INTRODUCTION STATEMENT

Q U OTAT I O N

“ There is no end to education. It is not that you read a book, pass an

examination, and finish with education. The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning.” — Jiddu Krishnamurti W H AT I S L E A R N , D O A N D T E AC H TO M E

Learning is an non-stop thing for each person. For graphic designer, rules are the most basic things in that field, but we have to learn how do we think. I learned lots of great things from research, process and critique. So, my project has to be thoughtful and successful. In my future, I hope I can use my design understanding to teach more people what is the good design look like. These works are my most premium possessions. All of them represent a process of learning and understanding during my graduate study career.

SATURATE / THINKING IN COLOR

O BJ E C T I V E

Our aim is to help people understand more color theory knowledge. Encouraging them to get a deep understanding on color theory and stimulate their interest on colors. To help people have a good use on color and we want to provide more functional. When used in the right ways, color can even save on energy consumption. S O LU T I O N

The main goal of this project is to help people get the understanding of basic color theory and let them find an accurate and direct way to use color functional and aesthetic. In fact, there are lack of professional website to help people get information on colors. There is no good visual effect on existing color website which is lack of delightful and it cannot attract people’s attention. So, I designed a new website to help people get information easily and I did user testing many times. Also, I am trying to make this website visual language simple and clean.

RECORD

RECORD / NO PAIN NO GAIN

O BJ ECT I VE

Our aim is to go outside to explore everything to make you create a creative things. This project was to design two panels based on different photos you shot. we needed to collect a best idea from these photos. In addition, we have to find an experimental type and wrote a core of idea to express these photos. S O LU T I O N

I chose a building and a part of parking lot as my primary visual language, and I use quote “ no pain, no gain” for my panel concept. Also, I worked with some graphic elements to make my whole idea more understandable and innovated. I showed contrast with my type. The big type thin, but strong. It shows a persistent spirit of people. And small type focuses on an experiment that showing a feeling of successful and hard working. My whole visual language is from nature and architecture, so I try to use some special angel to capture it’s unique feature and intriguing aspect.

INSPIRE / KELTY REBIRTH

O BJ ECT I VE

Our aim was to find a dead, defunct or dying brand and bring new life to it. Expand the core meaning of the brand, and develop a new visual system and future possibilities to build up a new brand standard guide. Keep the original mission of Kelty, and transform it from an outdoor gear company to empower and encourage people to build a easy and carefree journey and help them achieve adventure and confidence. S O LU T I O N

I chose to rebrand kelty, an outdoor gear manufacture who design outdoor gear for a variety of people, even including kids. The core idea of kelty is about adventure and carefree. Therefore I transformed kelty into a brand that help people achieve adventure and confidence during their journey. To convey this concept, I used duotone gray with bright yellow and an adventurous typeface in visual system.

UNCOVER / TAKE MY EYES OFF YOU

O BJ ECT I VE

Our aim was to play with lights, colors, materials, and type to create mysterious and incredible imagery that revealed the soul of the song, exploring a variety of ways to play with type. Ultimately designed a poster based on the song that we had chosen. Expressing the music through typography, imagery, and layout. Also, there are three spreads which is about a musical band. S O LU T I O N

I chose to work with “ Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”. A love song by Frankie Valli from 1967. It is famous and classic. I showed contrast with type. Big type looks clean and simple, which shows a bold and direct sweet emotion. Small type looks vague and fuzzy, which shows a depressed and disappointed mood. I used pink as a primary color because I want to show the lovely and charming rhythm from this song, and I used two level gray colors to interpret the complicated emotions.

REBUILD / SECOND CUP COFFEE

O BJ ECT I VE

Our aim was to choose a company’s annual report and redesign it. Show the ability to follow the design language of the brand and establish a cohesive visual communication in typography, tables, and charts. The goal is to deconstruct the design language and reconstruct it into an integrated, newly conceived annual report. S O LU T I O N

The company that I chose was second cup coffee. Their vision is to be the coffee brand most passionately committed to quality and innovation. I tried to keep their mission into the design. I attempted to combine imagery and illustration, and make the whole visual, typography looks more identical. The project provided an opportunity to learn how to organize a plenty of information, imagery, tables, and charts to a company with great design. The process of redesigning the annual report was to learn how is a premium coffee company established.

COMBINE / TYPECON CONFERENCE

O BJ ECT I VE

Our aim was to create a hypothetical design conference and design a complete system for it. Shows the ability to create a sophisticated visual concept that matches the aim of the conference. The goal was to reveal typographical skill and visual concept in a high quality system which shows the demand of a design conference. S O LU T I O N

I chose to design the typecon conference which is an annual conference presented by the non-profit Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA) , and most speakers are working in the typography field. For my solution, I tried to combine the conference theme and host city to create an appropriate color, vivid imagery and customized typography to represent the purpose of this conference. According to the major visual language, I designed poster, brochure, website, app, signage, name cards, and tickets a series of visual system.
