Varanasi (also known as Benares, Banaras, or Kashi), one of the oldest living cities, dates back to 1200 BC. Kashi forms a crescent shape along the holy Ganges, which flows towards the north. The sacred city has grown along its western bank, facing the rising sun and making the ghats sacred for all Hindu rituals.
79%
The land bank towards the east, is a flood plain which preserves the natural ecosystem. The natural setting of Kashi, its mystique and the continuity of ancient tradition, all blend to create and preserve a unique lifestyle known as “Banarasi”.
