GPS TEAMS COMPETE IN FL Waltham, MA, 5th January, 2015; Whilst the winter chill has begun in Massachusetts, four GPS NPL teams traveled to Florida over the holidays to participate in college showcase events. The BU15, BU16 and BU17 NPL teams competed in the prestigious Disney Showcase held at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando whilst the GU17 participated in the NPL College Showcase in further North in Palm Coast. The events attracted a number of college coaches and are an integral part of GPS High School age College Placement Program with the GU15 & GU16 NPL attended the CASL Showcase earlier in December. As well as the exposure provided, the games give each team competitive matches during the New England winter, following their return from High School soccer. From a results perspective, all four teams returned with positive experiences. The highlight was a Championship for the U17 NPL Boys who posted a 2-0-1 record in group play before defeating Auberndale SC (NY) 3-0 in the final. The BU15 also went undefeated in the section and were unfortunate not to progress to the finals, after draws with Colorado Rush, Triangle United and a 3-0 victory vs Boca (FL). Current US Club Soccer National Champions, the BU16 NPL competed well in the highest level bracket but narrow defeats to Alpharetta (GA) and Loudon SC (VA) cost them progression through the group, despite defeating Ohio Premier. Over in Palm Coast, Hamblin’s side went 2 and 1 with victories over East Meadow (4-3) and FSA (2-1). The team’s only loss was against Penn Fusion, in a thrilling match, which saw the Pennsylvanian outfit score a last minute winner to come out on top 4-3 victors. TACTICAL ZONE FUTSAL - THE LAWS OF THE GAME. With parts of Global Premier Soccer playing Futsal through the winter, players, coaches and parents need to have a clear understanding of the rules of Futsal. Many rules are the same as a regular soccer game, but some have subtle differences and some major differences. Explained below are some of the more complicated and different rules to normal soccer. Substitutions • An unlimited number of substitutions can be made • Substituted player must depart court to team bench area; • Player cannot come on until substituted player leaves the court of play • All substitutions are roll on roll off throughout the game Time Outs • Teams are entitled to a one-minute time-out in each period • Time outs do not roll over top 2nd half of play • Team out can only be called when your team is in possession Fouls • Fouls are penalized with a direct free kick, penalty kick or indirect free kick. Accumulated Fouls: • Beginning with the sixth accumulated foul in each half, the other team is awarded a penalty shot from the second penalty line for each foul.

FUTSAL

Goal clearance • The goal clearance is a method of restarting play. Goalie restarts the game using the hands and has 4 seconds to play the ball out. • A goal clearance is awarded when the whole of the ball passes over the end line, either on the ground or in the air, having last touched a player of the attacking team. • A goal may not be scored directly from a goal clearance. Four-second count when the ball is in play • Each time that a team’s goalkeeper is in possession of the ball while it is in play and in his own half of the pitch, one of the referees must visibly perform the four-second count. Play-back to the Keeper Rule • When keeper plays the ball out (after making a save or after a goal clearance), he/she is not allowed to receive the ball back unless the other team touches the ball or the ball goes out of bounds (kick in). • If ball goes out of bounds or the opposing team touches the ball, the goalkeeper can be used as an outlet once (using hands is NOT allowed at this point) and has 4 seconds to play the ball back out with his/her feet. Futsal is a very fast paced game so having a clear understanding of the rules allows players to operate at a higher level, react at a quicker speed and make faster decisions. Futsal is recognized as one of the best option for player development. It is especially great for improving speed of play, technical skills, decision-making and fitness. TOP 10 REASONS TO PLAY FUTSAL:

Kick-Ins • When the whole of the ball crosses the touchline, either on the ground or in the air, or touches the ceiling of the facility, a kick-in is awarded the opposing team. Position of kick-in • At the moment of delivering ball, the kicker must have one foot on the touch-line or on the ground outside the pitch • Player must kick the ball, which must be stationary, either from the point where it left the pitch or on the ground outside it at a distance no greater than 25 cm from that point. • The ball must be kicked within 4 seconds of being ready to do so failure to do so will result in the other team gaining possession

HIDE & SEEK The Phenomenon of Social Loafing in Sport Why do players go missing in games? Why do players go unnoticed in practice? How do we get the most out of every player?

WHAT IS SOCIAL LOAFING?

Since the evolution of modern sport, coaches, analysts, managers and fans have always questioned why an athlete is unable to deliver and perform to their potential every day. It is frustrating to see excellent, talented players underachieve and under exert themselves in practices and games. Modern Sport Psychology has identified Social Loafing as one of the largest contributors to this mystery. Social Loafing is the phenomenon by which an individual will not try their hardest in a larger group because they think their lack of effort will go unnoticed. Simply put, players think they can hide and get away with not trying all the time. They will try to remain on the edges of play and limit their involvement. Players will believe that they can stay under the radar and the team will still be successful as there are others who can take up their share of the work. Obviously in individual or small sided sports such as tennis this is not an issue. In soccer however, coaches must be aware of it.

Early research in the sports of tug of war and rowing, found that individuals tried their hardest in 2 person events. As the team grew to 4, 6, or 8 the individual level of exertion was less. Trying to explain and understand why an individual would hide and not try is perplexing - as surely they want to win?!

In younger team games at 4v4 or 6v6 it will be difficult for players to shy away from the game and will be required to exert maximal effort in order to achieve individual and team goals. However, coaches of 8v8 or 11v11 teams should keep an eye out for players who attempt to get carried or swept along by their team mates. There are many reasons a player will consciously or subconsciously begin to social loaf in practices and/or games. They are commonly one or a combination of, but not limited to the following reasons:

The most important consideration of social loafing is how we as coaches can help players who exhibit this, and prevent players from developing these habits. Here a few helpful tips for coaches: 1. Reduce the size of groups. The ideal group size for technical practice is 6-8 players [Martin, 2012]. 2. Create a mistake accepting environment. Mistakes are brilliant! Challenge players to make them. 3. Talk to players. Rather than instantly shout ‘Work harder!’, explore why your player is not at their best. 4. Social Loafing is not always a punishable behavior. It is a habit players need help to break. Here are the key things for players to remember: 1. Mistakes are brilliant! Do not hide. Be confident to express yourself and take risks - your coach wont mind! 2. Maximum effort is a coaches minimum expectation. Regardless of talent, effort is always noticeable. “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard” Kevin Durant

PHYSICAL ZONE Speed, Agility & Quickness As a large portion of US Youth Soccer transition into the indoor season, the opportunity presents itself to put a real emphasis on technical skills and SAQ training due to many teams working in tight indoor spaces. SAQ training aims to improve a players foot work, co-ordination and agility. It also build strength, stamina and anaerobic endurance. SAQ is a great way to work on younger players co-ordination and fundamental movements and the use of a ball can easily be incorporated with ladder work to create a fun intense soccer session. Below are 3 exercises that can be performed using an agility ladder. The exercises range from simple to complex movements. Click here to view the Soccer Assassins performing some ladder exercises

GOALKEEPING ZONE FOCUS: FUTSAL GOALKEEPING

Not so long ago, a goalkeeper’s role was to preventing the ball entering into the goal. In futsal, a goalkeeper needs to be much more than that. They have to be good with their feet too, act as a fifth defender when dealing with long balls and even participates in some attacking plays. If you look at a futsal match you see that the goalkeeper constantly active during the game.

Key Points to BEING an Effective Futsal GOALKEEPER POSITIONING Stay big and reduce the target for the attacker. Get off your line to narrow down the angle for the striker. Make goal appear smaller to attacker. Focus on the ball, rather than the player in possession (it’s the ball you need to save).

DISTRIBUTION Overarm throw is used to move the ball down the court quickly over opponents. GK can throw from goal to goal to launch counter attacks Under arm throw is used to maintain possession over a short distance. Ball must be rolled smoothly to team mate to allow for easy control.

USE OF FEET A Futsal GK is also a vital part of the attack, often joining the team in the opposing half as an extra attacker to create space. A GK’s ability to make a save and then use their feet to start an attack can be a very effective weapon in a game, allowing their team to outnumber the opponent on the court.

COACHING ZONE FOCUS: HEADING At GPS we run regular Professional Development sessions for our staff to maintain high standards and reinforce alignment with the GPS philosophy. This also gives the opportunity for our staff to share and discuss new ideas about player development. To win games teams must pose the ability to score goals. This is a difficult skill to master. There are a number of ways to score a goal and a variety of ways to shoot the ball at goal. Heading the ball is one way of scoring a goal but one of the most difficult. This edition’s coaching zone is focused on heading and the various ways to execute an attacking header.

Warm Up - Attacking Headers Set Up/Rules - Split players into two teams - One player starts in the coned goal between the teams - Coach serves a ball for player to attack with a header. - If player scores the join opposite line. - If player misses they become new GK - Coach to serve balls quickly to keep high intensity to game Coaching Points Attack the ball with power & purpose Use forehead to contact ball. Head ball down towards ground. Progression Team competition - Team with most goals wins.

PARENT ZONE HEADING IN YOUTH SOCCER In December 2015, U. S. Soccer announced limitations on the use of headers in youth soccer as part of the resolution in a concussion lawsuit which was filed against U.S. Soccer, United States Youth Soccer Association, American Youth Soccer Organization, U.S. Club Soccer and the California Youth Soccer Association.

To help reduce concussions in youth soccer, a new initiative will be launched to focus on four areas that include prevention and education, according to a U.S. Soccer press release: - Education and awareness about concussions. - ‘Return to play’ protocols after a suspected concussion for youth players. - Changes to substitution rules in the game so players can be evaluated for a concussion without fear of penalty. - Banning heading the ball for children 10 and under and limiting its use in practice in the 11 to 13 age group.

GPS will continue to educate their staff on concussion protocols. All GPS staff must complete concussion training before being eligible to coach for the club. Staff must complete an online educational concussion test prior to becoming head coach of any team or coach of any session. It is important to note that while these rules will be mandated for the U.S. Soccer and the other defendants and their youth teams and academies in the coming months, for most local youth organizations where these organizations don’t have jurisdiction, the new guidelines can only be recommendations.

GPS has also edited and changed the clubs developmental curriculum to fall in line with the new heading guidelines so that all heading is taken out of u10 and below sessions, with limited heading involved in the u11 u13 age groups.

GPS also leads coach education sessions for it’s staff and The initiative will not only include information about head will be educating staff further on coaching the heading injuries, but also other important player safety topics such technique and sessions that will promote this technique with the appropriate age groups. as heat-related illness and injury prevention.

GPS AT COLLEGE GPS Juniors and Seniors players from within the club’s Regional and NPL teams participated in personal college meetings this weekend as part of the club’s College Placement Program. The Boys meetings were conducted by Peter Bradley (Director of Coaching) with James Hamblin (Girls Director) meeting with female players within the club. Each meeting had players and parents discussing potential schools, majors and, of course, the soccer element. Upon conclusion of the meeting players are provided an action plan to implement over the upcoming months with GPS coaches and staff providing continued communication in that period. “The college meetings are an essential part of the support GPS provides to our High School age athletes,” said Peter Bradley. “The opportunity to sit down and assess where each player is in the planning process and provide advice and direction is critical to ensure we are fulfilling our promise to prepare GPS players for their future,” said Bradley.

Global Premier Soccer [GPS] and The Sport Source® were pleased to announce they joined forces to provide a Members Only College Center to support all GPS families with college readiness. Less than 2% of all youth soccer organizations are providing their families any meaningful guidance or support when it comes to the college placement process. GPS is preparing to provide its families, starting in grade 9, access to college support to help parents be prepared and ready to help their child through their first major life choice. The partnership with GPS and The Sport Source provides our members with access to their two signature products: MATCHFIT and E-COLLEGE COUNSELOR. “Each player is unique and their goals are different. That’s why our Members Only College Center includes access to mentor support to help families with everything from admissions to financial aid. Our goal is to help kids plan and prepare for college and beyond” said Steve Quinones, College Placement Director for GPS.

The College Placement Program (CPP) is a multi-faceted approach by GPS to help our players and parents be knowledgeable and in control of their college selection process as they progress. The club hosts two general presentations in the fall with one targeted towards freshman and sophomores, and the other for juniors and seniors. These presentations are filmed and then passed out to GPS players across the club’s 12 States and territories. “The Members Only College Center provides families with support they need, starting in grade 9, and helps families learn how to create a personal plan and provides them with instant access to 5800 Universities and 5000 college coaches.” said Bradley.

15

The college center will allow players too: - Create a player resume - Draft e-mails to coaches - Access 5000 college coach contact details - Information on 5800 Colleges - Check eligibility for colleges - Create a personal plan for the college process If any player is yet to receive their log in details to The Sport Source or want further information on our College Placement Program, please contact: Louise McFrederick College Placement Program Coordinator Email: lmcfrederick@globalpremiersoccer.com
