty-five percent of winter weather fatalities are because people are caught off guard. Make sure you’re prepared by knowing the projected snowfall and other advisories before leaving your house.

• For tips on specific winter sports safety equipment, such as hockey, ice skating, sledding and more, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission offers time- tested tips for each specific winter activity and how to dress yourself and your kids appropriately for each one. • If you’re heading out on a hike or camping on public lands, you can use Recreation.gov to search for recreation areas with winter sports activities near you. The site also provides information on winter sports activities across the

nation and tips on taking care of our public land while visiting.

Survive the snow and ice with winter driving tips from an auto expert (BPT) — Winter means updating your outerwear to include mittens and a thermal jacket, but before you hit the road, have you also updated your winter driving skills? When temperatures drop, roads can become more dangerous, meaning you need to change how you drive. Steve Magnante, SPEED collector car expert and “On-theBlock” reporter, offers some valuable tips for driving smart and staying safe on the unpredictable roads of winter: 1. Top rule of winter driving: slow down Winter brings snow, ice and sleet, and these variables change how your vehicle grips and moves on the road. Staying alert and slowing down is the first step of safe winter driving, because you never know the exact road conditions or how your car might react to them. 2. Keep an eye out for the unknown First, always be aware of other drivers on the road. “Even though you might be a great driver, sometimes there are people around you that didn’t get the message,” says Magnante. “Keep a nice distance between you, and the people around you, particularly if there are people in front of you because if you are following too close and they have to hit the brakes hard, you could be in trouble.” Second, watch for virtually invisible black ice, which appears as shiny, black or wet tar on the road, and can leave drivers with little-to-no traction when they hit it. 3. Test your winter driving skills Today’s modern cars come with a plethora of safety features that protect passengers, particularly in tough winter environments, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have to adjust how you drive to stay safe.

While specialized winter driving courses do exist, they may not be available in some areas. If you can’t take a course, Magnante recommends finding an empty, open space (make sure it’s legal), and seeing how your car behaves on winter driving surfaces. “If you can drive around on snow in a way that you’re going slowly, but you can cut the wheel hard, brake hard, you can learn some lessons about what it is to be driving on snow in a place where you can’t hurt yourself or your car, like behind a Walmart parking lot,” says Magnante. 4. Navigate ice and snow with caution If you live in an area that gets a lot of

ice or pack snow and it’s allowed, studded snow tires are a worthy investment. If you only encounter ice periodically during winter, try to drive on the areas of roads that have been treated with sand and salt. If you do slide, he says, “steer into the skid. For example, if the tail of the car is coming out to the right, you want to turn to the right, rather than turn into the left, giving the rear more momentum to swing the car around and spin out.” 5. Use your common sense and be prepared When it comes to heading out on the road, trust your gut feeling and use your common sense. If the weather conditions are rough and your travels aren’t absolutely necessary, stay home until things improve. If you do drive, pack some emergency supplies such as

a blanket, boots, insulated mittens, a small shovel and always have your cell charged and ready. Consider storing an extra jug of windshield antifreeze in the trunk so if you run out, you can refill and keep your windows and vision clear. Magnante adds, “You may want check your insurance policy and enhance it in areas, especially if your kids are driving the car.”

Don’t get caught in the cold: Know the facts about winter gas mileage (BPT) — Winter and colder temperatures are notorious for creating difficult driving conditions that can place strain on drivers and their vehicles. And as the temperature drops this winter, so will your gas mileage. Colder temperatures mean cold oil, tires and cold air in the carburetor — all factors that reduce gas mileage. With higher prices lingering at the gas pumps, a few fuel-saving tips can help protect your miles per gallon (MPG) this winter. Warm your car up the right way Many people believe the myth that you must warm your car up in the winter. The truth is that idling your car actually destroys your MPG and isn’t necessary. Modern cars don’t require a warm-up, even when the temperatures drop below zero, according to AAA. Modern en-

gines, those built since about 1990, have fuel injection systems rather than carburetors and need no more than 10 to 30 seconds to get oil moving through the engine properly. Auto experts recommend driving moderately in cold weather to allow the engine and other systems to warm up slowly and reduce wear and tear. So even though many people choose to warm up their car in the winter for personal comfort or to defrost windows, idling a vehicle for more than even one minute is simply wasting gas. Get your car winter ready From changing the oil to checking the tire pressure on a regular basis, improving your winter gas mileage is easier than you might think. “Your vehicle’s motor oil becomes thicker in colder temperatures, which adds stress to the engine,” says Jim Rossbach, CHS director of technical services and quality. “Try a thinner grade of oil to keep your engine running smoothly in the colder months.” Rossbach recommends using a high-performing synthetic oil like Cenex Maxtron, which is designed to perform well in low temperatures and improve fuel economy. Proper tire inflation can also improve fuel economy by up to 3 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Ener1967 GTO, new radiator, good tires, runs, west coast car, $3,500.00. email waltbyers@yahoo.com Bad Credit? gy. It is important to check tire pressure several times throughout the winter when colder temperature can reduce tire pressure at a rate of one pound per square inch (PSI) for every 10 degrees change. Lighten the load Extra weight from cargo or snow also reduces fuel efficiency. Cleaning out your car and clearing off heavy snow is an easy way to get better gas mileage. In the past, carrying sandbags in the trunk was a common method for gaining more traction and helping rear-

wheel drive cars perform better on snow and ice. Today, most cars are frontwheel drive with the engine over the front wheels, creating that same grip. Carrying extra weight does not add traction on snow and ice, but simply lowers your fuel economy.
