MEET OUR STUDENTS Shaheen Alghofar is one of the many students at Leeds Sixth Form College who received fantastic A level results this year. He received two As and an A* in biology, chemistry and maths respectively. He came to study at Leeds Sixth Form College to re-sit biology and maths as his school sixth form wouldn’t allow him to do so. Despite joining the college two weeks late, Shaheen felt welcomed by the team. He said: “I felt like I belonged straight away. I was accepted and was supported from day one. “Leeds Sixth Form College gave me a second chance. There were occasions when I felt like giving up but my tutors gave me the motivation and encouragement to keep going and I’m so glad I did.

“The college gave me the independence and a taster of what university life would be like. A lot of study was done in my own time and tutors pushed me to go even higher.” Shaheen would like to pursue a career in dentistry while swimming competitively in his spare time. He said: “I want to do something that is academically challenging that would also make an impact in the community. I would love to engage with local people and make a difference in their lives”. Shaheen will now be heading to King’s College London to pursue his dentistry dreams with the hopes of coming back to Leeds to open a practice in the future.

MEET OUR STUDENTS Aida Alfares leaves Leeds Sixth Form College with her head held high on A level results day with three As in chemistry, biology and maths. Originally from Syria, Aida’s journey started with self-taught English when she arrived in the UK four years ago. It took her just three months before she was speaking confidently and was able to apply for GCSEs as a mature student. Aida said: “Arriving in the UK was a challenge at first due to the language barrier. My family had to flee from Syria as it was too dangerous for us. I once heard a bomb explode while I was at school and my mum decided that we had to leave. “Luckily the support at Leeds Sixth Form College has been amazing. The tutors were extremely supportive and made sure I knew what qualifications I needed to be able to pursue dentistry.”

Aida knew from a young age that she wanted to be a dentist. The 21year-old, continued: “I watched a documentary about Syrian refugees and the care they receive. Although there were doctors and healthcare support, there was a lack of dentists and it was that moment that made me want to pursue this career option”. “I wanted to do something that would help others and I love science so it was a natural step to take. I’m so thankful for the support and help I received here at the college. Everyone has been so friendly and welcoming and I’m looking forward to my next steps.” Aida is now considering taking a gap year for some work experience before heading to university. Her goal is to own a dental practice.

MEET OUR STUDENTS Faizah Malik gets a chance to pursue a career in mechanical engineering. Faizah Malik came to Leeds Sixth Form College to complete her A levels as her school sixth form wouldn’t allow her to continue. She didn’t get the GCSE grades she needed in physics and didn’t know what to do.

“There is such a welcoming atmosphere here compared to a traditional school and I immediately felt at ease. Everyone is accepted regardless of your background and I felt like I belonged, which helped me grow.” Faizah will now be heading to Lancaster University to study mechanical engineering.

Two years later, she leaves Leeds Sixth Form College with three Bs in chemistry, physics and maths. She said: “Coming here was a quick decision and I’m so glad I did. “I used to be very shy and worried but this sixth form really made a big difference to my confidence. ENRICH AND EXCEL When reviewing applications, universities and employers look for evidence of a commitment to a chosen subject or job area and a range of skills that go beyond academic study. All students are encouraged to develop these skills and qualities that make them stand out from the crowd by participating in enrichment activities. Enrichment can either be extra-curricular or super-curricular and all Leeds Sixth Form College students are given the opportunity to undertake both. Extra-curricular activities are pursuits and interests that students undertake in addition to their academic studies to show employers and universities what well-rounded individuals they are. Super-curricular activities take an individual's academic study to a higher level and demonstrate a real commitment to a subject. Here at Leeds Sixth Form College, we provide a range of activities to help students develop both strands. All students will participate in both strands of enrichment activities every term. Students who complete at least four enrichment activities in different areas will receive the Leeds Sixth Form Community Award to recognise their

achievements. Many students will also complete 'points boosting subjects such as the Extended Project Qualification and Core Maths to improve their applications to employment, university and apprenticeships. Students will also have the opportunity to be a part of a variety of clubs and societies including NextGen Leaders, Green Club, Leeds Sixth Form College Forum, Student Council and the Leeds City College Students’ Union (LCCSU) as well as local volunteering. All students in their first year of A levels will undertake a weeklong work placement in a work area relevant to their future progression. Last year, students were placed in a variety of areas including law firms, pharmaceutical companies, engineering, business management, nursing, library services, Houses of Parliament, doctors surgeries, dentist surgeries and logistics to name but a few.
