There on the Double: Lending a hand in Superstorm Sandy by Kristen M. Castrataro
From Tulsa, OK, this BBC Electric Crew lent a hand to those without power in Rhode Island: Lineman Josh Stevens, Lineman Teddy Iamb, Foreman Jeremy Nichols and Apprentice Eric Fenimore (L-R). When Hurricane Irene passed through our area last The transformer for our property landed across our year, our family’s biggest loss was a couple of large driveway, still humming. The road and three drivebranches from a pine tree in our horse pasture. With ways, including ours, were impassable. We settled in that as our frame of reference, we expected much the for a night without power. same from Superstorm Sandy. We were mistaken. At 7 the following morning, a Davey’s Tree Service The damage that followed far exceeded our expecta- crew appeared armed with chainsaws. They lopped, tions. By early afternoon, the For most of Monday’s storm, it was much ado fallen trees had been converted into huge piles of about nothing in our neighborhood. Then around 4 brush, logs, leaving a 20-foot, partially uprooted p.m., my husband and I heard a pop and a groan. The stump resembling the Leaning Tower of Pisa. groan came from the newly installed utility mast on We anticipated that power would be restored first our house, the device that supports our power and thing the following morning. returned to his own house, which was also without power. Of my neighbor’s storm damaged trees, a third one remained tenuously braced against yet another Norway spruce. It was threatening to fall with the next hard wind. A few hours after nightfall the Davey’s crew returned, to evaluate the tree. They decided to cut it down. An arborist in a bucket truck quickly trimmed the branches with a pole saw and topped the tree leaving another tall stump. At daylight on Wednesday, a new crew arrived. Unlike Davey Tree’s local crew, this BBC Electric team was from a Missouri based company out of Tulsa, OK. When asked when we could expect our utilities back, in a rich drawl the supervisor replied, “I’m three days from home. I want to finish this as soon as I can.” As I watched his crew work, I believed him. The four men with their two boom trucks moved together almost seamlessly. One truck outfitted with an auger dug the hole for the new pole. Then, the operator lifted the pole off the trailer and lowered it into place. While the supervisor stayed on the boom to balance the pole, the rest of the crew rushed in with shovels, filled the hole and tamped the soil in place. Periodically a lineman checked the pole’s positioning with a plum line. By noontime, we had two new utility poles re-strung with electric wires. Meanwhile, the two severed poles dangled between the cable and telephone lines. An environmental cleanup crew had bagged the old transformer and remediated the leakage. We still didn’t have power, but we could leave our driveway. That is, our Honda Civics could leave. The GMC pickup was too tall to squeeze under the TV cable lines. On Thursday morning, BBC Electric returned to put up the new transformer. They packed up the old one and left. Clearly, we would face another day without power. Early in the afternoon, our hopes revived briefly when another crew arrived, but they were not in the power business. Krawiec Tree Service from Glocester,
Krawiec Tree Service from Glocester, RI removes the last three Norway Spruces that deprived a community of power for seven days following Superstorm Sandy.
From Tulsa, OK, this BBC Electric Crew lent a hand to those without power in Rhode Island. RI had arrived. They are in the chipping business. these workers’ contributions to people in distant With a log truck, a chipper and a trailer, the crew parts of the nation go unrecognized. For seven days quickly cleaned up the surrounding debris. By the here, in Carolina, RI, that was not the case. For the time they were finished, the only sign of storm seven days following Superstorm Sandy, to those of damage was a gaping hole in the landscape where the us affected by the storm, these workers were heroes. spruces had stood. Our street was immaculate. Friday morning, BBC Electric assured us that this would be the day we would have power. I had been watching and photographing the team all week, so they were starting to feel like family. The feeling grew when the supervisor looked at me holding my nine month-old son and said, “They were going to send us to another site today, but I said, ‘No. I gotta get power to that little baby.’” We chatted while they attached the power lines to the house. It turns out that rescuing people is what they do. They spend most of their time following natural disasters and restoring electricity to people like us. To reach our house the day after Superstorm Sandy, they left Tulsa two days before the storm even hit. After they got Rhode Island straightened out, they expected to head to Long Island, bunking in tents or sleeping in their trucks. I wondered what inspired people to take a job like that. Jeremy Nichols, the supervisor, has a wife and five kids at home. He told us that the traveling is difficult on family life, but he was born to do this job. His father was a lineman, and Jeremy was following in his footsteps. While working on our lines, they closed our street. They said they could work faster and safer without worrying about traffic. Pointing to their fluorescent vests, Nichols said, “These things are just a target.” When the work was done and life had returned to normal, we determined that our family’s experience with Sandy was not catastrophic: we suffered no loss of property and thankfully, no personal harm. Just the same, our time without power was significant. As we watched the electricians, linemen, arborists and cable repairmen working those several days, we realized that while they were restoring our power, many of those workers also went home to darkened Restringing electric wires is a team effort, with ground homes . . . or to hotel rooms 3-1/2 days away from crews ready to support the bucket linemen at a where they live. We became aware that too often, moment's notice.

Western MA firefighter wins BOSS Power-V CT plow in Heavy Metal Sweepstakes IRON MOUNTAIN, MI — Full time firefighter and part time snow removal contractor, Connor Hedge, 24, of Westfield, MA, is the proud owner of a new Power-V XT Snowplow, one of two grand prizes in the Heavy Metal Sweepstakes sponsored by THE BOSS Snowplow and Gravely® in September. The snowplow was recently installed by THE BOSS distributor Ken’s Auto Sales, 921 Main St., Holyoke, MA. “I’ve been wanting a BOSS V-plow for a long time, so when I learned that I won it was a tremendous thrill and surprise for me,” said Hedge, who is a paramedic and firefighter with the Westfield Fire Department. Hedge operates a part- time snow removal contracting business and
he said his new BOSS Power-V XT will enhance his productivity to help him get the job done
faster when servicing his local accounts. “I’ve always been impressed with THE BOSS’ reputa-
tion for quality and durability, so this plow is a welcome addition.” Hedge recently picked
up his BOSS plow from Ken’s Auto Sales and owner Kenneth Cashman, who operates the decades old dealership with his two sons, Mike and Tim. Ken’s Auto Sales carries the full lineup of BOSS Snowplow products and specializes in quality installations with onsite, BOSS factory trained technicians. Hedge was one of more than 8,000 participants in the raffle style Heavy Metal Sweepstakes, which invited current and
new BOSS and Gravely Facebook fans to play online and receive daily tokens to bid on popular gear and valuable prizes, including a Gravely ProTurn mower, the second Grand Prize in the sweepstakes. Players who “Liked” the page received a new token each day and earned bonus entries for inviting a Facebook friend to play. Prizewinners in the sweepstakes were determined through a ran-

Acme Auto Radiator. Owners Tom and Dan Mancino. 411 19th St., Watervliet Ny 12189 Call 518-273-6061 or visit www.acmeradiator.webs.com. Anthony Mancino opened the doors to Acme Auto Radiator in May 1952, at a location on Broadway in Watervliet, NY. In 1970, they moved to their present location where they have remained and grown steadily since. In the early days, Acme specialized in radiator repair and re-coring. Back then, when a vehicle needed service on the cooling system, an auto repair garage would remove the radiator and bring it to Acme for repair. Over time, many of the local small repair facilities went out of business or became mini-marts as we know them today, but not Acme. Acme Auto Radiator grew into a full service, cooling systems repair operation with added capabilities for air conditioning repair as well. This growth required that they expand the operation to the size it is today. As leasing new cars and family sized trucks became more popular and the retail radiator business evolved into a “replace not repair” kind of business, it was during these years that they shifted their attention to repairing the cooling systems of heavy equipment and commercial vehicles. They had always done this kind of work but now it comprises nearly 90 percent of their total business. Anthony’s two sons Dan and Tom Mancino currently own the business. Dan started with the company in 1976 and Tom joined the team in 1987 a year after their father retired. Acme still tries to repair most of the radiators that come to them for service, because the replacement cost of parts for commercial vehicles has soared in recent years. As part of their customer service, Acme is always looking to save their customers money whenever it is practical. For more information, contact Acme Auto Radiator for all your radiator and cooling system problems.
helps protect workers and utilities
Historically, the lack of reliable and accurate information on subsurface utilities locations and other buried obstacles to construction, has resulted in costly damages, delays, redesigns and worst of all, injuries and deaths. In today’s competitive environment with tighter budgets and expedited timelines, these become challenges that are unacceptable. As we work to develop and execute competitive project bids while maintaining a safe work site, these challenges become increasingly important. Underground Imaging Technologies (UIT), a Caterpillar affiliate, can provide a significant part of the solution to these problems. UIT is an advanced subsurface mapping company that supplies detailed information about the subsurface en-
vironment. This enables project owners, design engineers and contractors to design and carry out construction projects with an accurate assessment of subsurface obstacles. On most projects, the utilities are often not in place as they are shown on the records. Sometimes, they are not shown at all. Finding all of the utilities is often accomplished in ways that be less than accurate. These methods can include One call locators, geophysical mapping, potholing or the least safest way of finding underground items, the contractor’s use of an excavator. UIT addresses these dangers, the damage, the delays and the resulting costs of unearthing unknown buried utilities and items with new technology. UIT provides the most complete and accurate mapping of known and unknown subsurface utilities
UIT is an advanced subsurface mapping company that supplies detailed information about the subsurface environment. and other features. UIT is uniquely able do this with the use of a multi-sensor geophysical toolbox combined with technicians who have the experience to rapidly and to non-intrusively collect data. Then, the results are jointly interpreted and mapped. By reducing potholes, damages and schedule delays and by determining conflicts before construction begins, companies realize design and construction project cost
savings. Having enhanced knowledge of subsurface features is valuable not only for the current project, but also for asset management and design of future construction and maintenance operations. As an added benefit, results are available in several CADD and GIS formats. This can provide a basis for developing and maintaining an accurate asset management database.

Snow removal volunteers sought for SnowCare for Troops third season Project EverGreen thanks volunteers who back up troops through the year IRON MOUNTAIN, MI — As Project EverGreen’s SnowCare for Troops (SCFT) program enters its third season, the non-profit organization is recognizing the more than 600 volunteers who support the campaign’s military families year round by also offering landscaping services through GreenCare for Troops (GCFT). Both programs are managed by Project EverGreen and connect military families who have a spouse or family member currently deployed in the armed forces with snowplow and landscape professionals. SnowCare for Troops is a national program underwritten by THE BOSS Snowplow. “It takes a very special person to give of their time and resources to back up our troops and their families and we want to thank our many landscape contractors and snow removal professionals who go the extra mile to make sure they’re taken care of throughout the year,” said Cindy Code, Project EverGreen executive director. Before the first snowflakes fall this winter, Project EverGreen is urging its 4,000 volunteers supporting GCFT to also consider registering for the organi-
zation’s SnowCare for Troops program. New recruits are also welcome and can visit http://projectevergreen.com/scft/ to sign up. SnowCare for Troops will build upon two successful seasons when snow arrives this winter. In its first two years, the program has 1,200 volunteers signed up to help more than 1,500 military families needing snow removal assistance. With nearly 1.5 million active duty military troops serving in the U.S. armed forces the need for volunteers is great. Entering its third season, SnowCare for Troops connects military families who have a spouse or family member currently deployed in the armed forces with snow removal and landscape professionals to provide free snow removal services. “We’re proud to support the SnowCare for Troops program and to lend a hand to help our nation’s military families who already carry so much on their shoulders,” said Mark Klossner, marketing director for THE BOSS Snowplow. “This program is our way of showing our military how much we appreciate their sacrifice and we want to thank

Hey Fred Fred Ode, CEO/Chairman, Foundation Software
Hey Fred We’re looking for new accounting software, and I’ve been put in charge of the research. I think I found a system that will work for us… but I feel uneasy about their sales process. The sales rep makes everything seem so easy, but my gut tells me it’s not. Should I be wary? - Karla Hey Karla YES! Absolutely be wary. If you’re not getting a good feeling from the vendor, it’s a red flag. Here’s the thing about purchasing software — you’re not just
buy an accounting package. You’re also buying into a relationship with the company that supports it. I commend you for doing your research on the actual product, so here are a few things to research about the companies you’re considering buying from: Support. When you’re implementing a new software package, you want to be sure that there’s someone who knows the software there to guide you along the way. Is support from a VAR, or direct? Does the way that they want to train your company line up to what you need? Do they offer online, classroom or on premise training? Does a live person answer when you call? Training, implementation plans and ongoing support are all necessary considerations when it comes to choosing a software vendor. You have to be able to rely on them both now and in the future. Updates. When it comes to construc-
tion — especially the accounting aspect — there can be a lot of changes with taxes, rules, regulations, reporting requirements and more. That’s why it’s so important to make sure that the vendor you’re considering offers regular updates to keep the software current, and to make sure you don’t get stuck with manual calculations… or costly penalties. Be sure to ask about how many times they run updates each year. Company. I’ve always felt that the most important part of buying a software product is buying into the relationship with the company. Has the company had consistent ownership over the past 5-10 years? Do they have a vision, and does it line up with your own company’s needs? Do they have outside investors, or do they grow organically from the inside, reinvesting their money back into their own products? If you’re getting a bad feeling about the compa-
ny, either through the salesperson, the receptionists, or the company’s practices, there’s probably a good reason. The biggest question of all, though, is this: Are they committed to their products and customers? This commitment will allow the vendor to focus all their energy on providing a top of the line product, quality support and regular updates to keep you moving forward and growing your business. I hope this helps! - Fred Call for Questions: Thank you for reading “Hey Fred!” CEO/chairman of Foundation Software, Fred Ode is here to answer any question you might have. Plus, he loves getting e-mails, so send a question to heyfred@foundationsoft. com, and he’ll get you an answer. Your question may even make the Hard Hat News website. Thanks!

Gilbane’s Pamela House receives highest honor from National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Pamela House, a 30 year veteran of Gilbane Building Co., was awarded the Crystal Achievement Award from NAWIC at the organization’s national conference last week for her commitment to advancing women in the construction field PROVIDENCE, RI — Gilbane is proud to announce Pamela House, a senior accountant with Gilbane Building Co., has received the Crystal Achievement Award from the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). Pam is an active member of NAWIC who strives to enhance the success of women in construction and to promote Gilbane’s role in engaging and attracting women to the field. “Pam has been a steadfast leader in our company’s commitment to encour-
aging women to join the construction field,” said Bill Gilbane, Jr., president and COO. “Our workforce, like our communities, is changing rapidly and it’s exciting to see Gilbane employees at the forefront of this change. Pam’s Crystal Achievement honor is well deserved.” Pam’s commitment to the National Association of Women in Construction spans close to 20 years and includes leadership roles of Membership Chairperson, National Convention Delegate, Board of Directors and Gilbane’s liaison to NAWIC’s national office, among others. She is a strong advocate for minority and women representation on construction projects and has organized many events during her career to maximize opportunities for MBE/WBE participation.
“We really have come so far in our evolution from when I started in construction,” remarked Pam. “Although construction is still a predominately male profession, we are making great strides in encouraging young people, particularly women, to get involved. NAWIC has been a leader in that regard.” Pam is a 30 year veteran of Gilbane and has served on the company’s Diversity Council for most of that time. In addition to her professional role within Gilbane, Pam has been active in the YWCA of Greater Rhode Island; League of Women Voters of Pawtucket; Rhode Island Special Olympics and Rebuilding Together. NAWIC Past National President Susan Levy established the Crystal Vision Awards Program in 1995. The program recognizes individuals who promote the
role of women in the construction industry through initiatives, policies or legislation. NAWIC is an international association serving approximately 160 chapters across the United States. The association has expanded to include international affiliates in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Find out more at www.nawic.org. HERNDON, VA — The Association for Facilities Engineering (AFE), a non-profit national and international organization that advances causes and supports the professional development relating to building maintenance, operations and engineering, announces the appointment of Wayne P. Saya, Sr. CPE (Certified Plant Engineer) as its new executive director. Saya replaces former Executive Director Dr. Wayne Carley, who resigned from AFE on October 29, 2012 citing personal obligations. Saya, of Nashua, NH, most recently served as AFE’s president and chairman of the national board of directors. He assumed the role of interim executive director following Carley’s sudden departure. Shortly thereafter, the board recommended and unanimously appointed Saya as the new executive director demonstrating its confidence in him to be the best candidate for continuing the organization’s current
and emerging operational oversight of its members, educational programs and corporate office. Upon acceptance of this new role with the association, Mr. Saya stepped down as president and now answers to the board he recently chaired. AFE spokesperson Talisa ThomasHall reveals “Mr. Saya will use his reputation of trust amongst his peers and professional accomplishments to guide AFE through the progressive agenda established by the board of directors while under his chairmanship.” Within the past thirty years, Saya’s vast accomplishments within the facilities engineering community include serving as a director within prominent companies such as the Ritz Carlton Hotel Company, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, Whittier Partners of CB Richard Ellis Boston, Tufts University and most recently with UGL Services, North America, now DTZ.
As a Certified Plant Engineer, Mr. Saya is an instructor for AFE’s Plant engineer (CPE) and Plant Maintenance manager (CPMM) certification programs. Mr. Saya is recognized as a pioneer in early micro circuit technology, holding the United States Patent for one of the country’s first wireless alarm systems, incorporating frequency-hopping (jam proofing) technology; and has authored “The Art of Understanding Your Building’s Personality.” Wayne Saya, Sr. is currently a member of the High Performance Building Congressional Caucus Coalition (HPBCCC), a private sector coalition overseen by the Government Services Administration (GSA) providing guidance and support to the High Performance Building Caucus of the U.S. Congress. He serves on numerous other committees, including the AFE Corporate Relations Council (which he founded and chairs), that help to identify and respond to the evolving needs and trends within the facilities engineering profession. Association for Facilities Engineering (AFE) AFEwas founded in 1954 as the American Institute of Plant Engineers (AIPE), the national organization to unify the assortment of plant and building engineering clubs already organized. Since then, AFE has grown to international prominence, and has trained and certified thousands of facilities engineering, operations and maintenance professionals including members within such organizations as the Building

Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), and the International Facilities Maintenance Organization (IFMA). AFE boasts of having a member within each United States Embassy world wide through its membership program with the United States Department of State; is currently training retiring members of the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg through its Fort Bragg Initiative and provides an in-house training program for EMCOR Government Services’ national office, in Arlington, Virginia. As a result of recent U.S. embassy events abroad, AFE’s professional development group has been conferencing on the latest business continuity programs for potentially distressed facilities. AFE plans on having a revised business continuity plan (BCP-DB) for distribution to their members abroad by the first quarter of 2013. Within the government facilities maintenance and engineering community, AFE is known as the company behind the curtain. Within non-government, AFE has recently certified over two hundred plant maintenance managers (CPMM) for CB Richard Ellis’ Bank of America account, and maintains overseas partnerships that have resulted in the certifying over two hundred and fifty plant engineers (CPE) for the Korean Institute of Plant Engineering and Construction (KIPEC) in Seoul, Korea. AFE has a number of members and training programs nationally, and in Canada, Europe, Dubai, India and Malaysia.
