Enrich and Excel When reviewing applications, universities and employers look for evidence of a commitment to a chosen subject or job area and a range of skills that go beyond academic study. All students are encouraged to develop these skills and qualities that make them stand out from the crowd by participating in enrichment activities. Enrichment can either be extracurricular or super-curricular and all Leeds Sixth Form College students are given the opportunity to undertake both. Extra-curricular activities are pursuits and interests that students undertake in addition to their academic studies to show employers and universities what well rounded

individuals they are. Super-curricular activities take an individual's academic study to a higher level and demonstrate a real commitment to a subject. All students will participate in both strands of enrichment activities every term.

Here are just a few of the activities available to students: Board games

Performing arts

Book club

Mindfulness

Confidence building (public Speaking lessons)

Film making

Driving theory

PQ (Project equivalent E to one A level Maths challenge

Football (Male and female Sessions available Psychology Volunteering

Students who complete at least four enrichment activities in different areas will receive the Leeds Sixth Form Community Award to recognise their achievements. Many students will also complete 'points-boosting' subjects such as the Extended Project Qualification and Core Maths to improve their applications to employment, university and apprenticeships. All students in their first year of A levels will also undertake a week long work placement in a work area relevant to their future progression.

Meet our Students Beth Whiteley Beth Whiteley chose Leeds Sixth Form College as she had the flexibility of studying creative subjects alongside maths. On results day, she walks away with B, A and A* grades for maths, textiles and photography respectively. Beth spent a lot of time with her grandparent who showed her how to make things. She also enjoyed textiles at high school so decided to study it further. Beth said: “I have always enjoyed making things, coming up with ideas and bringing them to life it gives me so much freedom and creativity. Some of my projects have included photographing mouldy fruit and vegetables and creating hand embroidered flowers. “As for maths, it’s something I am good at and it’s refreshing to study an objective discipline in between being creative.”

Beth had a positive experience at Leeds Sixth Form College, even exploring extracurricular activities such as sign language club in her free time. “I had a great time at Leeds Sixth Form College. It allowed me to pursue my favourite subjects in a welcoming atmosphere. Other schools mainly focus on grades, whereas here the tutors have a genuine passion for their subjects and ensure you develop vital skills needed for the industry. “It’s a very versatile place, where I had the opportunity to meet people from a variety of backgrounds. Throughout my time here, I felt comfortable, at home and safe.” Beth is planning on studying an art and design diploma at Leeds Art University and aims to build a portfolio, achieve a degree and pursue a career in costume design.

Meet our Students Ryan Back After moving around for most of his primary and high school life, including to schools in Glasgow, Ryan finally found somewhere he was able to fit in when he joined Leeds Sixth Form College. After failing his GCSEs and not being eligible to join the army, he enrolled on the Step-up programme. After re-sitting his GSCEs, he said he found his confidence and credits tutor Steven Horn for inspiring him to study English Language and Literature at A level.

“You are able to be independent here. In most sixth form colleges, you are taught for many years, but here, you can learn a lot in a short amount of time. Ryan, who is currently studying English Language, English Literature and Sociology, says he'd like to study Sociology at university, and one day become a teacher or go into politics.

"I knew I was smart enough, but I needed to push myself forward and the Step-up programme helped to give me that discipline. The teachers also treated me with respect; like an equal.

Meet our Students Aida Alfares Aida Alfares left Leeds Sixth Form College with her head held high on A level results day - with three As in chemistry, biology and maths. Originally from Syria, Aida’s journey started with self-taught English when she arrived in the UK four years ago. It took her just three months before she was speaking confidently and was able to apply for GCSEs as a mature student. Aida said: “Arriving in the UK was a challenge at first due to the language barrier. My family had to flee from Syria as it was too dangerous for us. I once heard a bomb explode while I was at school and my mum decided that we had to leave. “Luckily the support at Leeds Sixth Form College has been amazing. The tutors were extremely supportive and made sure I knew what qualifications I needed to be able to pursue dentistry.”

Aida knew from a young age that she wanted to be a dentist. The 21 year old said: “I watched a documentary about Syrian refugees and the care they receive. Although there were doctors and healthcare support, there was a lack of dentists and it was that moment that made me want to pursue this career option. “I wanted to do something that would help others and I love science so it was a natural step to take. I’m so thankful for the support and help I received here at the college. Everyone has been so friendly and welcoming and I’m looking forward to my next steps.” Aida is now considering taking a gap year for some work experience before heading to university. Her goal is to own a dental practice.

Meet our Students Grace Firth Leeds Sixth Form College gave Grace Firth another chance after she failed her A levels at school. She walked away with a B and two As in law, psychology and sociology respectively. She said: “I didn’t enjoy my time at school - the teaching wasn’t good and only focused on grades. Coming here made a huge difference. I wanted to start my A levels from scratch and this was the perfect setting and environment for me to do so. “The teaching here was the biggest difference. Tutors were always willing to help and go the extra mile to meet our needs. They made me feel relaxed and gave me a homely place to start again, which made me motivated to succeed.” Alongside her studies, she had a weekend job that was sometimes a challenge.

“At one point during my time here, the pressure of trying to work, study and fit in a social life got to me and I broke down. Thanks to the wellbeing team at college, I got the support I needed and managed to get back on track. “I was also nominated to be a student leader, which allowed me to help fellow students with any difficulties they were facing.” Grace was pleased to see her results after two years of hard work at Leeds Sixth Form College. “I couldn’t believe it, even my mum started crying with happiness. I would like to say thank you to all my teachers, especially Glenis, who made me love psychology.” Grace will be heading to Nottingham Trent University to study psychology and hopes to specialise in sport psychology or forensics.

About

Progression routes

A level Biology is a course designed to develop an understanding of various key biological systems. These systems include the components of cells, the molecules which make up living things and the reactions between them. It also compares the systems found in plants and animals that are necessary for life.

More than 70% of our A level Biology students from last year are applying for biology-related university courses. We have excellent progression rates to university with students gaining places on biology, neuroscience, food and nutrition, and medical courses at Bristol University after studying this course.

In the second year, a more integrated approach to considering biological systems is needed as we learn about how different parts of the body and different populations interact in the topics of communication and ecology. Throughout the course, you will also develop a variety of investigative practical skills, including the use of scientific equipment, presentation, analysis of data and evaluation of techniques.

Entry requirements Grade 9-5 in GCSE Biology or grade 9-5 in GCSE Combined Science and a grade 9-5 in GCSE Maths.

There will be an increased push towards exams as the preferred form of assessment. This course may involve a mix of assignments and examinations.
