Highway construction workers more likely to be killed or injured during a work zone crash than vehicle drivers or passengers, officials urge motorists to slow down, drive alert in highway work zones Sixty eight percent of the nation’s highway contractors had motor vehicles crash into their construction work zones during the past year, according to the results of a new highway work zone study conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials added that the

study found those work zone crashes are more likely to kill construction workers than they are to kill vehicle operators or passengers. “Any time your jobsite is just a few feet away from fast moving traffic, things can get a little too exciting,” said Tom Brown, the chair of the association’s national highway and transportation division and president of Vista, CA based Sierra Pacific West. “Since construction workers don’t get the option of wearing seatbelts, they are more likely to be killed

in a work zone crash than motorists are.” Brown said that 28 percent of contractors report their workers were injured during work zone crashes this past year, and 18 percent had at least one construction worker killed during those crashes. While they are less likely to kill motor vehicle operators and passengers, highway work zone crashes do pose a significant risk for people in cars, Brown added. He noted that more than 50 percent of work zone crashes injure vehicle operators or users

impact on construction schedules and costs, Brown added. He said that 35 percent of con-

tractors reported that work zone crashes during the past year forced them to temporarily shut down construction activity. Those delays were often lengthy, as 47 percent of those project shutdowns lasted two or more days, Brown noted. Association officials said that 75 percent of contractors nationwide feel that tougher laws, fines and legal penalties for moving violations in work zones would reduce injuries and fatalities. And 66 percent of contractors nationwide agree that more frequent safety training for workers could help. They added that many firms and the association have crafted highway safety programs. But Brown suggested that the best way to improve safety was for motorists to be more careful while driving through highway work zones. “The easiest way to improve work zone safety is to get motorists to slow down and pay attention,” Brown said. “When motorists see construction signs and orange barrels, they need to take the foot off the gas, put the phone down and keep their eyes on the road.” The work zone safety study was based on a nationwide survey of highway construction firms the association conducted in March and April of this year. Nearly 400 contractors completed the survey. Reprinted with permission from the AED News, online edition.

New fog system design and skewable power crown adjuster improve flexibility of the Terex Bid-Well 4800 paver CANTON, SD — Today's Terex® Bid-Well 4800 bridge paver boasts new features that improve the machine's flexibility and ease of operation. The new fogging system offers adjustable and removable spray nozzles that make the system even more user friendly. Located on each side of the paving rollers, at the burlap drag and drag pan, the independently adjustable nozzles can be positioned to direct the fog where it is required to adjust for wind, mix conditions or to certain specifications. New polyethylene tubing eliminates corrosion within the system to improve system uptime. The 4800's new skewable power crown adjuster can be mounted inline on a straight paver or positioned on the frame at the skew when contractors are paving decks with a skew angle. This optional system greatly simpli-

fies making crown adjustments when paving at extended machine widths. The power crown adjust allows the operator to make quick crown adjustments on the fly as the paving carriage reaches the end of the paver. Two new 23 hp Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) Tier 4 compliant gas engines power the 4800. One engine powers machine function and movement, while the second engine provides dedicated power to the paving carriage for more consistent paving operation. The new engines meet current emissions standards, improve the operating environment around the machine and provide more fuel efficiency than previous engine models. As one of the most flexible pavers on the market, the Terex Bid-Well 4800 paver on display at

World of Concrete in Las Vegas — Central Hall, Terex booth No. C5946 — is equipped with several options that tailor suit the paver to meet jobsite conditions. The available 15-inch Rota-Vibe™ system on the show machine's paving carriage is 30 percent larger than the standard system. This provides longer machine advancements, advantageous when paving streets and highways. The paver's two double flighted augers efficiently meter the concrete in front of the paving carriage. Dual, 5-foot long paving rollers provide a superior

finish to the concrete surface. The paving carriage on display is equipped with the available dual drag pan arrangement, which helps contractors achieve a better concrete seal and enables the pans to drag directly to the side of the slab.

Command and control with middle weight Volvo wheel loaders The G-Series wheel loaders from Volvo Construction Equipment are the versatile L60G, L70G and L90G midsized machines. Not only does the loader arms’ patented TP linkage offer superior breakout and lifting forces, they also remain perfectly parallel throughout the lifting range — ensuring exceptional load stability. This combination of power throughout the lift cycle, parallel movement and long reach makes the L60G, L70G and L90G ideal in material handling jobs and where fast work cycles are needed. Suitable for a wide range of other applications, these jobsite workhorses can change tools in a matter of moments, thanks to the Volvo hydraulic attachment bracket. The L60G, L70G and L90G all enjoy the modern stylistic overhaul of the rest of the G-Series range. This includes a new electrically operated sloping engine hood design that improves rear visibility and, when opened, provides wide access to the engine compartment, making servicing and repairs easier.

Higher torque with lower emissions These new machines meet the requirements of the Tier 4i emissions legislation that came into force on January 1, 2012. The L60G, L70G and L90G are all fitted with a Volvo 6 liter, 6 cylinder turbocharged V-ACT (Volvo Advanced Combustion Technology) off highway diesel engine, which features cooled gas

recirculation and a particulate filter with active regeneration. The diesel particulate filter (DPF) temporarily holds the particulate matter and then incinerates it, further reducing emissions. This process is conducted without any loss of performance or operation. Producing between 161 and 173 hp, depending on the model, these three units provide high torque at low engine speeds. Middle weight Volvo wheel loaders As well as meeting the low emissions requirements of the legislation, the D6 engine also leads the industry in terms of fuel efficiency, reliability and noise. The production of torque and power at low engine speeds, combined with load sensing hydraulics, promotes work at a lower rpm, which in turn extends engine life, lowers fuel usage, and dramatically reduces noise. Fuel use and noise are also reduced, thanks to a hydraulically driven, electronically controlled fan, which increases fan speeds only when needed. Built to perform together These new engines are matched to drivetrain, hydraulics and lifting systems that are all designed and produced by Volvo for improved productivity, lower emissions, greater smoothness, easy serviceability, and operator comfort. That’s not all — the L90G wheel loader also features a 23 percent increase in lifting force and

T ips for doing a better paving job Balancing production and placement of hot mix asphalt along with proper placement of breakdown compactors

Contractorscomplete all sorts of paving projects like this access road to a new development. by Dale Starry, director, Strategic Technologies so transportation of the material is necessary. A wide Volvo, CE. variety of types and sizes of transport vehicles are Successful paving projects do not happen by available, many specifically designed to haul HMA. accident. They are the result of careful planning and Live bottom and moving floor trailers feature the implementation. From restricting or rerouting traffic largest haul capacities; dump trailers and trucks flow to making sure the right equipment is on site to have less capacity. Regardless of the type and capacity of the haul vehiperform the job, a complex series of events comprises a paving project, especially in the critical asphalt cles, the delivery of HMA from the plant to the paving project requires consistency and regularity so that laydown phase. Production the mix being placed is of uniform temperature. To achieve the best results and most profitable oper- Specified density and smoothness of the finished ation on a paving project, contractors must balance pavement can only be achieved when the mix the elements of hot mix asphalt (HMA) production temperature is uniform. Placement: laydown and placement. A number of HMA plants are available. Top end stationary drum mix facilities Placement of HMA is a two part process. The first produce up to 700 tons per hour of HMA. On the portion of placement is laydown, accomplished using other end of the spectrum, portable drum / batch a paver. A paver has two major components — the plants produce 30 to more than 100 tons per hour of tractor and the screed. The tractor is the prime mover HMA. that is used for self-propulsion of the equipment. The Paving projects are rarely adjacent to an HMA plant, screed is the working tool, the equipment that spreads the HMA into pavement. The operator must judge three factors when determining paving speed. First, the operator must see how much HMA is being delivered to the paver. Second, the operator must look down at the width and thickness of the pavement panel being laid. Third, the operator must check behind the paver to see if the compactor train is able to keep up with the paver. Asphalt paver This balance between production and placement needs to be maintained throughout paving. If the delivery of mix to the paver is interrupted, the paver needs to stop. Current practice is to rapidly stop and start the paver so the screed level does not fluctuate because of paving speed or head of material in front of the screed. If the paver outruns the compactor train, the entire paving operation is at risk of failing to achieve target density and/or pavement smoothness. Placement: compaction The second part of the placement process is compaction. The compaction of HMA must be completed within a finite time period. This interval is referred to as time available for compaction (TAC). Repaving a secondary road calls for prep work in The TAC varies based on environmental consideraadvance of the paving.

tions, mix properties and mix temperature. An asphalt mix cools continually, although at varying rates, from the time it leaves the pugmill or mixing drum. The longer a mix is stored in a silo and the longer the delivery time to the paver, the greater the temperature loss. Temperature drops as the mix moves through the mobile conveyor, sometimes called a material transfer vehicle, and the paver. After being spread by the paver’s screed into the width and thickness required for the project, the mix continues to cool. By the time the breakdown compactor begins the compaction process, the mix may have cooled 10 to 15 percent from the point of production. The TAC varies from less than 10 minutes to greater than 20 minutes based only on the difference in temperature of the base. Obviously, it is more difficult to achieve specified density in 10 minutes than in 20, with all other factors remaining constant. Compaction speed must match paving speed for optimum project efficiency. If a vibratory compactor is utilized for breakdown, the rolling speed is controlled by the need to achieve pavement surface smoothness. A vibratory compactor drum impacts the surface of the pavement each time an unbalanced weight inside the drum spins one complete revolution. Vibratory compactor drums must make between 10

to 14 drum impacts for each foot of travel. Most compactor manufacturers provide charts to show the expected TAC on a pavement panel placed at a certain temperature over a base of a certain temperature and measured thickness. (See chart sample). Vibration frequency of the compactor is measured

These charts depict time available for compaction (TAG) for a pavement panel placed at a certain temperature. using a vibrating reed tachometer or similar tool. Dividing vibration frequency by the required drum impacts per length of travel determines the rolling speed of the compactor with vibration. For example, a vibratory compactor with 2,500 vibrations per minute frequency that delivers 12 drum impacts per foot spacing means the compactor can roll at a maximum speed of 208 feet per minute or 2.4 miles per hour. This vibratory compactor cannot increase rolling speed if it fails to keep pace with the paver. To do so would change impact spacing and risk failure to achieve smoothness. This is why vibratory compactor manufacturers like Volvo Construction Equipment provide high frequency vibrating compactors. These units have a vibration frequency of 4,000 vibrations per minute or greater. With the same drum impact spacing of 12 impacts per foot, a vibratory compactor with 4,000 vibrations per minute can increase rolling speed to 330 feet per minute or 3.8 miles per hour and still achieve pavement surface smoothness. The higher vibration frequency provides a 50 percent faster speed to keep up with quickly moving and more productive pavers. Balance What is the key to effective placement of HMA? Balance. Balance between placement and production and between mix delivery and production yield the best results. Careful control of the paving speed enables efficient laydown and compaction of the mix at consistent temperatures. The best paving projects find balance between each of these elements. Proper placement of breakdown compactors

Paving contractors do off road paving without concern for traffic control as they would on a highway paving project.

There is debate about how closely behind the paver the breakdown compactor should roll during hot mix asphalt (HMA) laydown. Some industry experts suggest the breakdown compactor needs to nearly bump the paver to take full advantage of the reduced mix viscosity with the HMA pavement at its hottest temperature. These experts believe that optimum achievement of target density cannot take place if the breakdown compactor is too far back in the rolling zone from the paver. In truth, every paving project is different. For Superpave mix designs, the asphalt cement is selected based on the performance grading (PG) system. Binders are modified to combine stiffness at higher ambient temperatures with flexibility at colder temperatures. These PG asphalt cements are identified with nomenclature that indicates their ability to perform under these temperature extremes. For example, a Superpave mix laid on an interstate or primary state highway in south central Pennsylvania will specify a PG 64-22 binder. A PG 6422 binder is specially formulated to resist rutting under traffic at pavement temperatures up to 147 degrees Fahrenheit yet remain flexible to resist cracking in temperatures as low as -8 degrees Fahrenheit. Unlike neat asphalt cement used in a Marshall mix, PG binders make it more difficult to reduce air void content, unless compacted when hot. The cooling rate of a pavement panel depends on its mass and ambient conditions. Thicker mats retain heat longer than thinner mats. Panels stay hot longer when laid on a base with a temperature of 90 degrees Fahrenheit compared to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Mats cool more rapidly when the ambient temperature is lower, and retain heat longer when ambient tempera-

ture is higher. A 1.5-inch thick mat, laid at 248 degrees Fahrenheit on a base of 60 degrees Fahrenheit cools to 185 degrees Fahrenheit in eight minutes. A 2-inch thick mat, laid at 275 degrees Fahrenheit on a base that is 60 degrees Fahrenheit cools to 185 degrees Fahrenheit in 16 minutes. How much TAC is lost if the breakdown compactor stays back rather than rolling closely to the paver screed? Scientific calculations, backed by thermal easurements of mat temperature, indicate the following: • A lift 2.5-inches thick, placed at 302 degrees Fahrenheit on a base that is 30 degrees Fahrenheit, will cool to 185 degrees Fahrenheit in 20 minutes; • Moving the breakdown compactor from 6-feet to 50feet behind the paver results in an average loss of one minute in TAC; • This one minute loss is equivalent to -5 degrees Fahrenheit in pavement temperature; • This scenario is dependent upon a five pass rolling pattern behind a paver moving at 0.5 miles per hour. For this application, the TAC loss is insignificant and will not result in failure to achieve air void reduction in the mix. It makes little difference where temperature and time differential is checked because TAC is consistent throughout the width and length of the breakdown rolling zone. For safety, it should also be noted that the breakdown compactor should stay two and a half lengths of the compactor behind the paver. So long as this buffer distance is maintained, there is minimized risk of injury to ground personnel. For more information on Volvo products visit www.volvoce.com.

Paving a parking lot like this one in Central Pennsylvania can be accomplished in two or three days with the proper prep work and paving equipment

Local paving contractor chooses wisely by Jon M. Casey Paving contractors have a wide variety of jobs that are available to them over the course of time. With everything from airport runways to parking lots and highway projects to bicycle paths needing paving, it is no wonder that there are numerous paving machines and screed choices available to the contractors to help them do their job. One local, central Pennsylvania contractor, who has been in the paving business for more than 37 years, has his own thoughts about how to select his equipment. “I buy local to help keep the business local,” he said as he took a few minutes with Hard Hat News for this paving issue.

The contractor, who requested to remain unnamed, said that he has always looked to local suppliers for his trucks and equipment because as a local, family owned business, he wants to remain loyal to the local businesses who have worked with him, to support the construction industry over the years. “I have 3 pavers, the Blaw-Knox PF-150, a Blaw-Knox 410 Tracked paver and a smaller, Neal paver that we use for walking paths, bike trials and that kind of work,” he said. “We have the 14 ton Bomag (BW138AD) and the 25 ton HYPAC C778B vibratory compactors, both bought locally from Groff Tractor and Equipment. Our Case skid steer loader came from

them as well. Most of our work is done here in the local area and over the years we have earned the reputation for doing a good job at a reasonable price,” he said. They have five employees, all extended family. Their work includes paving jobs, large and small. They do road paving for municipalities, businesses and private individuals as well. Whatever the job, they have the equipment to do first class work. “We even have two pavement reclaimers that we use to prepare sites like this one,” he added. “We just ground the existing pavement and put it back in place as base material. It makes our work a lot easier when we have the right equipment for the job.”

as well as higher breakout forces and faster lift and tilt functions. Transmissions feature the exceptional Volvo Automatic Power Shift (APS) concept, which ensures the loader always operates in the ideal gear by sensing engine and travel speed, kick down, engine braking and other factors. Offering operators a choice of four gear-shifting programs, APS results in more efficient work cycles with lower fuel consumption and wear. Power is delivered to the ground through heavy duty wet brake axles that offer high rimpull. In difficult terrain, operators can select the differential lock in order to transfer 100 percent of the available drive to the wheels, reducing tire slippage and offering maximum traction in soft or slippery conditions. Purpose built, durable axle housings absorb all loading from the machine, reducing working stresses on the axle shafts for longer life. Wrench, whose philosophy and dedication to the customer is in line with our commitment to the success of the customer.” On hand to receive the award for Company Wrench were Hutchinson, Gary Gleckler — president, Scott Carpenter — CFO, and Cam Gabbard — vice president. “It’s an

honor to have our team’s dedication to the Terex Fuchs line recognized with this number one distributor award,” says Hutchinson. “With our focus on the scrap and demolition industries, the Terex Fuchs line was a natural fit to our equipment offering. As a result, the relationship has al-

lowed us to offer more solutions for our customers and has resulted in a huge infusion of growth for our company.” Company Wrench’s unique road to becoming a heavy equipment distributor began 13 years ago, when Hutchinson started a truck, trailer and equipment shop in Fairfield County, Ohio. At the time, the company offered 24 hour, seven day a week wrecker and recovery service. It wasn’t until 2002 that Company Wrench turned its focus to the demolition market, representing a line of specialty hydraulic attachments. In 2005, Terex Construction Americas began its relationship with Company Wrench to provide local sales and service support for Terex Fuchs scrap and recycling cus-

dlers designed for the scrap, recycling and demolition markets. With its strong bent on serving

these markets, Company Wrench immediately became a top performing distributor for the material handler line. “We took the same philosophy of 24-7 repair services demanded by the customer in the heavy wrecker business and adapted it to the scrap business for the Terex Fuchs line,” comments Gleckler. “We also offer a buy-back program as part of our support package.” “The biggest cost is when a company’s equipment is down, and we make sure we have a service technician to the jobsite the same day we receive the call,” adds Gabbard. “If a customer is in a remote location, we’ll fly the service personnel to the jobsite on our own plane to ensure he is up and running as quickly as possible.” It is this dedication to the customer that has enabled Company Wrench to grow from 1 to 12 locations in six years. The No. 1 Terex Fuchs equipment distributor award was presented to Company Wrench officials by Terex Construction Americas representatives Dean Barley, Chris Koch and Kristy Jennings in a ceremony held on May 1, 2012 at the distributor’s headquarters location in Carroll, Ohio. Joining Terex Construction Americas and Company Wrench officials were a host of local and state dignitaries, including representatives from the offices of Governor John Kasich and Con-

Hey Fred

Fred Ode, CEO/Chairman, Foundation Software

Hey Fred I’m the owner of a growing concrete business and we’re doing everything in-house. I have to tell you, though, the paperwork is overwhelming! I love my job, but I’d love it a lot more if I weren’t buried under paper. What can I do? - Daryl

Hey Daryl Your business is growing and that’s a great thing! But you’re right, the paperwork that comes with it can be completely overwhelming. Because I don’t know your specific situation, I would have to pinpoint the exact tasks with which you are experiencing difficulties before I gave you any definite suggestions. But

over the years, I’ve recognized a couple of areas where paperwork generally becomes an issue for contractors — payroll and reporting — and I’ve listed some possible ways to alleviate this paperwork overload. When it comes to processing construction payroll — especially when you’re working in multiple states and localities, on multiple jobs with multiple pay rates — it can be a big task with lots of paperwork. One way to remedy this is to consider outsourcing your payroll. There are even payroll services focused solely on

construction. In addition to standard processing (paychecks/direct deposits, taxes and W2s), these services are built to handle all the complexities of processing construction payroll, saving you time and paper! The second area that tends to cause paperwork overload is construction reporting. Certified Payroll, Union, EEO Minority Compliance, Workers’ Compensation and job cost reports are just some of the reports that contractors need. The same construction specific payroll services that will simplify your payroll may

even have the ability to produce these reports automatically based on your payroll data. And if you’re still overwhelmed with paperwork, it may be time to consider other construction specific software packages: estimating, accounting, etc. For instance, a construction specific accounting software package with more robust job costing capability will reduce your reliance on spreadsheets and give you more control of your financials on a job by job basis. It can handle complex construction payroll, plus give you all

the reports you need to know exactly where you stand… without losing your desk under papers. Good luck! - Fred Call for Questions: Thank you for reading “Hey Fred!” CEO/chairman of Foundation Software, Fred Ode is here to answer any question you might have. Plus, he loves getting e-mails, so send a question to heyfred@ foundationsoft.com, and he’ll get you an answer. our question may even make the Hard Hat News website. Thanks!

From a small initial territory representing Terex Fuchs material handlers, Company Wrench now offers sales and service support for multiple states in the Midwestern and Southern regions for Terex Fuchs. “This is a well deserved honor for Company Wrench,” says Chris Koch, divisional sales manager for Terex Construction Americas. “They are a top notch organization and one of our most dedicated distributors, not only to the product line but, more importantly, to the customer. We congratulate them on their success.”

SALINA, KS — Bergkamp Inc., based in Salina, KS, offers the M212 truck mounted slurry seal and micro surfacing paver that increases production capabilities and minimizes potential greenhouse gas emissions. With multiple units sold throughout the world, the M212 is Bergkamp’s largest truck mounted paver, holding more aggregate, asphalt emulsion and water to increase the square yards that can be paved per load. Ideal for jobs where distances from the stockpile are farther, the M212 delivers one of the most efficient methods of preventive maintenance for highways, roads and parking lots — which can

extend the life of pavement by up to seven or more years. The truck mounted M212 can carry 12square-yards of aggregate in a level struck load, 691 gallons of asphalt emulsion and 691 gallons of water and features a 65 gallon stainless steel additive tank. The pugmill, conveyor and all liquid material tanks are removable for easy cleaning. All tanks are bolted in rather than welded, adding extra durability and improving ease of maintenance. The asphalt emulsion and water tanks are separate components, eliminating possible rust through and contamination of products. The M212 has a full width working platform that al-

Bergkamp’s M212 paver carries more lows operators to easily see both sides of the unit, the spreader box and the material being placed. In addition, a remote sideshift control lets the spreader box operator control the box from the ground. Pavement preservation methods such as the slurry seal and micro surfacing treatments applied by the M212 use fewer natural resources (e.g., aggregate, binder, etc.), consume less energy and reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions when compared to traditional pavement reactive maintenance and repair methods. Aggregate is delivered to the M212’s pugmill by a belt over chain conveyor

the M212 delivers one of the most efficient methods of preventive maintenance for highways, roads and parking lots — which can extend the life of pavement by up to seven or more years. to eliminate slippage. Steep hopper walls minimize bridging, while the hopper’s polyethylene lining reduces friction. This eliminates the need for a vibrator, which decreases problems with loose bolts and damage to welds and

components. The asphalt emulsion ratio is regulated as it is pumped by the large 3-inch gear pump into the pugmill — where they are mixed with the aggregate. The variable speed, dual shaft, multipaddle pugmill has a dual

hydraulic drive, which provides even mixture and coating of the aggregate. The M212 has a proven design with convenient control locations and good operator visibility. The unit is powered by an onboard 99 hp Cummins diesel engine located at the front of the unit in an enclosed engine compartment that reduces noise for the driver and crew. The unit provides flexibility to better manage legal load weight restrictions by adding additional axles, including one behind the drive axle, which increases the wheelbase and helps meet the Federal bridge law. The M212 is part of Bergkamp’s M2 Series of slurry seal and micro surfacing pavers, which also includes the truck mounted M206, M208 and M210 and the trailer mounted M216 paver. Bergkamp Inc. has been manufacturing pavement maintenance equipment since 1980. It offers a full line of truck mounted, trailer mounted and continuous slurry seal and micro surfacing pavers and equipment, as well as pothole patching equipment. Bergkamp’s headquarters and manufacturing facility is located in Salina, KS, with additional sales offices in Waco, Texas and Arlington, VA. The company works with customers throughout North America and the world. For more information, contact Bergkamp, 3040 Emulsion Dr., Salina, KS 67401. Outdoor Worker Safety: Top ten things you need to know about Ticks 10. Ticks crawl up ticks don't jump, fly or drop from trees onto your head and back. If you find one attached there, it most likely latched onto your foot or leg and crawled up over your entire body. 9. All ticks (including deer ticks) come in small, medium and large sizes 8. Ticks can be active even in the winter That's right! Deer Ticks in particular are not killed by freezing temperatures, and will be active any winter day that the ground is not snow covered or frozen. 7. Ticks carry disease causing microbes tick transmitted infections are more common these days than in past decades. With explosive increases in deer populations, extending even into semi-urban areas in the eastern and western U.S., the trend is for increasing abundance and geographic spread of deer ticks and Lone Star ticks, and scientists are finding an ever increasing list of disease causing microbes transmitted by these ticks: Lyme disease

bacteria, Babesia protozoa, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia and other rickettsia, even encephalitis causing viruses and possibly Bartonella bacteria. Back in the day, tick bites were more of an annoyance but now a bite is much more likely to make you sick. 6. Only deer ticks transmit Lyme disease bacteria The only way to get Lyme disease is by being bitten by a deer tick or one of its “cousins” found around the world. 5. For most tick borne diseases, you have at least 24 hours to find and remove a feeding tick before it transmits an infection. Even a quick daily tick check at bath or shower time can be helpful in finding and removing attached ticks before they can transmit an infection. Lyme disease bacteria take at least 24 hours to invade the tick’s saliva. 4. Deer tick nymphs look like a poppy seed on your skin And with about 1 out of 4 nymphal deer ticks carrying the Lyme disease spirochete and other nasty germs in the northeastern, mid-

Atlantic and upper mid-western U.S., it’s important to know what you’re really looking for. They’re easy to miss, their bites are generally painless, and they have a habit of climbing up (under clothing) and biting in hard to see places. 3. The easiest and safest way to remove a tick is with a pointy tweezer Using really pointy tweezers, it’s possible to grab even the poppy seed sized nymphs right down next to the skin. The next step is to simply pull the tick out like a splinter. 2. Work Wear with built-in tick repellent is best for preventing tick bites An easy way to avoid tick bites and disease is to wear clothing (shoes, socks, shorts, pants and shirt) with Insect Shield® tick repellent built-in. 1.
