We agreed that he could learn the important points of contract crushing while he was overseeing the H.R. and taking care of the day to day operations. He also would serve as project manager in my absence while I was out bidding on new jobs. Brian has done a fantastic job for us since we hired him in mid-2011.” Crushing at Lee’s Pit Brian agreed. “I’ve enjoyed coming aboard and overseeing jobs like this one,” he said as we met at a crushing job at one of the area’s leading construction and paving company’s former sand and gravel operations. It is now a materials storage site near Williamsburg, VA. “Joe is up in suburban Washington, DC at a pre-construction meeting for a new project today so I’m here at the Lee’s Pit working with the crushing crew as they go about the recycling of some of this asphalt material. We plan to work at this for about a week, while the customer uses the RAP in Before they acquired the McCloskey S130 tracked screening system, Logan Aggregate Recycling depended upon some of the paving material that they are making for this S80 unit. With the ability to crush more product with their new I 44 impactor, it wasn't long before the S130 Logan 4 arrived on the scene.

one of their current projects. Once we have filled that need, we will move over to this stockpile of concrete,” he said, motioning to a neatly stacked accumulation of concrete debris behind him. “We will have about a month’s crushing to do, once we begin that part of the job.” Brian noted that the crews currently are working in two shifts, with two equipment operators for each shift. “We work from six in the morning until nine at night,” he said. “We overlap the shifts by an hour so that the two crews can work together to do maintenance and repair of the equipment as needed, and to communicate between crews so that the job will go more smoothly. They work very well together. With the McCloskey equipment that we have on site right now, the only things we have to do is refuel the equipment and do the scheduled maintenance or change screens as needed and keep going.”
Joe said that the choice of the McCloskey I-44 tracked impactor and the S-130 tracked screen system, has given his company the kind of portability and crushing capacity that he needs to do the small to medium sized jobs at which his company excels. “We have little in the way of lost time when we relocate the equipment. This is the most powerful crusher and screen system that we can use without special transportation permits,” he said. “We can call one of our custom haulers, have the equipment loaded, moved to another job site and set up and ready to crush by the follow day’s afternoon. More importantly, we do not have to wait for permits to move the equipment. Since we specialize in smaller crushing projects, this equipment gives us the advantage that we need to do this kind of work.” “We do the smaller jobs for a flat rate, but the larger projects, those over about 5,000 tons, are contract-

ed on a tonnage rate.” Brian said that he finds the mobility of the tracked equipment extremely helpful because they can make short moves like the one planned for this job site in a few minutes, without the need for trucks to haul the equipment from one place to another. “I also like the personal satisfaction of being able to satisfy a customer by being able to get in, do their crushing and then get out quickly so that they can do their work,” he said. “That is especially helpful at the site prep jobs where we go in and crush the concrete, sometimes in a confined space. We crush what they have removed from the existing structure, roadway or runway, and then they reuse it as fill material for the site prep of the new project. On a good day, we can crush and screen up to 200 tons per hour.” For more information about Logan Aggregate Recycling, Inc., visit their website at www.loganaggregaterecycling.com or by calling them at 804-363-8870.
Brian Beckstoffer, Logan Aggregates Recycling, Inc., business manager, oversees the on site, custom grinding activities of Logan Aggregate Recycling. Much of this project's time will be spent crushing the concrete material that can be seen stored behind Beckstoffer.
Local service gives McCloskey customers a performance advantage by Jon M. Casey Joe Logan, president of Logan Aggregate Recycling, Inc. emphasizes that the kind of work that his company does is built on relationships, both with customers and suppliers alike. So when it was time to upgrade his crushing and screening equipment, he called upon McCloskey Equipment’s Richmond, VA dealership, Common-wealth Equipment Screening and Crushing Systems. He knew that their representative, David Bleeks, would help him select the right equipment for the work that Logan was looking to do. “With our business designed to serve customers in Virginia, Maryland and parts of North Carolina, we found that the McCloskey line of equipment was ideal for our needs,” recalled Joe. “After we had started our business in 2010, the local McCloskey/Commonwealth Equipment representative, David Bleeks, called upon us regularly to make sure that we were able to meet our customer’s needs in ways that were profitable and efficient,” he said. “We had purchased a smaller McCloskey S80 screener to go with the other brand
of crusher and screen system that we started out with. After working with that equipment for the better part of a year, we found that the equipment was not able to keep up with our production needs. So when it was time to get larger, more powerful equipment, we went with McCloskey and Commonwealth Equipment.” “It was an easy decision to make,” he said. “The equipment is very portable, yet powerful. More importantly, Commonwealth Equipment has two full time service reps stationed in Richmond, so they are available if and when we might need them. Since Dave is also located in Richmond, it provides a perfect support team for us.” Joe said that the choice of the McCloskey I-44 tracked crusher and S130 screen system, gives Logan Aggregate Recycling, Inc. the crushing and screening capacity that they need to do customer’s jobs quickly and efficiently. “We were able to crush far more than we projected in 2011. We do a lot of work for a major construction and paving company in our region, and we do other smaller jobs that contractors
once did on their own by renting equipment or hiring in custom crushing contractors from outside our area. Those contract crushers were expensive and often required higher fees just to come in and set up to do the work. With our extremely portable, mobile equipment, we can get in, set up and perform the work efficiently. That makes our customers very happy.” “Having the ability to crush, screen and stockpile material the way we do, is reassuring to our customers,” said Joe. “With the 80 foot track mounted, conveyor with belt scales, we can accurately determine how much finished material we have crushed and screened while at the same time, we can effectively stockpile crushed material for our customer’s use. Customers prefer our method of stockpiling with the conveyor versus using a rubber tired loader because loaders can compact the material or contaminate it with carry-back in the bucket. This compromises product quality. We have been very pleased with the tracked equipment set up we have from McCloskey. It gives us the advantages of reliability, portability and
product quality, all of which are crucial for our success.” Dave Bleeks commented that he enjoys working with Logan Aggregate Recycling because they have refined the way they approach a concrete or recycling job and they make very efficient use of their crushing and screening equipment. “The I-44 Tracked Impactor is a very powerful crusher and is able to do a lot of work in a day,” he said. “Logan’s crews are able to use this equipment to its fullest potential and their customers are very happy with how efficient they are. It gives us a lot of satisfaction to see our systems being used in this way.” For more information on McCloskey equipment, visit their website at www.mccloskeyinternational.com. During my career in mining, I have met hundreds of people in a management role. Some were executives, some were managers of divisions, mines or plants, some were superintendents of operations, maintenance, tailings, procurement, electrical, etc., and some were supervisors responsible for crews that “did the work.” Without exception, the people in management that I admired and respected were honest, even when it was politically incorrect. Years later, I still have the highest regard for those individuals because I recognize how much courage it took to stand for what was right and “go to bat” for their people when it mattered most. This article is not about the importance of being honest in the workplace. It is about the word “brutal” and its hidden impact on the bottom line, the culture and management’s credibility. Webster’s definition of brutal reads: “extremely ruthless or cruel, crude or unfeeling in manner or speech, harsh and unrelenting, disagreeably precise or penetrating.” Many of you know people like this: • Their words often reflect anger, resentment, intimidation, arrogance and/or impatience; • They hold others accountable for a level of perfection that far exceeds what is required to do a job; • They believe that a brutal management style is THE ONLY WAY to motivate people to meet goals; • They were similarly supervised by past bosses who were rewarded for their conduct; and • They believe that their job title gives them the right to use this management style. Historically, companies have accept-
ed a variety of management styles within their management teams. If someone questioned the use of a brutal style, the response was often “that’s just the way he or she is — get used to it”. Even H.R. departments said “we have talked to that person and they refuse to change — there’s nothing else we can do.” This is especially true if that person was a friend of someone in management. There is rarely a connection made between a brutal management style and the bottom line… or the culture… or management’s credibility. Let’s examine each area where losses occur in more detail: • Bottom Line: Solving problems that interfere with production or cost depends on the freedom to communicate without judgment or retribution. These problems are often worth thousands and sometimes millions of dollars. All of the value attached to these problems hinges on the free exchange of ideas between management and the workforce and between departments. A brutal management style shuts down the free exchange of ideas, stealing profits tied to these problems. • Culture: People under a brutal management style come to work every day knowing that they may be ridiculed or criticized unfairly. They are depressed when they arrive on site and can’t wait to leave at the end of the day. They feel abandoned because they believe that the entire management team approves of the way they are treated. People with low morale rarely try to make things better and rarely share an insight about an opportunity to improve production or cost. People in the midst of adopting new work
practices are especially affected because they make more mistakes than usual during the transition from old to new practices. Nothing slows change down like overly critical comments during the change process — another connection to the bottom line. • Management Credability: When management continues to tolerate and/or reward a brutal management style, the entire team is affected. The rest of the team sees the lack of courage to address the issue. The workforce sees the lack of courage and willingness to forfeit additional profits and labels the entire team as weak. A virtual wall forms between the management team and the workforce as mistrust builds, a wall that is impossible to tear down without consistent changes in management behaviors. Successful change CANNOT be achieved if the foundation for change is filled with mistrust, conflict and confusion. Thought for the month: Brutal management styles cost more than you think. Setting standards that prevent a brutal style sets the stage for higher profits, happier people and more management credibility. If your company is experiencing the
problem described above, if your management team seems disjointed, if you have trouble reaching consensus, if managers say they want culture change but behave as if they don’t, you would benefit from calling Kay Sever. tions such as its famous eccentric FClass™ vibrating screens, which generate consistent, load independent G-Force without introducing dynamic loads into the customer’s structure. Haver & Tyler is also a premium provider of a complete lineup of screen media technology, ranging from fine wire to aggregate screen sections to specialized mining screen surfaces. Much customer and market acclaim has been received for the company’s Ty-Wire™ hybrid screens combing the high open area of woven wire cloth with the wear resistance of polyurethane. Haver & Tyler is focused on providing complete solutions rather than products. The newly introduced Pro-Deck™ system pays tribute to this. Pro-Deck is a comprehensive screen media consultation program, which will significantly reduce customers’ costs when it comes to screen operation and maintenance. Pro-Deck optimizes the performance of the vibrating screen by applying the right screen media to each phase of screening on the deck. The newest addition to Haver & Tyler is Major Wire Screening, located in Candiac, Quebec. Major Wire is considered to be the market leader
for self-cleaning screens. Haver & Tyler acquired 40 percent of the company and will fully integrate Major Wire by 2016. Until 2016 the companies will be operated independently. “We are excited about this new addition to the group. Jean Leblond (president of Major Wire) and his team have really done an outstanding job. We are very happy that we were able to make it all come together,” said Festge. Haver & Tyler encompasses the following brands: Haver & Tyler - Vibrating Screens, Washing Equipment and Pelletizing Technology. W.S. Tyler - Screen Media Technology including Pro-DeckTM screen media consultation program, TyWire™ Hybrid Screens, Tyler Wire Cloth, Ty-Max™ and Ty-Blitz™ Polyurethane, Fine Screening Sections; and Service and Parts Support including Screen Performance Analysis, Vibrating Screen Rebuilds and Engineered Screening Studies. LANHAM, MD — The Asphalt Pavement Alliance has announced the winners of its 2011 Perpetual Pavement Awards program. These national awards are given to road-owning agencies for asphalt pavements that are at least 35 years old and have never had a structural failure. The average interval between resurfacing of each winning pavement must be no less than 13 years, and the road must demonstrate excellence in design, quality in construction and value for the traveling public. Engineers at the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) evaluated the nominations for the Perpetual Pavement Award and a panel of industry experts validated the winners.
They are: • The Alabama Department of Transportation for an 8.5 mile section of State Route 17 in Washington County; • The Florida State Department of Transportation for a 13.2 mile section of State Route 997 in MiamiDade County; • The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for a 6.6 mile section of Hal Rogers Parkway in Leslie County; • The Minnesota Department of Transportation for a 16.7 mile section of U.S. Trunk Highway 71 in Stearns and Todd Counties; and • The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for a 2.7 mile section of State Route 210 in Armstrong County A perpetual pavement
is constructed so that distress occurs in the top layer only. The only rehabilitation required is the removal of the distressed surface layer and resurfacing with an asphalt overlay. Using current pavement technologies this can be done on an infrequent basis every 15 to 20 years. The reclaimed material is then recycled, making perpetual pavement the ultimate in sustainable design and construction. One of the keys to sustainability is long life, said Michael J. Kvach, executive director of the Asphalt Pavement Alliance. Asphalt roads can be engineered to last indefinitely with only routine maintenance and periodic surface renewal. The advantages of these perpetual pavements are
significant. Life cycle costs are lower because deep pavement repairs and reconstruction are avoided. User delays are reduced because minor surface rehabilitation requires shorter work windows and can avoid peak traffic hours. And the environment bene-
fits because minimal rehabilitation, combined with recycling any materials that are removed from the pavement surface, reduces the amount of material resources over the pavements life. Each of the winners will receive an engraved
crystal obelisk, and their names and the names of the projects will be added to a permanent plaque that is kept at NCAT. Eighty pavements have received the Perpetual Pavement Award since the awards program began in 2001.

Kolberg-Pioneer, Inc. (KPI-JCI) representative returns from trade mission with SD Governor YANKTON, SD — A Kolberg-Pioneer, Inc. (KPI-JCI) representative recently returned from a one week trade mission to China with South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard and other South Dakota manufacturers, designed to establish contacts and rapport with specific Chinese importers, as well as potentially land a multi-million dollar deal with a major Chinese contractor. Bruce Viau, international sales coordinator for heavy equipment manufacturer KolbergPioneer, Inc. (KPI-JCI) and president of the Great Plains International Trade Association (GPITA), was invited by the South Dakota Office of Economic Development. As part of the mission, Viau spent time in Beijing, Shanghai and Ulaanbaatar, the capitol of Mongolia. While Viau was invited both to represent one of South Dakota’s leading manufacturers and because of his role with GPITA, he also used the opportunity to help grow KPI-JCI’s sales in Asia and conduct dealer training with the company’s international dealerships. “There are 1.4 billion consumers in China alone,” Viau said. “All of those people want infrastructure. They want hospitals, schools, roads, telecommunications — everything we have. That’s a huge market for us, as we manufacture equipment that helps build infrastructure.” KPI-JCI was selected as one of two companies vying for a contract to build dozens of aggregate plants over the next five years in China, Viau said. The yet to be named Chinese company purchased a
4500 VSI crushing plant as a test machine, and will make a purchasing decision in the next few months. “This is a critical time for South Dakota to be active in exports because that is where our growth is going to come from at this point in time,” Viau said. “Only a small percentage of the world’s economy is in North America. If we are going to grow our economy and jobs in South Dakota, we have to be able to satisfy the rest of the world’s consumers.” Viau, who has traveled extensively around the world, said when he first traveled to China years ago, it was an extremely closed society not open to trade. “No one would speak to you and you were ushered around by government officials,” he recalled. “Today, it’s like any open society. I can walk on the streets in China by myself, whereas 10 years ago I couldn’t have done that. Trade is done now like it’s done in the rest of the world. China has come forward 200 years in the last 15 years.” While in the region, Viau also met with a newly authorized KPIJCI dealership, Beijing Huaqiangruiye Trade Co., conducted training with KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens authorized dealer United Machinery, Inc., and met with five customers in Mongolia. Viau said the vast market potential in China makes it important to continue a presence, noting that sales have grown every year in the past decade as construction booms in Chinese cities. There are more than 1.3 billion people in China, and it grows annually by nine million people.
“Since becoming a part of the Astec Aggregate & Mining Group, our sales have gone from nothing in China to one of the countries where we can depend on sales each year,” Viau said. “The market is growing and we must

The Pro-Deck approach implements an analysis and modification strategy in processing operations to maximize screen productivity and minimize wear by selecting the appropriate type of screen media according to the three phases of screening. This consultative approach results in a fully optimized screening process for greater efficiency and productivity, as well as less unscheduled maintenance and extended screen life. The Pro-Deck is not based on a canned formula but rather implements a customized approach for each plant’s specific needs. It combines W.S. Tyler’s years of screening expertise with an analytical approach to determine the best mix of screen media for each individual operation. Traditionally, processing operations tend to use the same screen media on each deck of the vibrating screen. But after extensive research and years of experience, W.S. Tyler concluded that a non-traditional approach of incorporating more than one screen media serves to prevent lost efficiency and unscheduled maintenance. Additionally, the ProDeck system helps to eliminate common screening problems such as blinding, pegging, premature wear and unscheduled downtime. Material traveling over a screen undergoes three different phases. W.S. Tyler calls these phases layered, basic and sharp screening phase. With each phase of the screening functioning differently, a customized screen media approach helps tailor the screen media to each phase accounting for the two most important factors in screen media — open area and wear life. In addition to considering the phases of screen-
ing, the Pro-Deck approach also evaluates material characteristics, the current functioning of the plant and final output qualities to ensure the best blending of screen media. Adjustments to the screen media are made one section at a time and results are closely monitored to ensure the highest quality output and maximum productivity. With analysis of material characteristics and adapting the screen media to accommodate wet, dry or even abrasive materials, the Pro-Deck approach becomes a scientific approach to screen media. The Pro-Deck approach can be applied to any vibrating screen unit in virtually any application. It does not matter whether the screen is under utilized, overloaded or screening just about right, the Pro-Deck system has benefits in every situation. Pro-Deck is so effective because W.S. Tyler offers such a large variety of screen media coupled with its experience in designing complete vibrating screens. The screen media in combination with its signature Vibration Analysis performance tool make Pro-Deck a comprehensive and complete approach. The W.S. Tyler screen media offering consists of a complete package and includes a variety of products from woven wire cloth and specialty Cobra Vibe to polyurethane panels and the exclusive Ty-Wire hybrid screen. W.S. Tyler is a wholly owned subsidiary of the German based Haver Screening Group, and a leading manufacturer, systems provider and specialist in the screening industry. Focused on all aspects of the screening circle, from particle analysis and screen media, to vibrating screens and processing technology, as well as screening services, it’s the company’s mission to bring new approaches and technologies to the market place. With deep roots
and years of experience in the wire weaving and screening businesses, W.S. Tyler is able to effectively meet the needs of customers around the world. For more information, contact W.S. Doosan DL420 wheel loader provides increased horsepower, fuel efficiency and reliability WEST FARGO, ND — Increased horsepower, fuel efficiency and reliability are just a few of the enhancements to accompany interim Tier 4 (iT4) compliance on the Doosan DL420 wheel loader. This 5.5cubic-yard wheel loader boasts a breakout force of 47,210-pounds, a full turn tipping capacity of 35,310-pounds and a rugged design built for a variety of material handling applications — such as quarries, mines, road work and site development.
sist in keeping the cooling system clean. The operator can select to reverse the fan via a switch, or it can be set to automatically reverse on a preset time frame. Each time the fan reverses, it will run in reverse for few minutes to clean the cooling system. This helps in dirty and dusty conditions to keep the machine running at optimal performance, using less power to cool the machine. This results in longer working hours and shorter maintenance time to clean the cooling system.
The DL420 is now available with optional electric steering to decrease operator fatigue during repetitive cycle operations on the jobsite. Performance The DL420 offers operators the ability to set upper and lower limits for both the lift arm and bucket stop positions from inside the cab. This improves cycle times in digging and loading applications, while providing improved control of the lift arm and bucket positions. The new automatic reversing cooling fan can be set to run in reverse to as-
For those requiring additional dumping capabilities, the DL420 is also available in a high lift configuration, extending the dump height 20-inches above the standard DL420, to 12-feet 1-inch. As an alternative to the standard limited slip differential, the DL420 offers an optional hydraulic locking front differential. Based on ground conditions, the operator can choose to lock the differ-

made the experience extremely informative and interesting to an unskilled observer like me. His patient explanation of how systems worked and what might be important to a contractor who is looking for the various advantages that the G946B has to offer, made the time spent at this exhibit, most rewarding. For example, Gary began by saying that the all wheel drive feature on this grader, gives the operator more grading power and control while performing on the job. He said that when the grader is equipped with the company's eight speed HTE840 transmission, the Volvo high torque All Wheel Drive System operates in forward gears 1-7 and reverse gears 1-4. And when equipped with Volvo's exclusive 11 speed HTE1160 transmission, it operates in forward gears 1-10 and reverse gears 1-6. Additionally, it provides an additional 8500-pounds of rim pull. When fine grading is called for, the AWD system also provides the ability to fine grade in Creep Mode using only hydrostatic front wheel drive, between 0-4 km/h (0 2.5 mph), when desired. Gary especially noted the location of the teeth on the outside of the circle of the blade, where this design feature gives the operator more torque when turning the blade while grading. He said that the dual gear Circle Drive System uses direct acting hydraulic power for increased turning and holding capability under full load. The Circle Drive System also uses two hardened drive pinions and is protected against impact damage by an overload relief valve as standard equipment. “Our transmission placement is unique to the industry,” he added. “We have engineered the engine transmission to be beneath the cab and ahead of the articulation hinge. This design puts the weight of the transmission within the grader's wheelbase. This provides more downward pressure on the blade for greater productivity. It also makes servicing the transmission easier. Other manufacturers have the transmission behind the engine, toward the tail end of the grader. Our exclusive location provides for greater cutting capability, increased steering control and better stability on side slopes.” As we moved to the rear of the grader, Gary highlighted the unique design of the grader's cooling system and the plenum chamber that houses the

various coolers. He said that the door mounted cooling fan is reversible so the system is capable of cleaning itself of dust and debris that might accumulate in the radiators mounted in the sides and door of the plenum. “We do not have a stacked cooler core system like other brands. This greatly reduces the likelihood of trashing and overheating,” he emphasized. “There is a hydraulically powered fan mounted on the exterior of the door that runs independently from the engine. That way, it saves on fuel and horsepower as well. It
features a temperature control monitoring system that monitors ambient air temperature as well as engine coolant and hydraulic system temperatures and operates when needed.” There are numerous additional standard features and optional accessories available on the Volvo 900 series motor graders that provide the kind of individual customization that contractors are looking for when it comes to purchasing a new grader. Doosan from 22 diesel engine that has been optimized for use with selective catalyst reduction (SCR) and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to comply with iT4 emission regulations. Engines with this configuration are optimized to reduce particulate matter (PM) by operating at higher combustion temperatures and to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOX) with exhaust after treatment using SCR technology. Additionally, engines using SCR systems offer increased fuel efficiency ¢w as much as 16 percent on this machine ¢w due to the engine optimization, which allows for a more complete fuel burn. The new auto idle feature provides additional noise reduction and fuel savings by reducing the working idle of the wheel loader from 950 rpm to a standby idle setting of 750 rpm when the machine in inactive for 10 minutes. The 775-cubic-inch engine features a high pressure common rail (HPCR) design with direct fuel injection, electronic control and four valves per cylinder. The high pressure common rail fuel system increases the efficiency of fuel delivery by increasing the pressure up to 34,000 psi. The increased pressure allows the injector to inject a finer mist into the engine, which results in a more efficient combustion that in turn produces more torque and improved fuel economy, less noise, lower operating costs and cleaner exhaust.
Reliability Service intervals on the front lift arm pins have increased 500 percent from 50 to 250 hours, reducing operating costs and downtime. Tilt cylinder hydraulic hoses have been rerouted for improved hose reliability, better hose movement and improved visibility to the attachment. More new options for Doosan wheel loaders include a diesel-powered coolant heater to improve starting in cold weather or a block heater that warms the engine coolant before engine startup with an electrical heater. Comfort The DL420 is now available with optional electric steering to decrease operator fatigue during repetitive cycle operations on the jobsite. A joystick has been added to the left armrest that allows the operator to control the directional movement without having to use the steering wheel. A new door threshold design makes getting in and out of Doosan wheel loaders — and cleaning the inside of the cab — much easier. Interior cabin improvements also include a number of multi-function display panel upgrades on a centralized monitor that allows the operator to view comprehensive machine system information. The centralized monitor displays critical machine information — such as engine rpm, engine coolant temperature, fuel level, DEF level, machine warnings, and the transmission
selected gear. A key exterior cabin improvement is the lower front side glass has been widened, providing improved visibility of operations. The DL420 — like every new Doosan machine — is covered by an innovative 48 hour parts guarantee. The program guarantees that if a “machine debilitating” part is needed, Doosan will deliver it directly to the end user within two business days or Doosan will pay for a replacement machine rental. The 48 Hour Parts Guarantee is subject to carrier delivery restrictions and/or governmental agency delays.

Officials for the city and consultants conduct a walking tour of the project every week. The simplest approach to moving the muck was with stacking conveyors transferring it up to a muck bin or to waiting dump trucks. However, the conveyor process resulted in the muck splashing too much for crews to clean up. “The drop from the end of the conveyor into the dump was about 6 or 7-feet. The muck was splattering everywhere, 30 or 40-feet. It was going right up our sound wall! We had a ‘splooge patrol’ of five guys with loaders going full time to clean up.” The muck wouldn’t splatter so much if it was drier, of course, but it then becomes too sticky to offload easily from the buckets and dumps. Foaming agents are actually added by the Tunnel Boring Machine to condition the muck so that it flows freely from the excavation chamber. Precise handling is the solution “What we needed was a method to place, not drop, the material precisely into the dump trucks. We looked at some other machines, but we needed more horsepower and more mass to get the stability for a precise transfer. We went with the SENNEBOGEN 870 M on the recommendation of Modern Machinery. But really, we had no idea if it was going to work.” The SENNEBOGEN 870 M is a purpose built material handler weighing 165,000pounds and powered by a 426 hp engine. The wheeled unit is mounted on a specially reinforced platform raising it 30-feet above the floor of the excavation where the muck flows in. Modern Machinery fitted the machine with a SENNEBOGEN extra long boom to make the 63-foot reach up to the waiting trucks. Its

SEATTLE, WA — Mudslinging isn’t the type of activity that normally wins accolades, but Michael Diponio has nothing but praise for the way his SENNEBOGEN 870 M material handler has been heaving the muck around at his current jobsite for Sound Transit in Seattle. Sound Transit is extending the U-Link subway from its LRT station at Pine Street to a new station planned at Capitol Hill. Diponio, the Vice President of Michigan based Jay Dee Contractors, is project manager for the Jay Dee/Coluccio/Michels joint venture which will mine the two tunnels, each 21-feet in diameter and 3,800-feet long. Tunneling like this is Jay Dee’s stock in trade and the family owned business has been doing it for more than 45 years. With the U-Link project, however, Diponio faced unique challenges posed by the environmental standards of Washington State and the City of Seattle. The problem, in a word, is muck. Conveyors from the project’s two tunnel boring machines deliver their tailings in the form of a heavy slurry to the open cut for the future subway station. The slurry arrives about 80feet below grade and Diponio has to move the wet muck up to road level and haul it out to his fill site without compromising the city’s strict standards for protecting its water table and roadways. Cleanup can be costly “We’re working in a very urban area here, and our haul route travels directly through a residential area,” Diponio explains. “The track out is severely limited, and using thousands of gallons of wash water every day is counter productive.” The contract includes significant cash incentives for complying with these requirements, and a local environmental technician is stationed on the site to monitor the operation.

Once the bucket is raised above the surface and the machine swings over the edge of the shaft, the machine operator loses sight of the bucket. Jay Dee’s operators scoop up the muck and guide it up to the road level using two cameras to find their way. One camera is mounted at the boom knuckle and another is positioned roadside by the trucks’ station. With a total boom length of 63-feet, they have just 3-inches of clearance to reach their targets, the dump bodies and pup trailers. The bucket is carefully lowered directly into the bed, with only inches of clearance on either side of the bucket, before the bucket is opened to let the muck flow out. The fleet of dump trains grew as operators became increasingly proficient with the 870 M and the drivers were able to navigate into the exact position with the help of markings painted on the pavement. Picking up the pace Loading each truck requires four passes to fill the front unit and five to fill the trailer. The system was able to get the job done but the question on Diponio’s mind was, how much time would it take? “This method has performed well beyond our expectations,” he’s pleased to say. “We now have eleven trucks moving through the cycle, and the SENNEBOGEN more than keeps up with them.” Diponio reports that the initial loading times exceeded his target, but the operators advanced up the learning curve very quickly. “Before we started, we spent a day or so with the operators, going over the drawings to make sure everyone understood the concept. The first tests came in at 20 minutes for a full load, and we were looking for 12 minutes,” he recalls. “The average now is under 10 minutes, which means we can now meet our production projections!” The best loading time achieved by any operator so far is just six minutes. The contractors are looking forward to earning their bonus for environmental compliance, too. Even at its fastest loading times, the 870 M is moving with precision, enough that the worksite stays meticulously clean. “The inspectors can tour the site in their street shoes without a problem,” claims Diponio. Jay Dee’s “splooge patrol” has been replaced by a crew of two who police the site once a day with a wheelbarrow. A wheel washer system and street sweeper take care of any spillage coming from the trucks’ tailgates. According to Diponio, the controlled success of the “mudslinging” operation can be credited to the right choice of machine and to SENNEBOGEN’s smooth hydraulics system. “The 870 M is a larger machine than we first considered, but Will Wintermute at Modern Machinery recommended a heavier machine for added stability.” The 870’s hydraulic boom, he says, gives his operators more control over the bucket than a cable crane or excavator would allow. The speed and precision of the SENNEBOGEN 870 M add a valuable new tool to Jay Dee’s tunneling capabilities. Its clean operation significantly reduces the cost of site maintenance while protecting the quality of ground water. Its fast loading cycles ensure that their haul trucks can keep pace with the tunnel boring machine, which is on track to arrive at Pine Street by the end of this year.
