ME molly and emily designs

i am the m in me, molly and emily designs. hopefully, this magazine will show you “me” and allow you to understand the simplicity of the elements and principles of design as i have learned. being born and raised in rural georgia has taught me much about my environment. i love the plantation lifestyle and architecture that i grew up around and i don’t think that will ever leave my system. although most of my being is rooted here in the south, i am very much attracted to new ideas about design. keeping it simple, keeping me happy, and keeping my home beautiful is what my design mind thinks about every day. in this magazine, we strive to open the doors of our simple thinking minds (although the doors of my mind may be painted pink) and allow you to see in and feel like designers as you flip through the pages.

ME molly and emily designs

i am the E in me, molly and emily designs. the purpose of this magazine is to make it easy for readers to understand the elements and principles of design by providing a simple way for people to read our magazine. i was born in jacksonville, florida and have lived there my whole life. fortunately i have grown up with the opportunity to enjoy both city and rural life. even though i have grown up in jacksonville, my whole life i have grown up riding horses so i have probably spent half my life on the farm as well. because horses and design are two important aspects in my life, my goal is to one day design barns for horses. this way i can incorporate both of the things i love into one career. hopefully this magazine will show readers how simple and easy design can be with the laidback style that our magazine portrays. current design trends ME

molly and emily designs

Over the years designer trends have changed drastically. Sometimes these changes are inspired by what is practical and sometimes they just occur because of a well known person’s opinion. But for whatever reason they occur, people tend to take these changes very seriously because they want to be able to keep up with the latest trends. This year it seems as though very bright and vibrant colors are in style. Recently, whenever I have gone shopping, I have noticed that most all apparel is being sold in almost every color of the rainbow including everything from jeans, to sweaters and winter overcoats. I feel as though for a while the theme was to wear monotones and muted colors as to not stand out too much, but now we are coming out of that phase and into a phase where the goal is to stand apart from the crowd and not look the same as everyone around you. Modern houses are now being decorated with bright colors as well instead of just neutral furniture and colored accents. It is more common to see a bright red couch or purple chair than it has ever been before. Another big trend in the design world now a days, besides vibrant colors, is “going green”. This means trying to conserve natures recourses and reduce the use of harmful chemicals. We are beginning to realize what negative effects we are having on our planet and so now the theme is attempting to reverse those effects by going green. New homes are now being built using natural resources and recycled materials, and with more open window space to let in natural light, and use solar power energy instead of artificial lights, so hopefully we will only need the use of artificial lights at night. Skye lights are also being put VIII IX

in to replace ceiling lights as a way to naturally light up bathrooms and other rooms that cant have many windows because of limited wall space. This cuts cost for people in this time of economic depression while also helping to save the planet. Landscaping has also become very popular over the years. It provides a great natural look to homes and helps to produce more oxygen for the planet by planting more trees and plants. Going along with the all natural theme, it is now becoming more frequent to see stone gardens instead of mulch or sod. Stones are less expensive to use because they already exist so they are not man made and do not contain harmful chemicals, like some sod and mulch can contain. Also there is less maintenance with having a stone garden because it does not require any water or fertilizer to survive. To advertise the green theme, the color green has become very popular as well. It portrays the idea more efficiently to the general population because it gives a literal meaning to it. All of these trends effect our everyday lives in one way or another weather we just see them in passing or apply them to our own lives, it is important to understand the world and how it is changing so that way we can make our best effort to understand it.

the straight horizontal lines in this tall dresser are very evident in the drawers. straight horizontal lines likes these make a room more clean cut and feel more organized. using a mix of straight and curved lines create a more comfortable, traditional home feel. two friends perry, georgia

in my home, space can sometimes be an issue. having a tall vertical cabinet such as this one is a good way to add extra storage space and provide a great look. - emily jones

straight vertical lines have a tendency to draw the eye up and down making spaces look and seem much more open. If trying to make spaces look more open and less crowded, then adding taller more narrow objects instead of short fat object to a space is a good idea

angular line

i like to see angular lines either on the floor or ceiling of busy hallways because it helps show people where to go and move traffic along. - emily jones

jones residence jacksonville, florida

angular lines, like in this wood flooring, are many times used to guide people through a room. often times the pattern on the floor, will dictate how quickly and in what direction people will move through a room. 1c

curved flowing line

americas mart atlanta, georgia

these curved flowing lines are stories of a huge building. Since this building is so big, the curved lines make it more digestible for the eye and make us more comfortable than if they were straight lines with hard turns.

1d

curved tightly

tightly curved lines, such as railing on a staircase, are used to draw the eye. many staircases have tightly curved lines for this very purpose.

smooth texture something that has a smooth texture is something that feels smooth to the touch. this table is made of a smooth wood that has no rough edges or areas on it. most people prefer to have smooth textured surfaces in their home because of the way that they look and feel.

scott residence athens, georgia

personally, i like the surfaces in my home to be smooth because they are more inviting to touch than a rough textured surface. emily jones

2a

rough texture

a rough texture is very commonly found on rocks among nature. the rocks underneath this water would have a rough feel to them if you were to actually touch them.

cedar street cashiers, north carolina

2b

real texture real texture is actual texture that looks and feels real. this brick column has a rough texture to it that you may not know without actually felling it.

mirko athens, georgia

2c

implied texture implied texture is something that looks like it has a texture on it but to the touch it is actually smooth. many object have this type of implied texture to give the eye some contrast but at the same time still gives such objects such as walls, a smooth feeling.

delta gamma athens, georgia

2d

non-reflective texture, such as this woven table, is any type of texture that does not reflect light, weather it be natural or created light. because of the woven pattern on this table it is not smooth enough to reflect any light that hits it.

scott residence athens, georgia

non-reflective texture 2e

reflective texture these picture frames are an example of reflective texture because with light, they reflect anything that is in front of them. they add more character to the frames because instead of them always being one color they can be a multitude of colors depending on what they are reflecting at the time. scott residence athens, georgia

space i simple, happy, beautiful living

3

positive space jones residence jacksonville, florida a solid piece of furniture, such as this couch, that takes up a lot of positive space is a good way to fill a large empty room. it provides enough furniture to the room without causing the space to look to cluttered. 3a

negative space objects that are not solid, but very open and light are good to use in smaller rooms because they create negative space making smaller rooms seem less crowded. keane residence alpharetta, georgia 3b

crowding

http://360homestaging.info/yahoo_site_admin/assets/i mages/29.13195912.jpg

crowded spaces, like this one, do not provide the proper amount of distance between the couch and chairs for people to be comfortable in their environment.

3c

territorially territorially has to do with having enough space between furniture for each person to feel comfortable and not crowded. they say there should be about 8 feet distance between each person, which is about how far these bed are from each other.

geometric shape a geometric shape is usually a symmetrical shape like a square or a triangle. geometric shapes are used in design to often send a message or guide the eye. these shapes here were used as bathroom tile along the floor and a wall. keane residence alpharetta, georgia 4a

organic shape organic shapes come from nature and do not look man made. like flowers and flowing lines, organic shapes are used most often for comfort in design.

organic shapes are very comforting to me. i respond very well to soft curved lines instead of sharp hard lines. -molly rumph

abstract shape the abstract shape found in this painting is a simplified version of a persons face. although it is not drawn to scale or look exactly like a face, we are still able to recognize it by the overall shape and features we see. davis residence jacksonville, florida 4c

non-representational shape many famous pieces of art are non representational shapes. they are created by the artist not to look like anything in particular or that already exists, they are just meant to be new and unique.

miller residence jacksonville, florida 4d

static shape static shapes are shapes and elements in design that are not moving. in design, static elements in a room are fixed permanently. these examples of static shapes are found commonly in older, historic houses. the shapes may appear to be moving in space, but actually they permanently fixed to the ceilings, walls, and doors in these houses.

phi mu athens, georgia

4e

dynamic shape a dynamic shape of a piece or furniture or an architectural feature (as shown here) can add a flow or rhythmic gesture to a room in your home. dynamic shapes can help move the room and show a person where to go in the space.

Geometric form

scott residence athens, georgia

a 3d geometric form is an object with four flat, even sides that make a shape. this box is a 3d geometric shape and is used as a decorative object in a house because of the rooster print on two sides of the box. 4g

natural form

scott residence athens, georgia

natural forms, such as flowers, are a great way to add variety to any room because they are simple enough, but at the same time can add a bit of a flare. they also give a home a more natural look because they are bringing the outside in.

I like to add flowers to my house because they are a-nice way to add color and variety. emily jones

4h

abstract form as a whole may not be recognized as something we know, but part of it we may be able to recognize from nature and other objects we have seen before. in this form, we recognize the lady bug insect’s shape but it is not doing its normal function of being and insect, instead it is being used as a clock.

the quality of natural light is something that we should never take for granted. it is so much brighter and more powerful that artificial light will ever be. when someone is sick, most people believe that going out into the sunlight can help them feel better. artificial light does not prove the same effect.

floor lamp “ phi mu athens, georgia

floor lamps can add either a little or a lot of light to a room. they can be placed in a room to for reading purposes or even to help light the whole room. they do not take up very much space at all and can be moved around from room to room very easily.

floor lamps are an inexpensive purchase so anytime you see one in a store you like, go ahead and buy it! you will be able to use it one day! -molly rumph

my favorite type of mood lighting is a chandelier in a bed room. it will add the romantic and whimsical touch you are looking for. -molly rumph

before adding mood lighting to a room, i believe you must first take a look at how much ambient light you have in the room so far. if you have enough ambient light already, you can add to the mood of the room with mood lighting. 5i

art lighting can be the “wow” factor in any room. it can serve to illuminate a room or just be the focal point, like this turquoise chandelier shown. It is made with colored crystal hung from a old, white static ceiling.

when building your new home, think about where the sun will be at different times of the day in different rooms in your home so you can avoid having glare from natural light. -molly rumph

glare from natural light

rumph residence montezuma, georgia

glare from natural light can be caused by light entering a window at a certain time of day when the sun hits the window and causes glare inside. often times, glare from natural light can be bothersome and you will not want to use that room at that certain time of day. 5l

glare from general lighting in this bathroom there is always glare from the general lighting from above and the lamp below. the glare makes it almost impossible to put on make up and tae out your contacts. Be aware of where you place lights above countertops. rumph residence montezuma, georgia 5m

furniture is built to scale for humans so that they are in proportion to the size. children's furniture is built to a smaller scale so that it is in proportion with them just like normal furniture is in proportion with grown adults.

I have heard that studies show that children with furniture their size feel more comfortable at home in their environment, and there for have done better in school. - emily jones

symbolic scale scale determines the size of something based on how big or small it is compared to other things of the same kind. for example, you can determine how big a car is based on how it compares to other cars. or how big a dog is compared to other dogs. www.londonclique.com/wpcontent/uploads/2009/09/big-cap-vs-small-cap.jpg 9b

successful

space function

successful space function is often times hard to achieve in a small, boxy room as shown here. it is hard to get the maximum seating without feeling crowded. this space is successful because crowding is not an issue, yet there is still space for 6 to have an intimate conversation.

straight line groupings are not often used in a home setting but mostly in a commercial setting. when straight line groupings are found in a home setting, it is dominantly used for space saving and traffic flow. in the picture shown a couch and chair are placed on a wall in the back of a large living room so that traffic can flow easily in front the grouping. this type of grouping is not ideal for conversation and intimacy.

l-shaped furniture groupings are very commonly found in living rooms across the country. when furniture is grouped in a l-shape, conversation is easily created and there is still room for a focal point (such as a t.v. or a fireplace) on the opposite side of the l.

u-shaped groupings allow for optimum seating. as shown in the picture, this t.v. space is surrounded by seating for 8 with only one piece of u-shaped furniture. u-shaped groupings can not only be established by u shaped furniture but also a grouping of chairs, couches, and ottomans.
