Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. ~ 1 Corinthians 13:4-5

February 16, 2013 Hello Again, While I have personally reached the ripe old age of antique with all of the provable modern appliances and changes, false teeth, hearing aids, spectacles, white hair and shortage of memory. I still enjoy reading old newspapers, pictures and booklets printed before my time. This week I received a special surprise from a local history buff and collector, Hal Stauring brought in a booklet titled “Canajoharie and the World War” published for the 1st World War homecoming celebration dated July 4, 1919. Over 350 names were listed as served in the U.S. military from Canajoharie, NY. I have often wondered why some are chosen to give the ultimate sacrifice. The following can still play a sad tune on our heartstrings. The first page in the booklet is in memory of those special persons. The Silent Sound: Here inscribed are the names of the boys who have gone, never to return. Who knows but they may be looking down upon us as we are gathered together here today to pay deference to their comrades and to do homage to their memory. They fought the good fight, they kept the faith, may they repose in everlasting peace until that day when Gabriel shall sound the last reveille and they shall arise in a glorious resurrection. King, Bernard Mosher, Raymond O’Brien, Dennis Pross, Gustav Pettit, William Roberts, Theron Rocklin, Elijah Sanderson, William Smith, Raymond Smith, Orville Van Dusen, Edwin Those who served in World War I: Allen, Byron Albrecht, Christopher Ambrosio, Alex Anspach, Lloyd Anthony, Homer Arkell, W. On the same date July 1919 a local (St. Johnsville) merchant ran the following advertisement in the St. Johnsville Weekly “The Enterprise” Radways Pills Cures Dyspepsia Cure for all disorders of the stomach, liver, bowels, kidneys, bladder, nervous diseases, loss of appetite, headache, constipation, continence, indigestion, biliousness, fever, inflammation of the bowels, piles and all derangement of the internal viscera and perfect digestion will be accomplished. Special note to my friend the vet and his farmer friends “Do you think it would or will cure Hollows Horn”? In the January 3, 1901 issue of the St. Johnsville Enterprise R.B. Beckman’s Firm placed the following ad: At Beckman’s – On sale 5000 Heavy Fleece lined union Suits, regular 75¢ goods our price only 19¢ per suit size 5 to 15 years or older. 1,000 Ladies jersey ribbed fleece lined winter weight vests and pants. Regular 25¢ and 35¢ Garments only 15¢ each. Mens Extra Heavy Fleeced Wrappers and Drawers; Regular 75¢ Garments, at just half price 37 1/2¢ each garment. Come early to secure bargains. (Note the price thirty seven and one half cents) Who said the old time weekly newspapers covered only local news such as: Aunt Martha Hendricks was the Sunday dinner guest at the Tom McCarthy home. They enjoyed roast beef, mashed potatoes, peas with gravy and all the fixens. Dessert was apple pie with cheddar cheese. The following National news was headlined in the St. Johnsville Enterprise 112 years ago: (RANGE WAR IN THE WEST) Buffalo, Wyoming - Another fierce range war between the sheep and cattle owners has broken out near the Wyoming Montana border. A few days ago 2000 sheep owned by R.R. Selway were driven over a cliff by a band of hooded raiders. The remainder of the report was too gory to include in this chatter. January 3, 1901 Haver Hill, Mass. Mayor John C. Chase, the 1st socialist Mayor ever elected in this country has completed his official career. His last order increased the Salaries of Assessors from $400 to $600. He accepted a place as a Traveling Shoe Salesman. Isn’t it strange to note that a socialist politician would push or cause to happen such a large pay increase for Government workers? As we have mentioned in “Hello Again” bigger Government with its higher cost and socialism seems to go hand in hand. Is it possible that you and your spouse are going to miss out on money which the government actually owes, and possibly to you? The answer is absolutely yes. Some people fail to file and receive a huge tax credit called the earned income tax credit, worth up to $5,981 for the 2012 tax year. That’s up to nearly six thousand big bucks — you must file your taxes properly to receive it. If your household earned less than $51,000, you may be eligible. Head for a good tax attorney or tax service and ask if you are eligible for the earned income tax credit. This is not Irish blarney — don’t gip yourself. You may already be eligible for up to $5,891 but it is up to you to file properly. Be a good neighbor. Don’t kick your dog. Kiss your spouse and talk your thanks and problems over with the Lord. Whatchamacallits This animal restraining device is known as a “Handy Hog Holder.” It is just under two feet in length and is a 1930s-era cast iron tool. A farmer would slip the larger loop around a hog’s snout to hold it still when putting rings in its nose. The purpose of ringing hogs is to keep them from “rooting,” or burrowing into the ground with their snout. The Handy Hog Holder could also be used as a moving tool. After placing the loop over the hog’s snout, one could more easily command the animal to back up, much like reins on a horse. This was especially useful if said hog was partiularly heavy and cumbersome. The smaller loop on Handy Hog Holder was for similar
purposes, but used for pigs and smaller hogs. This tool was patented Nov. 24, 1931 by a Dr. Rinehart, who was a veterinarian at the time. Today, hog farmers who still use the ring method may use other original creative
strategies to hold the animal still; many apply the rings when the animals are small enough to handle, holding the pigs in their arms. However, it has also become more common for ringing to be done by a veterinarian than on the farm.

Buying a secondhand stove If you are thinking about buying a secondhand stove, here are some things to look for: 1. Glass in the Stove Door: Ceramic glass was invented in the late 1980s. If a stove has glass in it, it means it’s no more than 25-28 years old and is most likely EPA certified. Most stoves without glass are real clunkers. Plus, if you have a fire, don’t you want to see it? 2. Gaskets: Look for gaskets around the door. Gaskets help create a tight
fit so that smoke cannot escape around the door. Gaskets are probably the thing that most often needs replacing. If the edge of the door has grooves but no gaskets, you need to replace them. Gaskets usually need replacing every 2-3 years, even if they are intact. 3. Firebrick: Firebrick, which is the brick on the inside of the firebox, helps to maintain a hot, clean fire. Check to see if any firebricks are cracked or missing. A few thin
cracks in the firebrick are normal, but large cracks and powdering are signs that it needs to be replaced. Fortunately, firebrick is not very expensive. Just make sure it’s cut to the size you need. 4. Structural Integrity: Look for cracks in the metal and especially cracks in the seams. One way to check for cracks is to put a light bulb in the stove and check if you can see light anywhere. Make sure it is not rickety.
5. Metal Fatigue: A sign of metal fatigue include a whitish-greyish rust that forms on the upper part of the stove. Metal fatigue is an indication that the stove has been used for a long time or has been overfired. You shouldn’t purchase stoves that have been damaged in this way, they are not likely to last very long. Stoves that have a slight, white coloration may be fine and may only require repainting. Electric baseboard heaters Electric baseboard heaters are zonal heaters controlled by thermostats located within each room. Baseboard heaters contain electric heating elements encased in metal pipes. The pipes, surrounded by aluminum fins to aid heat transfer, run the length of the base-
board heater’s housing, or cabinet. As air within the heater is warmed, it rises into the room, and cooler air is drawn into the bottom of the heater. Some heat is also radiated from the pipe, fins, and housing. Baseboard heaters are usually installed
underneath windows. There, the heater’s rising warm air counteracts falling cool air from the cold window glass. Baseboard heaters are seldom located on interior walls because standard heating practice is to supply heat at the home’s perimeter, where the greatest
heat loss occurs. Baseboard heaters should sit at least three-quarters of an inch (1.9 centimeters) above the floor or carpet. This is to allow the cooler air on the floor to flow under and through the radiator fins so it can be heated. Source: energy.gov

Taxable and nontaxable income Most types of income are taxable, but some are not. Income can include money, property or services that you receive. Here are some examples of income that are usually not taxable: • Child support payments; • Gifts, bequests and inheritances; • Welfare benefits; • Damage awards for physical injury or sickness; • Cash rebates from a dealer or manufacturer for an item you buy; and • Reimbursements for qualified adoption expenses. Some income is not
taxable except under certain conditions. Examples include: • Life insurance proceeds paid to you because of an insured person’s death are usually not taxable. However, if you redeem a life insurance policy for cash, any amount that is more than the cost of the policy is taxable. • Income you get from a qualified scholarship is normally not taxable. Amounts you use for certain costs, such as tuition and required course books, are not taxable. However, amounts used for room and board are taxable.
All income, such as wages and tips, is taxable unless the law specifically excludes it. This includes non-cash income from bartering — the exchange of property or services. Both parties must include the fair market value of goods or services received as income on their tax return. If you received a refund, credit or offset of state or local income taxes in 2012, you may be required to report this amount. If you did not receive a 2012 Form 1099-G, check with the government agency that
made the payments to you. That agency may have made the form available only in an electronic format. You will need to get instructions from the agency to retrieve this document. Report any taxable refund you received even if you did not receive Form 1099-G. For more information and examples, see Publication 525, Taxable and Nontaxable Income. The booklet is available at IRS.gov or by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800829-3676). Source: www. irs.gov

Neil Kelly Company announces the top 10 home design and remodeling trends for 2013 Neil Kelly Company, an award-winning design-build remodeling firm that has remodeled more than 30,000 homes, announces its Top 10 interior design trends for 2013. 10. Kitchen Cabinets: A clean, simple, contemporary look will be popular with homeowners looking to economize and eliminate unnecessary clutter and fussy details that equate to high maintenance and complicated living. For those who don’t want to spring for new cabinetry, re-facing or refinishing cabinets offers more bang for the buck. 9. Countertops: Granite has been dethroned. While granite isn’t going away and still has many die-hard fans, the new king of countertops will be quartz composite — the closest thing to no maintenance, bullet-proof countertop materials available today. 8. Hardwood Floors: Pre-finished
and engineered wood flooring will become more popular than the once gold-standard of site-finished flooring. Pre-finished woods provide a hard, durable finish, are an installation time saver, and eliminate the sanding dust dilemma. Engineered wood floors are also compatible with under-floor heating systems, a big plus in cold climates. 7. Glass Backsplashes: Glass mosaic tile is on the way out. Taking its place are glass/stone/tile mosaic composites that can add more texture and visual interest and that tie in more readily with stone or quartz countertops. Be on the lookout for backpainted, solid glass panel backsplashes in contemporary settings, which provides an ultra-clean, almost ethereal look to a polished, modern kitchen setting. 6. Stylishly Simple Sinks: Goodbye double-sinks, hello deep
single-bowl sinks. With accessories such as fitted colanders and dish drains, deep single-bowl sinks have all the benefits of a divided sink, plus the large size to actually fit that roasting pan or those baking sheets into the sink all at once. Stainless is still popular, but the quartz composites are a great value and durable option. 5. Color Palette: Charcoal is the new black. 2013 will find this silky color everywhere as it blends the right amount of chocolate, grey and a touch of green. 4. Bathroom Stone: Synonymous with luxury, Calacatta marble will find its way into both traditional and contemporary bathrooms. It is valued for a whiter background and bolder grey veins. 3. Texture and Sparkle: Bedazzled may find its way into home décor and design as homeowners seek a blend of classic textures and colors with pops of
bold color and elements of sparkle. Glossy glass tile backsplashes and sparkle on polished nickel fixtures trend in 2013. 2. Living In Your Home Longer/MultiGenerational Living: With many certified aging-in-place specialists (CAPS), Neil Kelly designers predict a growing trend to help aging baby boomers safely “grow old” in their homes, for as long as possible. Watch for easy kitchen and bath upgrades to enhance functionality, comfort and safety. 1. Healthy Home, Healthy Living: Green and sustainable design is here to stay. (BPT) — Weekend warriors rule as 2013 is proving to be the year that the do-it-yourself trend reaches full momentum. If you have a weekend to spare, you have plenty of time to make some home improvements that add value and curb appeal. The key is to choose projects that have a big impact, but only take a few days to complete. The first step in preparing for any home improvement project is ensuring you have all the right tools and supplies. If you need project-specific tools, it may make sense to rent them rather than buy, depending on how many times you plan to use them. Next, head to a home improvement store for supplies. Consider these projects that can be done in one weekend — each will add impressive curb appeal while enhancing your home’s overall value: 1. Garage door upgrade One of the largest focal points of a house’s exterior is the garage door, yet it’s often overlooked when it comes time to consider home improvements. An old garage door with dings, scratches and dents can be an eyesore that dates a home. A new garage door can give your house’s facade a stylish facelift, revamping the home’s look instantly. Modern options are convenient to install and operate, and are sure to impress neigh-
bors, guests and potential buyers, if you are selling. Plus, according the 2013 Cost vs. Value report from Remodeling magazine, replacing a garage door has a 75 percent return on investment, meaning you’re sure to add value to your real estate investment. 2. Create a grand welcome Many people use their garage entranceway as the main way to enter their home, so it’s easy to forget about the experience of entering through the front door. That’s why it’s important to take a moment to walk to your home through the main entrance, like a guest or potential buyer would. Is the experience warm and welcoming, or drab and dated? If the entrance path to your home is less than stellar, a few upgrades will improve it tremendously. Trim overgrown shrubs, add new mulch, paint wood stairs or railways and consider replacing your entry door — a new steel entry door has an impressive 85 percent return on investment. 3. Reseal the driveway A cracked, faded driveway can make your property look older than it really is. If you have an asphalt driveway, it’s easy to refresh it without a complete replacement or upgrade to concrete. Sealing, while messy, is achievable for even modest DIYers, helping to extend the life of your driveway while adding an at-
tractive cohesive black appearance. Visit your local home improvement store for all necessary supplies. Remember to fill cracks and holes before brushing the sealer over the surface of the driveway. Keep in mind that older driveways that have not been resurfaced may require two coats. These projects have a big impact and can be completed in one weekend or less, making them perfect for today’s DIY homeowner. But no matter what home improvement project you decide to take on, make sure you start with a plan and get the appropriate supplies so you can manage your time and budget efficiently.
2013’s hottest home trends and easy upgrades (BPT) — The top home decor trends for 2013 are already emerging, and homeowners seeking a fresh look will find a lot to love. Not only can these looks be accomplished in minimal time — they’re budget friendly and easy enough for DIYers to finish in a weekend or less. Giving your home an updated feel doesn’t require a full-scale renovation. Instead, focus on simple updates for the most frequently used rooms in your house. When you’re ready to get started on your home’s new look, let these trends of the year be your design
guide. In the kitchen Kitchens need to be functional, but in this hub of the home style is just as important. Upholding practicality while adding visual interest is a top trend this season. Two-toned upper and lower cabinet colors are rapidly growing in popularity as a way to let homeowners customize their kitchen spaces and express their personalities. • Maple is the style frontrunner when it comes to wooden cabinets, but painted cabinets in white, black and
gray tones are also on the rise. Whether you opt to replace your cabinet fronts or paint them, your efforts will give you impressive — and fast — results. • On the functionality front, innovative handsfree faucets simplify cooking and cleaning tasks while requiring minimal effort to install. • Open shelving is seeing a boost in popularity. Both glass-fronted cabinets and simple open shelves capture this trend, allowing you to put your style on display while creating a sleek, updated look.
In the bath A luxurious-feeling bath doesn’t need to make big demands on your wallet. By making a few on-trend updates, you’ll give your room designer appeal guaranteed to make an impression. • Updating the vanity, often the focal point in a bathroom, provides immediate results. • Tiling provides the perfect solution to add extra personality to your bath. Right now, trends offer two different but equally chic directions — large-scale tile and smallscale mosaics. Tiles with wood-like appearances are also gaining popular-
ity; they create a warm, inviting look, but offer the wet-space practicality of tile. Throughout the home When it comes to loweffort, big-impact changes, it’s hard to beat a fresh coat of paint. For walls that feel drab, boring or outdated, new paint makes a color statement and draws attention to architectural details. Follow these paint tips to make an instant, dramatic impression: • Alter the dimensions of a space by painting ceilings a slightly lighter color than the walls.
• Create patterns and shapes using painter’s tape. Stripes, chevrons and ombre effects are perfectly on-trend. • Highlight architectural details by painting interior doors and trim in a colorful hue instead of traditional white. In one weekend or less, these simple changes will make your home feel like an entirely new space. So when the seasonal urge to renovate sets in, don’t resist — reinvigorate your home with these ideas. Find more decorating trends and inspiration at Lowes.com.
This is a hammer by Samantha Mazzotta Permanently silence a squeaky floor Q: The floor squeaks loudly when I walk over a couple of spots in my living room. I read somewhere that you can stop these squeaks by sprinkling talcum powder between the boards. But my floor is covered by carpet. Is there any other way to fix the squeaks? — Squeaking Mad in Memphis A: Talcum powder is a good temporary fix for squeaky floorboards (as noted in my new book, “101 Best Home Repair Tips,” available from Amazon). But eventually the squeaks come back anyway. If you’re not inclined to pull back the carpet repeatedly to apply powder between the boards, try a more permanent solution. Do you have access to the underside of the living room floor, such as in the basement or the crawlspace under the house? If so, you either shim the nearest joist or secure the subflooring to the squeaky boards to reduce the noise. To shim the floor, have a helper walk around the living room while you listen below for squeaks, and mark the noisy areas. Next, mark the joists (the large boards running perpendicular to the floorboards underneath the floor) on either side of the squeaky area. Coat a shim (a thin wedge of wood, available at most home-improvement stores) with a thin layer of wood glue, and hammer the shim into the gap between the joist and the subfloor on each side of the squeak. You may need to add a couple of shims on each side, and have your helper test the area each time.
If that doesn’t completely rid your floor of squeaks, try attaching the subfloor to the floorboards in the squeaky area more tightly. You do this by driving wood screws through the subfloor layer into the bottom of the floorboards. Be careful to select screws that will not punch through the floorboards. Place the screws into the center of the squeaky area — two should do it, but if you need three or more, go ahead. What if you can’t access the underside of the floor? This is where you’ll need to roll back the carpet and address the boards from above. To avoid marring the floorboards, hammer finishing nails between the squeaking boards, angling them so that they go into one edge of one of the boards. The nails should be flush with the floorboards. Space them a few inches apart along the squeaky area. If that doesn’t do it, you can secure the floorboard to the subflooring from above. This will mar the board, as you’ll need to drive a finishing nail (or if necessary, a wood screw) directly through the center of the squeaky floorboard into the subflooring. Use a nail set or another nail to drive the finishing nail slightly below the wood’s surface. Then cover it with wood filler whose color matches the color of the floorboard. HOME TIP: Talcum or graphite powder are just temporary fixes for squeaky floors. Apply either one between the offending boards and brush away excess. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Happily ever after with your car If you want to add more years to the relationship between you and your car, give it a little extra attention in the form of an oil change, tune-up or other loving service to make sure it runs happily ever after. Just a little extra care can lead to a longer life for your car, says the Car Care Council. “There’s no debating the value of preventive maintenance to keep your car running efficiently. By giving your vehicle a little more attention now, you’ll avoid the heartbreak and unexpected expense of car
trouble down the road,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. The Car Care Council recommends you treat your car to regular care this month and beyond. • Schedule a tune-up annually to optimize your car’s performance. A well-tuned engine delivers the best balance of power and fuel economy and produces the lowest level of emissions. • Change the oil and filter per the owner’s manual. Periodic oil and filter changes keep your
engine clean on the inside. • Check the tire pressure monthly, including the spare. Your car’s tires affect its ride, handling, traction and safety. • Have the alignment checked annually. Potholes and other road conditions, as well as normal wear, can take their toll on your car’s steering and suspension. A wheel alignment reduces tire wear, improves fuel economy and handling, and increases driving enjoyment and
safety. • Inspect the windshield wipers and lights on the car. Lights and wipers play a major role in safe driving, and they are normal wear items that need periodic replacement. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a copy of the council’s Car Care Guide or for more information, visit www.carcare.org.
