Double Trouble. In depth interview with the one and only Kim Kai.

his EXO member is known for having a split persona. The Cute, shy and idiotic Jongin and the bad boy, sexy Kai. Which one is the real one? We asked him a couple of questions in hopes of learning more from him and his split like personality.

Welcome to Distingué! We are deeply honored to have you here with us today. We heard you were very busy with the promotion of you newest album “Love me Right”. “Ah, thank you very much. It’s an honor for me as well. I’m glad to be here!”

First things first, how are you? “I’m doing really well, thank you for asking. Like you mentioned, we are currently promoting our newest album ‘Love me Right’ which is available on Itunes (laughs). We are jam-packed with our schedules, with upcoming concerts and practices. That’s why Distingué is allowing me to finally take a break(laughs).”

Before we begin, what should we call you? “(laughs)I knew you would ask me this question. My real name is Kim Jongin, as a vast majority of you know. Kai is only my stage surname. Funny story; I usually prefer to go by Kai for professional reasons, but I think I want you guys to call me Jongin. I love my name and I don’t get to hear it that often, so by all means, please call me Jongin today!”

Ok, so Jongin, a couple of your fans informed us that you somehow had difficulty keeping your work at work and your personal life at home. Tell us a bit about that. “Right. Well first of all, I don’t consider what I do for a living working. I do it because I love it. I love being in EXO, I’m in love with my job and it’s certainly become a big part of my life. In fact, It’s become such a big part that I’m not trying to separate those two worlds from each other anymore. I remember when I was a trainee, I had a hard time keeping my personal life out of my work. I had a lot of troubles during that time. In comparison to the past, now I’m not looking for the balance between the two, I’m merging them. So what I do at work, I do at home basically. I can’t just separate them completely. (laughs) Of course there are some things that I keep personal more than others though. So you see, I’m not really having trouble keeping my work at work and personal stuff at home since both are really closely related now.”

Distingué I see. So what about that split personality? “I honestly think that’s something my fans created. (laughs) For some people, Kai and Kim Jongin are two completely different people when they are in fact just one, me. I doesn’t really bother me except when they strictly refer to me as Kai. Kai is just a persona. I do understand their point of view though. When I’m in the heat of the action, dancing, in my own little world, maybe I tend to resemble more to Kai. On the other side, when I’m with the members or alone or just simply not in the Kai mood, I think I tend to resemble more to Kim Jongin. And I think that’s something the fans rarely see, the realer me.”

Realer you? “Yes. The Me people don’t see. They think we act the same in front of a camera as we do in real life. Sorry to disappoint, but we’re not(laughs). Maybe I’m revealing too much...”

Jongin, please tell us more about your relationship with the members. How has living with 11 other people under the same roof affected you? Are they keeping up with double agent Kim Kai? “I maintain a really great relationship with all of the other members, which I take pride in. It may be because we’ve been together for a lot of time now or because we all know each other so well. I mean, living with 11 people changes you. For the good and the bad. When we were trainees, I remember being afraid to talk to other people. Now I don’t have that problem anymore because I spend a lot of time with the members. It helped me a lot like it made me suffer a lot too. My privacy took a big toll. With 11 other people, you can’t do as you want, when you want. Especially here in Korea where elders play a major role in our lives. And I’m the second youngest. My showers are always cold(laughs). But really, it looks like I’m in a rough shape but I can’t complain. Everyone is amazing. We all share a bond stronger than anything else. And they don’t really struggle with the Kai/Jongin issue. We all gave ourselves nicknames(laughs). I mean, we know each other really well so we know how to discern fake from real. I’m definitely revealing too much here... (laughs)”

Now Jongin, for the last question. What do you most like about yourself? “Is that a trick question?(laughs) What I like the most about me? If I had to answer dumbly, I would probably say my singing abilities!”

But we heard from EXO’s last album that you had greatly improved! Your fans and us were very surprised by this sudden splurge of talent. “Well it was always there, I just had to exploit it!(laughs) But in all seriousness, I really like the fact that I can concentrate fast. When there’s a lot of noise around me or when I’m distracted, I can easily get back on track and carry on. I never really diverge to anything else either. I stay focused on my task, be it dancing or singing. Adversely, when it’s time to get back to reality, I can snap out of it easily. I really like that about me.”

oh sehun We had the chance to sit down and talk with Oh Sehun after the long Die Jungs photoshoot. The photoshoot took place mainly in Berlin, Germany so we had our German staff ask him a couple of questions. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s our up close and personal talk with the star. an interview by Leeloomika

e first sat down with Sehun in 2012 when he debuted in EXO. EXO has since been a source of inspiration for us and we continuously search for new ways to incorporate their concept to ours. He came in dressed in a fresh new Fendi shirt, definitely one we had never seen, a Starbucks coffee mug in one hand, iPhone 6 in the other. He was the one who chose the place where we would meet and we were surprised when we learned that he had chosen a new hip little place in the middle of busy Berlin. He greeted us in a very polite manner while he took off his mate black Emporio Armani shades. What a wave of freshness we felt. Here’s the interview we conducted with young Oh Sehun.

So, Germany, do you like it? Yeah! Germany is awesome! People here are so cool and chill and super friendly. I also love the food here, it’s the best. I had a strudel earlier and, oh my god, I think I’m in love. Hamburg was also really sweet and I think the architecture is very nice. Very different from Korea. It’s also very green, lots of trees and vegetation you know, which is greatly appreciated. And don’t get me started on the fashion districts. About your photoshoot, we heard you actually came up with the idea of a group shooting? Yes, I did. Flash-back two months earlier in our practice room with two other members, We were talking about how we liked the idea of another photoshoot and were wondering when the next one would be. Kyungsoo gets a call from our manager telling us that we could go home, that we had practiced enough, you know, the usual and everything was alright. And then I come up with the strangest thought about how I love these guys so much, how I don’t want to stop practicing and how much we’re having fun, and there comes the idea of a group shooting. Now the Germany thing was actually Jongin yelling the first country he could think of (laughs). But yeah, basically, this all started with the thought of how I loved to hang out with the members and how our group is a whole bunch of losers and we are actually all losers hanging out together (laughs). We have an amazing sense of unity. That’s how I came up with it (laughs).

Distingué Who is your beauty icon? A definitive beauty icon in my life right now would be Miranda Kerr. She just exhumes femininity so much. She is my definition of a beautiful woman and I respect her a lot. On the male side, I’d like to say my group, EXO, but that would be cheesy (laughs). My male beauty icon is currently Lee Ki Chan. He is just so unique, I love his style and I love how he paved the way for artists like us. He is just a major influence. I love him. What are you listening to right now? Uh, currently my playlist consists of G. Soul, Primary and for sure a little bit of Hyuk Oh. I’m in a R&B, slow jam kind of phase and I’m liking the mood it puts you in. You get that instant sexual feeling listening to them. I love that (laughs) What are you wearing? A combination of the latest Chanel shirts collection and the fall/winter Ralph Lauren pants collection. I like to keep things classy. No, I’m joking (laughs). I’m wearing a pair of ripped jeans I bought when I last went to the States, which is a long time ago (laughs). They are my favorite pair ever so I’m not quite ready to give them up yet. I’m also wearing a pretty basic white shirt I got from Fendi in Korea. Currently in LOVE with that brand and I don’t even know why. And my shoes are Chanyeol’s, other EXO member. I didn’t steal them I promise, I was just in a hurry so if you’re reading this Chan, I’ll make it up to you (laughs). We see you’re wearing Amporio shades. Any reason why? (laughs) Amporio has always been a fashion go-to for me. I love the way the designs contrast perfectly with real life. These shades were actually given to me as a gift from a dear friend in China, which I salute. What else are you working on currently? You still have some free time? (laughs) I do. I’m currently filming for a drama that’s coming next fall, so keep your eyes out for that. Besides that, when I get free time, I spend it doing stuff with the members. Mostly sleeping though (laughs), but I like getting some quality time with people I care about.

Distingué Who is your biggest inspiration? When you think Oh Sehun, you automatically think icon but who do you idolize? I have so many... I’m having a hard time choosing (laughs). Right now, my biggest inspiration is my dad. He always encouraged me to do what I wanted in life and to never give up my dreams and what I liked to do. He actually called me recently to tell me that he was proud of me and that he loved me. He worked hard to provide for our family and is as tough as an iron bar. He’s the most interesting man I know and tells the best dad jokes (laughs). I have a lot of admiration and respect for my old man. If I can become half the dad he was, I’ll be happy with myself (laughs). - we’re long distance. Traveling from China to Korea and from Korea to China every two weeks can sure put a toll on us. It’s very challenging but as I often say, It’s not about the final result, it’s about the journey. And I’m right because at the end of the day, when we’re done traveling and we’re cuddling, us two alone, not a care in the world, that’s when we realize that it’s all worth it in the end and that we’d do it again and again if we had to.

Anyone on you love radar currently? (laughs) Well, I can tell you I’ve been off the market for a while now... What’s it like falling in love for Oh Sehun? It’s a mix between constant joy and the immense pain of not being able to see that person all the time. I see it as an amazing experience. Falling in love removes everything you previously knew about love. It changes you so much. I can’t describe it in words. Being deep in love hurts so much but feels so good at the same time. I always thought falling in love was more about finding the right one when it’s actually about finding happiness with that person, your soul-sister. And what’s especially difficult with our relationship is that -

Any last words for your German fans? Thank you guys so much for alway supporting us, I will always be thankful for that. Please wait a bit more for EXO’s comeback, it’s coming! Suho is a completely normal adult like any other, except when he’s doing what he does best, being EXO’s leader. We wanted to meet him for a while so we invited him to the studio for a little talk over a hot cup of his favourite stress relief drink, coffee. Here is the thought provoking interview we held with the honest leader of South Korea’s biggest boy group. First off, Mr. Junmyeon, welcome to Distingué!

We heard the last months have been quite rough for you and for EXO in You must be exhausted after a week of this constant general. schedule. Well, you’re right. I’m doing okay right now which is better We do have pretty big days, yes. It’s not as difficult as it then the last two months. I try to keep things as positive as sounds because we’re used to it by now. But say we’re having I can. We haven’t been in the best of shapes lately and we a comeback, then for sure it’ll be a lot more hectic and then have to make the most of it. But I’m doing okay, thanks. we can become overwhelmed by all of this. But we always come by somehow(laughs). What’s it like being EXO’s leader? Right, well being a leader is a big job but I like it. I mean, taking care of the members is what I do best at this point(laughs).

Do you ever worry for the other members?

Yes I do, more often than never honestly. I wish I wouldn’t but after seeing members leave because of either their injuries or mistreatment and whatnot, it kind of made me a lot more Take us on an average Kim Junmyeon day. aware of their well being. I see them struggling during the little hours at night. I become like this crazy mom and immeI wake up early, usually by 7 I’ve woken up every member diately tell them to rest for a bit. How do you not break under all the stress?

I wish we had clones(laughs). When I’m under a lot of stress, what I like to do is pour myself a nice hot bubble bath, light a couple candles, pour a glass of wine and relax. It honestly feels extra great. When I don’t have time to take a relaxing bath, because believe it or not, it happens a lot(laughs), I listen to relaxing music. I also believe I have an extraterrestrial force when it comes to dealing with stress(laughs).

Do you ever feel like quitting at all?

Yes and no. It depends a lot on the circumstances. Ask me on the day of our comeback and I’d probably say yes. But ask me at the end of promotions and I’ll never think about it for a second. It fluctuates(laughs).

Do you regret your career choice? Never in a million years. Entering SM may not have been the best decision ever but I never said it was the worst either. My life took an immediate 180 degree turn after. I’m not telling you I wouldn’t do anything else though. If I hadn’t passed the auditions, I would’ve probably just went on with my life like normal. In any case, If I wasn’t discovered trough SM’s street casting, I probably would’ve went in entertainment anyway. But I have to admit that I’ve always wanted to sing

ever since I was in elementary school.

Let’s talk more about the members. What made you become so protective of them?

(laughs) Well, the main reason is because I know what they’ve been through. The trainee period is rough, I’ve known that since I was 16. I understand that it’s not always easy and that you often want to let everything down and go to sleep forever(laughs), I know I did. The second reason is because I’ve come to care a lot about them. We’re like this big band of brothers and we would never let each other down and we’d do anything for one another. But maybe I just care a little bit too much(laughs).

Right. And what was it like for you during trainee period?

My trainee period was pretty lengthy since I was scouted in 2006. I think I did 7 years before finally debuting. Now that I think about it, it does seem like a pretty long time but we were so avidly pushed by our desire to debut that it passed by in a flash. In terms of difficulty, the hardest part was definitely the schedule and lack of freedom. You’re a sixteen year old who likes to sleep a lot and likes to laze around a bit but then you can’t do any of that anymore. You lose quite a bit of freedom and it takes some time to adjust. Sleeping was probably the most difficult thing to do since we didn’t have time to actually sleep. Luckily I went through it and came back without a scratch(laughs)!

You said earlier that you never wanted to quit but surely there must’ve been times when you thought about it.

Oh for sure. Each time we’d go to sleep at 3 or 4 in the morning, exhausted, still sweating from practice, I’d lay down in my bed and just think Everything would be so much easier if I just quit all of this, you know. It’s during these times that we’re the most vulnerable, so yeah I did think about it, I’m not going to lie. What’s your favorite thing about being an idol?

That is such a good question (laughs). I was just thinking about it with Lay this morning on our way to a broadcast. I think a lot of people would say the attention it gets you or the fact that there are of advantages to being an idol. I don’t completely disagree with them but for me, the best thing is that I get to do what I love for people who love it, with people I love. And this is not a given for everyone. I consider myself very lucky for that. And like Lay said this morning, having all these people loving you and admiring you is quite the boost for our confidence and our ego (laughs). We don’t have any more time but thank you very much for this wonderful interview, we had fun and we hope you did too! Thanks for passing by! No thank you very much! I’ll come back soon (laughs).

Le mot de la fin Editor’s corner - Catherine Distingué first started when my mind thought it would be a great idea to never have free time again. I thought, why not? And so here we are, a month later, with the first Distingué issue. Distingué came about for me as an escape from the real world and it allowed me to do what I truly liked doing, graphic design. It is still at an early stage and It’ll need a lot of improvements but I still grew fond of this little thing. Distingué became my little protégé for a month and I am not ready to part just yet so I think an October issue is in order. I am already working on it too. Go tell all your friends about it, your family, your grandma and your dog, Distingué is in town. I hope you will enjoy this first issue, if you don’t, that’s too bad, I’m sorry.
