CATCHING UP WITH

TIM PARKINSON

From humble beginnings From the age of six, I wanted to be an engineer.

I left school at 16 and applied for an apprenticeship with Frank Watsons and Sons, a Keighley engineering company which made industrial equipment for the Royal Navy and the NHS. After six years studying part-time at Keighley College, I qualified as an Incorporated Engineer. I applied for a job with Airedale Springs in 1979 as a tooling engineer. Based in Haworth, it employs 29 people including four apprentices. It operates from a modern factory, filled with computer-controlled equipment, manufacturing a wide range of springs and wire products for an equally wide range of customers. As well as being Chairman, I still spend time making tools and fixing machines. Large wire forms, used in products such as the world famous Brompton Bicycle, can be difficult to check during production so we manufacture 3D printed checking gauges to quickly verify product quality and consistency.

CATCHING UP WITH

CHARLOTTE MEEK

A stitch in time

Charlotte studied City & Guilds Dressmaking at Keighley College. She now runs her own business, The Stitch Society, and is known in the textile industry and creative/arts world. Alongside the business of running The Stitch Society, Charlotte teamed up with Keighley College to establish a Textile Academy. Sharing her skills, she runs a course for 16 to 19-year-olds to gain qualifications to set them up for a career in the fashion or textile industry which is enjoying a resurgence in the north, with The Stitch Society providing a stitch in time for its future.

RHIAN EVANS

ENGINEERING APPRENTICE

My experience at Keighley College has been extremely positive. It was a huge deal for me to go back into education after 16 years of working and all the staff helped me greatly in the transition from full-time work to full-time study. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience and can’t praise the college enough. My future plans are to carry on studying until I have finished my apprenticeship, and hopefully go on to higher education.

44

My highlights of the last academic year have been plentiful. The people I have met have made my time a most enjoyable experience and I hope it continues in the same way. Coming from an office background (but working very closely with engineers), everything that has been delivered on the engineering course has been new to me, I came as a blank canvas. The tutors have been brilliant and patient, and I can’t thank them enough.

MEGAN WILD HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE

My time at Keighley College has been amazing! All the staff are amazing and they make me feel so welcome and I have enjoyed all of my course that I have completed at college.

Also one of my favourite times at college is getting to know each tutor and everyone on my course. They are amazing people and made me feel very welcome to the group.

I would definitely recommend this college to people!

The skills I have learnt to do teamwork with others within the group and got involved with everything within college. I have also learnt how to encourage people when they struggle with things and telling them they can do it and they can achieve things.

The highlight of my time at college is going to Germany with some girls and my tutor. I had the best experience working with children in a nursery there.
