01 Letter, Space, Meaning

The goal of this project was to express the meaning of a word or an idea through spacing, sizing, and placement of letters on the page. The words I chose were “loud” and “divorce.”

2

For “loud,” I focused on making the words growing and getting louder not only with size, but also with the weight. For “divorce” I focused on separation and falling out.

02 Dualities/Dichotomies

The goal of this project was to convey the meaning of the opposite pairings together in one space. “Loud” with “quiet” and “divorce” with “marriage.”

6

For “loud” paired with “quiet” I focused on exaggerating the size and weight of “loud” while making “quiet” small and barely noticeable. For “divorce” paired with “marriage” I focused on separation and falling out, while also focusing on togetherness.

03 Visual Semantics

The goal of this project was to capture the essence of the given artist. My artist was Andy Warhol.

10

I noticed Andy Warhol’s famous celebrity portraits all had a distinct style and I wanted to take that into the project without taking the easy route and using Adobe Illustrator to create overlays of low opacity letters, but I struggled to execute it with only construction paper and paint.

11

I went and bought colored transparent paper to overlay them, but it still looked too digital. The sun was shining into the paper and I fell in love with the shadow and decided to use this to my advantage.

12

13

I brought the pictures into photoshop and played with the colors. I was set on using the beige background because there were so many colors already happening, but I didn’t feel that Warhol factor, so I added a pink background.

01 Hierarchy & Grid

The goal of this project was to analyze the given text and classify into 3 to 5 levels of informational importance; dominate, sub-dominate, subordinate, etc. My given text was an informative guide to a trip to Quebec City.

18

I knew nothing about Quebec City so I had to do my research before I tried sketching anything. One that stood out was that it was surrounded by 2 meeting rivers and I decided to incorporate that into the title. For the other ones, I focused more on hierarchy.

For my experimental one, I decided to keep the idea with two meeting “rivers” and creating a stream with cut out letters. One slight change that changed the entity of the piece was the word, “experience.” It was more playful and it made me want to experience this trip.

02 Making & Breaking the Grid Calendar

The goal of this project was to design a 2019 calendar applying knowledge of Grid Systems with a word to define a concept for the calendar. My word was “vanity done in two different ways.

26

I started with the word “women” and used a mind map to get to a different word. I landed with “vanity” and decided to do it in 2 different ways: eyes/eye makeup & shoes/fashion.

27

I started by illustrating legs and wanting it to be in different positions in a pot, but I decided to make the distinction by color. I used the colors of famous holidays and the months without famous holidays, I used colors that best represented the season.

28

I scrapped my idea of using the eyelashes as the months and days and instead got the idea to use eye makeup and combine it with an eye chart.

29

Since the feet and shoes were illustrated, I felt that “2019 needed to be illustrated as well. However, the illustration was not cohesive with the overall design so I ended up using swatches instead. Since the eyes felt too cut out from photoshop, I ripped pictures from magazines in person in order to make it all work together.

01 Type Specimen Mailer

The goal of this project was to design a four-panel mailer that advertises the typeface alone with a poster for the back to highlight the unique qualities and characteristics of the typeface. I was assigned with the Univers typeface designed by Adrian Frutiger.

36

I focused on taking the typeface name literally by making the type specimen into a whole universe. I also explored having each panel connect together because I associate life with connections.

37

[ ] Univers was the first typeface in which the weights were classified with a numerical system. Using the variety of weights combined give an impression of steadiness and homogeneity.

Univers has a somewhat smaller x-height than Helvetica and the base font sets a little wider. As the weight increases, the personality becomes more apparent.

01 Redesigning a Book Cover

The goal of this project was to redesign a book cover using only typography to express the mood, concept, and/or theme of the book. I chose to the book, Falling Up by Shel Silverstein.

44

When sketching, the first thing that came to mind was balloons. Moving further on sketches, I focused on making the words do exactly what the title was saying, mainly with the concept of things that float or fly.

45

46

I was surprised by the shadows the letters on water made and definitely wanted to incorporate it into the cover. However, I was torn between using the cutout one because it said it all. I felt that each one wasn’t powerful when standing alone.

47

After getting feedback from the class, I got a different perspective. “Falling” was falling, but it wasn’t falling enough for “up” to be up. Since the angle of falling already guided the eye in a direction, I decided to put “up” at the end.
